Injury slows down Salil
After Hours Correspondent
Wednesday, December 13, 2006 23:59 IST

'Karam..'..track changed to accommodate the actor who is recovering from a neck injury

Salil Ankola's troubles don't seem to be ending. First, he was unceremoniously ousted from Sony's reality show 'Bigg Boss', for having violated a year long contract with Balaji Telefilms.

Now, when he's resumed shooting for Balaji's 'Karam Apna Apna' (Star Plus), where he plays the protagonist's father, he's been laid low by an injury. The muscle rupture that he suffered while playing cricket informally over a week ago, has put him out of action.

Ankola had to miss shooting for two days. But since he's part of a daily soap, he has resumed shooting, even though he was not able to walk for a week, and doctors say that he will take five more weeks to recover."I guess I am just out of practice," says the former test cricketer, who took to acting after his sporting career ended. "I was bowling and must have stretched wrongly, as I ended up bursting some veins in my neck. It was so bad that I could not move at all for some days. My neck had turned black and blue," he reminisces.

Yet, two days after the accident, the actor reported on the sets disregarding the doctor's orders to rest for a week. "I shot in whatever way I could. But the producers were good enough to change the script a bit and also let me off early after the shoots," he says.
The changing 'Karam Apna Apna' track needs Ankola centrestage now that he and his reel wife, played by Achint Kaur, reveals their true colours in the plot. The major burden of the changing track is now being consequently borne by Kaur, say sources in the production house.

"It's the first time I am doing a daily soap, and I don't think it's my cup of tea," says a bemused Ankola. Still, the actor isn't averse to the idea of taking on similar assignments in the future. "But that's only after my contract with Balaji Telefilms expires in August 2007," he reminds, a covert reference to the soup he landed himself in the last time he transcended the limits of the contract.

There is bad news for Star Plus sci-fi series Antariksh. The channel has decided to axe the show in order to make way for Karam Apna Apna in the 8 pm slot. Sources close to the channel have confirmed this new development. Karam… is being shifted from its 9:30 pm time spot to accommodate KBC which starts in January.

Antariksh though isn't the only show shutting shop. Viraasat too is being asked to wind up. Although rumour has it that the show will return in a couple of months time for a second season. Unlike Viraasat, Antariksh is shutting shop for good as the show has not been able to get high TRPs and is being regarded as a flop serial. The serial was supposed to be inspired by Star Wars and was launched with great fan fare three months back.

It is alleged the show's leading man Ganesh Venkatraman was very upset with this news. But when contacted he said he wasn't sure that the serial was ending. " I have heard about the show going off air, but we don't have any official confirmation as yet. I guess because of KBC there is a lot of reshuffling going on. But I can't comment about my show ending till I get confirmation from the channel," says Ganesh. Can't blame the actor for not confirming the news because people have been speculating about Kahin to hoga ending in January. Some believe that Karam… will replace it.

Rajev Paul to spoof Munnabhai

TV actor ends stint on soap Karam Apnaa Apnaa and moves to spoof on Nach Baliye 2

GITA HARI
Times News Network

It has been a month since TV actor Rajev Paul has gone off the serial Karam Apna Apna on Star Plus. He told BT, "Ekta Kapoor is special to me and though I left the serial a month ago because my track in it was not moving anywhere, I left on a very amicable note."
Meanwhile Rajev is doing a spoof in the finals of Nach Baliye 2. "Yes, I always wanted to be in the finals of the show during my time," he adds good humouredly, "but as I was not good at dancing, people said Delnaazz (his wife) was 'Nach baliye' and I was 'Bol Baliye' – meaning, Delnaazz danced and I was good at talking!" But he thanks this gift of the gab for letting him cohost ten segments of Nach Baliye 2.
"I am hosting a segment where Shabbir and I play Circuit and Munnabhai respectively," he explains, adding "we are spoofing the song Samjho ho hi gaya from the film Lage Raho Munnabhai and we'll take goodhumoured digs at contestants and judges too!" He concludes, "I have a dream to chase — host my own show. Nach Baliye 2 is net practice. I am working on a concept and am in the process of hosting one."

