Achint Kaur, unlike the other TV wicked mum-in-laws and vamps sends a shiver down viewer's spines as the cruel Nikhila in Karam Apna Apna. She isn't scary to look at, but the way she plots to kill her daughter-in-law despite projecting a goody-two shoes image all through is a commendable act. The actress talks to Abdul Lateef Chougule about her character, her live in relationship and how she feels playing mother to an actor who is nearly the same age as her. Q Why is your character in Karam Apna Apna turning from positive to negative? Will it acquire more negative shades as the story progresses? There is nothing positive or negative about Nikhila. She is a normal person. I think it all depends on individual perception. Since the past five years there have been only two kinds of characters on television, positive and negative. There are no middle characters. Given such a scenario people perceive a character either in positive or negative shade. Even if a character is a bit grey, she is labelled negative. Q But is Nikhila positive or negative? A. She is like any normal real life person with a mix of both positive and negative shades. One day she may be positive and the next day she may appear negative because of certain actions. She is what she is because she believes in something. She is concerned about her son's life. Since her guru had told her that the woman Shiv marries will die she made him marry Gauri and is now waiting for her to die. So there is a reason behind everything she is doing. Q Grey or negative, it seems for sure that you have a penchant for negative characters. You made quite an impact as Pallavi in Kahani... Pallavi is an extreme character. She is extreme in love and hatred. If she supports somebody she will do it very honestly and if she hates someone she will go to any length to take revenge. It's a very unreal character that lacks any kind of sensitivity. But then that's the way television stories and characters are written these days. Q How are viewers able to relate to such unreal positive and negative characters? It's a commercial world out there. Television is like cinema, larger than life and entertaining. When people don't get to see anything else then they start relating to what they see day after day. Q Is Pallavi going to come back in Kahani…? As of now nothing is certain. But then she is a central character and a major cause of most of the problems in the Aggarwal family. She can't be done away with. I am sure she will come back. A major negative force can't be put on the backburner for too long. Q How do you play a negative character so effortlessly and convincingly? I try to be as natural as possible. I think it's my conviction for work that makes me do every role as convincingly as possible. You just have to follow the script without going overboard. Q Do you give more preference to negative characters? In the present scenario yes. Positive characters are repetitive, whereas there is a lot one can do with a negative character. Negative characters have the opportunity to do different things whereas positive characters have lot of limitations. Negative characters are responsible for causing friction and taking the story forward. Positive characters merely react. Q Do you get offers to play positive roles? There are two shows on the anvil where I am playing positive roles. Also I am playing my age and not a mother of grown up kids. Q How comfortable do you feel playing a mother to say Iqbal Khan or someone else? I can't deny that I am not totally comfortable. The discomfort level is there. But then there are no good roles for women in my age bracket. I have no choice but to play the mother. Q How do you keep yourself absolutely trim and fit? I don't diet. But I work out for one and half hours, three days a week. Q You have a live-in relationship with Mohan Kapoor. Any plans for marriage? How does you son relate to him? There are no plans for marriage. My relationship is going perfectly well. As for my son he shares a very normal and friendly relationship with Mohan. http://www.deccan.com/Sunday%20Chronicle/Sunday%20ChronicleD escription.asp#Negative%20characters%20carry%20a%20soap%20fo rward |
