Rakshanda stops by

GREY IS GOOD Rakshanda Khan

Rakshanda Khan joins the gang of up and coming celebrities taking time out from their increasingly hectic schedule to plug a cold drink, a dietician, a sari shop. Rakshanda of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin fame came down to Ghaziabad's Shoppers' Stop at Shipra Mall to inaugurate the showroom.

"It is a privilege to join Shoppers' Stop," says Rakshanda. "I have worn some of the clothes available at Shoppers' Stop in my show Ab Aayega Mazaa on Zee TV and was so fond of them that I bought them for myself. I hope all of you have a good time shopping at Shoppers' Stop."

Rakhshanda, attired in a black outfit for the inauguration, is so happy about spacious Delhi that she jokingly said, "I am searching for my life partner from this city to have an opportunity to settle here."

Popular on the small screen, she says, "By the grace of God, I have no scarcity of admirers and I feel better working with the small screen, although I have offers from the film industry. I have no plans to go to Bollywood."

Answering queries of doing only negative roles in serials she says, "It is not related to anything. It is just the demand of the story and I think it is complementary to the positive role."

Rakhshanda believes success has come to her on her own terms. "Whatever I stand for today is due to my own efforts," she claims.

Sir aankhon par
By: Dinesh Raheja
April 24, 2005

When I told a collegian that I was going to meet Apoorva Agnihotri, she suddenly came alive and shot back, "How cool is that! Give my love to Armaan Sir." That's what he is known as after the popular television show, Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin.

The conventionally good-looking Armaan's attraction for plain Jane Jassi (he hasn't recognised her in her svelte new avatar) has filled up several episodes and fired up much debate.

In real life, Armaan alias Apoorva, is married to pretty Shilpa Saklani.

Sunday Mid Day talks to Apoorva Agnihotri about The Male Gaze in a bid to find out how diametrically different are his views on women vis a vis his alter ego, Armaan Sir.

They say men don't make passes at girls who wear spectacles. In Jassi's case, it is spectacles as well as braces. Do you agree that men give a lot of importance to physical beauty?
That's the hard truth. But it's true not only of men but also of women. If women claim that they give more importance to a man's heart than to his looks from the very onset, it's not true. It all begins with getting attracted to a face; qualities like a sense of humour, et al, follow thereafter.

Incidentally when I was in college, I did find a bespectacled girl attractive. But I didn't make a pass at her. That's not me. Also, I would like to add that physical attraction can't sustain a long-term relationship like marriage — you have to start relating to the 'person' in a man or woman.

What did you discover about your wife, a TV actor in her own right, after you were attracted to her?
There were no rude surprises. She was more or less as I had envisioned she would be. She is simple and real, there isn't a trace of superficiality in her.

Why did you resort to an arranged marriage in this day and age?
I think I would call it love-cum-arranged. After pack up one day, a common friend, Rakshanda, organised a meeting with her over coffee at a Barista outlet. She was very cool, very normal. I didn't go out of my way to impress her either. I think at times guys try too hard and it backfires. It works at times and doesn't, at others.

Have you been in a relationship before?
Yes. But I have never been casual about my relationship.

You think all men fall in love more than once in their lifetime?
From the age of 14 to the last day of your life, you keep falling in love. But once you have decided to marry, you have to be committed to the girl for the rest of your life. My father, a film writer, was my role model. He was an absolute family man even though he stayed in Mumbai, away from us, for most part of his life.

What is the most blatant pass a woman has made at you?
At Enigma, a girl passing by pinched my butt.

Can you understand Armaan's soft corner for Jassi?
Yes. Armaan is an unpredictable man.

Do you ever ask the director about Armaan's motivation for wooing Jassi?
I do quite often, but in television, you create situations to extend the serial. There isn't much room for logic and motivation.

Jassi began as a confident woman but now she is dependent on Nina Gupta's character to show her the way. Can't women ever be self-reliant?
Of course they can, but then there is always a difference between real life and a make-believe woman.

Does your male ego hurt at the thought that Jassi is named after the female protagonist and not you?
I am very happy it's called Jassi (laughs) because I have to shoot only for 20 to 22 days; Jassi shoots for 30 days a month!

What is your rapport with Mona Singh, aka Jassi?
She is a very sweet person.

What do you expect from your wife besides companionship and love?
What do I need her for? (striking a pensive pose). I think this is a tough one because needs keep changing with time. I think… I know she will be there for me if and when I am down and out.

You and Shilpa are a DINK (Double Income No Kids) couple. Eventually, when you start a family, who will take the back seat?
I think she will. And she can always come back after two to three years. Look, she's not a very ambitious person, nor am I. If she was ambitious, we would have had our share of problems.

