New Potter book leaks in Canada, gag order issued

Reuters
Posted online: Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at 1202 hours IST

Vancouver, British Columbia, July 12: Harry Potter's latest secret may have slipped out in Canada, and publishers of the best-selling books hope the magical allure of author J.K. Rowling's autograph will get it back under wraps.

Rowling's sixth book about the young wizard is scheduled to be released on July 16, but a store near Vancouver briefly put the put the book on sale last week.

Raincoast Books Ltd, which distributes the books in Canada, said a "small number" of the books were sold, and it has won a court injunction barring the buyers of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from disclosing the plot.

The court also ordered all the copies be returned to Raincoast, which has promised the early buyers book plates autographed by Rowling once the embargo is lifted.

Harry Potter party planned for hastings

By JENA SCHEUNEMAN

Monday, July 11, 2005 9:33 PM PDT

BULLHEAD CITY - At least one local business is putting on its wizard hat to come up with magical ways to get children to read during the coming weeks.

Harry Potter is flying back on to bookshelves at 12:01 a.m., Saturday, with the sixth book in J.K. Rowling's series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

Based on the number of readers who turned out two years ago for the fifth "Harry Potter" release, hastings Books, Music and Video is preparing for a large crowd at its Friday night release party.

"We are going to have a great, great party," said Dian Jongsma, book department manager at hastings.

Jongsma said selling Rowling's new book will not be difficult, as she already had 350 people on a waiting list as of Monday morning, and expected at least that many more reservations by Friday night. Orders of the book at Barnes & Noble stores and at Barnes & Noble.com have topped one million, making it the best-selling pre-order book of all time, according to Yahoo news.

"The book will sell itself. The party is just to have the fun and magic that J.K. Rowling wanted to inspire to the children," she said.

Festivities at hastings will begin at about 10 p.m., Friday evening.

The Society for Creative Anachronism and the Adrian Empire groups will be attending the party.

"They'll have real swords and be in full costume with knights and ladies," she said.

A "sorting hat" booth will tell readers which of the four Hogwarts households they should belong to. The anachronistic groups will give out 200 wood-burned medallions that each denote one of the four households that readers are assigned to.

Free butter beer will be offered and there will be a trivia contest, a costume contest and a how many Bertie botts (jelly beans) guessing contest.

Another Harry Potter delicacy, chocolate frogs will be sold, with funds earned going to the local literacy council.

Two years ago, at the midnight-release of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," Jongsma said lines wound through every aisle of the store and there was no parking within a block of hastings.

"Cops came at about 1 a.m. and wanted to know what was going on. It was a lot of fun," she said.

The local party will be one of about 2,000 release parties around the country, Jongsma said. She has even received a call from a group of Northern Arizona University students that plan to time a trip to the Colorado River with the hastings release party.

Harry Potter story time will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday.

"No muggles are allowed," she said. "We'll see you at Platform 9 and 3/4."

Jongsma enjoys the Harry Potters series herself, but said she loves the books mostly because they have inspired the joy of reading in so many children.

"Let's get them away from the tube and make their minds think! And besides, what's better on a hot a hot summer day than a cold drink and a good book?" she asked.

Canada leads in Harry Potter eco-plan

Harry Potter will be working his magic on saving forests around the world after a Canadian initiative sparked global interest in recent weeks.

Publishers from Israel, Germany, Britain and Italy have followed Canada's lead in choosing to print Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince -- set to be released at 12:01 a.m. this Saturday -- on recycled paper, saving an estimated 50,000 trees.

"It all started right here in Canada," said Nicole Rycroft, executive director at Markets Initiative, a publishing conservation group based in Vancouver that speaks on this issue for Friends of Clayoquot Sound, Greenpeace (in North America) and the British Columbia chapter of the Sierra Club of Canada, referring to the Canadian publisher of Harry Potter, Raincoast Books, being the only one in 2003 to publish the fifth Harry Potter book on Ancient Forest Friendly (AFF) paper.

"Harry Potter is a phenomenon unto itself. Because it may very well be the largest print run in history, it's going to be using a lot of paper. That translates to a lot of trees," Rycroft said.

Advertisements

"Essentially, we're seeing the transformation of an entire industry right before our very eyes. It's revolutionary."

But U.S. publisher Scholastic, with the largest Harry Potter print run in the world (10.8-million copies now printed and waiting to be distributed), has not joined the ecological initiative and used 100-per-cent recycled paper, causing environmental groups including the National Wildlife Federation and Greenpeace to urge Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the homegrown edition, but instead to purchase Canada's version on-line.

"There is some recycled content in those books that Scholastic prints and we have never used any paper that would endanger ancient forests," said Kyle Good, a spokeswoman for Scholastic.

Good, however, would not disclose the percentage of that recycled content.

She also declined to comment on the boycott by environmentalists.

Rycroft finds it unfortunate that Scholastic has not signed on, at least now to adopt recycled paper for its second print run.

