Hmm.. much water(***) has flown under the compare-Imlie-Jhanak bridge since my last msg and reactions to that.. got busy at work and couldn't respond in time..
I dont watch TV soaps at all. KA, HN, Gashmeer Mahajani, Sumbul -- all were equally new to me. I absolutely didnt have any SM account, never sought off-screen info about anyone in media/politics/sports/entertainment industry...
I caught Aniruddh Bose quite accidentally on my TV because of a wrong press on the remote. I felt propelled to find out who the actor is, name of the show, how can I catch it etc etc. For the very 1st time I downloaded an OTT app, paid for it and watched Jhanak. As I watched him in Jhanak, I felt compelled to search for his other shows.. I created a pvt, no friends/followers type IG account too as most of you here would fwd IG links about Jhanak.
None of this happened to me when I watched Imlie and GM as Adi.. I don't have ANYTHING against him.. he just didnt catapult me into wanting to see more... I didnt even bother finding his real name..
I could not FFwd AB in Jhanak while trying to catch-up with the series..many a times I have replayed the scenes.. Whereas I would never stop for Adi ( for that matter anyone) in Imlie.. I could FF Imlie easily.. only coming back when i have missed something important in the story... I didnt complete it even..
IF is my first SM engagement :) I came here forced by the incoherence of Jhanak... I learnt here that Imlie is the predecessor and tried it to decode how Jhanak my go..
So, Whether I liked KA as AB over GM as Adi.. I have to say YES. KA as AB worked for me, GM as Adi didn't.. no offense meant to anybody!
I would stop for Sumbul village scenes on the other hand. She caught my attention - I noted her name and had looked up her Wiki page a few episodes into Imlie. I liked the way she portrayed agility & confidence of Imlie, full of girlish energy and youth. She appeared absolutely at ease with the character and I liked her diction - I dont belong to the region but at least I couldn't spot any lack of fluency in her dialogues...
All the parts shot in village, I found her very beautiful in the earthy look, esp post-marriage. Her dusky skin, no makeup (or perhaps makeup that didnt look made-up), simple cotton saree that she carried extremely well, a very traditional style of wearing kaajal, simple solid red bindi and sindhoor thats not gaudy but doesnt fail to draw attention at the same time.. my idea of "conventional Indian beauty".
Regarding HN, there are many places, I was absolutely impressed by HN - her expressions, elegance... Absolutely liked the Urvashi's daughter part. During "maid/refugee in SirJi's house part", Jhanak had to look very simple and yet beautiful. Armed with only everyday-type salwars, no makeup or jewellery, HN delivered it 100% - she was very convincing as "a maid giving Arshi a run for her girl-friend status"... elegance in her body language did the magic!
She disappointed me the most in the heart-attack track where a very sick Sirji is laying in Jhanak's lap in the car... HN fell short in both body-lang and emoting here. Instead of seeing a deeply worried Jhanak, I could see a very uneasy, awkward HN in that scene.. is she hesitant of holding a male actor so close... !!
A scene where a lovelorn SirJi is singing in Appudi's post-wedding party and Jhanak is in a Mumbai hotel, that same song playing on radio. Jhanak is crying.. I cant exactly say whats lacking but HN didnt work for me here.. Another one of excruciatingly sad/broken Jhanak scene was when Aniruddh is forced to marry a pregnant Arshi .. I was convinced by how KA showed SirJi's emotions here.. just the next scene, Jhanak is sitting all alone by a small table and crying.. the scene was supposed to be soaked in emotions but HN failed to move me... so artifical as though the tears were counted and dropped on her cheeks..
Both these scenes were HN solo scenes, nobody else in the frame and she was not up to mark, for me.. !!
Post-Return from Gujarat onwards, her hairstyle was a BIG put off for me.. like shouting out "I am a WIG.." I cant blame HN if PH dressed her up this way..
And in the entire Simbulboni track, the way she carried the saree irked me (I know most of you may disagree).
She was so graceful and stunning in all saree scenes of Calcutta.. Even in the "Kaun Jhanak" promo she looks good in the saree but not in the actual Simulboni track.
HN was supposed to appear an educated-girl (that was Nutan's image among the villagers).. Instead the way she wore, crumpled, soiled, unevenly stretched up on different parts of her frail body, the blouse too big for the few micrograms of flesh on her arms... Agreed, the saree was designed dull & unworthy, but she could have wrapped it a bit more elegantly...
