Jassi goes on holiday

The final episode will take viewers into Mona Singh's residence

Subhash K Jha

With couch potatoes bidding farewell to Jassi Jaisi…Koi Nahin in the final episode this Thursday, they will also be given a peek into Mona 'Jassi' Singh's residence in Lokhandwala, Mumbai.

"It's such a beautiful send-off," says Mona as she prepares for her first vacation in three years. "In the last episode to be telecast on Thursday the real and reel Jassi will come together. My family from the soap will merge with my real family. We've shot in my home with my parents, my elder sister who has flown down from New Zealand to be with me and her son. So it's like one large joint family saying goodbye."

For Mona, the goodbye isn't quite what she had imagined it to be. "I thought I'd be doing cartwheels out of excitement when Jassi... got over. But on the last day I cried and cried," she says. "I was supposed to laugh in my last shot but I couldn't bring myself to do so. I was feeling sad to leave the serial behind. Jassi had become a part of my life. The characters were my family. I ceased to be Mona, I was Jassi for three years. So of course, there's bound to be a feeling of emptiness."

But the emptiness is accompanied with a feeling of relief. "I can finally take a holiday. In fact, I'm leaving for a 20-day holiday to Kerala with my family," says Mona. "I think I've earned this break. But I plan to return to television after the break. I can't give up what I've earned with such difficulty. Jassi... has given me everything. I've several offers. I will definitely take up a soap though I am not sure if I am ready for another daily. So even though I've a movie on hand I'll definitely do another serial. I see myself as a television actor first."

Mona isn't averse to a sequel to Jassi... either. "In fact, my directors for Jassi…Deeya and Tony Singh are in discussion with me right now for another serial. Let's see. I'm ready to take it on as long as it remains interesting. Serials should end before they begin to drag their feet," she says.

Jassi team cancels party; mourns Mahajan

Three years ago, a cult show was born - Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin is bidding adieu on 4 May and the makers wanted to say farewell in style, but destiny had a different script for them! Tony and Deeya Singh had plans to throw a farewell party for their team and also watch the last episode together of the show together on 4 May.

Jassi and Arman will now move on to other shows

But the party was cancelled in the last minute, when the news of Pramod Mahajan's demise hit the country on 3 May.

The party was to be held at Some Place Else (in Fun Republic) in suburban Mumbai along with the entire cast and crew.

"We cancelled the party as it's not the right day for a party; the media will not get to cover it besides it will be in the channel's bad taste. The entire cast wanted to watch the episode together and party as they had been working for three years. We will plan the get together tomorrow and will probably have it in a week's time," says producer Tony Singh who is planning to co-ordinate the actors once again for the pending farewell party.
The one hour special episode of Jassi…will end with Jassi (Mona Singh) taking the viewers through the episode talking casually with the entire cast of the show.

have a fetish for handbags: Rakshanda

Actor Rakshanda Khan gets candid about her likes and dislikes.

Indulgence: Handbags - "you can say they're a fetish for me."
From: All over the world. "I don't really care where I get my bags from - some of them are from Mumbai, some from Dubai or London or New York. And some are just designer bags."
How many: "About 50 or 60, but unfortunately I end up using just one or two a year. It's a pain to keep transferring the infinite things I stuff in my bag into a different one everyday…though the one I'm using now is ready to fall to pieces!"
Why: "I don't know - it's just an inexplicable predilection, I guess!"
Brands favoured: She has a few bags from Aldo, but she's not really a believer in the superiority of brands. "I've picked up a lot of rasta stuff that has lasted just as long as the branded bags."
Stores: Besides 'In Touch' in Lokhandwala, none other in particular. "I never walk into a store intending to buy a bag - but when I see an interesting one sitting on a rack, I just have to pick it up!"
Playing favourites: "At 'Nine West' in Chicago, I picked up a black leather handbag which can double as a haversack - I loved using haversacks at one point of time. Then there is a white furry Aldo bag with brown spots which looks like a little dog - my friends call it my 'pet'! And from London I bought a bag made from a pair of shorts - it's like I'm carrying a baby!"
Gifted or bought: A friend in Chicago once gave her this sleek black evening bag splattered with multi-coloured pictures of Betty Boo - "I just love cartoons!"
Special memories: "Farah Khan gifted me this interesting bag she got made at home - she and her tailor were tinkering about with a lot of material she had at home and they ended up making a really funky, ethnic bag with plenty of brocade work on it." Much later, such bags became the fad in London and Mumbai too

Gaurav has a naya look and a naya ghar!

