It had been two months to date since the encounter with the crouching tigress. There was not a single day that Jalal missed his morning routine - prayers, sword practice, exercise etc. And there was not a single day that he missed recollecting those delectable face & swift movements of that warrior.
Dreaming of the celestial nymph became a permanence, it was inseparable from his sleepless nights. Every time he recited that name "Jodha' there was a strange feeling, an obscure connection. It ended with his heart being restless.
"Never mind, I need to control these desires and thoughts" spoke Jalal inwardly to himself. "I just need to channel my energy to the great cause - to be the King of Hindustan". His morning routine of exercise, sword practice was becoming fierce and rigorous. The soldiers who were his opponents often were wounded and exhausted. A new opponent was needed every day, as Jalal was becoming ruthless.
Abdul, Jalal's childhood friend and his trusted advisor noticed a strange rage and restlessness in him. He decided to confront him but was just waiting for the right situation.
Khan Baba noticed the intense will of Jalal and his rigorous practice. He was way too pleased to have a student like Jalal and hoped that one day he will achieve his goal. One evening, he addressed Jalal and said "I think the time has come for you to visit the Ustad of Ustad in warfare training. My good friend Acharya Rudra. He lives in the woods of the Aravalli mountains. I shall write a letter to him requesting him to train you in the exquisite art of guerilla warfare including sword fight". Jalal was super exited hearing this. "That will be great Khan Baba", he said and asked "when should I leave". Khan Baba said "My dear boy, we will have to inform him first or else you will be killed. Its not easy to enter into their web. I would say in a month's time you will meet him". Jalal nodded in agreement and thanked his guardian.
In the meantime, Abdul enquired about Jalal's weird behavior with some of his bodyguards. They did not help him in any way. So he decided to confront Jalal. "So who are you targeting to attack next Jalal. You seem to be training rigorously. Is it a nearby kingdom or some damsel in distress"? Jalal smirked at his friend and chuckled a little. "Abdul, my friend; why do you think I'm preparing for war? I am just merely practicing and fine tuning my skill.". But Jalal, my friend there is a storm brewing in your eyes. What is it?", asked Abdul. "you still have not lost the art of asking those nosy questions. Do you?" said Jalal. "Jalal, you forgot that I'm the son of a Hakim/Doctor and its in me to question everything unusual or out of the ordinary. So spill the beans what is happening? Moreover, I'm supposed to be one of your advisors on all matters including personal Aren't I?" asked Abdul.
"Abdul, Abdul, what can I say?" blushed Jalal. "OMG! Mughal king blushing is it a new damsel? A new kingdom on plan to annex? No wonder the sun is rising in the west these days and poor soldiers are hurt severely even when there is no war", said Abdul. "Man, nothing at all. Its just a dream of a celestial nymph haunting my dreams. And...", hesitated Jalal. "And what Jalal?" asked Abdul.
"You know two months ago; I had come back with some injuries after my visit to the Ajmer Sharif. I was attacked by forest bandits. But a certain tigress came to my rescue and saved me. She also nursed my wounds. I just seem to not forget those beautiful eyes. I don't know who she was. But I do know her name as "Jodha". I definitely think she is Rajput from the way she spoke and the language.
"Jodha", that name sounds familiar" said Abdul. "Isn't it the name of one of the Rajput kingdoms? Hang on it's the name of a Rajput territory, part of Marwar". What is it? Aargh, it's on the tip of my tongue" said Abdul. "Yes, that's it. Its Jodhpur state".
Jalal was intrigued by the information given by Abdul. He mentally thought he was going to delve into it when he goes on his voyage to Acharya Rudra and maybe ask him. But still he wanted to solve the mystery of Jodha. Though a wide smile did not spread across his face, he did smirk & he seemed to be a little happier than before. Abdul was shocked & happy at the same time seeing his mate's face. Further Jalal also informed his most personal advisor that will be soon going to the Aravalli mountains & its woods to meet this special teacher and learn the techniques of guerilla warfare. Abdul immediately was pleased and offered to accompany him. Jalal said that he will think about it and also consult with Khan Baba.
