There is no such custom amongst Bengalis, PH is making that up!

Even at Pag Phera or such rituals its the custom to serve the newlyweds with fish and meat but NOT if groom's family is pure vegetarians.

Like all Indians, Bengali families are conscious abt pleasing groom's family and in reality bride's family would never hurt the sentiments of groom's family like that!
What they are showing in this serial is utter BS! 😡

As a Bengali, I take offense to how they are showing Pintu and his sister obsessed with fish dishes!
Bengali cuisine has dozens of mouth-watering Vegetarian dishes, like Shukto, chochchori (mixed veggies),
Shaak (14 types of different saags are there )
Lauki with Vadi or peas
Chhanar dalna (paneer curry)
kanchkolar kofta (raw banana kofta curry)
Echor dalna (raw jackfuit curry)
Mochar ghonto (banana flower curry)
dhokar dalna (lentil dumplings curry) and the list can go on and on.

As a non veg Bengali, I really love all our vegetarian dishes!

We are stipulated to eat only vegetarian dishes on certain days, on Durga-Ashtami, for Shraadh ceremonies (Funeral), on most Puja days, some ladies even have pure vegetarian on every Thursday as its Lakshmi Puja day.

The makers of this serial are Punjabis (Tony and Diya Singh) of DJ's Creative Unit and they have no idea abt what Bengalis eat and how they serve people who are pure vegetarians.👎🏼

Ive had vegetarian friends come for dinner and had no problem serving them pure veggie dishes as our Bengali vegetarian repertoire is almost endless!

I have a good mind to report this PH to the IBC whose link and phone number is always given at the beginning of each episode.

Pallavi ...appreciate your views ! I think ...here the CVs are not trying to demean either Bengli culture or the UP or Bihar culture ! They are creating a situation to dramatise ...to widen the gap between the two families ,so that Bunty will have to leave his house to be with Sagarika ...yes ..hurting the people's sentiment is not comedy .. it is only mockery !
[ I posted the same in my thread too ]

Sounds mouth watering.

It is not about vegetarian food being tasty and stuff.

But certainly someone out there even in cultures where fish is considered vegetarian would know that pure vegetarians do not eat anything meat or meat products and of course that includes fish.

India is multicultural after all and nowadays people know a lot about other cultures because people from everywhere live in other places.

That too Benaras is truly multicultural having a cross section of people from all places.

Holy city after all.

That is why I thought Sagarika's father and aunt would know about how others live. They are more educated than Amma seems to be.

Buntea bhaiyya took a fancy liking for Sagarika and never thought for one moment about this cultural differences.

Amma is more worried about her son supporting his wife too much and going away from her .

Even she never mentioned or thought about how different Sagarika's family is from hers in these food habits.

How is Buntea bhaiyya going to manage everything let us wait and see.

Fish is NOT considered vegetarian in Bengali household. What they are showing is complete nonsense!

The serial's writers have no idea abt Bengali culture and customs.

Fish is very much non veg, also meat, chicken, eggs and even masoor dal, onions, garlic are all considered non veg by Bengalis.

Traditional widows in Bengal still dont eat onions, garlic, masoor dal, fish, eggs or any of the above.

This serial's writers seem to be biased against non vegetarians and so they are showing complete nonsense without any knowledge abt the real customs and tradition of Bengalis.

Tulasi14 it would be better for you to read the thread before commenting.

Your "brahmin" friends eating non veg (of their own choice) has nothing to do with this thread .

I don't think you understood the topic.

Well-said Tulasi, notwithstanding the fact that you did not read the thread before commenting, your suggestion was based on mutual respect for each sect, veg or non-veg. It is really all about choices, I am born in a non-veg family but am a veg by choice, yet cook non-veg for my family because my love for them overrides everything else. Each one to his own. you may eat vegetables, fish, meat, whatever, but do not look down on others who eat what you don't.

Lord Krishna, the supreme God of Hindu trinity, once remarked, if you eat meat ( read as non-veg) or no, he disliked the arrogance of vegetarians as if they were superior beings. Such a remarkable remark from a Hindu God and you have echoed the same sentiments of respect and tolerance for another group👏👏👏.

Gina, I read this long back and was so pleasantly surprised at the vision of Lord Krishna, have the book with me, will try to get the exact quote where he questioned the arrogance of vegetarians towards meat eaters. He said something to the effect that if you do not eat something, do not eat but do not look down on those who do. Will search the book and get the exact quote.

Anyway, whether in real-life or in a serial, respect towards each other is important!
