Fear
She reluctantly pulled her hand back from him, not daring to look up at him. He helplessly sighed. A year! He had known her for a year. Deliberately or unintentionally, she had stepped in his life before a year on the same as that of today. He still remembered how those eyes were shut hard in fear of falling down when she had slipped because of an unpleasant prank by his friends on her and again, he remembered the surprise in those eyes once she found out that she hadn't touched the ground and rather had landed in someone's arms.
Had it not been his friends that time, he doubted if he had let her go off his embrace. She was so naive, so innocent that his heart fell for her so instantly that he never thought it could... for anyone but then, she wasn't anyone. The days following later, all he did was to chase her secretly without her awareness. He had followed her everywhere, she went. He loved watching her sight. Despite of his attempts of holding back, he could never resist her.
He wouldn't forget the day when his naive girl had imprinted her fingers on his cheek assuming he had spiked her drink in fresher's party and as well he wouldn't forget how adorably she had asked for his forgiveness when she came to know that he had not a slightest involvement in it and rather he was the one to save her from getting hurt by the disgusted guys who were unfortunately his friends. He hadn't ever thought that the people whom he called friends could stoop so low to play with a girl's dignity. That very night, he had broken his friendship with them about which she had come to know later and when she had, she was left utterly confused.
"Aapne mere liye, ye sab... Thank you."
He was drowned in the book which had kept him engulfed so greatly that he did not notice her presence, for the very first time. Hearing her, he quickly looked up pushing the book aside. "What?" Not striking what the conversation was all about, he blurted.
"You saved me... even broke your friendship with your friends..." She failed how to continue more.
"Uh thank YOU. Because of you I realized, that they cannot be my friends. I did not know they would turn out like this. Sorry for whatever happened with you." Apologizing was needed, he thought and she merely nodded, acknowledging.
"I'll leave." She did not take long to come out of the eye lock that lasted for a few moments in between them. She turned to leave but was stopped by his voice.
"Anika. I... was wondering if we could be friends." Having no reasons for getting nervous, he still was. What was he asking for? Just friendship but yet there was something, he felt wasn't going to be in his favour.
He watched the small smile on her face falling so instantly that it almost scared him. "I am sorry but I have no place for friendship in my life."
With that she left and with her, a piece of his soul left. A minute or two, he took to compose himself before he got out of the library, not allowing his emotions to overpower him there.
"I want to know today. Why can't you be with me?" He wasn't going to let her go today. One year! She avoided him for an entire year and he just let her. He never wanted to force anything upon her but he had always seen, there was something for him in those eyes whom he always got lost. He knew, she was just holding herself back for some reason. He thought, giving her space would set things a bit well but it did not.
"Leave me hand please." He heard her mumbling shutting her eyes and quickly loosened his hold but did not leave her.
"Anika please. Have I hurt you in any way?"
"No." Reply was quicker than he had thought.
"Then what it is?"
"Aapko kyu itna farak padta hai? We don't even know each other much." She was being reasonable, raising a valid point.
"Kyunki fark padta hai dammit."
"I am sorry but I cannot tell you anything." A jerk and she was out of his grip, stepping at enough from him, which she must. Those were the last words he heard from her. She turned, her back facing to him. None of them understood why she waited for a few moments there. Probably she did not want to go. She wanted to trust him? Clutching to her heart, whatever thoughts that occupied her mind she walked out without a glance back at him.
He did not know the reason, nor did she choose to tell him. What was it?
Fear?
****
I am really not sure if this will make any sense to you because it doesn't to me, at least😆
Okay to be serious, I wasn't going to write on solely fear. It was supposed to be a mix of fear, trust and love but then I couldn't manage finishing this and we are getting really late in putting up shots. So yeah. I might continue this in this post itself, as a sequel - Trust if Annika allows it.
I hope this is not too bad.
