Archana Bhatt, who plays Pragati in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki talks to Alok Hisaria about how she landed the role, her Remix connection and how Hrithik Roshan and Rajeev Khandelwal are her favourite actors.

Q How did you land the role of Pragati?
After people at Balaji saw one of my Remix episodes, I got a call from them for an audition. Thankfully it went off well and I got the chance to work in one of the best shows on Indian television.

Q You are the third Remix star to join Kahaani… how does it feel?
It's good to see my old gang back with me. We indulge in a lot of masti whenever there is a break. I don't feel like a new comer here and the new unit members are also very nice and co-operative.

Q You are shown as a plump girl in the show. Are we going to soon see a makeover?
(laughs) This is how I look in real life too so I don't think there is going to be any makeover.

Q Who will be your love interest in the show?
I have no idea about that, I have just started working.

Q Who are your favourite movie and television actors?
Hrithik Roshan and Rajeev Khandelwal are my favourites.

Q What are your other projects?
At the moment I am only with Balaji. I just want to concentrate on my role as Pragati.

Q Going by how scripts change, will your character feature on the show for along time to come?
I don't know anything about the length of my role but I think it is going to be good as Balaji has asked me for bulk dates.

Q How did you get into acting?
I have been into drama and acting from college. I was a member of our college cultural team and also used to participate in inter-college drama competitions and festivals. After graduation I joined professional Gujrati theatre and did a lot of plays. One day I heard about people auditioning for Remix. I too went along, gave it my best shot and got selected.

Q How was your first day in Balaji, were you nervous?
This was not the first time I am facing the camera. I have done shows like Remix, Kaajal and Twinkle Beauty Parlour. Instead, I was excited on my first day at Balaji.

Aroona Irani readies Doli Sajaa Ke for Sahara One

Jan 2007 will see veteran actress Aroona Irani's AK Films put forth a new
serial on Sahara One for her loyal viewers. The new show is titled Doli Sajaa Ke and is directed by Pawan Sahu. The story deals with father-daughter relationship in the backdrop of a modern yet to some extent superstitious society, which regards the female protagonist as unlucky.

Aroona irani ready with Doli Sajaa ke

The father-daughter relationship is highlighted as the story revolves around
the death of wife and the birth of daughter. Anuj Saxena who plays Barkha Bisht's dad was never averse to the idea of playing father to a contemporary heroine, as the versatile actor puts it, "I have played father to Aashka and Rucha in Kkusum. I have no qualms in playing Barkha's father, after all it
is only acting. I might be father in this serial and a young hero in another."

The other starcast comprises of the main lead being played by Manoj Bidvvai along with Amit Sarin. Manoj who is all geared up to tie the knot with Raavee Gupta this
weekend in Goa, has worked with Aroona earlier in Zameen se Aasman Tak on
Sahara One and Tum Bin Jaaon Kahan on Zee TV. He is quite elated as he says,
"Yes, it is a pleasure to work with Aroonaji." Elaborating on his character,
he reveals, "It is the story of two families. I play Ved, a mamma's boy who
is engaged to Barkha, but when my mother discovers that she brings bad luck,
my engagement to her is broken and I marry someone else."n the relevance of the title, Manoj explains, "the heroine is supposed to be unlucky because on her birth, her mother dies and then many incidents follow to reinstate her bad luck. The title is relevant kyonki uski doli sajti hai, magar shaadi nahin hoti."

On the relevance of the title, Manoj explains, "the heroine is supposed to be unlucky because on her birth, her mother dies and then many incidents follow to reinstate her bad luck. The title is relevant kyonki uski doli sajti hai, magar shaadi nahin hoti."
The recently married actor Amit Sarin provides the third angle to the love triangle. Yet another gripping soap from Aroona Irani's production after Desh Mein Nikhala Hoga Chand, Mehendi Tere Naam Ki, Rabba Ishq Na Hove and Vaidehi, we are sure this one too will have the home viewers glued to the tv sets on prime time!

Their real and reel personas are different. One would never find the bahus and bhabhis of serials dressed like their characters or even mouthing the dialogues that they do. But except for the appearance, Saakshi Tanwar feels she is quite like Parvati of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. Says Saakshi, "I'm very religious and I make it a point to say my prayers no matter what. My family is everything to me and I can do anything for them; I also respect my elders a lot." Ekta Kapoor says Parvati is very vulnerable. So is Saakshi a vulnerable person too? After thinking for a minute she says, "Yes, I am vulnerable but I can be really strong if I have to. I will never let anyone walk all over me."

Xmas Xtasy!

Santa Claus is on its way! The air is thickening with the festivities of Christmas and celebrations are on in full swing.