Rukaiya Begum saw the changes taking place in Jalal's behavior. He was distancing himself from her and from other women. She decided to spend some time with him through a game of chess and then seduce him.
Jalal was delighted to play a game of chess with his first wife. She was feisty in her moves and in her conversations too. "Jalal I miss being with you", she said and then went to get a vintage wine. She brought two flutes filled with the potent liquid and offered Jalal. He said" Thanks dear. But I am under a strict diet. So I have to refuse this time". "what is it Jalal? Is there something wrong? Something I did, is it?" she asked. "Why does it have to always be you Rukaiya! Reverted Jalal. "I have told you before. Lets just say that I'm preparing my mind & body for some rigorous training, hence can't indulge in wine, as it hinders my body movements" snapped Jalal and left her chamber a little irritated.
Seeing him irritated and walking down towards the garden, Abdul called out to his friend. "Looks like we are going to have a drought in the next few days". Why do you say so Abdul? It just rained yesterday in Agra" replied Jalal. "Well, who said that kind of drought! I meant drought of smiles & smirks. Have you seen your face in the mirror?" asked Abdul.
"If you don't have anything useful to talk about, don't show me your face" snapped Jalal and kept walking. Abdul thought it was wiser not to confront Jalal in his current temperament. I shall speak to him tomorrow he thought and left to his chamber.
Next day, Jalal was still in his grumpy avatar and dealt with the dealings in his court. Abdul made sure he did not come in front of him, given the previous day's encounter. But late in the day, he went to Jalal's chamber to chat with him. Good evening Shehanshah! he said. "What now Abdul?" asked Jalal. "I came to tell you that I have found some information on "Jodha". If you don't want to talk to me now, I can come back tomorrow", said Abdul with half a wink. Immediately, Jalal's eyes shone. "What do you know Abdul, tell me quickly" said Jalal, with a sly grin. "I heard that "Jodha" is a Rajput Princess, said he. "Arrggh! Abdul, I already know that; is there anything else you wish to share?" Asked Jalal, eager to hear more relevant details. "I heard there is going to be Navrathri & Diwali Mela/festival in Rajputana in a month's time" replied Abdul and paused. "And this is the most important information you have on Jodha!" asked Jalal irritated. Eagerness was killing and restlessness was creating an agonizing pain in Jalal's heart. "What's the material point Abdul. Can't you be quick and straight with the information" snapped Jalal.
Abdul tapped his feet with a cheeky toothy grin. "Patience my friend, patience" dragged Abdul. Jalal wanted to strangle his friend's neck for taking a year's time to spill the beans. "Well, it seems that Rajput Princes & Princesses congregate for these festivals in Marwar and Mewar. There is a very high chance that Jodha will be there", said Abdul finally.
Jalal felt thrilled to hear what he heard. The thrill was compounded by the fact that he was travelling to the Rajputana province in a month's time for his training. He somehow wanted to fit this festival in his schedule before he gets engrossed in his training.
"Abdul how sure is your source of information? Is she really going to visit Mewar for the Diwali festival" asked Jalal.
"Hmm. So you doubt my source? Haa! Ok, if I have to prove, alright. I would say my information is true. It's true as long as the sun rises, as sure as the full moon and new moon..." continued Abdul with boring annotations. "Abdul, if you don't stop being stupid, I will slay your head" snapped Jalal irritated. Abdul knew his friend's restlessness, but was enjoying the moment, as he knew it was the only chance to tease him as long as he could. "What will you give me my friend in return, if she comes? Pledge me half the kingdom will you?" teased Abdul.
"Well, I shall gift you a province or two if I have the opportunity to see her. But if she does not come, I shall take away your every freedom and luxury you have my friend", said Jalal with a stern face but chuckled within.
"Done deal Shahenshah!" said Abdul with his signature toothy grin. Inwardly, he shivered thinking of the unfavorable outcome of the deal. He was unsure if Jodha would actually attend the festival. From the sources he obtained information, it was certain that many Rajput Princes & Princesses did attend these events. But nobody had confirmed that Jodha would attend. In fact, nobody knew exactly, which kingdom Jodha belonged to. Abdul was just taking his punt at destiny. He raised his arms in the air with open palms offering prayers to Allah to fulfill Jalal's wish. If not, he was sure his life will be in hell.