Makeovers are in vogue! But Jassi's best pal has decided to turn bald to make a statement of sorts!

Gaurav Gera's brand new look!

"Well, I just went bald, and no reasons at all!" says Gaurav who played the nerdy Nandu in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. The actor further adds, "If you ask me why, I'll tell you why not????" We wonder if the reason behind his latest avatar is a new role he has been offered or anything on those lines, but the man just retorts, "No, it's nothing of that sort, it's completely a personal choice!"

This is not all. The actor is now busy with his new bachelor's pad. He is still putting the final touches to its interiors, but he allowed Tellychakkar.com a sneak preview into what he now calls home.

Mirror image

Gaurav is now in the mood to relax. After years of toiling on Jassi…, the man has taken a break from his on air show, The Great Indian Comedy Show.
He also has been a regular feature in Bollywood, the latest being Neal and Nikki. Lately, he was off to Canada, for another film!

Perhaps the best thing to happen to him after he went bald is that he bagged the offer of hosting the curtain raiser of the Filmfare awards!

Well, that's a start! Maybe soon we'll see him playing a villain on television…and with that look, offers must surely be pouring in!

Love bytes!

Marriages are made in heaven...and if there are celebs involved, this takes on a whole new meaning. Under constant media glare, their are things that the public wants to know about the marriage which otherwise would seem mundane. Here's a sneak peek into this week's star revealtions on Star One's Jodee Kamaal Ki.

Neelam and Ronit - trapped for life!

- Shilpa Saklani says that when the pandit says the wedding vows it is the best moment one can experience.

- Hiten fell in love at first sight when he saw Gauri while shooting the Breeze commercial five years back but love between the two blossomed only later when they did a serial together.

- Neelam realised she wanted to get married to Ronit Bose Roy much before he did. Every time he took her for candlelight dinners he could actually see it in her eyes. But he says it was a positive trap and he happily jumped into it.

- Apoorva has kept a very sweet nickname for Shilpa. He calls her 'Rasmalai'. This is because around 1 yr back when Rakshanda had kept Rozas, Shilpa supposedly bought Ras-malai and Paneer Tikka for Rakshanda at 6:00 in the morning. The Ras-Malai somehow managed to reach Apoorva. Apoorva said 'Ek teer se do nishaan'.

Gauri and Hiten - will it be pink or will it be blue?

- Shilpa does not like the fact that Apoorva is very finicky about discipline and punctuality. He insists on reaching the sets also 15 mins in advance. If Shilpa gets late in preparing his breakfast in three secs he just slams the door and walks away. So scared is Shilpa of this that now she has started preparing his breakfast in the night and keeping it ready in the ice box.

- Gauri wants their first child to be a girl whereas Hiten wants a baby boy.

- Gauri and Hiten fight as Gauri is a cleanliness freak and Hiten keeps spoiling the cupboard that she neatly arranges.

- Shilpa and Apoorva got married in Dehradun. Shilpa reached there one day before Apoorva. Apoorva had a stomach problem during his train journey and on reaching he just went upto Shilpa's mother and told her that he wanted to eat homemade Daal Chawal. He directly went to Shilpa's house where Shipa fed him the same.

Apoorva and Shilpa - nothing like dal chaawal

- In Bolo to Jaane everyone knew that Apoorva and Shilpa would sizzle on the stage but the surprise package were the other two who proved that they were tough competition.

- Hiten and Gauri got married in Gauri's hometown, Pune. They actually bribed the Pandit to finish the marriage in half an hour.

- On their honeymoon Gauri fell in the pool and broke her toe. Hiten actually called an ambulance to take her to the hospital.

Gaurav Gera goes taklu
By: Tusshar Joshi

Hair today, gone tomorrow:
Gaurav Gera
Pic: B L Soni

Famous for his crazy sense of humour, Gaurav Gera surprised himself, too, by going bald. The actor had wanted to do it for two years.

"I couldn't do it before, as I had to retain the continuity of my look. Now that Jassi is over, I decided to go ahead with it," he says.

However, Gaurav said he didn't plan his tonsuring in advance. "I just woke up one morning and decided to do it. I called my friend and asked him to do the deed; he was a bit shocked, but there was no escaping my demand."