Here's how a few of our television stars perceive and savour Xmas as Prashant Golecha discovers.

Chetan Hansraj

First thought: Santa Claus and gifts

Celebrations: This is the best time of the year. My wife Lavinia is a Christian and we have recently shifted to a new house so it is as good as decorated, we normally do up our place during this festival. We already have a Christmas tree at home. I very occasionally visit the church too. When I was a kid I used to wait for Christmas.

Sharad Malhotra

First Thought: Red wine, cheese and Santa Claus

Celebrations: It's the time to party! The entire month of December is amazing especially from 25th to 31st which is the best week of every year. Back in Kolkatta we used to get a Christmas tree, decorate the house and attend Club parties. The nostalgic feeling is amazing! I do love to visit the church. Last year I attended the mid-night mass at Mount Mary Bandra and this year too if I pack up timely I will go there. I don't shop for Christmas but I do wear new clothes.

Poonam Gulati

First Thought:
Guava Cheese and Marzipan

Celebrations: As I have studied in a convent school, Christmas is a very special festival. In my early childhood I used to play baby Jesus and Bible was the first book that was gifted to me. I still go to Church near my home in Mahim. When something good happens in my life I go to Canossa convent church, which falls in my school campus. I do have an original Christmas tree in my house. Santa makes me nostalgic. Ideally at this time I would love to be in Finland and have a white snowy Christmas.

Dimple Inamdar

First Thought: Tons of happiness and fun

Celebrations:
I always look forward to this festival. I have been to churches in Goa and in Mumbai I do visit a church in Mahim sometimes on Wednesday. During Xmas, I don't indulge in special shopping. Ideally I would love to go to Canada to celebrate a white Christmas, there's no spirit as such in our city.

Narayani Shastri

First Thought:
Another festival like Diwali or Holi

Celebrations: Most of the time we either go out and party or stay at home. When I used to live in Colaba, we had people belonging to all religions residing in my building. So we used to celebrate Xmas and even visit the church. But now I have shifted base to Andheri and I don't even know my neighbours. I feel all festivals are a reason to celebrate in a cosmopolitan city like Mumbai.

Rajesh Kumar

First Thought:
A day for gaiety

Celebrations: I can't celebrate Christmas as TV actors don't get a holiday. In school days, it was one day of freedom and fun. Now it is like just any other day for me. I don't go to church, maybe during my school days I must have visited.

Juhi Parmar

First Thought: Lots of gifts

Celebrations: It's just a festival like other festivals - a happy occasion. And the best part is that the entire world celebrates it! I love to go to a church if I get the time and opportunity.

Poonam Joshi

First Thought:
Eating cakes and expecting gifts

Celebrations: Christmas is not typically my festival and I don't celebrate it much. But the very joyous and festive atmosphere kicks off the party mood. I always make it a point to go for a midnight mass every year, but this time because of my tight shoot schedules I may not go.

Go, Goa!

Even though the new actors of Kahaanii Ghar Ghar Ki have not been granted an official leave, they hope to celebrate New Year's Eve in Goa

Back to Section Stories

Ranjib Mazumder

Generation next: Sakshi Tanwar with new actors from Kahaanii...

Most actors are wondering how to celebrate New Year's Eve. But the new generation of actors of Kahaanii Ghar Ghar Kii has already made their plans for the big night. After Kahaanii… took a generation leap, they are ready to celebrate in a big way as they all have bonded well with each other. The actors are gung-ho about going to Goa even though they have not been granted an official leave as yet.

Says Jatin aka Adi, "We have informed the production house way back about our plans of celebrating New Year's Eve in Goa. But they have not granted us the leave and choose to keep quiet when we informed them about our plans. As all the senior actors have made plans for the New Year, we might not be shooting on those two days. For the moment, we are yet to get the shooting schedule and are keeping our fingers crossed. Our priority is the shoot and the holiday plans can take a back seat."

So, how far has the trip been planned? Jatin says, "After joining Kahaanii..., I have realised that life has taken a different turn as I have found the best buddies over here. We are shooting day and night because we need to get an episode bank. Besides, being exhausted because of the gruelling schedules, we want to spend whatever free time we get in a quiet place. So, we decided to spend two days in Goa. But we will be celebrating differently and we certainly won't be partying!"

Did the youngsters approach any of the senior actors like Sakshi Tanwar or Ali Asgar for the bash? "Not really. Everyone has different plans. So, it's good to plan with the youngsters and people of the same age group," adds Jatin.

Ali Merchant aka Bharat who's behind all the plans says that they all are looking forward to celebrating New Year's Eve in a quiet and peaceful manner. "From working together to chilling out together, the bonding has been great after joining Kahaani….. We want to spend the time in Goa, far away from the crowd of Mumbai," Ali says.

