True that! And thank god the audience changing depends on any other things beyond the realms of TV! That gives us a window of hope.

SP uses the soch nayi tagline as a marketing tool, nothing more. its does not even try to evoke any social change, so i am not surprised that they would actually continue their regressive shows despite the new marketing slogan.

Yash Raj Films used to make really good shows with a measure of reality and no judgment on modern women. Rishta.com, Powder, Mahi Way were a few such shows. But none of them garnered TRPs.

I don't think SP will ever change unless viewers demand different types of shows. India, for that matter most of South Asia (Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal etc) is going through a sort of cultural renaissance. People have more disposable incomes, women have to venture out to job force to support their families, a growing crop of middle class that is mass consumer and a demand for entertainment that is not limited to TV. The channels will have to fight harder to keep their eyeballs and the only way they can do it is to attract more middle class viewers to watch the shows, and appeal to them with right content.

Modernism, feminism etc are not central credo for middle class right now, therefore, not a credo for GEC channels (Colors, SP, Zee etc). It will be when the middle class figures out that they have choices and develops a need to watch modernism and feminism, the content of popular media will change.

Competition is a great leveler. If middle class starts switching channels to modern shows, SP will change in a hurry.

Butting in to just say YRF's shows were amazing. Progressive, suitable for all audiences and so very good. Few of the best shows I have seen. Even my Dad who was..is allergic to Indian tv watched them with the addiction wonly seen in Barun fangirls.

Okay mini butt-in over.

could be totally irrelevant, but what of guilty pleasure? even when the show was going good, many of us-- smart, educated, intelligent women/men, knew the show was based on a fallacy, an illusion of a desi Mills and Boon. Yet we continued to stick with it, watching it dickoding it and what not!

So, i'd say guilty pleasure; secretive or open also plays a big role. We watch it, talk about it, SP takes note of it and shows it!

Does nayi soch come anywhere?

I liked Lavanya bcz she was a strong and independent woman... I don't mind a heroine being traditional but if u preach that only traditional is the best way a girl can be then I am sorry I don't agree... SP's slogan of rishta wahi soch nayi is purely bullshit bcz although I don't watch all their shows but the little tid bits I managed to came across r the usual crap where a Bahu is killing herself to be accepted by the in laws and if she shows a little bit of independence then she is evil personified... Why beat around the bush when in reality Arnav never got interested in Khushi bcz of her traditional values but for pure physical attraction... He was proper lusting after her in the red sari from where it all started and it happens but that doesn't mean there was something wrong with Lavanya and that she needed to change anything abt herself but it was made out like that if she changes her whole persona then she will become irresistable to Arnav but sadly that was not the case... Arnav's physical attraction towards Khushi was much stronger than it was towards Lavanya and that's why he broke up with her and that was the right thing to do.

good one. Guilty pleasure had a generation of mommies lapping 50 shades of grey on to NYT bestseller 10 weeks in a row. So yes, there is something to be said of that. But guilty indulgences should give us pleasure no? Watching Lavanya's decimation was not pleasurable, guilty maybe. I remember 4Lions had debated on making La a typical vamp and I was one of those who cried foul. Its so easy to paint a character into a corner yet much harder to deliver a nuanced narrative.

Another question, is the average viewer in India capable of nuances that come with the depiction of women and modernity? The culture is currently under a threat of influences be it western or egalitarian. The fanatics would bat to push back on those influences (eg. banning valentines day card or celebrations). Many are fence sitters, unsure of which side they want to be on. Female freedom appeals to them as long their freedoms are guaranteed but their daughters-in-law's freedom is subject to their commands. Women want to dress in jeans, shorts but dont know how or dont have the confidence or positive body image to do so.
The biggest fallacy is thinking that feminism is about wearing jeans, t-shirts, speaking impeccable english, drinking freely, smoking and moving in high societies with sexual freedom. Those are great if that is what you want to do but without peer pressure or need to fit in.

To me feminism and by extension modernism has a simple definition. The right to make your choices without fear of retribution, and without malice towards others.

Nayi Soch? Where is it, how is it? Shows like Udaan and Saans were the ones that truly propogated Nayi Soch. And those shows appeared in early 90s. What we see now is nothing but a mish mash of plot and story lines to show te ideal Indian women as being highly virtuos, where in domesticity is worshiped whereas anyone who is progressive is shown as being immoral.

The gap between reality and what is being portrayed in SP shows couldn't have been any wider.

Munches...long long long time...and a post it is...
troll or not to ...welll...lets start with the topic...
sp's defifntion of Nayi soch...i may be wrong but they have not actually defined what that might look like for them...
now to lavanya...
Lav kashyap...represented to me a very bitchy woman with fine legs who shacked up the boss ...and picked on the funny looking girl...for her attire ...and was a bully of sorts...
Arnavs and Lav's relationship to me was purely sexual. nothing more so i would not call it living together rather a very physcal need adressed...there did not seem to be any respect for her from him...and she seemed fine with it...
then she fell in love with him...and wanted more and dicided that to get that more she was going to morph herself...even sbject herself to khushi who she did not respect and finally found a friend in a funny place...
So for Lavanya I think the bonus was not ending up with a man who did not give a toss for her...who she did not settle with trampling on her sense of self and making a good friend in Khushi...
her stereotypes somhow being broken...
bet the two yes i find khushi prettier...and Lavanya sexier...
and the difference is not in the chamkili outfits...
The socila hang ups shown in the show were real..and it would have been nice if they had broken a few and not bought into them...
In short i dont think this industry is ready to show real relationships between a cpl (hetrosexual for now)...weather married modern traditional...living together, friends ...they dont seem mature enough to show anything in its entirety the physical or the emotional...
till they stick to cliches ...whether in dipiction or storytelling the lofty ideals that we seem to want in the name of nayi soch are not going to see the light of day...