In a week's time Jalal was going to travel towards Marwar and the Aravalli woods for his training. In the last month and two, his physique had trimmed down. He looked lean & mean with sculpted muscles over his arms, torso and legs. "Jalal, I would advise you to disguise yourself before you leave on your journey. But make sure your disguise seems real. If not, you will be in real trouble" advised Khan Baba. Jalal agreed to shave off his head and his moustache, discard every single piece of Mughal jewelry and adorn a neutral set of commoner's clothes.
So with the blessings of his mother and other near & dear ones, Jalal set out on his journey along with Abdul and a couple of personal bodyguards. All of them were disguised as commoners. Even Abdul and the soldiers had shaved their beards and moustaches and all had adorned neutral clothes and set out on their journey.
The Aravalli woods were awaiting to welcome one of the country's brave warriors to embrace his feistiness and valor.
On the other side, in Amer, Jodha was still in her dazed state. Having returned from AmbeMa temple, she contemplated on life. She kept thinking of fate and that one can't change its path. Still not showing any interest in matrimonial discussions that was being heard in the palace, she just concentrated on her daily activities from sword practice, archery, feeding birds and helping her mother in whatever was needed. The rest of the time, she painted or wrote poetry to distract her disturbed mind.
Jodha's grandma had been watching the subtle changes in Jodha these past few weeks. She wondered what had happened to her wild grandchild who had been chirpy, energetic and full of mischief. She could not see her favorite grandchild curl like a worm afraid of something. She decided to find out. After dinner one night, she asked Jodha to massage her feet to soothe her joint pain. Jodha was glad to spend time with her dadisa and very religiously massaged her feet with some oil. "Jodha, is something wrong my dear" enquired her dadisa. "You seem to have taken ill my little one. You can tell me Jodha", she nudged. Jodha was surprised at her grandma's concern and thought if her face and gestures showed her inner feelings. "Nothing dadisa, just tired. Its that time of the month na", she lied. "Na, lotus, there is something bothering you. Your eyes don't lie dear", said Dadisa. To which, Jodha replied" Haa, I was contemplating on fate and marriage. I just don't seem to be interested in it right now. What can I do Dadisa? Mum and dad have been asking me if I had fancied any of the Princes who had come earlier to the congregation", she said.
Dadisa just smiled and said, "Jodha, sometimes we don't choose our destiny, it chooses us. As long as our aim/determination is pure & firm, we will realize what fate has for us. So don't worry. Whatever happens, happens for a reason. And it happens in its own time. So don't worry my child" saying she embraced Jodha and then asked her to go to bed.
Jodha contemplated on her grandma's words that night. She had strange occurrences in her dream. An inner voice said, fate can't be changed, but destiny is what you want it to become. So face it without fear. Embrace what comes your way, for it will shape your destiny and will reflect in your heart. She got up startled from her sleep and thought deeply on the words said. She did not know what to make sense of the weird dream and the weird messages. But she decided to enjoy her life and live it with positive energy.
Next day, she got up with rejuvenated spirits. After her daily routine activities, she went to see her father who was getting ready for the court. "Bapusa, Bapusa, would you be wild at me if I tell you to send me away for a few months. I wish to spend time with my cousins in Mewar and Marwar", she said. Raja Bharmal raised his eye brows and wondered. "Let me discuss with Mynawathi first dear and will let you know", he said.
That afternoon, Raja Bharmal had a chat with his queen. "So what do you think Mynawathi ? While we wait for Prince Suryaban's response to our alliance proposal, should we allow her to visit Marwar and Mewar?'. "Absolutely dear. Looks like she is back in her spirits. I think we should let her explore and maybe she will happily accept our decision for her", said Mynawathi. "Excellent" said Bharmal and sent word to the Kings of Marwar and Mewar that they will have visitors from Amer.