Rajev-Delnaazz quit 'Karam Apna Apna'
After Hours Correspondent
Sunday, December 17, 2006 13:24 IST

The characters played by the actors were completely sidelined in the show
Rajev and Delnaazz Paul, who were gung-ho about their new Balaji project 'Karam Apna Apna' (Star Plus), have backed out from the show as they claim their characters didn't shape up as expected.
Says Delnaazz, "All I can say is that it always happens in this industry!" While Delnaazz puts it forthright, Rajev doesn't seem too preturbed with their decision. He says, "We quit the soap as there was no development in our track. Looking at the story's progress, we didn't expect some drastic change in the storyline which could shift the focus. So we spoke to our creative head and, Ektaa (Kapoor), that since there isn't much to do, we would not like to be a part of the show anymore.
Rajev further says,"Ektaa was very understanding and there's no animosity between us, I am looking forward to working with Balaji again."
Apparently, the duo was asked to make a special appearance in 'Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka' (Star One), but they turned it down. "We were asked to come on the show, but if I wasn't shooting for 'Nach Baliye 2', we would have definitely grabbed the offer!" quips the actor.

Achint Kaur, unlike the other TV wicked mum-in-laws and vamps sends a shiver down viewer's spines as the cruel Nikhila in Karam Apna Apna. She isn't scary to look at, but the way she plots to kill her daughter-in-law despite projecting a goody-two shoes image all through is a commendable act. The actress talks to Abdul Lateef Chougule about her character, her live in relationship and how she feels playing mother to an actor who is nearly the same age as her.

Q Why is your character in Karam Apna Apna turning from positive to negative? Will it acquire more negative shades as the story progresses?
There is nothing positive or negative about Nikhila. She is a normal person. I think it all depends on individual perception. Since the past five years there have been only two kinds of characters on television, positive and negative. There are no middle characters. Given such a scenario people perceive a character either in positive or negative shade. Even if a character is a bit grey, she is labelled negative.

Q But is Nikhila positive or negative?
A. She is like any normal real life person with a mix of both positive and negative shades. One day she may be positive and the next day she may appear negative because of certain actions. She is what she is because she believes in something. She is concerned about her son's life. Since her guru had told her that the woman Shiv marries will die she made him marry Gauri and is now waiting for her to die. So there is a reason behind everything she is doing.

Q Grey or negative, it seems for sure that you have a penchant for negative characters. You made quite an impact as Pallavi in Kahani...
Pallavi is an extreme character. She is extreme in love and hatred. If she supports somebody she will do it very honestly and if she hates someone she will go to any length to take revenge. It's a very unreal character that lacks any kind of sensitivity. But then that's the way television stories and characters are written these days.

Q How are viewers able to relate to such unreal positive and negative characters?
It's a commercial world out there. Television is like cinema, larger than life and entertaining. When people don't get to see anything else then they start relating to what they see day after day.

Q Is Pallavi going to come back in Kahani…?
As of now nothing is certain. But then she is a central character and a major cause of most of the problems in the Aggarwal family. She can't be done away with. I am sure she will come back. A major negative force can't be put on the backburner for too long.

Q How do you play a negative character so effortlessly and convincingly?
I try to be as natural as possible. I think it's my conviction for work that makes me do every role as convincingly as possible. You just have to follow the script without going overboard.

Q Do you give more preference to negative characters?
In the present scenario yes. Positive characters are repetitive, whereas there is a lot one can do with a negative character. Negative characters have the opportunity to do different things whereas positive characters have lot of limitations. Negative characters are responsible for causing friction and taking the story forward. Positive characters merely react.

Q Do you get offers to play positive roles?
There are two shows on the anvil where I am playing positive roles. Also I am playing my age and not a mother of grown up kids.

Q How comfortable do you feel playing a mother to say Iqbal Khan or someone else?
I can't deny that I am not totally comfortable. The discomfort level is there. But then there are no good roles for women in my age bracket. I have no choice but to play the mother.

Q How do you keep yourself absolutely trim and fit?
I don't diet. But I work out for one and half hours, three days a week.

Q You have a live-in relationship with Mohan Kapoor. Any plans for marriage? How does you son relate to him?
There are no plans for marriage. My relationship is going perfectly well. As for my son he shares a very normal and friendly relationship with Mohan.

Disappearing act!

Sumeet Sachdev
Actor Sumeet Sachdev is all at sea about where his character Shashank in Karam Apna Apna is headed. The character, which had emerged into one of the lead characters of the plot, has long gone missing from the horizon. When asked about his sudden disappearance from the screen, Sumeet said, "My character Shashank was supposed to be a cameo, but it evolved into something else. I have to discover what's happening with it and only then can I say anything concrete." Has he brought up the issue with Ekta Kapoor? " I will reserve my comments on this," Sumeet said.

