Ajay Jadeja, Sanjeev Kapoor to put on their dancing shoes on Sony

Indiantelevision.com Team

(23 August 2006 5:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Hindi general entertainment channel Sony has had success in the reality genre in the past with shows like Indian Idol. The channel is hoping to consolidate further with a new dance based reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Dancing With The Stars. The show kicks off on 7 September and airs every Wednesday and Thursday at 10 pm.
Actor Shilpa Shetty (one of the judges) along with the celebrity contestants Rati Agnihotri, Shweta Salve, Mona Singh and Mahesh Majrekar

For the uninitiated, the show is based on the BBC format Strictly Come Dancing. It also achieved success in the US on ABC.

There the show is called Dancing With The Stars. Basically well known personalities will show off their dancing skills. They will undergo two weeks of training with their partners who specialise in dancing.
For Sony's show, the celebrities chosen are former cricketer Ajay Jadeja, celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, actress Rati Agnihotri, television anchor Pooja Bedi, TV actress Mona Singh, director Mahesh Manjrekar, TV star Shweta Salve and TV actor Akashdeep Sehgal.

The show is being produced by Synergy and Theatre Red. Each episode will see one team eliminated. Viewers can vote through SMS. The judges are director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, choreographer Farah Khan and actress Shilpa Shetty. Equal weightage in terms of points will be given to both the judges and the SMS' sent in by the viewers.

Set India COO NP Singh with ace choreographer Sandip Soparkar and SET senior V-P and programming head Anupama Mandloi

Speaking on the initiative, Sony COO N P Singh says, "The show is all about super achievers in their respective fields who are here yet again to excel in something new. The winner takes home Rs. 5 million. What is unique compared to other shows (read Star One's Nach Baliye) is that the celebrities do not know how their ability to dance is or is not. Maybe they will discover that they possess a talent to dance. We drew out a list of possible participants. We then decided that these were the celebrities who would be the best fit."

BBC Worldwide director of emerging territories Monisha Shah says, "The show is as good as it gets. It has swept global audiences off their feet and has become a ratings blockbuster in every continent. With its wonderful combination of glamour, talent and passion we are especially excited that Sony has taken BBC Worldwide's format and tailored it so well for the Indian audience. The judges, hosts, celebrities and their partners are all in place."

Synergy founder Siddharth Basu says," Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Dancing With The Stars is a grand and a glamorous show which is as much about live wire personalities and the fun of fusion dance as it is about the grit behind the glamour. It is not just about the usual suspects going through all too familiar routines but about the performance and pain of public figures who are not trained dancers and the fantastic journey they undertake to pit their best foot forward. That is what makes it the mother of all shows and that is what is making it work in countries around the world."

On the marketing front to push the show, Singh says that promo spots have been created. These are airing on the channel as well as in cinema halls. The channel is also taking out hoardings and is looking to have a presence in malls. There will also be print ads.

Thodi khushi, thode gham

Shevta Salve and fiance Rodney Barnes
Comparisions may be odious, but Star One's Nach Baliye still lingers. A dance show that followed last year's superhit show had to be bigger and better.

We were ready to be wooed but JDL has left us cold. Also, the format of three judges and one of two hosts waiting backstage had a lot of NB recall.

To be fair, we don't remember whether we liked the Nach Baliye jingle from the word go, but it sure was catchy. Jhalak... may or may not grow on us. Also, the show's set resembled a yesteryear Bolly film set, almost like we'd been transported to the '70s.

Rip the script

The script was trite, tired and tacky. We yawned each time Parmeet told the contestants, "Meri dharampatni backstage wait kar rahi hai". At one point he even said, "Aapki bhabhi backstage wait kar rahi hai". Did they kidnap the writer of a Bhojpuri flim to pen the the lines? And what was with that 'Tak dhina dhin' after every break?

Only band, no baaja

There was a band present on the set but were they just for show? We noticed them sitting idle with their instruments in the background! Since they were not playing, what was the need to place the musicians as mute props? For stage effect, perhaps? It's a dance show for Pete's sake, so give us the muzik!

Pooja Bedi and Mahesh Manjrekar at the after party

Butler service

Archana
Whoever styled Parmeet Sethi, should be shot. He looked like a butler, not an anchor. And Farah Khan kept referring to him as Bittu (his pet name).