So it was decided that Jodha with her two sisters and her youngest brother would tour around Marwar and Mewar in time for Navrathri and Diwali. The girls were so excited that they engaged in packing for the next few days. Jodha was delighted that she will get to go out of the palace and explore. She loved Navrathri and Diwali melas. She thought she will live her childhood back again like old times before she gets sent away as a married woman.
The happy party departed towards Marwar, where they were to spend the days until the end of Navrathri festival and then proceed to the neighboring province of Mewar for the Diwali Mela.
In a week's time, Jodha along with her companions reached the palace of the King of Marwar. Rani Roopmathi greeted Jodha and was delighted to have her. "Oh my! My little Princess has blossomed into such a pretty rose. You were so small when you were born here in Marwar. The years have gone so quickly. Look at you" she said. Jodha was a little shy but she was happy to greet and meet the lady who had helped her mother in delivering her. Rani Roopmathi was Rani Mynawathi's cousin from her father's side. This was almost her second home. "Ranisa, we are very grateful for having us" said Jodha and hugged the queen. They also met the King and paid respect and passed on the messages sent by their parents.
All the girls settled down and were made to feel at home. They looked forward to chat and play with their cousins during the festival of Navrathri which was to begin in a few days. The whole kingdom was being decorated for the festival.
Navrathri - the worship of the Divine Mother was celebrated on a grand scale in Marwar with much fanfare and glory. Religious verses of Durga Sptasati were recited to invoke the divine mother requesting her to bestow her blessings on the Rajputs. Offerings to the sacred fire, animal sacrifice, feeding of the poor & needy, singing, dancing and fireworks were all part of the grand scheme of festivities.
Jodha along with her sisters joined their cousins and very religiously took part in the prayers daily. They decorated the prayer hall daily with different floral patterns. In the evenings, they heard the recital of stories of the Divine Mother from religious texts and also watched skits by artists depicting the stories of the Divine Mother. It was enlightening for Jodha, as she realized that one has to believe in oneself to discover one's potential and destiny.
Navrathri also attracted traders from all other provinces. There were the famous cattle markets. Jodha and her sisters sneaked during the day to these markets. They saw camels, horses, cows and sheep being traded. They also saw elephants, snakes and mongooses being sold. It was an experience not to be missed.
Jodha also sneaked to watch a few sword fights where strong men took part in duels. She was always fascinated and drawn to the shiny swords like bees' swarm around the bee hive.
In Marwar, the sword fight was special. These duels were fought riding a fine horse. The horse was well trained to face duels and it tests the rider's skill to control the beast on one hand and the sword on the other. Jodha was star stuck. She was intrigued and wished she could take part. But she knew there was no way that she could do such a catastrophe mistake. So she just enjoyed watching them.
The finale of Navrathri Pooja was approaching and the famous Ashwa. Everybody was excited to see the finale, the procession of fine horses and the finale fire crackers. The unconditional loyalty, the unwritten commitment, the timeless bond between man and animal i.e. the horse was celebrated and honored. Marwar was famous for the breeding, training of fine horses. So on the final day of Navrathri, the fine horses were cleaned, bathed and bedecked with accessories and decorations including fine silk & fresh flowers. Rajputs paid their tribute and thanksgiving to their loyal companions in war and peace every year by this day of worship of the horses on the final day of Navrathri. Jodha, her sisters and the royal family of Marwar took part in the rituals and marveled at the royal tradition and offered their final prayers to AmbeMa and worshipped for the continued success of Rajputana.
"Oh! My, these nine days went like a day" exclaimed Princess Maya, Jodha's cousin. Jodha, your presence here has made this festival special. I will really miss you guys when you leave. I wish you can stay here forever", she said.
"Maya, I have to thank Rajasa and Ranisa for their generosity for having us", said Jodha... "I just relived my childhood memories here. I thank you for tolerating all our demands and allowing us to be with you". The girls hugged each other and chatted through late in the night.
Another week passed. Jodha & party were getting ready to bid adieu and move on to their next destination. Rani Padmini was reluctant to let go of Jodha. She spoke to the King and said "Rajasa, maybe we should send notice to Raja Bharmal of our interest in Jodha for our Prince Padam Singh". "Wonderful words spoken Rani", said the King and immediately ordered his chief minister to write a special note to Raja Bharmal and the letter was sent swiftly with the stamp of royal emblem.
