Hey Ram!
The chanting of shlokas and assorted religious ditties seems to be reaching a peak on our soaps.
In the space of a half hour this week, I was subjected to a menagerie of religious invocations, mostly the 'Jai Ram, Sita Ram' variety, across three of the better watched channels. On Sahara One's Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki, the travails of Parias she battles her marital woes were supplemented with some heavy duty chanting in the background.

Across at Zee, a recap of the weekly Ravan, not surprisingly, had similar chanting going on, just as Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, running at the same time, had one of the innumerable Sanskrit shlokas they keep ready for emotionally charged scenes. Does this reflect some kind of social trend? Or is TV setting one? Do viewers belonging to all communities lovingly lap up these background scores (otherwise unconnected to the plot), or does the targeted viewership of these shows exclude other communities?

If some soaps rely on religious undertones, the others make do with Hindi film songs. For several episodes, Sony's Aisa Des Hai Mera used tracks from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna to bring about the romance between the lead Rusty and Gaurav Chopra. Two weeks ago, Rakshanda Khan wooed her tele-hubby with a full rendition of the yesteryear song 'Bahon Mein Chale Aao' in Sahara's Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye, and Sinddoor's hero last week sat through a Bollywood item number enacted by a bar dancer, before he turned knight in shining armour and saved her from some goons.
This week, Sony's Kaajjal relied on the 1942-A Love Story track, Pyar Hua Chupke Se, to spark off the romance between the lead pair. Is television relying heavily on Bollywood songs, because original tracks, tried on some Sahara soaps, did not work? Or are Bollywood songs a sureshot way of getting viewer attention?

Achint on a high! | ||
Achint Kaur's schedule is getting hectic by the day. Currently seen in Karam Apnaa Apnaa, not only is she making a comeback in Kyunki as Mandira, she has also commenced shooting for her new show Virrudh (produced by Smriti Irani and Applause Entertainment). Regarding the yet-to-be-telecast show on Sony, Viruddh, she says with much relish, "I play Vedika, an alcoholic with a troubled past. But this time around it's not a negative character like Mandira in Kyunki, though you can't call her normal at the same time. The roughness of life has rubbed on her." Talking about her first day of shoot the actor adds, "It was my first day yesterday and I drove everybody mad on the sets when I put on my character Vedika. But it was great fun!" Speaking about her comeback in Kyunki (Mandira her character in Kyunki is back from the gallows), Achint comments, "I can't say whether my character would remain the same or undergo a positive change. I have not got any creative brief on that. My shoot for Kyunki might happen in a week's time." Achint who has earlier been part of shows like Kahaani and Kitty Party has quite a mixed bag of meaty roles in her kitty this time. Her penchant for intense histrionics has earned her a lot of accolades and we hope to catch her with the same spirit this time around too. |

From Mehendi Tere Naam Ki to Vaidehi, Aruna Irani has come a long way. Vaidehi might have ended pre-maturely and her next serial Doli Saja Ke on Sahara, which was supposed to go on air in 2006, might be still waiting to see the light of the day, but the feisty lady is far from disheartened. Excerpts from an interview: Q When is your new serial Doli Saja Ke going on air? Wasn't it slated for a December premier? Q What is Doli Saja Ke all about? Q Have you chosen the name of this serial from your earlier film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna? Q What was your experience doing a bold subject like Vaidehi? Q Were you unhappy with Sony's response? Q Your favourite Sangeeta Ghosh was not there in Vaidehi and also in Doli...? What happened between the two of you? You are definitely going to see her in one of my upcoming serials. Q Your serial Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand was a big hit, but none of your other serials have repeated that success? Just like Sholay and Mother India cannot be made every time; the same applies to my shows too. But from my side I put 100 per cent effort in all my shows to recreate that kind of a magic. Q How do you manage acting in Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii and production? There is nothing to manage as I have to give only seven days in month to that show. You are also going to see me in Doli Saja Ke... but only after three-four months. It will be a different kind of an entry. Q Considering that your husband Kuku Kohli is a director and you are a producer, are there any plans for films? Definitely. If the chance comes, yes. At present I want to be only with my TV audiences. I can't predict the future but this doesn't mean that I am not open to doing films. Who knows, I may start doing theatre suddenly. |
Aruna Irani's a real perfectionist !! | ||
Aruna Irani has been a name synonymous with successful television shows like Mehendi Tere Naam Ki, Tum Bin Jaon Kahan, Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand and Rabba Ishq Na Hove to name a few. Carrying further the marathon of her successful innings on television would be her new primetime show on SaharaOne, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna. The show would hit the airwaves by the end of the next month. Its star cast includes names like Anuj Saxena, Amit Sarin, Jaya Mathur, Surabhi Tiwari and Barkha Bisht. Adds Barkha Bisht who plays the female lead Anupama in the show, "Aruna Ji is a perfectionist in the real sense of the word. She cannot settle for less if she is not getting the best out of you. Shooting with her is a lifetime experience and as an actor I have learnt a lot during the shoot of the show." The show is the story of a girl who has to go through the tribulations of losing her mother, living with a step-mom and finally coming to terms with the complexity of her circumstances. Barkha Bisht who is also hosting an entertainment show further adds, "It has been one of my most touching moments shooting for the new show. The sensibilities involved into my portrayal have made me aware of the finer human feelings. I am sure the audience is going to have a great time watching the show." Amit Sareen, who plays the lead opposite Barkha says, "I play Chatainya in the show and it is one of my finest performances. That's all I can say about it at the moment." Taking a cue from Zee's success with soaps, SaharaOne is also sprucing up its primetime in a bid to woo more audience attention. With Aruna Irani's new show being part of the same strategy, we hope it turns out to be a great success story. |