The thing you need to know about TV stars: they're better known as their screen names rather than their real names. So using pet names is stretching the familiarity a tad bit.

Dress circle

Apparently, there is no single dress designer for the show. Each contestant is up to their own thing with individual designers.

And the results showed. The costumes were extremely outlandish, some even scary. Was it necessary for the contestants to wear loud, garish colours coupled with flowers, glitter, frills and flounces? Please hire a designer, ASAP. Especially for Rati Agnihotri.

Main solah baras ki

Ajay Jadeja
What was with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's sugary act with Rati Agnihotri?

Agreed Ek Duje Ke Liye was a rage, and that the actress was dancing again after 24 years. She was fun, but did she deserve the high points?

Mr Bhansali, the show is about dancing, not nostalgia. It might help to remember that next time. And while on him, we prefer the scowling Bhansali way more than the smiling Bhansali. Please come back, all's forgiven!

Where's Lady Luck?

Bechara Akashdeep! He got the lowest scores on the first show. Frankly, there were others who performed a lot worse. We liked Akash's act but Lady Luck wasn't smiling down on him. His choreographer thought Akash was good, and we thought she was terrific too. At least they made for some much-needed eye candy.

Mona Singh
Ajay jaaa

Ajay Jadeja was annoying, to say the least. If only he could prove his skills through his steps and not his highhanded talking. Rea, his choreographer, certainly has one tough student on her hands.

Oooh Mona!

She dressed right to hide all the extra inches and surprise, surprise, moved well too. The erstwhile Jassi did her steps well with choreographer Tobby. Last night, truly Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin thi!

Shilpa: It's only words

Shilpa Shetty sure knew what she was talking about. Her comments were precise and to the point, she wasn't fawning over anyone and wasn't the wallflower that everyone expected her to be. Take a bow, lady.

Ravi Behl, Archana and Javed Jaffrey
Meethi churi

And now, for our favourite judge, Farah Khan. She had us right from her oh-so-sweet entry, and was the fairest judge of them all (like duh!). She calls a spade a spade. We like that. But wasn't she a tad harsh on Akash? We thought so.

Sweet!

And, of course, super chef Sanjeev Kapoor had us eating out of his hands. His act was the cutest, especially the part where he rips off his chef's outfit and then the staid moustache. Totally hilarious! We thought Mahesh Manjrekar was cool too.

Arshad gives Jhalak a thumbs up

Arshad Warsi used to be a professional dancer, so he should know. At the age of 21, he participated in the World English Jazz Dancing Competition and won the fourth prize.

Such is his love for dance, that he wants to establish an academy to teach modern jazz and also make a film on dance someday. So he was our top choice for a review on Sony's new show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Read on for Arshad's take on the show.

Judge Jules

I watched the show and thought it was fabulous. Apart from the dancing, the judging and the set too looked nice. I liked the part they showed in the beginning where the participants had zero confidence, looked overweight and unfit, and from that you see them coming on stage and giving some amazing performances. It just went to show their hard work and level of dedication towards the competition. I liked they way Farah judged the contestants and gave them marks. As some one who enjoys dancing and watching a performance, I really had a good time.

You rock, man!

I was totally bowled over by Mahesh Manjrekar and Ajay Jadeja. These guys were the surprise package. Even Mona (Singh) for that matter was good. I don't know if she dances this well off screen too. I think Mahesh and Ajay were having a genuinely good time, and that was evident from their expressions.

Even Sanjeev Kapoor stunned me as he had some serious Latin moves going on there! I haven't judged a dance show on television, but have been to various competitions. For me, it's all about having a good time. If I see some one who carries himself well, is good at his dance and is having a blast, then he's my man.

Have a blast

If there's anything I would like to tell these contestants, then I'd say just remember it's all about enjoying yourselves. Even though it is a serious dance competition, I hope everybody has a good time at the end of the day. Maria (Goretti, his wife) was sitting next to me glued to the TV and voting for her favourite dancers. This is just the first episode and in time the show and the dancing of these contestants will get much better and more enjoyable.

As told to Tushar Joshi

Reality bites on channels again...

(Posted on 8 September 2006)

The song n dance season begins!