Jassi yelled

How did 'good friend' Mona Singh react when she saw him? "I wanted her to be the second person, after my friend, to see my new look. I called her and said I wanted to meet her. When she saw me, she yelled that I was mad!"

Other friends had different reactions to Gaurav's new avatar. "One of them asked me if everything was all right with my family. Another checked on my health, while some asked if I had taken a mannat." The actor says he is enjoying the sensation of drops of water rolling down his bald head. "It's nice to feel cool water hitting your head in the summer."

Apart from his new look, the actor is also excited about his naya ghar. "I have been saving a lot, so my accountant told me it was okay if I spent my hard-earned moolah. I have kept minimum furniture and bought myself a
home theatre and satellite radio."

On the work front, Gaurav is reading scripts, and wants to take up anchoring. "I love anchoring. It is something that has always excited me. I have a project in the works, and if that happens, I will be anchoring a big show on TV," he says.

No stereotypes

A choosy actor, Gera is dead sure about what he wants to do. "I don't want to do daily dramas that cast me in stereotypical roles. I have done comedy and proved myself, so that will always be a genre close to my heart. Doing a negative role also excites me, and I'm open to anything that's a challenge."

For the time being, Gaurav plans to relax and pamper himself. "I am going to live it up. After working non-stop the last few years, this is something I deserve."

It'll be great to work with Apoorva again'

Currently on a break, actress Shilpa Saklani and her husband Apoorva Agnihotri have received an offer to play the romantic lead on TV

Shilpa Saklani and Apoorva Agnihotri

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Aafter shooting non-stop for over two years, the husband-wife duo Shilpa and Apoorva Agnihotri is making the most of their break. Ever since Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi wrapped up, Apoorva is in no mood to take up any more assignments that need him to follow a set schedule.

"Just imagine, he even refuses to do major work-outs as he'll have to follow a diet," says Shilpa. She admits that her husband is extremely media-shy. "It's not that he is unsociable but he prefers to be away from the spotlight. He doesn't want to be written about and I think people must respect that," says Shilpa.

After Jassi... Apoorva has been busy reading and watching soccer. "We're getting to spend more with each other and that's most exciting. Also, we get to read, cook and spend time with our moms," says Shilpa. It was also a period of leisure for Shilpa as she wasn't required to star in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi after the leap.

But it seems as if this time-out in togetherness is soon coming to an end. The buzz is that Shilpa and Apoorva have received an offer to play the romantic lead in a serial.

The actress is rather tight-lipped and says, "News in this industry travels fast. It's true, we've been offered to do a show together. We read the script and in all probability we'll be doing the show," she says. "It's a family drama. I can't divulge more details. I'm superstitious about such things. There's many a slip between the cup and the lip. Once things are finalised I'll talk extensively. Till then, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping the deal doesn't fall through. It will be great working with Apoorva again."

Apart from Nach Baliye, the two also worked together in Jassi... where Saklani had a guest appearance.

TRENDSETTER Mona Singh invites people to undergo makeovers

Jassi (Mona Singh) is one of the most memorable examples of plain Janes turning pretty women. She kick started the trend of makeovers and many other pivotal characters in other television soaps followed suit. But none made news like she did.

If Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin was inspired by the Spanish series Yo Soy Betty, la Fea (Betty, the Ugly One), Jassi (Mona Singh) herself will be part of another inspired show, Extreme Makeovers. Promos for this Indianised version of the hugely popular international show have been on air and Mona has been inviting people from different backgrounds to try out a makeover.

Not just cosmetic surgery

"We have started getting entries. After the selection, the makeover process will begin and the show will go on air by the end of the year," says Anupama, programming head of Sony Television. The concept, she says, differs from the international show. "Unlike the original show that emphasised on cosmetic surgery to enhance one's features, we are targeting those who were born with defects like cleft lip or have suffered disfiguration after an accident. This show is to help people who cannot afford expensive treatments. Obviously, their medical records will be checked," adds Anupama.

When the channel thought of an Indian version of Extreme Makeovers, Mona was the obvious choice for anchor. "Through her character Jassi, she has connected to middle class homes highlighting the problems faced by not-to-pretty women," says Anupama.

Says Mona Singh, "I agreed because it is not a frivolous show and really tries to help people. I will be shooting some portions with each of the participants. This is the only show that I have signed at the moment and in a way it connects with my portrayal of Jassi."