Biggest no shows of 2006
By: the Hitlist team
December 27, 2006

Different. Ground-breaking. Unusual. These were just some of the many adjectives that were used to describe these shows. But in the end, they all towed the 'been there-done that' line and ended up as the biggest turkeys of the year.

Fame X

Saw it on: SAB
Time-table: Mon-Thurs
9 pm, Friday 10 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Just like Indian Idol 2 couldn't recreate the magic of its first season, Fame X too failed in its new avatar. Trying too hard to be hip, the show fell flat in entertaining the audience in any way. The set is tacky, the judges (Daler Mehendi, Ganesh Hegde) are icy cold and the contestants too have nothing to cheer about.

How long before it shuts: With zero interest from viewers, it shouldn't be long before this Fame wraps up its game!

Left Right Left

Saw it on: SAB
Time-table: Mon-Thurs,
9.30 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Rajeev Khandelwal stepped out his comfy Sujal shoes and turned to a fresh concept to boost his sagging career. Set against the backdrop of a military school with six new faces, LRL was a welcome change for those bravely suffering saas bahu shows.

Making a debut with some stellar ratings, the show soon became tangled in the confusion of taking a risk as a youth show or playing it safe with the usual drama.

How long before it shuts: In spite of trying new formulas and twisting the plot, LRL hasn't been able to win over the audience it wooed in the beginning.

Twinkle Beauty Parlour

Saw it on: SAB
Time-table: Off air

Kyun nahin chala: Coming from the same production house that brought us Remix, this show was definitely well publicised, to say the least! The channel went on a full throttle promotion and marketing strategy with giant billboards plastered all over the city showing mustachioed women waiting for Twinkle's parlour to open.

After it started, the audience realised there was nothing funny about this series. Neither seriously dramatic nor witty, the channel gave up on this baby even before the audience could make their decision.
How long before it shuts: The show went off air within six months.

Karam Apna Apna

Saw it on: Star Plus
Time-table: Mon-Thurs, 9.30 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Touted as Balaji's next big show after Kavyanjali, this drama set against the backdrop of Kolkata, looks like it is suffering from a Parineeta hangover. Starting off on a fresh note, the show didn't take too long to walk the hackneyed road of every other K-soap. There seems to be an ongoing fight between the background music and characters to decide who is the loudest!

How long before it shuts: With Iqbal Khan already out of the show, it won't be long before the audience gives its final verdict on the karam of this show.

Akela

Saw it on: Sony
Time-table: Saturday, 10 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Promising to be thriller of sorts, Akela (like its name suggests) became a lone ranger in the slot it was put in. Neither was it engrossing nor did Sudhansu Pandey lend any charm to the project.

How long before it shuts: The buzz is that Sony plans to pull the plug off this turkey soon.

Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan

Saw it on: Star Plus
Time-table: Sunday 10 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Smriti Iraani breaking out of her Tulsi image to attempt something new was the biggest reason to tune in to this show. Starting off on a fresh note with an interesting ensemble cast, the soap soon lost its charm somewhere down the line. The weekend time slot also hampered it from reaching a wider audience.

How long before it shuts: We don't think this show will be around this time next year.

Yash replaces Iqbal in Karam

Not winning the Nach Baliye 2 trophy might have been bit disappointing for Yash Tonk. But within a week of the dance show's finals Yash has bagged a major role in a major serial. He has replaced Iqbal Khan as Shiv in Ekta Kapoor's prime time daily Karam Apna Apna. "It's a wonderful role. Shiv's character has many shades and I am really happy to play the role," smiles Yash who has played lead roles in quite a few Balaji soaps but has never done a role where he had to replace any other actor.

"It's a challenging job to replace someone in a well-established serial because it brings lot of responsibility on your shoulders. When a producer calls you to replace a popular character it becomes all the more challenging because you have to meet the expectations of the producer as well as viewers." Not having seen the serial, he didn't know much about the show and the character but after two meetings with Ekta Yash says he has understood the gist of the show and the character. He will start shooting for Karam Apna Apna this week.

