This is a series in which I will discuss the show character by character. Enjoy and please share your thoughts because in a forum riddled with frustration posts and gagging gushy posts I think this one was sorely needed.

Also I just wanted to discuss feminism! bwahahaah

The channel claims, "Rishta Vohi, Soch Nai," inviting women from the younger as well as more educated strata to watch their shows because they will not be disappointed. It talks about strong women who take on the man's world and change it with their immaculate upbringing in the old ways, deeply rooted in culture and morals.

What this suggests is that evil only begins to sprout when we lose our way or grow distant from our culture and roots. Also if you are "modern" in any way it means you have no morals, and you stand for nothing really, and are as shallow as Arnav's pool.

Exhibit A: Lavanya Kashyap

A girl in her mid-twenties, living alone in an apartment which Arnav frequents for conjugal visits (or so we were lead to believe), she is well educated, has a high paying job, eats nothing but pasta (because that's what happens to rich people when they lose their way, they develop a disgusting taste for phus phus pusta), for all her independence and the fact that she grew up in England she can't cook to save her life, she doesn't want to get married nor does she want children.

She is a vamp, an air head who is nasty as long as she holds on to her modern ways. But when she genuinely tries to change and becomes Khushi's clone she becomes this really nice person not because she was always like that just forgot it in the rat race of the corporate world but because Khushi waved her magic wand and CHANGED her completely. Moral of the story, only hen you go back to your morals and culture will you ever be a good person, because that concept of good will towards man is alien to modern day atheists.

Munchy's Note: Marriage is not sacred; they break and sometimes become horrible relationships which slowly kill you but society will not hear of you breaking that sacred vow, you're in it for life. And live in relationships are not no strings attached one night stands; they are emotionally committed and when they break it hurts just as much as a divorce. So please do not make one better than the other because it was sanctioned by the gods so it MUST be better and don't belittle the other as a life of sin, because it is more than just sex outside of marriage. The only difference between the two is one is legally binding.

If couples don't want children it is not the end of the world. If modern day women don't ask you in a public gathering whether your husband goes down on you, and how it is so sad that you have never orgasmed and only do the missionary then you have no right to ask them why they aren't having any children and how they are somehow less human and not really completely women at all for choosing that path. It is a personal choice and none of your business.

Also I was recently told Lavanya didn't hold a candle to Khushi in beauty. It depends on your standards for beauty (tall, skinny, WHITE. Typical and whitewashed because your own skin will never be good enough). That's just sad on so many levels and extremely anti-feminist for a channel that promotes new thinking as well as a show that promotes Indian culture, and frankly not all Indian's are milk white and I think Lavanya should be applauded for thinking she's the bees knees with her super sexy tan skin that Caucasian women bake themselves in the sun for.

Overall her character had major depth, a level of understanding with the anti-hero that the protagonist still doesn't seem to display. Maybe it's because they came from the same world, maybe it's because the sex was awesome. Who knows. But she was one of the few characters I was really fond of. However she took a step back in feminism by changing herself for a man who treated her like shit, sending out a dual message, that the woman must always change for the man, and that the man would never fall for a woman who put out for him before marriage and would prefer the virgin bride because he respects her more further preaching that women are not expected to have high libidos, if they do it means they will wander and cheat while the dutiful virgin wife will never cheat because she doesn't have a taste or hankering for sex anyway.

You are free to tear this apart and troll, but I will not respond to the trolls. This is meant for a healthy discussion so please only respond if you know what feminism truly is. This will not be allowed to turn in to an ugly fight. Disagreements are welcome, ayivain comments for the sake of it are not.

Thought provoking post and certainly not everyone's cup of tea. But I loved reading it and I am looking forward to the reading the series.

The character did have a lot of depth, though initially she was made to look shallow. Lavanya was the first person to really understand what ASR wanted and needed. She also understood Khushi really well and what knew exactly what she had to do.

My point is why do we forget this is just fiction... If I look at reality it's not like guys like Arnav do not exist... But 98% of the time they will choose partners like lavanya..
At least I have always seen dynamic guys choose dynamic partners...
We will always see double income professional families..
What is the story..then... If the makers had shown a romance between 2 likes..they could have done a great job if they had a plot like that...
But they had a canvas like starplus where they had to target audiences who sit at home and watch tv at 8 pm in the weekdays...that w as their target audience..
So they went down at their target audience and showed them a dream man who is brought to knees by a simple woman... Who is morally right according to them..the target audience they certainly did not anticipate that smart technologically savvy women would browse the net and watch the episode and give critiques and headaches..to them..
It was easier for the cvs to show attraction between 2 opposites because again it's a soap... If it was between 2 likes .. The issues could have got over..in say 3 hours...a movie..
My point is not what women is wrong and which women is right... It is easier and simpler to show attraction between 2 opposites..