Commenting on being invited by Ekta for her private bash, Ali says, "For the moment, we have no clue about her private bash. We have just made our plans, if she approaches, things can change any time."

Archana aka Pragati says excitedly, "We are going to spend all our time in Goa just chilling out at the beach. Mumbai gets so crowded, that you can't have your personal space. We are going to rock there for sure."

Kya setting hai, boss!

Cupid's arrow seems to have struck Ali Merchant and Archana of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii.

Ranjib Mazumder

Archana

There's a new story brewing on the sets of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii these days. Apparently, Ali Merchant aka Bharat and Archana aka Pragati are seeing each other. Said a source in the production house, "Both Ali and Archana have known each other for a long time. Although, the new-generation actors bond remarkably well, Ali and Archana are the centre of attention for various reasons. They are virtually inseparable on the sets; they rehearse together, eat together and so on. They even stay back after their respective shooting is over so that they can leave together at night."

Another actor, on condition of anonymity, said, "We all hang out together; but they really have a special thing going between them. On December 13, Archana took on the entire responsibility of arranging a birthday party for Ali. Even at house parties, they prefer to dance together. Recently, Ali was seen giving dancing lessons to Archana. Although they have not declared that they are a couple, something is definitely cooking between the two."

Ali Merchant

However Ali, when contacted denied being romantically involved with Archana. He said, "We have known each other for a long time and are just very good friends. We always hang out together with our group. As far as the dancing lessons are concerned, I have taught her a few steps in the house parties we often have. And we always rehearse together, as there is always a challenge to give our best performance working with the experienced actors like Ali Asgar or Sakshi Tanwar. Besides she is a very talented actress and extremely helpful."

But, what about the special birthday bash? "I didn't know Archana was behind it. All I can say is that I'm thankful to whoever had planned it, as it was a wonderful bash."

When contacted, Archana said, "We have known each other for a long time and we are the best of buddies. The best thing about Ali is that he does not have an attitude problem and yes, he is very sweet."

Flashback 2006

Murgh Mussalam Makeover:
Sakshi Tanwar

Here's the ultimate case of 'khoda pahaad aur nikli chuhiya'. Balaji Telefilms went berserk announcing Parvati bhabhi's mega makeover. The countdown began with loads of suspense, especially since it was seedhi saadi Parvati who was undergoing a metamorphosis courtesy Manish Malhotra's Midas touch.

Will the new Parvati don Western outfits? Will straight cut blouses give way to sexy cholis? Will chiffons be replaced by Kanjeevarams and Banarasi silks? Innumerable questions plagued our minds, but they quickly fizzled away when we laid eyes on Parvati in her 'nayi pehchaan'. The bun-tied hair was straightened and let loose and she was finally given a dash of lip gloss. Arre baba, ho gaya makeover! What did you expect her to look like? J Lo?

Director Dopyaaza:
J P Dutta

A flattering letter we received from The World Association of Insomniacs is proof of the medical research and value of J P Dutta's extraordinary venture, Umrao Jaan. The thanda script, pheeka romance, thakela acting and sleep-inducing music is the perfect blend to put the restless insomniacs to sleep.

Mind you, putting together this deadly combination is no easy task. Hence, we want to honour Dutta for the compassion he has shown towards this highly neglected section of society.

Kaatil Quote Korma:
Kasmera Shah

The tangy starlet sent shivers in Bigg Boss's house with her oomph factor and her 'mind in overdrive' plotting. Known for being the meethi churi, Kashmera bombarded newspapers with spicy quotes once she was evicted from the house.

Mark her words: "I didn't want to cook/serve people like Rahul Roy and Amit Sadh. I'll cook biryani for Salman Khan instead." Kashmera, take home our special Quatil Quote Korma and while we enjoy your biryani!

Chamatkari Chowmein:
Eijaz Khan

When a fan claimed to have become pregnant by telly pin-up boy Eijaz Khan, we expected the actor to be baffled, flustered or at least agitated by such 'dubious' reports. Instead, Eijaz couldn't help wondering if the woman had been impregnated by looking at his photograph. This is certainly a path-breaking phenomenon! Three cheers to this new age scientist who, with his lethal combination of 'intelligence' and machismo, will steer the world to a whole new direction.

We present him with the Chamatkari Chowmein award replete with medicinal herbs, shrubs and grubs from across the globe that will further aggravate his miraculous powers. All you women hoping for a mini Eijaz can now actually get this deadly combo of 'brain' and brawn!

