To give something in deceitful way.. like a possession or something unwanted the term palm off also means to misrepresent. Give the wrong impression , to pretend.. these meanings ran through my mind as I saw this episode. The opposite of all above would be of course, to tell the truth..
Adieu ..with a prayer of success, a hesitant yes to parting , a kiss to the forehead , a lingering hug to say love all of you, a smile of sheer bliss, a final sensing of her hand, and from her a brush of her lips on his forehead, almost like a prayer for her god.. then it is , a final turn of the head with a wave, corresponded with a wave in return.. marks their goodbye for now. dhani's heart is consoled for so much warmth of affection he leaves behind with her to get by..plus a contact with him on video call tomorrow night for Shalu's heena ritual night.
No rest for the wicked..Raja flicks open the knife! in the cold razor blade he feels her razor sharp slap on his cheek! Suman's mocking face that makes him dig! dig! the point of his knife in the wooden frame of the window. Shalu desires sharpen as she walks towards his room to catch a peek of her husband to be. But she is sharply accosted by her mother who tweaks her ear unceremoniously and denounces her meeting Raja..unacceptable. In walks sulakhsana and cuttingly challenges Kanak's traditional view ,presents Shalu with a sari sent for her by her shy son Raja wants Shalu to go and meet Raja in his room.The two women Kanak and sulakhshana are at logger heads in the perception of tradition values, sulakhshana dismisses her as being old school where as their family avasthi's as open minded!plus takes Kanak's daughter to dress her up for her son!
This daughter with great fortitude tells her mother, to flee is to be a coward! Kanak packs ready to leave town before marriage. Dhani dithers and Dulari blames her for breaking her promise. But Dhani digs her heels in why should she run?she hadn't done no wrong besides how much more can Raja frighten her, what guarantee do we have he won't comes after her once they leave the ashram? besides Viplav will not let anything happen to her . Dulari takes solace from Viplav's name and Dhani's trust in him and so the idea of Mathura is shelved. But not without Dhani's word that for the next two days till Shalu's wedding Dhani would not put one step out of the ashram.. when Viplav comes to marry her at the ashram only then can she step out of the ashram. Dhani vows and both mother and daughter hug each in agreement.The mothers strain regarding her daughters safety will only diminish when her daughter leaves the ashram with her husband beside her.
This mother hell is bent on imposing her greed upon her son. Her son is for the moment used as a pawn to bring better times ,richer times to the family. The son Raja though,still smarts under some previous harsh realities and most recently a fresh slap to give him a reality check! Raja continues toying with the noose which he decrees should be around Suman's neck. His mother barges in and literally forces down a sari dressed Shalu down his neck. He turns away from his mother and wife to be. Deceitfully his mother calls her son's disinterest as his shyness .Shulakhshna's greed for Shalu's wealth , makes her put words in her sons mouth and he is loathed to say ,yes she looks lovely as if Shalu was a beauty sent from the heavens.She advices him that false praise is necessary to secure relationships , and for one's own benefit one has to pay lip service! She craftily reminds him in a matter of hours he'll be married and get closer totheir ultimate goal.. As the son inlaw all the wealth will be his and then theirs! Its odd how they turn a blind eye to the fact that Viplav is next in line to all the estate of Dashrant tripathi!
Viplav embraces the new day and in terms of the fleeting time away from him makes him whine and pine for Dhani like a love struck lover. But being pragmatic he wishes to occupy himself to kill time out from Dhani! But before that, good fortune comes to his room with a proposal that appeals mightily to viplav! exactly what he wants on his terms too!..dadaji comes to his room and appeals to him, that after two days when Shalu gets married, he too chooses a girl and gets married it would be great. Viplav happily consents , if the girl is one he chooses. Dadaji agrees , as long as their horoscopes coincide. Both dada pota give and take and the brief discussion terminates on a happy note. it's odd how easily Dashrant agrees to Viplav's condition, the girl would be of his choice! Does he not but for once think the girl might be Dhani? but Viplav jumps up in joy as he calls , who so ever she may be! but he is not changing the choice of girl he has made.
Dhani will celebrate her heena ceremony , and she wants her family to celebrate and mark the auspicious with her. Since the widows would refrain from putting heena on their palm. Dhani would have to change where they apply the heena! Raj laxmi helps and advises , inderani and sita mai that Dhani suggested for them to use heena paste on their hair as it cools the brain and cures head aches! What a novel way that is inclusive to the excluded widows attitude of society as they are considered ill auspicious and kept away from such occasions. Dhani's heena's colour is the that of heartfelt love .. that the widows feel for their Dhani..
On the other hand is Shalu's heena paste, stirred and mixed with deceit ,guile and fraud by Raja's mother..she offers the paste to Kanak and taunts , so deep will be the colour of this heena on Shalu's palm that it will stay on with her for the rest of her life!.. mami ji teases her sister in law ,that never mind the heena her wily ways have completely duped this family with her colours of trickery and duplicity..
The heena ceremony.. Shalu brought in and sat on the small stage , Viplav plays the charming brother and compliments all ,especially his brother in law. Ceremony begins with the boys name lined with heena on the girls palm. Viplav becomes the heena artist, offers to write Shalu's husband's name on her palm. Dhani retires to the privacy of her room.. both her and her Viplav are well coordinated to complete the pre wedding ceremonies they missed out on.. Dhani has her heena paste ready. Not in a crowd of people but to a corner moves Viplav , and pulls out a heena cone ot of his pocket and lovingly writes the name of his beloved Dhani! so the groom palm starts by writing her name first... Dhani simultaneously writes Viplav's name on her palms, and the universe rings with the colour of love that is white.. Dhani rings him and he smiles.. tells her he has something to show her and she replies she too has something she wishes to show him!he wants her to first but she wants him to be first! mild fun loving argument sorted when they decided to show what simultaneously in the video call at Viplav's count of three a pair of palms which each others names engraved with heena! Both smile at each other smitten by love for each,and Viplav sides his eyes swiftly and presses his lips together and gives her smooch and to his utter shocked delightdhani puckers her lips and blows him a kiss to on the video call... he reflects tenderly not only our hearts united, our minds think alike , its likes two bodies with one life ..dhani like a curious wife wants to know about the function. He replies everything is fantastic, except for one thing and that's her absence !
Raja in a trance writes suman s name on his palm.. when its terun for heena his mother checks his palm and presses her on his palm to destroy Suman s name on his hand a scene symbolising she holds her boy in the palm of her hand .and exerts complete over him and shulakhsana forcibly writes Shalu name on his palm
Poor Viplav can never escape from his mothers evil eyes. Minding his own business he looks at his palm and smiles very much in love. She suspects something andhe smiles and says nothng reallt and join his palm and crosses his fingers and says nothing.. Kanak possibly suspects her son has Dhani written with heena on his palm.. .Viplav shows her the ceremony as best as he could. Dhani can see Shalu but only catches the grooms arms only as Viplav receives a call from the sketch artist informs him Suman's sketch is ready ! Viplav gives Raj the good news , Suman's sketch is ready to be handed over to the police ,then she'll be caught and that Viplav says will be his biggest wedding present ! and Raja wears a sardonic expression on his face and muses.. you don't realize what you're giving me as wedding present Viplav, you have with your own hands issued the warrant for your lovers death!
So the ceremomy happens one visible and celebrated, but stands invisibly spiked up with lies and sham. The other invisible, heena ceremony between Viplav and Dhani is flavoured with the true colour of sincerity, faithfulness and righteous and paramount above all, the ceremony betwixt the two has blessings of the deities..hamlet53 13.3.16