The party from Amer took leave of Marwar and proceeded towards the Mewar. Sukanya was excited to see her charming prince Suryaban. She dreamed of him every night. Jodha's thoughts were preoccupied with the strange messages about fate and destiny. She so wished she could go visit her guru and Acharya, who always soothed her turbulent mind. She also wanted to offload her frustrations in a fierce duel of sword fight. But without her favorite brother Sujamal, there was no way she could runaway to the Acharya's hideout.
As they reached Mewar, Jodha & party were warmly welcomed by the queen of Mewar and Prince Suryaban. The king was away on royal duties. Prince Suryaban was happy to see and greet Jodha, as his parents had accepted the proposal and a reply was also sent. But Jodha and her siblings were not aware of it.
Jodha and her sisters paid respects to Ranisa and expressed their gratitude for hosting them. "We have heard so much of the festivities for Diwali, we are looking forward to the melas and the grand fireworks Ranisa", said Jodha. "I also wanted to go and see the mountains from the tower", said Sukanya. "Will you show us around Rajkumar Suryaban" asked the youngest Princess. "All in good time", replied Suryaban with a sly glance at Jodha, who was oblivious to the attention being given.
Diwali was approaching soon and Mewar was preparing for the festivities. "Yet another festival to take part and enjoy", chirped Sukanya who was so happy to be there and was overly enthusiastic. She took special interest to dress herself well. But she felt she was not getting the attention needed. On the other hand, Jodha was her normal self but still a little dazed in her thoughts. She was clueless of the alliance being proposed. God knows what would happen if she knew.
The whole kingdom was in preparation of special diyas or lamps, lampshades, chandeliers of diyas and various other structures which would be lit up to brighten the dark nights. It was going to be a whole week of celebration. Special traders market was also being set up. This was almost the world famous barter market where things were exchanged for things. There were going to be horses, camels, elephants, cows, buffaloes,
The Ameri princesses were excited about the markets. "Jiji, I want to buy lots and lots of fine silk", said Sukanya. "And I want lots and lots of bangles, necklaces and anklets" shouted Shivani. "What are you going to buy Jodha" asked both the sisters in unison. "what else a charming prince is what she is going to look out for" shouted Moti. Jodha just gave a stern stare to Moti. "hmm..., I too will buy bangles, anklets and the waist band. Let's see if we can get some unusual ones", replied Jodha. Her Mewar cousins said "what out for some Persian and far eastern jewelry. They are unusual to our style but quite elegant". The girls were intrigued. "Maybe we will get to see some Mughal jewels and see how bad they are to ours" giggled Shivani. But none of the others patronized the idea, especially Jodha. All the princesses spent the next few hours applying henna on each other's hands and feet with intricate patterns. "Jodha, one could say you are being decked like a bride. So beautiful and alluring" said the Mewar Queen. She was very happy that once their acceptance message reaches Amer, a formal announcement would be made soon. Jodha blushed and gave her a sweet smile
The week long festivities commenced with the worship of AmbeMa. The queen and prince of Mewar offered special prayers to the Divine Mother. The swords and other weapons of warfare were worshipped assisted by the priests. Then the queen and the prince along with their ministers went out in a procession to meet and greet common people to spread the goodwill of the festivities. It was a gesture of benevolence and gratitude to the common people that the King of Mewar went out personally to meet the public. In his absence his queen and son continued the tradition to spread light and enlightenment to replace negativity and destruction.