"Nach Baliye is starting tonight, an enthusiastic albeit ill-informed neighbour enthused yesterday. Can't fault her really, though. One successful format on one channel spawns another, uncannily similar (with a few variations to steer clear of plagiarism allegations). But when it happens to almost coincide with the second season of the original, what do you do?

Although Sony and Star One may go blue in the face pointing out the differences in style, treatment and star power on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Nach Baliye respectively, to the ordinary man in the street, it remains a dance competition between celebrities. Of course, the viewers are more educated person now - he knows and values the importance of the choreographer, hitherto ambiguous entity, in the scheme of things.

Oh well, so Sony's Jhalak.... launched with a bang yesterday. There are eight participants against NB's ten, and the difference is that they are paired with their choreographers, not the spouses. The families are gathered in the audience to give their ecstatic reactions. The judges' triumvirate is well chosen - Shilpa Shetty for her glam quotient, Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his sober, often sombre evaluations, and the perky Farah Khan (now almost a resident Sony judge since Indian Idol) who chides and praises with equal felicity. The judging atmosphere is relaxed, witty and friendly with a lot of hugs and kisses for the participants. Parmeet Sethi hosts with elan, but wife Archana Puran Singh as the co-host in the back room, is wasted - she hasn't much of a job, except to boost the participants' confidence and watch the scores.

As for the celebs, being made to do what they just ain't good at, isn't always entertaining. Master chef Sanjeev Kapoor's two left feet, veteran actor Rati Agnihotri's efforts to look agile and former cricketer Ajay Jadeja's attempts at salsa were a tad embarrassing, even for the viewer! The others surprisingly, were pleasing in their new roles, notably director Mahesh Manjrekar, whose candid comments about his abilities raised the show to a higher level.

Credit is however due to the talented choreographers, who not only have to train their wayward wards, but also match steps with the celebs on stage in the actual performances! Quite unlike Nach Baliye, where the choreographers stay behind the scenes. But Jhalak... follows a similar system of participants heading back stage to check out scores, along with the CO-host, and even the scores are read out similarly. A similar system of voting out the eliminated participant per week is also followed. Can you blame my poor neighbour for mixing the two shows?

Costume drama

Rati Agnihotri refused the offer of a professional costume designer. Now her body-hugging golden costume has come under flak

Ranjib Mazumder

Rati Agnihotri's outfit in the first episode of Jhhalak Dikhla Jaa has not gone down well with people. If the grapevine is to be believed, some of the participants and the designers are appalled by the costumes she has worn in Jhhalak Dikhla Jaa. Designers have said that her dresses have odd colours. Besides, they are body-hugging, which made her look overweight.

Incidentally, all the participants were given the option of having professional costume designers do their clothes for them, but Rati declined the offer. She said she would use her own designer, Sapna, who works with her in all her projects. Unfortunately, the costumes have bombed.

When contacted, Rati appeared blissfully ignorant of the whispers about her costumes. In fact, she sounded surprised that no one had come forward to tell her about her costumes, directly. "No one has complained to me about my costumes. I guess, keeping in mind my seniority, people are not criticising my costumes directly. But, people cannot expect me to wear revealing clothes. I cannot dress like the other young girls, I need to dress according to my age," she said.

"I am pretty open to criticism," she added. "I do not know how others feel, but I am happy with my costumes since they are really comfortable to wear and dance in. I am very happy with Sapna's work who, although not a professional, is my full-time designer."

Rati also explained why her golden costume was different from the other contestants' costumes. "I danced to a song that belongs to the '60s. It was a Shammi Kapoor song and the costume that I wore was apt for it. Sapna designed the costume keeping the song in mind. I felt it went down pretty well with the song. It is an old-fashioned song and even my hairstyle was old-fashioned. More importantly, the songs were given to us by the channel; we are not free to choose our own songs," she said.

The actress added, "People who are making negative comments about my costumes should realise that most of the contestants are in their 20s and 30s, while I am 45 years old – and still participating in a dance show. Although I am doing films now, the last time I danced was way back in 1985, in Tawaif."

All criticism notwithstanding, the actress is very excited about dancing after so many years. Now she is preparing for a contemporary peppy song for the next round. Of course, she refuses to reveal the song.

The secret behind Shveta's success...