What do you think of the way women are projected on TV?
I think they cry a lot. They look so suppressed. Women in real life, in sharp contrast to the women on TV, are far more in control of their lives.

Does your mom expect your wife to be like the character Ganga she plays in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi?
No. Not at all.

Women are not the only vain species. I can see that you have got your hair restyled.
I have done an extension, a treatment for the hair that increases its volume. I think it's important to feel good about yourself because what's within reflects externally.

At what age did you become aware that you are different from a girl?
When I was probably 10 or 11.

And who answered your questions, if any?
My father would talk to me, man to man. It was very embarrassing.

Who had a greater influence on your life — your dad or mom?
My mom. I am 70 percent like my mom and 30 percent like my dad.

Tell me, has your fan following been affected by your marriage?
I think girls either like you or they don't. Being married doesn't impinge on your popularity; cheating on your wife does. If Hrithik Roshan cheats on his wife, it would impact his career.

It would hold true for me too. A lot of women like Shah Rukh Khan because he loves his wife and kids. They love him much more than someone who is single and is a Casanova.

Are men subjected to the casting couch too?
Yes. But I haven't had to confront it.

Can you understand the psyche of a person who misuses power?
Essentially, people in power can't digest it. My father often told me that it drives people mad.

Would you ever raise a hand on a woman?
Never.

Has any woman provoked you?
10,000 times (laughs). But I would never raise my hand on her, unless I am required to do so for the camera.

Would you use such an acting opportunity as a catharsis? For instance, did you find a release for your pent up anger in the scene where you manhandle Mahima in Pardes?
No. At that point of time, I wasn't anxious or angry (half smiles).

Mixed Doubles -- are you game?

Heard of the swingers club? Well, we have, but only in hushed tones! But perhaps our society has come of age today with films like Mixed Doubles, which explore the sensitive issue of swapping partners among couples! We asked some television actors what they felt about this urban phenomena....some shrugged, some hesitated and others just chose not to comment. Here are some of them who were game enough to tell us what they felt!

Riya V Anandwala explores.

Maninee De

Maninee De: It very much exists in India. India is totally open to this concept. I am not talking in terms of Mumbai, but it also in cities like Chandigarh! And also in places where we think it can never happen! Personally, I don't subscribe to it, because I simply don't believe in the concept. I feel marriage is sacred and it should not be affected by such things. Marriage can be sustained by hardwork. This is not at all a practical solution. The couple has to learn things together and help their relationship. They can do some hobbies together and also have outings to break the monotony, if it exists. Scientifically after 18 months the attraction between a man and woman terminates, what lasts is trust and friendship. It is all about perception. And this is just not my way!

Nausheen Ali Sardar

Nausheen Ali Sardar: Yes, it exists! And I think people who do something of this kind are mentally insane to do it. It's equivalent to opting for a prostitute. I will never ever subscribe to this concept. Even if boredom steps into a marriage, something should be done to revive the excitement. Couples can opt for outings, can go clubbing together and yes, if need be can also see a marriage counsellor. One has to find a companion in his or her spouse so that it can be fruitful for the future.

Manish Goyal

Manish Goyal: Well, it is a very larger than life concept, so even if it exists in real life, people are hiding it. It is behind the doors. And it will take a lot of time for people to open up. It can be counted as one of the solutions but, I will not adapt it. There are many other things to do deny boredom entry into a relationship! Your spouse has to be your companion.

Nigaar Khan

Nigaar Z Khan: Yes, this concept of swinging couples does exist! I feel that sex is a very special time spent between a couple and it is more of an emotional bonding. I have never seen sex as entertainment. I will never subscribe to a concept like that. If marriage gets monotonous, the best solution for it is communication. The couple should solutions by talking to each and communicating the problems.

Sharad Kelkar

Sharad Kelkar: I am definitely aware of this concept, but it doesn't exist in our country. Will I subscribe to it? What rubbish! (Laughs) In my point of view this is no solution for saving a marriage. There are many couples, groups in society who do adapt to this concept, but for me it's a total no no. One has to be innovative with his wife every time. You cannot go on with the same routine over and over again. They can go out partying, watch movies and even can bring out innovation in having sex.

Pari to get a makeover!

The adorable and by turns obnoxious Pari is coming back to Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin from Wednesday.

The idea is obviously to bring back all those who made Jassi.... the endearing serial it was in the heady days when Jassi was the plain Jane with the heart of gold, even as the show nears its finale within a couple of months.