The palace and every house was lit with numerous small clay diyas, oil chandeliers in varying layers, various forms of pedestal lamps and lanterns were lit to ward away darkness in mind, thoughts and physicality and welcome light to illuminate with hope and positivity. Jodha was amazed with the thousands of diyas lit. The whole place looked like a paradise. "Jiji, stop staring and come one. Rajkumarji is taking us to the tower where we can see the whole city" said Shivani. They trekked through the corridors and ascended the stairs until they reached the very top of the tower. And the view from the tower was breathtaking. "Amazing, splendid! "said Jodha. Rajkumar Suryaban was mesmerized by the sharp features and sheer beauty of Jodha. "the sight is indeed splendid", he replied, stealing glances of her. Jodha just kept looking over the city and over the horizon. She had no clue of Rajkumar Suryaban's inclination. All the other princesses were over the moon as they were bowled over this tradition of lighting rows and rows of lamps to signify the victory of good over evil. No matter what the temperament of a soul was. In a matter of seconds, the sight of lit lamps and diyas brought delight to the eyes, joy to the souls. "let's go to the markets" shouted Shivani and Sukanya.
"Sure we can but you will need to disguise yourself if you don't want to really enjoy the markets without the troops following us", said Suryaban's sister Mayuri. "Absolutely", said Jodha. "Let's change and get going then", said Shivani and they all went towards their rooms to change and slip away from the palace after their dinner.
Meanwhile, Jalal, Abdul and some of his soldiers had reached Mewar and were staying in the quarters of the market traders. Abdul had managed to utilize his connections and obtained a camp that belonged to a jeweler. They too pretended that they were traders of precious metals and had come to Mewar for the famous markets. Jalal was awestruck with the preparations of Diwali in Mewar. Every street was grandly decorated. People were in the preparation for the grand last 4 days of the festival. Sweets and savories of every kind were being made, skits of various stories of Lord Krishna and the conquest of Lord Rama were being practiced. It was a joyous environment. Anybody and everybody were in merriment and one could feel the contagious joy. Jalal was glad he was here finally. "Abdul, do you think we can get near to the palace", he asked. "My, my somebody is very eager for a certain nobody. I wonder if everybody will come to know that nobody is here", replied Abdul. Jalal scratched his head with the cryptic comment and smirked. "well, just remember the deal" said Jalal and went about wandering the market to gauge what is being sold and the type of crowd. He did not spot any royalty nor the alluring face or eyes he was searching for. Having travelled for many days and the aimless wandering in the markets fatigued him. He hit his bed and went into a deep slumber, oblivious to the happenings around him. Except he was not alone. At least in his thoughts. The celestial nymph visited him without fail and allured him to paradise.
Next day early morning, Jalal got up as usual offered his daily prayers and started his exercise routine. He made sure he does not draw much attention; hence he did not practice with his sword. Instead he did a lot of conditioning exercise. "Who in the world am I? Found it, got it, did it" exclaimed Abdul with his emphatic banter and came to greet Jalal. "ok, I want the city of Agra. Dedicate it to me. And I want you to be my servant. Ok, go and bring me some delicious breakfast" ordered Abdul.
Jalal who had just finished about 100 pushups was a little breathless and wiping his sweat beads on his forehead he asked "Is everything ok? did the snake bite you? oh! Sorry. Did you bite the snake! Yes, that makes sense. Poor snake died of poison" uttered Jalal and giggled. Abdul was annoyed now. He smirked like Jalal, turned his face and said "Looks like somebody got off from the wrong side of the bed. Well, that explains the sore throat. And sorry I can't offer the nectar I found Jalal. It's supposed to be of the rarest, sweetest variety. Never mind I might offer it somebody else. Or I might consume it", saying he was about to leave.
"what is it Abdul? Stop blabbering and come to the point" shot Jalal irritatingly at Abdul. "Well, if you keep up your deal promise, I shall delve the details", he replied. "Agreed, go on" said Jalal. "Well, at the world famous Mewar markets..." began Abdul. "Well, yes that's old news. What is this nectar and found it you were talking about?" snapped Jalal. "Hmm... Somebody is losing patience for nobody. And nobody is visiting the markets and might even visit everybody. Uff Dumbo. I found your celestial nymph my friend", uttered Abdul. Jalal was stunned and shocked. His world just froze for a moment. "And what?" asked Jalal. "And the news is she might be visiting the markets with her family". "And who is she? Asked Jalal.