Those who saw the first episode of Jhalak Dikhla Ja would vouch for the fact that Shveta Salve has really got the moves! Not only did she and her choreographer-partner Longinus Fernandes receive many a loud applause, but they also managed to win the judges' votes, and are currently leading the race.
While rumour had it that Shveta is a trained dancer, Sandip Soparrkar, the technical director of the show, says that although she confessed that she loves dancing, she is not a professionally trained dancer. But according to Sandip, what got Shveta the plus points was the fact that she'd done her homework. "She actually watched movies like Dance With Me to see how the dancers conduct themselves, how exactly they dress etc. In fact, the bow she did at the end of her dance was perfected from Vanessa Williams in Dance With Me," says Sandip.

The right verdict

Judges Farah Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shilpa Shetty are making their presence felt in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

Subhash K Jha

It has been only a few days, and the judges on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, are being discussed more than the contestants.

Laughs Sanjay, "I wonder why is my presence in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa being discussed so avidly? Of course I'm having a ball. I'm being generous with my marks because I'm not a professional dancer. I react emotionally to the contestants. People are asking me why I gave such high marks to Ratiji (Agnihotri). It's because I genuinely found her outstanding. I kept remembering her song Solah Baras Ki Bali Umar Ko Salaam from her debut film Ek Duje Ke Liye. And I thought she was 16 again. Frankly speaking, I think Farah, Shilpa and I are not there to behave like know-it-alls. We're there to make sure everyone, including the judges have fun."

Shilpa Shetty who's currently in Chennai is equally bowled over by the positive response.

"This is my first foray into television. And I was nervous. But we're having so much fun. And I'm truly looking forward to more. Watching these contestants dance, I think I will develop an inferiority complex soon. And are we too generous in our judgment? I don't think so. Ratiji was fabulous. She's the senior-most contestant and to think she can dance the way she did after three slip discs! Anyway, viewers have only seen one episode. I think the contest with get tougher and the judges, stricter."

Adds Farah Khan, "Sanjay reacted emotionally to Ratiji. I think he has every right to give the marks he wants. I'm a professional choreographer on the show, I've to be more careful. I can't approve of a wrong move...just like Sonu Nigam on Indian Idol, who had to be stricter because he's a professional singer. I'm the strictest of the three judges, I guess. So I guess I'll be the most hated one on the show. But seriously, we judges are not there in to participate in a popularity contest. I think people should focus on the contestants instead."