I like this topic ...

One of the things that always irks me about the way these shows portray modern women. If you are modern and independent you are naturally assumed to be loose and immoral.

And i refuse to believe anything other than the fact that Arnav and Lavanya had a sexual relationship.. why else would he want her to live with him for gods sake? and just coz they were not married does not mean they were not emotionally involved and the breakup scene was evident of that. You are right she showed a depth of understanding that i have not seen anyone show not even his sister.

One of the things that really impressed me about Lavanya was the way she handled when she realized Arnav was in love with Khushi. Now this was a modern girl's way of handling this and it was not coz she was transformed by Khushi. She was classy and mature about it. Did it not hurt ? All her dreams everything was shattered but she handled it on her own and walked out with her head held high. Yes she should have done it long before coz he treated her like shit and i hated him for that. But what surprised me even then was no one thought that was wrong the way he was treating her coz she is the lose woman. But if it was the sansakri virgin then its all different.

They need to get out of this stereotypical way of depicting modern women.

And as for the uncouth way society behaves towards couples who are different i wish people would have the guts to ask them the questions you put forward no one dares to bare your dirty deeds in public but no one thinks twice about asking a single woman loudly as ever why is he not married or a young woman why she does not have children repeatedly. And don't get me even started on the fair skin debate.

I can draw some parallels to the movie 'Cocktail' with Veronica.
Imitiaz Ali the producer of the film when asked about the elephant in the room.
Does he believe Meera is better than Veronica?
He couldn't coherently form an answer.
There you go. Indian cinema. Long long way to go.

Exactly. Why must she always be depicted as what's wrong with the world. Also the underlying message of how marriage and a man is all a woman wants at the end of the day. That no woman could ever not want marriage, it is always the man who needs to be convinced of it because women will always always want that in their hearts of hearts.

i agree with each n every word u said...yes lavanya kashyap was a woman of pure strong mettle which sadly the leads n the parallel leads have not yet mastered in this one n half years...the show promotes cliches n somehow SP believes in the fact that women are epitome of divine goodness n moral sanctity n the so called traditional homes r the upholders of 'goodness' n are placed as moral popes in the judgement of good n evil!
in this world there is no grey...its either black or white!
my question...what is wrong in being an atheist?its a matter of choice n not an issue of right n wrong!
u call a salwar kameez clad white skinned girl, unaware, unassuming.too embarrassingly naive n unknowing about the ways of the world plain engrossed in chanting devi maiyya without having any practical sense an IDEAL PROSPECTIVE SANSKAARI BAHU...i call it plain foolishness n stupidity!
i dont wear salwaar,i dont pray in temples,i dont speak pure unadulterated mother-tongue,i believe in giving an eye for an eye,im liberal in my views about relationships n live ins,im not naive,i roam around with guys,i have had my share of boyfriends n intimacy,im quite skeptical about the hindu traditions of saath pheras n kanyadaans n i have my reasons 4 dat...does that make me a characterless wh**e or a person in the category of not-fit-to-be-a-bride but fit 4 parties n glamorous events as arm candy?
why should a woman be bounded by these imaginary shackles the so called traditions as they r called to be ideal bahus?
im very happy with my skin colour or my choice of clothes or education, thank u!
im not ashamed of who i am n neither do i feel the need to mould myself in order to suit other peoples restricted views!same goes for lavanya...arnav never gave a bloody shit 4 her n she was made to change herself to suit his familys choices!
why was la characterized as an obnoxious rich arrogant vamp initially?is it bcoz she was brought up in london ,she wears dresses instead of the TRADITIONAL midriff, cleavage n back bearing cholis held up by just 2 strings or is it bcoz she is career oriented n prefers a job over making sweets n parathas in the kitchen wearing designer sarees?
so according to SP...all of us r vamps n arrogant bitches...the only hope left 4 us is getting trained on how to celebrate janmashtami n make diyas n learn how to make jalebis n kheers, never mention anything on f**king n getting f**ked in suhagraats, worship ur husband like god even if he is a scum n NEVER claim for a career or have any male friends coz if ur seen with them,u will be called a prostitute!
lesson learnt,SP!
rishta vahi,soch nayi!!!
INDEED!!!!!
