CHAPTER 3
It seemed that one week had passed in a flick of a second. In all those seven days, Viplav had enjoyed a lot with his family and friends. He had somehow managed to hide the truth from his family when he was asked about his whereabouts on that rainy night. Viplav felt awkward to tell them that he was there ina house, for a whole night, with some women. But he could not lie to his two best friends who were more like his brothers.
"What?? Guru, u stayed for a night in TA? Did not u get any other place or house?" Pankaj was about to fall off the chair and Raj had coughed thrice when Vplav told them about that night in detail.
"Actually that was the only house nearby where people were still awake, so I...", Viplav lowered down his eyes.
"Viplav u had ur schooling in Mumbai. Ur college life was spent in Delhi.
People of Benaras are not like those in Mumbai or Delhi.
Here widows are treated no better than stray dogs. They are considered to be inauspicious and untouchables and are blamed for the death of their husbands. People prefer to stay away from widows. Seeing a widow early morning is considered to be a bad omen here", Raj tried to explain.
"So its better u keep ur mouth shut. I am not worried for u. You, being a doctor, are a respected person in the society. So people will not say u anything but those poor women will be harassed for no-reason, if anyone comes to know that they had allowed a boy in their ashram for a whole night", Pankaj tried to make Viplav understand.
Viplav was sitting in his chamber and thinking about all these when someone knocked at the door.
"Yes please come in".
A nurse in white uniform entered. "Sir its going to be 10pm. U will be leaving soon so I thought to remind u about the appointments and surgeries u have tomorrow"
"Yeah yeah please sit down"
The nurse sat on a chair opposite to him and started speaking. Viplav was not paying attention to what she was saying. He was carefully checking out the white uniform of the nurse and was recalling Raj and Pankaj's words, how widows were treated in Benaras.
"Sir...Sir...Sir", this time quite loudly the nurse called him.
Viplav, as if he suddenly woke up from a deep sleep, replied, "haan?"
"Sir I have told u everything... May I leave now?"
"Yes, yes sure. Thank you", Viplav smiled.
"You r welcome sir. See u tomorrow. Good Night", The nurse went out of his chamber.
Viplav also stood up, gathered his coat and bag and came out of the hospital.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Viplav was on his way to his home and was lost in his own thoughts. He himself was not aware of what he was thinking but he was thinking something, may be about that pretty girl, such an innocent face she had, so quiet and composed person and her ashram ladies, all were so simple. He knew nothing but he wanted to know more and more about them. He wanted to meet them again.
"How can anyone treat a woman like a stray dog just because they are widows? Were Raj and Pankaj right? My whole life I stayed out of Benaras and know nothing about these. This kind of treatment is not acceptable in this century", Viplav thought to himself.
He halted his car at one side of the road and got down to breadth in some fresh air.
What was he doing? A week has passed, still he was thinking about those women? What was there in that girl that attracted Viplav towards her, so much that Dr. Viplav Tripathi, for the first time, was unable to concentrate on his work.
And what was he doing today? Staring at the nurse's white uniform. Heights of non-sense thoughts revolving around his mind. Viplav thought to himself.
It was 10:30pm, he checked his wrist watch. The road was almost empty. Only one or two private cars and scooters or cycles were passing by. Suddenly Viplav noticed someone standing at a distance on the other side of the rad, in white saree.. She was none other than that beautiful girl who had been residing in Viplav's mind since the previous week.
Standing across the road his eyes twinkled at the sight of hers. He hurriedly crossed the road and stood in front of her. Taking the support of a lamp-post, she was standing there looking down at the ground, with tears flowing down her cheeks. She noticed someone's feet in front of her and slowly lifted her face and her eyes froze on his smiling face.
The smile on Viplav's face vanished within second, seeing her eyes flowing.
"What.. what happened? What has happened to u? why r u cr...crying?", Viplav suddenly got nervous seeing her teary eyes.
She did not answer but got busy in covering herself properly with her veil.
"Can I help u? Please tell me what has happened", Viplav asked again.
She lowered down her eyes, folded her hands and spoke softly in between her sobs, "Please don't bother urself. I am ok". For the first time Viplav heard her voice. It was so soft, sounded sweet and was loaded with extreme politeness.
"No u r not. I am willing to help you. But unless u tell me ur problem how will I...", Viplav stopped, looking down at her bleeding foot. She was unable to place her foot on the ground. She was terribly hurt and so was standing taking the support of the lamp-post. Viplav immediately got down on his knees and touched her foot. His touch shivered her. She took a gasp of pain and tried to move away hurriedly. She lost her balance and was about to fall down but Viplav immediately hold her by her arms. She was startled by viplav's sudden touch. She adjusted her veil and hold the lamp-post again for support.
"Don't move away. Show me ur foot... U r bleeding", Viplav again knelt down.
"No No please don't touch my feet", The girl hesitated a bit but finally gave in to Viplav's gentleness and concern.
"Listen I am a doctor. So please let me treat ur foot. Stand here and don't go anywhere. I will be back within a minute", Saying this he crossed the road and went back to his car. He drove his car and stopped in front of her. He opened the front door of the car and asked her to sit inside. The girl again refused but finally with the help of Viplav, she sat down on the front seat. Viplav took out a medical kit from the back seat and sat on his knees in front of the girl and started bandaging her wound.
"What were u doing here at this late night and how did u get hurt?"
"I came here for delivering a few orders which were given to us. While returning a bike hit me and I have been standing here for the last two hours because I am unable to walk"
"what? For the last two hours..? Such a careless person that bike rider is. He hurt a girl and went away without helping u. why did not u ask anyone for help? "
"No one will help me, because I am a widow"
"Are u mad? Why r speaking like this?. U r a widow so what?". Viplav sounded irritated.
The girl looked straight into his eyes and said, "I am a widow and I don't have any right to blame anyone or say anything to anyone".
Viplav did not know what to say. He finished bandaging her wounds.
"Sit inside properly. Its getting quite late. I will drop u to ur Ashram", Viplav said firmly as if ordered her with full right.
The girl did not object this time. While tying the seat belt, Viplav looked at her and said, "What happened? Will u not object and say that U can go alone", the girl did not answer. Viplav also started his car.
They had been travelling for 20 mins but neither of them spoke a word.
Viplav broke the silence and asked, "May I know ur name?"
The girl thought something for a few seconds and then answered in a soft tone, "Dhani".
"My name is Viplav Tripathi. I am a cardiologist by profession", Viplav smiled.
Silence again prevailed between them till they reached Tarini Ashram.
Viplav helped Dhani get out of the car.
"Ok OK I will go inside. I am feeling much better now. You please go away before anyone sees u with a widow". Saying this she walked inside the main gate but stopped to turn back and look at him.
"Thank You for helping me", Dhani smiled for the first time.
Viplav kept looking at her angelic face for some time, then walked towards her and gave her his visiting card, "Here is my number. Call ur new friend anytime if u need my help".
Dhani kept looking at him till he returned to his car, got inside and drove away.
She then checked his visiting card, smiled again to herself and entered inside her Ashram.