Bye bye saas bahu

- Harshikaa Udasi

ARTS & STYLE

A powerful breed of women rules the prime time

Jai is caught in the pain of love. The father-to-be is on the brink of divorce from his wife, Bani, whom he loves deeply. But she hates him. The tussle between the couple is giving sleepless nights to Sudha Aggarwal, a mother of two. The middle-aged, suave Jai is as much her favourite as is the 20-something Bani, and their family life is her daily dose of entertainment.
Recently, when Mumbai's cablewallahs pulled the plug for two days, it was nothing short of a disaster for people like Sudha (and here's an increasing tribe).
No doubt, television has tightened its hold over the country's populace, and television stars are no less than movie celebrities: a larger-than-life status, media attention and a crazy fan following. For actors, TV is suddenly the place to be.
Channels are of course cashing in on the burgeoning medium; slugging it out in a free-for-all, ensuring that audiences are riveted to that couch. In the last three months, there have been new shows on every channel: Sony-Vaidehi and Akela; Star One-Resham Dankh, Naya Office Office; Star Plus-Viraasat, Thodi Si Zameen...Thoda Aasman, Karam Apnaa Apna; and Zee-Shaabash India, Johny Aala Re and Banoo Mein Teri Dulhan.
In September, the fight goes full throttle as reality formats featuring celebrities make a comeback. Sony's Jhalak Dikhla Jaa-Dancing with the Stars has eight popular faces including cricketer Ajay Jadeja, actor-host Pooja Bedi, actor Rati Agnihotri, and TV face Mona 'Jassi' Singh. Sony has roped in Farha Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shilpa Shetty as judges. Keeping step with the rival is Star One, which is back with season two of Nach Baliye, with ten new jodis. Saroj Khan, Malaika Arora Khan and Kunal Kohli will take the judges' chair. Sahara One joins the fray with talent hunt Super Stars judged by Urmila Matondkar.
The action doesn't stop there. There are more new themes, more new faces, more new shows. Star One brings you Lucky, a one-hour weekly about a teenage boy who has been designated saviour of the world, Antariksh, a daily adventure series about space and a new Balaji show. Zee has yet another woman-centric serial Betiyaan, while Sony will air the Indianised Big Brother and Extreme Makeover besides two action shows.
From an idiot box to an impressive box, television is big and so are television stars. No geeky secretaries or saccharine-oozing bahus; the new television superstars essay closer-to-life characters. A breed of powerful women are here: Zee has righteous Bani in Kasamh Se and dark-skinned Saloni in Saat Phere. Sony has the progressive bahu Sneha in Thodi Khushi Thode Gham and Star Plus has its oomph factor Priyanka in the mega-starrer Viraasat. Zee seems to have the only male icon in Mills 'n' Boon-styled tycoon Jai Walia of Kasamh Se.
It is big money, too. And none of our top actors thinks anything of working 14-hour shifts without breaks for 22-26 days a month.
Ram Kapoor, who has been playing Jai for the last six months, says it has been a long way to the top. He started in the afternoon slot with Ghar Ek Mandir almost six years ago, took a break to do films like Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi and an English film, Missed Call, and made a strong comeback with a prime time Balaji character.
In his mid-30s, Ram plays a character at least ten years older, who falls in love with a much younger girl. But he seems okay. "I love to play characters as different as possible from the real me," he says. "I knew how this character was shaping up, the exact look that he would be given. It was exciting." Kasamh Se was first of the Balaji shows to have intimate bedroom scenes.
Prachi Desai, who plays the simple Bani, is rumoured as the latest Ekta favourite. This may prove quite beneficial for the petite 17-year-old whose track in the show has been reportedly altered to give her character interesting hues.
For Sangeeta Ghosh, Ravi Chopra-directed multistarrer Viraasat marked her return to the prime time slot, since playing Pammi in Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand. "I have no qualms in admitting it's a big kick to be on prime time," says the actor. She played Veera in Rabba Ishq Na Hove besides co-hosting Nach Baliye-1.
Her current role has been in the news for the steamy scenes with co-actor Rohit Roy, but she says she is not averse to the 'sexy' tag. "When we shot for the scene with me under a black satin sheet, the viewers didn't know that I had jeans and a top on. We just have to act out our roles," she says. She believes that acting is about "reacting convincingly to situations" and to achieve that, she takes up only one show at a time.
Rajshri Thakur's maiden TV show Saat Phere has put Zee ahead of Star Plus in the ratings. The actor who played the lead in an Indo-French film Hawa Aane De, confesses that she thought the producers hadn't seen her photograph when they called her to audition for Saloni. "All they wanted to know was whether I had long hair," she says. The dusky actor later realised that the story was about a dark-skinned girl who faced problems due to her complexion.
The Thakur household is proud of their daughter who has inspired dark-skinned boys and girls across India to shed their inhibitions and pursue their dreams. For a country obsessed with skin colour, that's a lot. "I feel happy when I realise that my character not only is popular but has also influenced people," she says.
Shveta Salve who is eagerly waiting to put on her dancing shoes in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa already has her hands full. She plays Dr Ritu Mishra, a psychiatrist, on Left Right Left on SAB TV, and the male basher corporate honcho Malaika Banerjee on Sahara's Kittu Sab Jaanti Hai, besides hosting PopKorn on Zoom.
"Honestly, I'd rather be known as an actor. But people have seen me only in glamorous roles and associate a certain image with mine," says the ex-Gladrags Mega Model finalist.
Deepa Parab is trying to keep Sony's rating steady with her portrayal of the modern day bahu in Thodi Khushi Thode Gham. The theatre girl has done Marathi teleserials, too. "I have also been lucky in getting great directors," says Deepa. "But sometimes, daily soaps turn out to be no-brainers. You end up reacting to a camera which doesn't satisfy the actor in you." The popularity is something she enjoys. Jains walking up to her and greeting her with Jai Jinendra (Sneha is a Jain in the serial) and calling her by her screen name is a great feeling.
One male actor creating ripples on television is Sumit Raghavan, better known as Dr Saahil Sarabhai, the mollycoddled son of Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai. Sumit started as a child artiste, acted in Marathi plays Mala Bhent Havi Ho-which won him the award for best child artiste-and Rang Umaltya Manache. Sumit also tested his dubbing skills, but was back on TV for a Star Plus show Ek Do Teen and a comedy called Shubh Mangal Savadhan.
However, it was his role in Sarabhai... that made him famous. "Saahil was actually not funny, but it was the amazing lines scripted for him that made it appear so", he says. Sumit plays Savio, the humorous bhoot on Akela and Shantanu on Resham Dankh. "My TV career is going fine now. I do limited shows because I need to give my family also some time," says the father of two.
With star status and media glare, can controversy be far behind. Ram Kapoor got a taste of this when his comments about a male co-star led to articles questioning his sexuality. The married Ram says that it was a fun story, done to reveal his humorous side. TV actors are realising that being in the news helps. Says Sangeeta Ghosh, "Publicity, whether good or bad, always works. So there is no need to be judgmental about it."
They are working their way up and definitely Bollywood dreams are on the horizon. But not at the cost of their blossoming TV career. They are smart enough to realise that no KJo film is awaiting them, but are on the lookout for that meaty role. Till then, tellywood is happening!