Chatur Chutney:
Shah Rukh Khan

He isn't called Badshah for nothing; Shah Rukh Khan knows when and how to play his cards. So it won't be wrong to say that King Khan is working overtime to make his way up to Shehenshah Amitabh Bachchan's throne. There's no denying the unspoken rivalry between the stalwarts, and Shah Rukh is busy capturing every fort that has established Big B's regime.

Not too long ago, SRK tried to transform into the Don but the attempt didn't pay off well. Then the actor sent shockwaves through the entertainment circuit when he snatched AB's flagship project Kaun Banega Crorepati right from under his nose. A smart move, indeed! Shah Rukh Khan is now the proud winner of the much-coveted Chatur Chutney award for his much-appreciated cleverness.

Kapda Kofta:
Manisha Koirala

The Nepali beauty had no competition in this category. It's her ever-changing mood that dictates her bizarre sense of fashion. If she wants, she can turn up looking like the prettiest lady in tinseltown, but more often than not she's a recipe for complete disaster.

Her 'I-care-a-damn' attitude towards critics makes her the perfect applicant for this honour! Be it her balloon pants, layers of fabric or even her Spiderman inspired shoes, Manya has mastered the art of tacky dressing. Way to go, lady!

Thakela thandai:
Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan

This couple deserves to be applauded for maintaining the same momentum on screen and off it. Their reel life and real life chemistry is so cold that it would even put Antarctica to shame! Ash plays her 'no comment' tape recorder on repeat mode, while AB's baby feels it's derogatory to discuss the woman in his life in public.

Thanda romance, super thanda statements. That's why the couple deserves a Thakela Thandai! Piyo and learn to jeeyo, bhai!

Pallavi to come back in KGGK

Pallavi from Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki (Achint Kaur) is re-entering Kahaani Ghar Ghar ki after a long gap. The serial has taken a 20-year-leap. But Achint's character has been missing so far.

Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii's creative head Neetu Kumar said "Yes she is coming back in the show as her role is very important. We spoke to her about it, but I can't comment more on that."

However when contacted Achint said: "It is not decided. Kahaani... people haven't spoken to me. If they'll ask me I will first read my track and only then will I decide about the offer. It is also depends upon the story."

But haven't they spoken to her already? Achint said, "No they haven't spoken to me, but I know that Pallavi's character is important and after the leap it needs to be back in the show. But as of now nothing is decided, I'll now speak to them."

It seems that either there is lot of confusion between the actress and production people or they have just figured out a nice way of evoking audience curiosity. Or maybe doing all those multi-charactered, multi-generation serials is finally having an effect on the artistes and the serial makers!

About Achint Kaur:

Achint has also essayed the role of Mandira in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. So far, all her recent roles have been negative as well as important. Apart from this she did serials like Saaya, Banegi Apni Baat, and Tere Mere Sapne. Achint has also done films like Julie, Corporate, Sur, Om Jai Jagdish etc.

There will be lots of non-veg in the house, friends will be coming at my place so on that day I won't be shooting. Even the next few days there will huge amounts of non-veg in the house. I won't be celebrating New Year's Eve."

Razak Khan (character actor Hello Brother) "I will be shooting in Hyderabad on Bakri Eid. Work is worship. But I do want to take the opportunity to say "Eid Mubarak" to everybody."

Raza Murad "I will be celebrating with my family. We prepare Biryani on Bakri Eid. The whole 'mahoaul' is celebratory. We invite all our friends. This is for the first time that two celebrations are coming together on the same day...Eid and New Year's Eve, so I just want to convey my message to all my country men--Eid Mubarak, and Happy New Year.

Ali Asgar (Kamal - Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii) "I will do my morning namaz and after that I would be celebrating Eid with my family and friends. Of course the highlight of the day would be the food. Eid's special dish - Biryani."

Prolonged wait for Aroona Irani's doli

Not being deterred with the debacle of Sony's Vaidehi, Aroona Irani was already ready to join the TRP race again with her new show Doli Saja Ke for Sahara One. But there is some disappointment on that front too.

This family saga was initially scheduled to go on air on 15th January which shifted to 22nd and last heard it's being postponed to February…..phew! Fingers are being pointed at the production house which seems to be facing some teething issues.

This shillyshally is also testing the patience of Barkha Bisht (she plays the protagonist in Doli)…..who is heavily banking on this show as post Pyar Ke Do Naam…this is her only prime time daily (ya she does anchor Popkorn Newz on Zoom, but that's passable!).

We all know the 'V' element didn't work for Aroona Irani so will her old 'D' fixation (Desh Mein Nikla Hoga Chand) bring good news for this producer-cum-actor? But for our answers we'll first have to wait for the day when her new show finally takes off.