But Pari will no longer sport the flamboyant dressess she did in her earlier version. Her look, we are told, will be a classier, denim clad one. And her track? We ain't letting on more for now.

Maninee De, who's back at the Jassi... shoot from Monday for bring Pari back to life, is both nervous and excited about her fresh innings. "Wait and watch!," she giggles. That we will, Maninee, that we will.

"I am a voracious reader"

Out with his new album, Karan Oberoi is on cloud nine! Last seen in Sony's Jassi Jaisi koi Nahin, Karan has been traveling all around the country to promote his new album along with his band. He is an avid reader and cannot do without book by his side. He talks to Riya V Anandwala about his collection.

"I have lost counting of my books"

Which book are you reading right now?
I am reading this book called,The Beloved by Osho. I have just started reading this book and I am just in its second page, so can't tell you anything about it.

Which book did you explore prior to this one?
Well, I read this book called The Monk who sold the Ferrari written by an Indian author Robbin Sharma. It gives advice about living our life in a definite way. It also talks about spirituality.

Is there any particular reason for you being so involved with books?
There is no reason as such, I have been reading since I was a child. Other than my inherent interest, it was always encouraged at home! Apart from the learning and knowledge aspect, a book is a man's best companion, mostly while traveling.

"I love reading everything!"

What sorts of books do you like to read?
I am a voracious reader, I love reading everything. From Archie's to encyclopedia, from fiction to non-fiction, every damn thing!

Which book is closest to your heart?
I like reading whatever interests me and have a varied taste. So there is no book as such, but I do like non-fiction and also readers digest, as I feel that it is a compilation of amazing facts. Basically as I said earlier I enjoy everything.

Tell us something about your collection
Well, I can't even think of counting my books. They are so many that I'll loose my counting. I have this huge cupboard which is full of books. And yes, I have innumerable encyclopedia's, which I love reading.

Mona jaisi koi nahin!

A touching story made its way to us a couple of days back and since, it concerned our own Mona Singh, we decided to share the info with all her fans!

When the lady was appearing for her Bcom exams, she was suffering from severe back ache. The pain was so excruciating that she was contemplating using a wheelchair and use a writer to write her exams!

But there was something that inspired the actor to overcome her physical pain and take the exams on her own! Her father, Jasvir Singh was in the Army, and due to a wound in his leg, Mr Singh is unable to use one of his feet. But despite this, he never complained or cribbed about his pain! And taking inspiration from her darling dad, Mona too rose against all odds and not only appeared for her exams, but managed a first class as well!

Way to go, Jassi!

Apoorva's post-Jassi plans
By: Tushar Joshi
March 9, 2006

Apoorva Agnihotri
Apoorva Agnihotri is one of the most reclusive actors in the industry.

"I don't hate interviews, it's just that after shooting, I like to go home and relax," he says. With his role as Armaan Suri is wrapping up in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, we cornered him for a chat

Jassi is ending. What are your plan now?
I am planning to go on a much-deserved break. My sister stays in Canada, so I will mostly go visit her. As far as work is concerned, I am open to everything — a film, a play, television, anything exciting.

When someone approaches me with a project, I ask for the script, as I have figured that without a good script and director, nothing will work. Also, I don't want to jump into films in a hurry. I am a true Sagittarian and don't like to have my life planned.

What's your reaction to the ups and downs of Jassi?
Wherever I have gone, people have either hated me or loved me. I think the fact that they have an opinion on me is a validation of Jassi's success. I respect the audience reaction to various phases of the show and I think it's important that the show ends on a high.

For me, it's the right time to say goodbye to Jassi. I find myself extremely lucky to get a chance to play Armaan, and the cult status the show received was unbelievable.

Your favourite moment last year?
It would have to be being part of Nach Baliye. The whole experience was the best, even though both of us had to go to our respective shoots and rehearse for long hours. I was nervous like hell, and it was scary performing in front of the whole country.

Any friends in industry?
Parmeet Sethi is my guru. He's not only my inspiration, but also my best friend in the industry. I really look up to him and admire him as an actor. I don't have too many friends, and prefer hanging out with people I know. Mona and Rakshanda are also close to me. In fact, Rakshanda played cupid and got Shilpa and me together, so she's quite special.

