'I can't work without Sanju'

Although Sanjay Dutt's fate is yet to be decided in the blast case, pal Mahesh Manjrekar is already planning a movie with him

DEEPALI DHINGRA

Mahesh Manjrekar's last few films might not have been able to create waves at the box office but the maverick director cum actor already has a couple of films planned for the future. And one of them is with good friend Sanjay Dutt. "I had announced a film called An Unusual Love Story with him I'll do it next year because I want to complete it in one schedule," he says. But what about Sanjay's verdict which is still to be decided by the TADA court? "He'll come out absolutely clean," says Mahesh firmly. He adds, "There's someone up there looking after him and soon people will realise that he's a wonderful human being. I can't work without Sanju," he adds with a smile. Movies apart, Mahesh is enjoying his stint as a dancer in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. And to his surprise, the audience as well as the judges are liking his performances. "My daughter is stunned," he laughs, adding that she had thought her father has gone mad when he had told her about participating in the show. Apparently, it is the tapori touches he's put in his salsa and rhumba dances that are getting him all the whistles. "I told my choreographer that the audience will not be able to identify with these complex dance forms for the whole time. So I told her to stick to the dance form but asked her to incorporate a bit of Mahesh in it too," he smiles.

Shveta Salv
Shveta snubbed

She may have won the hearts of the Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa's judges, but Shveta Salve didn't exactly get lauded for her dance from Mahesh Manjrekar's daughter Ashvami.

An insider says, "After the show, Ashvami told Shveta that she may have won the round, but her father was the best."

A confused Shveta didn't know whether to take the comment in her stride or give Ashvami a rebuttal.

Hanif: I'm too sexy for my pants!

Hanif Hilal and Pooja Bedi
Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa's ousted contestant Pooja Bedi's choreographer Hanif Hilal has been receiving flak for wearing silver pants in the Sony dance contest.

As the show is based on the Latin American dance , the norm is black trousers for men. In yesterday's HiTLIST ('Pooja ousted from Jhalak'), Hanif claimed that this is what the channel's stylists had designed for him. But the stylists are furious with him.

"It was Hanif who insisted on silver. Pooja's outfit in fuchsia blue was the most elegant. He was adamant on silver trousers and claimed he knew a lot about Latin American dance.

So there was no point explaining to him. And look what happened." According to Sandeep Soparrkar, technical director, Jhalak, "In Latin dance forms, high-waited black pants are worn by men so that the colourful costumes of the women can look attractive. In Latin dance, a man's job is to show off his women's grace and elegance, not overshadow the women's clothes!"

Spotlight: By Prashant Singh

The reality wave has hit desi television with a ven-geance. How else can one explain the deluge of "real" drama on the small screen? In September action takes centrestage across most entertainment channels. So, if Zee brings back Cinestars Ki Khoj, MTV Roadies 4 gets hardcore and Sahara One hunts for Superstars across the country. Buoyed by the success of Nach Baliye last year, Star One, too, unleashes the second season with 10 new celebrity couples.

"Nach Baliye is a known brand. In fact, depending on the success of the second edition, we might also plan a third show," says Shailja Kejriwal, creative director, Star India. That's not all. Zee intends to further hot up the fight with Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2006-07. For the uninitiated, Zee already features reality-based shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs and Shabaash India. "A channel shouldn't show more than one or two reality programmes. Otherwise, it becomes too much for the viewers," opines Ashish Kaul, senior vice-president (corporate brand development), Zee TV.

With increasing shows and cut-throat competition squeezing TRPs, the great Indian reality spectacle is getting huge. This year will witness some of the biggest reality shows: Big Brother, Extreme Makeover and Dancing With the Stars among others. Even Sahara's Superstars, known as Stars in Their Eyes in Europe, airs in 10 countries with 62 seasons. Sony's latest offering Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, too, is an adaptation of BBC's hit reality show Dancing With the Stars. The show brings together celebs from different fields to perform with professional dance partners. "Reality shows lend a certain amount of surprise and unpredictability to the channel's bouquet," informs Anupama Mandloi, programming head, Sony India.

Sony has much more up its sleeve. If the second season of Fear Factor returns by the year end, Indian Idol 3 and Fame Gurukul make a comeback in 2007. Then, for the first time, Sony will bring an adventure-based reality show, Paisa Bhari Padega, in early 2007. But the question arises: is it too much to handle? "Certainly not," says N.P. Singh, COO, Sony India. "It's a good time for viewers as they have a lot to choose from," he adds.

Celebrity judges add glam factor to shows

TV channels have found a new mantra to reach the stars — celeb judges. So, if Urmila Matondkar was recently named as one of the judges for Superstars, Shilpa Shetty is the latest entrant on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (JDJ). Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, too, joins Shilpa as a JDJ judge. "Personally, I enjoy dancing a lot. So, I am really looking forward to watch them grooving," says Shilpa.