A team of doctors that includes plastic and cosmetic surgeons, dentists and others will meet the participants. "It's a time consuming exercise. Once the candidates have been finalised, we will be visiting their families to shoot the 'before' episodes. Once the patient recuperate for a couple of months post surgery, the 'after' episodes will be shot. When the show goes on air, you'll get to see both phases of their lives," explains Anupama. To avoid conflicts post surgery, doctors will also emphasise on participants keeping their expectations realistic.

Meanwhile, to avoid the show becoming too serious, simpler makeovers that make fashion statements will also be shown.

Mona: Nahin Baliye!

Mona Singh
Mona Singh aka Jassi will soon be seen participating in the reality dance show —Jhalak Dikhla Jaa.

Talking about her dual role as a participant, Mona says, "It's extremely hectic. Dancing and learning all the steps is quite challenging."

Even though she loves to hit the dance floor at clubs, Mona admits "My style of dancing is all about having fun, but I can't do those moves on Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. On the show, I have to get serious about dance and learn different genres like salsa, ball room dancing, and other forms."

It's different

Mona who is currently rehearsing for six hours a day, says she wants to put her best foot forward. "If I am in a contest, I might as well work hard to try and win the trophy. It's going to be difficult, but I also think it's great fun."

Singh doesn't want to compare her show to the super popular Nach Baliye, which will soon emerge in it's second season, "You can't compare the two shows. While Nach Baliye is all about drama and glamour, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa takes dance more seriously. They are totally different content wise."

Interestingly, Mona admits that she was approached to participate in Nach Baliye with a friend, "I couldn't do it as I have a contract with Sony."

Mona gets 'real'

Mona will host a reality show Extreme Makeover — for Sony, which will go on air in the coming months. The show offers plastic surgery to people with disfigured faces and bodies.

Says Mona, "The show is all about changing lives. We have people whose faces are smashed in accidents and acid attack victims with disfigured features, who have been transformed with astonishing results." Singh adds the show gets her very emotional, "I can't control the tears. It's really moves me. We have a different set of doctors who cater to every need of the participants."

Now, dancing with our stars

August 24, 2006

The war between the Star and Sony Hindi channels has been on forever, be it through soap operas or reality shows. In the latest twist, both of them have announced 'new' dance competitions with celebrity participants. After Nach Baliye's success last year, it was natural that Star would have a sequel up its sleeve. What was unexpected was Sony's answer to Star -- Jhalak Dikhla Jaa: Dancing with the Stars.
Produced by Synergy Communications (makers of Kaun Banega Crorepati) and Theatre Red, Jhalak's format is owned by BBC and has been a huge success across 27 countries. Jhalak... will invite viewers to vote for their favourite contestant jodi, with a 50:50 importance given to audience and judge votes. The pair with the lowest score will be eliminated each week. Voting lines will be open for five days, starting with the day of the performance.

The show wil be launched on September 7, 2006. It is a unique reality-based dance format show that brings together celebrities from different walks of life. They will team up with a professional dancer to perform on a highly competitive stage. The panel of judges includes filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan and actress Shilpa Shetty. Star couple Archana Puran Singh and Parmeet Sethi will anchor the show. Shilpa was initially hesitant bus said, "my passion and love for dancing made me say 'Yes!'"

The show will be telecast every Wednesday and Thursday at 10 pm. Here's a Jhalak of the star pairs:

Mona Singh & Toby

Mona Singh became a TV icon playing the lovable ugly-duckling Jassi in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. After bagging the Best actress award at the Indian Telly Awards, 2005. She is bracing up now for her Bollywood debut later this year. In this dance contest, she has been paired up with Toby, a handsome and young choreographer who teaches salsa, jazz and contemporary dance forms. A self-trained dancer, Toby has choreographed shows for singers Suneeta Rao, Mehnaz, Shaan, Leslie Lewis and Anu Malik.

"I have never participated in any dance contest in the past," exclaims Mona. "All I did was the usual Balle balle at school and college! So I am very excited about this new show. Toby is a very hard taskmaster and we are practising very hard almost four-five hours a day. Trust me, that is not easy. I have complete faith in Toby."

The hard taskmaster, on the other hand, is all praise for Mona. "She is practising very hard and is extremely focussed. There are times when she is dripping with sweat all over -- since we turn off the airconditioner while rehearsing -- but she never complains and continues to dance non-stop."