Karam Apna Apna's Shockers

Karam Apna Apna, the daily soap on Star Plus is quickly gaining grounds among the television audience. Ekta Kapoor's latest serial revolving around a rich family's issues with Kolkata as the backdrop and the benevolent Goddess dictating the lives of the people vibes well with the changing scenario where the modern day Indian is one who at heart cherishes the age-old rituals and customs of the nation. Karam Apna Apna has a string of surprises for the spectators every week whether it is sudden marriage plans for Gauri, Shashank absconding the marriage, Gauri and Shiv's unexpected marriage or even the darker secrets, the hidden intentions behind the marriage. Of late the serial has come up with new twists and turns keeping the audience glued to the sets. With Ekta's conventional generation leaps not in the offing at the moment the daily soap has much more to offer.

A chain of shocking events topple Gauri's life only to realize that her husband Shiv and mother-in-law Nikhila have been the master minds behind her series of events which changed her life and led to her marriage to Shiv. Even as the secrets are revealed half the truth still remains completely shrouded in mystery. There's a major twist when Gauri's dramatic comeback has more in store. She is the ideal 'pativrata' who loves her husband so much to the extent of forsaking her life for him. Shiv and Gauri make the ideal couple but one can always sense some mystery lurking in the background.

Karva Chauth a much sought after ritual symbolizes a wife's unfailing devotion and love to her husband. Gauri observes the fast for Shiv's long life, as a major shift brings to light his deep love for Ipshita, his childhood friend. What remains to be seen is whether her love wins over all odds, or his treachery and deep-rooted love for Ipshita succeeds. Gauri endures every ordeal patiently, the Indian woman who is as tolerant as the Dhartimata.

The suspense element is the USP of the show, as new problems crop up and Gauri and Shiv are caught in them. Iqbal Khan's macho image and Pallavi Subhash's subtle next-door girl attitude is very appealing and endearing. Their onscreen chemistry is amazing perfectly imaging a love-hate relationship forced upon the couple by the strange circumstances. Fate decides their destiny, so also for the audience who eagerly await every other episodefrom the Balaji camp!

Shreya Bisht couldn't have expected a better birthday gift. Soon after a magazine that featured her on the cover hit the stands Shreya landed with a plum TV role. Her role as Ipsita in Karam Apna Apna has given her instant fame and recognition.

Q Tell us a little about your character in Karam Apna Apna?
I play Ipshita who's a classy, sensual girl. A girl who can do anything for the person she loves and for truth and justice. Hence there are times when you find some grey shades in her.

Q Till now you didn't have much of a role. Will your track gain prominence soon?
Ofcourse. My role is a central character.

Q Will you now become the vamp who'll do anything to get Shiv?
It's not a negative character — just has grey shades. She does so only because of her fight for truth and wants to win her love at any cost. Mine is an important character, parallel to Shiv (Iqbal Khan who has been replaced by Yash Tonk).

Q How was your first day on the sets of Karam? How were your co-stars Iqbal, Pallavi etc?
It was October 10th, my birthday, when I came for my first day shoot. From what I observed, I felt very uneasy and uncomfortable. Suddenly, I decided to go back as I felt acting is not my cup of tea. I was about to leave when the assistant directors and production managers came to me and convinced me to give it a try and made me feel comfortable. Even my co-stars Iqbal and Pallavi were very polite and professional. Today everything is just fine.

Q What made you consider acting?
I was never interested in acting as I was successfully running my own consultancy firm. A Mumbai magazine was looking for fresh faces and one of my close friends happened to be associated with it. He suggested that I should send my pictures. When my picture was published, I got a call from Shobha Kapoor. I was called for an audition and I took up the opportunity because a good brand name like Balaji was associated with it.

Q Now that you've become a star, how do your family and friends react?
My family is in Nainital. That's my home town. They were suprised and happy when they first saw me on TV. My friends and employees in my company were also very excited. Once, when I was in a movie theatre and came out during the interval to buy eatables, a Gujarati couple recognised me and asked if my character is really bad... will I separate Shiv-Gauri... I had to convince them that Ipshita is not bad girl.

Q You must be shooting almost everyday for this show? How do you manage your business?
I've called my sister from Delhi to look after my HR consultancy firm and she has taken charge successfully. Sometimes, if important decisions have to be taken, she discusses them with me on the phone. Regarding TV, I'm a workaholic and am used to this kind of a schedule in my business too.

Q Your future plans!
Now that I have taken acting seriously I am just going to concentrate on this and will give it my best. You know what, in the beginning my scenes were done only after 5-8 retakes but now it gets done in 1-2 retakes. (Sampurn)