Weight and watch

Fat is not fine... at least that's what television stars seem to think. Reena Thapar Kapoor spoke to six actresses who are in the process of shedding those pounds

Mona Singh

Poonam Narula, Sudha Chandran, Anita Hassanandani

Delnaz Paul, Riva Bubber

Mona Singh
I have a typical North Indian built. But I know where I'm heavy and make it a point to conceal those parts with dark colours and loose clothes. I've put on a lot of weight during Jassi… But since I wasn't required to show off my curves, I took it easy and ended up putting on 12 kgs! But now, Jassi... is nearing completion and I've to start work on my debut film. So I've no choice but to lose weight. I haven't started working out, but I am on a strict diet of boiled or raw vegetables and whole fruits. My nutrionist tells me that I've lost three inches and that's just the beginning.

Poonam Narula
I had put on 25 kgs after I delivered. The post-pregnancy weight refused to go and I looked like a huge balloon. Thankfully during Nach Baliye I managed to lose eight kgs. But that's where it stopped. I also have a sweet tooth. But, now I've decided that I want look different and gear up for a new innings. There are ten more kgs that I need to chuck out of my body. I've already started working out.

Sudha Chandran
I was never bothered about my weight. I became conscious of it after the growing popularity of Ramola Sickand (in Kahin Kisi Roz). Since I was wearing noodle-strap blouses and glamorous saris, I had no option but to shed the fat that I had piled on for years. To look trim, I lived on boiled veggies and fruits for months and lost about 10 kgs.

Anita Hassanandani
I looked more than my age in my first television show Kabhi Sautan Kabhi Saheli. Back then I didn't know that I would have a career in films and television. When Ekta offered me a Hindi film (Kuch To Hai), I decided to knock off those extra pounds. Earlier I would eat anything. But now I am more careful. I had to work out like a maniac to get back into shape. After all, I was getting ready for my big break! After losing six-odd kgs, I continue to be paranoid about my weight.

Delnaz Paul
I have become synonymous with the 'roly poly' tag. All my life I've been comfortable with my weight as I knew that I could carry it off well. But I've now made up my mind to lose some of it. Through rigorous dance rehearsals I did lose some weight during Nach Baliye. I've started brisk walking and I also do half an hour of yoga every day. Above all, I've enrolled myself in Shiamak Davar's Institute for the Performing Arts. Hopefully that should help me look slim and trim some day.

Riva Bubber
I was never obese but was definitely broad around my hips. In Neena Gupta's Kyun Hota Hai Pyar, people said that I looked good and acted well but I was criticised for being overweight. After I got Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, I started watching my weight by eating right and working out as often as I could. In a few months, from 60 kgs I came down to 53 kgs. I thought it was a huge achievement.

Maninee De bedridden due to leg injury
By: Tushar Joshi
March 10, 2006

Maninee De
After Tassnim Sheikh, now it's Maninee De who's suffered an accident.

The actress was shooting for Zee's Sarrkkar on Tuesday afternoon, when she slipped from the stairs and hurt her right ankle. "I was walking down the stairs, and suddenly, I slipped. I was taken to a doctor and my leg is in a cast," said De.

Mihir's with her

Maninee's husband Mihir Misra has been with her since the injury happened.

"It happened during the lunch break. She was supposed to climb down the stairs, and accidentally missed two and slipped. However, the injury got worse because she turned 360 degrees and came sliding down. In the process she tore the ligaments of her right ankle and has been advised 15 days of bed rest."

When asked how she was doing, he said, "She's sleeping now and resting. Hopefully, the doctors can have another look at her ankle in a couple of days." De was recently in the news for being back in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. "I don't think she should join work without a complete recovery. She has been advised not to put any strain on her leg," said her concerned husband.

Coinciding leave

Mihir added that it was a crazy coincidence that he recently got four days of leave. "Fortunately, I can be with her, as I am not shooting. It looks like my holiday had to somehow happen just during her accident. She's like a child when she's hurt, so I am going to make sure she feels at ease."

Shilpa to do a cameo in Jassi....

Now get ready to watch Shilpa Saklani acting in the same show as hubby Appu...

Shilpa Saklani will do a cameo shortly in Sony's prime time show Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. And this is also the first time that the couple will be seen in the same frame in a TV show, barring of course, Nach Baliye, where the cute couple strutted their stuff and danced to the tunes of their choreographers.

Shilpa's sudden entry into the show owes its origin to the fall that Maninee Misra suffered on the sets of Zee's Sarrkkar on Tuesday. With Maninee's foot in a cast, it is unlikely that the actor will be available for shooting. Maninee has just returned as Pari into the Jassi... track. Her unavailability has made a parallel track obligatory, and that's where Shilpa will fit in, we hear.

Shilpa is currently doing Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Shanno Ki Shaadi on Star Plus. We are yet to get the details of Shilpa's track in Jassi..., but watch this space for details.
