Hi Abhay,
Beautiful pictures of chattris. Thanks so much for sharing!
1.Seems like Rajputana (and Jain and Bengali also) influences were prominent on the architecture of FS. 😊 Was this due to the architect (Tuhir Das?) or due to the MUZ?I want to know a few more things, please. 😊2.I believe FS was abandoned sometime in the 1580s (?) by the Mughals. Then why were Akbar and the MUZ again brought to this city and buried here? Did they express any wish to be buried here?3.Did AKbar build his mausoleum even while he was still living in FS or later, after abandoning the city?4.Why is the MUZ mausoleum separate from that of Akbar, considering they were so close?
5.And even if it's separate, it's pretty simple compared to Akbar's mausoleum. Why is this so? Did MUZ herself approve of the design of her mausoleum or was it built later (after her death) by someone else?
Hi Radhika,
You're Welcome. My replies.

The architecture of FS is a mix of various techniques. While Bengali architecture is said to be influenced by Tuhir Das, but that pertains to the palace of Agra, majorly. In FS we mostly see culmination of Gujrati Jain temple(or, Rajputana) + Islamic architecture. Now, this can have many reasons. If you remember, in an old post here only, we mentioned of a farman which HK had given for one of her palaces in FS. So, her palace was majorly fitted with Hindu frescos, as that was constructed as per her wishes. Also, FS construction kept on continuing even after the Imperial Family had shifted her in 1571. It is said that Akbar, after the campaign in Gujarat in 1573, saw the Gujarati Jain architecture. He was influenced by this. And, consequently, the later buildings had a mixture of Hindu + Islamic style of synthesis. Actually, while constructing, NOT only a single person contributes. It is a culmination of ideas of several people. Tuhir Das was chief architect. Akbar must have poured in his views. HK's palace is one of the Oldest building in FS, and that is totally in Rajputana style. So, all types of architectures were present in a highly complex and mixed manner. Will add on this topic later. i do not have my diary now with me. I have noted some quotes by famous architects/travellers who have written reports on FS. Will quote them later. 😊

FS was abondoned in 1585 due to many emergencies in North-West frontier, the court was shifted to Lahore, main problem was from Abdullah Khan Uzbek, was a DANGEROUS enemy. Akbar stayed in North-West till 1599, when Abdullah Khan finally died. In 1599, he returned back.

Akbar started planning+site selection+construction "design" of his tomb in 1600, after returning from Lahore. Though, revamp was done by Jahangir. It is NOT known with certainty, how much work was done by Akbar. As far as i could dig, Akbar did planning + site selection + construction "design". And, later Jahangir made some changes in design and did the "actual" construction.
4.
Many reasons for this:
a. After Akbar's death, the bigots who resented Akbar's secularism gained prominence. Jahangir had to deal with them also.
b. Another reason, her being a Hindu, hence she was not supposed to get buried.
c. Even after all this, she is Akbar's ONLY Wife to have a resting place closest to him. I find even this to be a marvel as after Akbar, the air turned drastically in a different direction. Infact, even today we can see the power of clergy, and here we are imagining what could have been their power 450 years back.
Actually, there are many reasons, Poins a,b,c are most widely accepted, but i want to write when i get CONCRETE confirmation. I prefer avoiding giving my personal opinion, as history needs to written ONLY after due confirmation. There is NO scope for "personal opinions"😉.

This was commenced after her death. Her wish was to have a step-well/baoli, which was constructed by Jahangir. The design of MUZ's resting place appears simple. But, it is also a fine piece of architecture, i wrote some features on Page-86. And, it has suffered a lot of damage, hence it appears faded. Also, the complex was used by a missionary for many years, as a printing establishment. Hence, more damage. The white plaster is a LATER addition to the structure. 😊