"Now I need the city of Kabul, agreed" chuckling Abdul continued. "She is the princess of Amer and supposed to be very beautiful and stubborn". Abdul further explained that Jodha usually visits markets with her sisters and other family members usually disguised. Jalal remembered the disguise she was in when he met her and was lost in translation. "ok, for the plan I have I need one thousand gold coins" demanded Abdul and continued. "the plan is that you disguise yourself as a jewelry seller and wait for the butterfly. Butterflies are always attracted to nectar. That's a sure shot at meeting one", he said.
"Abdul, not bad. Good company has good impact on your brains", chuckled Jalal. He was referring to Abdul spending day in and day out with him. "Yeah, yeah, whatever" scoffed Abdul. So they hatched a plan to get close to the celestial nymph. "ok, what if it backfires Abdul? asked Jalal. "You are worse than an adolescent girl Jalal! When did you become so restless? Let's worry about it later. Now massage my head", replied Abdul. "yeah right. I shall massage your head and neck" said Jalal and pounced on Abdul. "Sorry Jahanpanaah! I was just kidding", said Abdul. Both the friends hugged and plotted the plan to be executed in the evening.
It seemed like a very long day for Jalal. He eagerly waited for the scarlet to kiss the sky and blackness to engulf. Then the alluring markets would beckon him and her. "Faster Abdul. Surely your fingers work faster than that" snapped Jalal. Abdul didn't reply and went on applying this odd oily paste on Jalal's body. It was meant to make Jalal look tanned like any other tradesman. He was executing the first step in their plan to disguise. Jalal was going to pretend to be a jeweler and Abdul his assistant. Jalal wore a traditional Jodhpuri attire, turban, Khada and leather jhootis. Nobody would definitely not recognize him. He also made Jalal wear rings in each of his fingers and many chains around his neck. Some of them were Jalal's own and others were ones that Abdul had obtained from the real Jeweler. The real jeweler had made a pact with Abdul to lend his stall for the evening for a 500 gold coins and any proceeds from the stall will also be handed off to him.
All was set and they proceeded to their stall in the trader's market. Abdul also made Jalal practice certain sentences to be spoken as a trader to entice his customers. Jalal was a fast learner and given the reason for his disguise, he was over enthusiastic. In no time, he appeared to be a perfect jeweler. His husky voice and the special accent would draw all the women of Mewar. Abdul just smirked looking at him and did not want to tease him anymore. So the two friends settled in their stall and waited for the right audience. The chemicals in somebody's body was churning and creating havoc but there was only nobody who could calm the churning down. Everybody was waiting for that nobody to appear.
Jodha, her sisters and some of her cousins all disguised in their daasi's outfits and sneaked out of the palace. They happily wandered towards the traders' market. "look Jodha, elephants, camels. How magnificent they look. I wish I could have a pet camel" wondered Shivani. Jodha and others just giggled at their sister's strange thoughts and continued. They were obviously attracted to stalls that sold silk, jewelry and other knickknacks. "Perfect color" said Mayuri as she grabbed a mauve color silk at a stall and shared her idea of making a beautiful outfit from it. They also visited various stalls displaying jewelry. Abdul's informers hurried to him and passed on the message that the royal ladies were nearby. Abdul started calling out loudly.
"Bangles, pins, chains and anklets
From all around the world
Come and get them
Let them adorn your hands, legs, necks and waist.
Come and get some gems garnet, ruby and emerald
Or come for the Pearl, the queen of gems or gem of queens
Rich and rare are these gems to be worn
Allure yourselves and others
Come and get them lovely ladies"
Abdul enticed his potential customers. Jalal was awestruck with Abdul's antics but understood the hidden agenda. He too repeated Abdul's words in husky voice who turned a few faces and made them walk over to his stall.
"Rock, pins, bangles and gold. Come and get them. Choose from gold, green, red or blue. Come and get the diamonds too. Or take the Kundan and pearl sets" shouted Jalal. Nobody noticed the alluring voice and was soon attracted to his stall. The spread of jewelry was indeed splendid. "Do you have any special waistbands or anklets" asked Jodha. Jalal was dumbstruck as he did not have an answer. Abdul covered for him and said "My fair lady, we have some special bangles. Red, green and good with fantastic Kundan work. You will not find them anywhere else". "Alright, show them", she said.