Farah and Sanjay's Jhalak reunion
By: Subhash K Jha
September 12, 2006

Farah Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Sanjay Bhansali and Farah Khan have revived their mutual friendship on the sets of Sony's Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa.

Says Sanjay emotionally, "Farah and I started off together in 1942: A Love Story. We had the privilege of visually creating R D Burman's last melodies. That will always remain among the best work we've done in the last 14 years. Ever since we've always got along very well. We did have a long cold war between us. But now we're even more comfortable with each other."

Good old days

Says Farah, "One of the best things about Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is I get to spend time with Sanjay. We laugh a lot. I've jokingly told the Sony people
they'd have to re-do my contract. I'm only looking after Sanjay the whole day.

When we meet up we keep going back to our good old days. We didn't speak to each other for seven to eight years. The more you love
a person the more he can hurt you. In between, he had become quite an
angry young man. Now he's just an emotional old man."

Sassy Shetty

Talking about Shetty, Farah says, Shilpa too "I'm working with for the first time. I had done an ad with her. But never choreographed a dance. We're having so much fun. For Sony, Sanjay is this great personality. For me he's just good old Sanjay. And I get to have his mom's daal-dhokli again. I've missed Sanjay.

It was so stupid for us to have fought. We were both insecure earlier. Now we're happier and able to laugh at life."

Jhalak's USP

Khan says that the way she judges contestants has changed with this dance show.

"On Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa he's become like what I used to be on Indian Idol — emotional and giving marks generously. I've become like Sonu Niigaam from Indian Idol, hawk-eyed and very stern. The nice thing about this show is that the contestants are non-dancers and still surprising us with their dancing skills."

Adds Khan further, "Ajay Jadeja, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sanjeev Kapoor and Mona Singh are very delightful. And Sweta Salve is heroine material. And the judges are the USP. All three of us know about song and dance. All three of us are the best in our fields. Shilpa is looking so glamorous. She makes Sanjay and me look like her country cousins," adds Khan.

Why did the Sanjay-Farah dosti suffer?

Both were choreography assistants to Vidhu Vinod Chopra during 1942: A Love Story. While Farah was to be billed as the choreographer, Sanjay was credited as the director of songs. Somewhere the line dividing the two fledgling technicians' job got blurred. And Sanjay felt he was being sidelined in all the publicity and marketing. This created a rift between the two friends. The fact that mutual 'friends' insisted on adding fuel to fire only added to the problems.

Band bajaa jaa

Farah Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shilpa Shetty
We know that Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is only a week old but we hear it's already shaking up the channel bigwigs.

According to our well-informed source, "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is not giving enough returns to the channel, if the feedback is anything to go by." But it's early days yet, we said. "Early days, yes. But considering the money that the judges demanded and got, they were expecting results from the word go."

So what's the moolah like? "Farah Khan got 60 lakh, Shilpa Shetty took home a cool 70 lakh hand Sanjay Leela Bhansali signed up for Rs 1 crore and 10 lakh!" Our source further added, "Contestant Ajay Jadeja wanted more than a lakh per episode and uski khwaish poori kar di gayi. And the budget of the show is 12 crore. Aaj ke date mein Sony ko itna recover karna mushkil hai." Mushkil but not namumkin, we say.