The list continues. While Kunal Kohli replaces Farhan Akhtar for Nach Baliye 2, choreographer Saroj Khan and Malaika Arora Khan continue with the second season. Even baddie Gulshan Grover and crooner Mika have joined the fray for MTV Roadies 4. And it's not just filmstars, but TV actors are also turning judges. Mona Singh of Jassi fame, for one, is set to anchor Extreme Makeover. But does the glam quotient really help? "Celeb value surely gets more viewers and eyeballs, but the show built around a star fails," says Purnendu Bose, COO, Sahara One. The idea, as the channel heads put it, "is to get experts who can judge various talents."

REAL MONEY
Thanks to the blitz of reality tube shows, channels are game to loosen their purse strings liberally. According to an estimate, Indian Idol cost Sony $2-3 million, which comes down to Rs 50-60 lakhs per episode. Two years later, the production cost has shot up by at least 10-15 per cent. So, with channels leaning on bigger and better products, "real" action might be in the offing.

'I don't know if Farah is harsh'

Akashh Deep
Best known as the long-haired, evil Ansh from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Akashh Deep Saigal has now gone in for a drastic makeover. The blonde hair has been cropped short, and he now plays the devoted son, Eklavya, in Kyunki.

And as if to reinforce his positive image, he's also been sporting a tilak on his forehead. It seems to have done his some good, considering he's really popular with the ladies on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. He tells us about his new innings.

Why are you sporting a tikka?
I am heavily into spiritualism, and one of my gurujis advised me to put a tikka every day. It helps me think straight, it helps me stay focussed. I feel confident when I put it on.

Are you a religious person?
Yes. Every morning, there's a pooja at home. I'm a Shiv bhakt.

How do you stay in touch with your gurujis? You go to them or...
(Interrupts) They come over to my place. I think that everybody needs a guruji in his/her life. Not so long ago, I used to feel that I am the guru of everybody, but not anymore.

Are you wearing this tikka because you want to win the Jhalak crown?
No. I've been wearing the tikka since the last four months. At that time, Jhalak... ki koi jhalak bhi nahin thi!

Why don't we see you dancing with the tikka on?
At the end of the day, Jhalak is a show. So I have to remove it during the performance.

Then why do you retain it in Kyunki...?
There it goes with my positive character.

Some people thought that you weren't up to the mark in the first round. You hardly moved and your clothes weren't good either.
I danced to Ya Ali (Gangster) and it would have been funny if I had danced a lot on this number. Let me tell you that in Jhalak... the contestants are not allowed to choose their songs nor the costumes. I danced and wore what I was given.

It's being said that ex-girlfriend Farah Khan is very harsh in judging you?
I really wouldn't know. Logon ko aisa lag raha hai, but I don't think so. Maybe she expects a lot more out of me. If you know someone really well, you set higher standards for him or her. Like she expects the best from me, even I expect the best from her.

Rate her work, Main Hoon Na.
She was very good for her first film.

Why did you and Farah split?
We were together for two years. And then came a point when we both felt that things were not working out. The separation was a mutual decision. I wouldn't like to into the details now. Today, Farah is married and I respect her a lot.

Were you invited to her shaadi?
Yes, but I did not attend.

Why?
I was out of town.

What happened when you met her at Jhalak...?
We spoke to each other. We laughed. We are professionals and we are mature. Old things can't ruin our present. I hadn't spoken to her after her shaadi. There was no animosity between us when we parted ways. So, there was no element of discomfort.

Request!

Moochh nahin, toh kooch nahin
Look, we know that everyone can't be a jack of all trades. And we are only happy to know that celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor is human. He is not the best dancer we've seen, as is evident from his gawky moves on celeb dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. And we are willing to forgive him, if he brings back his moustache. His debut performance saw him rip off a nakli moochh with machismo, and we saw our mothers and grandmothers cringe in their sofas. Unke liye hi sahi, get that moustache back on, Sanjeev.

Celeb house arrest

Parmeet Sethi
Television actor

If you could bring back one show, which would you pick?
I would love to watch new seasons of F.R.I.E.N.D.S and The X files. These were my favourite television shows.

If you could play any character from a show, who would it be?
I would kill to play Ba from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, because she never dies.

Who's your TV buddy?
My wife, Archana.

Your first TV crush?
All I watched while growing up was Chayageet, so, I didn't really have a TV crush.

Which films would you choose for a night-in?
Godfather 1,2 and 3. This trilogy is like a bible for me. I can never get tired of watching these classics.

As told to Kanika Parab