Jalal extended his hand forward along with the special bangles. "Jodha... Isssh! Sorry" blurted Shivani. "Jiji, they look exquisite and beautiful. Shall we try it", asked Sukanya. "alright, go ahead" said Jodha. Sukanya tried to pass them through her wrists but failed. "they are beautiful. But it's a shame they don't fit", said Shivani. "give it to me" said Jodha, as she tried it on.
But she too was not successful. With disappointment written all over her face, she opened her mouth to speak when she was stopped. "My fair lady, beautiful things are alluring and seducing. But they need to be handled with care", said Jalal in his husky voice. His gaze piercing through her. "let me help you", saying, he held Jodha's hand. Taking the bangle, he undid a small lever on the side of the bangle and slipped it through her wrist. The bangle slid through smoothly like butter. Still holding her hand, he locked the lever. Just for another second he held her hand unwilling to let go. But he had to be cautious and not raise any suspicion. He reluctantly let go, but said "Lady, you got to try it on the other hand too, to feel the full effect of these bangles". There was something in his voice which intrigued Jodha. She was a willing party to his suggestion. She forwarded her other hand for Jalal to put through the other bangle. Again, Jalal held her hand, undid the lever and passed the bangle through her wrists, all the while feeling the delicate yet strong wrists of Jodha. He felt the warmth and the tenderness of her hands. His heart beat raced ahead as if running a race and he felt breathless. He wanted to hold on to her just for a few more minutes. But he had to be tactical and not be stupid.
"My, my, these bangles look exquisite and beautiful on you my lady. You do look like a Princess" exclaimed Jalal. "Excellent. We shall take it" blurted Shivani and paid gold coins for them.
"Hang on ladies. I have a matching pair of anklet to go with them", said Jalal. "I can help you try them on" he suggested and forwarded the pair of anklets. Seeing them, the girls liked them and decided to buy it too. "Thank you DayaRamji. We will take them. No need to try them", she said, as Shivani paid for them. "Wish you had a waist chain to go with them", mumbled Jodha, as she loved the combination of red, green and gold with kundan work.
Jalal smirked and thought Yes, I wish too to offer you a waist chain and help you try them on'. He was already transported to his dreamland. "come on girls, let go and move on" uttered Jodha as the royal ladies left the jewelry stall and moved on.
hmmm.. delicate, yet strong wrists. Long lanky fingers adorned with henna. And this girl is a fierce warrior. I wonder how her soft hands turn like iron fists with a sword' spoke Jalal inwardly reminiscing the feel of her hands earlier in his hands. "so somebody had touched nobody while everybody was around" commented Abdul. Jalal was oblivious to things happening around him. He was lost in thoughts. "Hurry up Jalal, we need to pack up and leave. DayaRamji wants to wind down for the day. Come on let's go to our tents" said Abdul. Jalal snapped to realty and followed Abdul's instruction. He was happy and the happy glow was plastered all over his face. Finally, he was content, he thought.
Having returned to the tent, Jalal slumped onto his bed, as sleep seemed to embrace him after many days. Soon he went into sweet slumber. He was sleeping but not alone. His celestial nymph accompanied him as usual. This time, he had a clear vision of this nymph's face. He dreamt of her delicate yet strong wrists. He was over the moon when he breathed in the fragrance of her henna clad hands, as those delicate hands caressed his face and hair. He was entering the first step onto the zenith of ecstasy land. Just as he thought he felt her sitting next to him, he was jolted from his sweet slumber when he heard her voice saying let's go, time to move on'. He was wide awake but there was a happy glow. "How can this delicate damsel become a crouching tigress" he pondered and closed his eyes to re-live past events and went into his dreamland again.
You are beautiful for me
Delicate and soft, yet so strong
They were not small nor big
Such beautiful hands
It could have been a sculptor's dream
I'm sure there was no hue
I know how strong those hands could be
Yet they can be delicate to nurse
Alas! Can I hold a bit longer
Just a bit longer
To feel the warmth & tenderness
Has to be a Princess not a maid
Such Beautiful hands
Such was the sweet song sung by Jalal's heart as he dived deep into his dreamland.