"They're really missing a huge opportunity. They have a chance to not only leave a cultural heritage, but a natural heritage as well."

In Israel, translators won't get their copies until this Saturday because of the secrecy surrounding the book, pushing the release date for their translation of The Half-Blood Prince until some time between September and December.

But that isn't stopping them from going green.

"It's the perfect book to be printed on recycled paper and we liked what Canadian [publishers] were doing," said Ilai Melzer of the Israeli publisher Books in the Attic, which will print an initial run of about 80,000 books.

Although Melzer points out that it is expensive to print on recycled paper in Israel, he says it's worth the extra effort because he has heard it's the wish of author J. K. Rowling herself.

"We do what the author wants," he said. "In Israel, we don't have as many trees as Canada, and so if you want to print on eco-friendly paper, we have to import it from France, which is fairly expensive."

For 13-year-old Irene Casey of Arlington, Va., ordering a Canadian copy of Half-Blood Prince was a no-brainer.

"The ancient forests are really important to me and I don't think it's necessary to print books on paper that will destroy those ancient forests," said Casey, who said her mom's environmentalist attitudes have had some influence on her decision.

Casey, who has been reading Harry Potter since she was in Grade 1 and her teacher read the book to her class, plans to start her own petition this summer and hopes to gather enough names to push Scholastic to go along with the environmentally friendly ways on the other side of the border.

Rycroft of Market Initiatives says the spread of the "green" Harry Potter is good news for forests around the world and the species that depend on them for their survival.

She added that for the seventh Harry Potter book, her group has set the goal of having recycled paper used in all 55 countries where Harry Potter is published.

'Harry Potter' leak turns into marketing magic
Last updated Jul 12 2005 07:11 PM PDT
CBC News
It appears that the accidental sale of 14 copies of the latest Harry Potter book at a Coquitlam store last week may have been a marketing blessing in disguise.

Coquitlam store where books were sold

Raincoast Books, the Canadian publisher of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince , had gone to court to obtain an injunction to keep the plot secret and get the books back from the "accidental customers." Raincoast also offered a reward to get the books back – a signed bookplate from J.K. Rowling plus other assorted gifts. The inadvertent sale of the book was news at media outlets around the world, giving the book a massive shot of free publicity.

Company spokesperson Jamie Broadhurst says while it was touch and go for a while, Harry Potter fans have nothing to worry about. "At the moment, the secret still remains," he says. He won't say how many of the 14 books have been returned, but says the people who have returned it are "honourable and obviously have the Harry Potter ethic." "No one wants to disappoint fans. That's what it all boils down to," says Broadhurst. But a Simon Fraser University marketing professor says it's not just about the fans. Lindsay Meredith says even Harry Potter couldn't have conjured up a better promotional campaign. "Talk about falling in a ditch and coming out smelling like a rose. Basically what we have here is some of the best darn coverage to launch a book I think I've ever seen," he says. We have national and international coverage for Harry Potter. You couldn't buy advertising that good if you tried." The latest Harry Potter book officially goes on sale at 12:01 a.m. this Saturday. So far more than 200 million Harry Potter books have been sold.

All in readiness for Harry Potter

Thomas Chapman is ready to enter the world of JK Rowling when Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is released on Saturday.

By Tim Whale
Competition to sell the next instalment in the Harry Potter saga is fiercer than a game of quidditch, with offers and giveaways flying at the customer like a kamikaze bludger.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth book in the series by JK Rowling, will hit the shops on July 16 and retailers are already reporting record pre-sales.
Ashburton Whitcoulls manager Elfeda Dixon said pre-sales were exceeding other stores of the same size and more had been sold than for any other book since the shop was opened last November.
Ashburton Paper Plus owner Terry McNab said his store had sold over half its allotment of books and pre-sales were at about the same level as those of the last Harry Potter book.
A spokesperson for The Warehouse said over three quarters of their pre-order cards had sold so far.
All stores have recommended customers buy the book early to guarantee a copy was available and to avoid queues when it is released on Saturday.
Mrs Dixon told the Ashburton Guardian her store would sell the book at a special price of $29.95 for the first few days. Whitcoulls was offering a $5 gift voucher to anyone who pre-ordered the book.
Mr McNab said because Paper Plus was owner-operated, each store could set their own price but he would wait until closer to the release date. Paper Plus was offering the opportunity for customers to exchange Fly Buys for the book.
The Warehouse was guaranteeing the lowest price and will give the first 100 people who buy the book a free hat.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be released worldwide at exactly 11.01am in New Zealand and not even the bookshops can open the boxes or read the book until that time.

Pope Opposes Harry Potter Novels - Signed Letters from Cardinal Ratzinger Now Online

RIMSTING, Germany, July 13, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - LifeSiteNews.com has obtained and made available online copies of two letters sent by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was recently elected Pope, to a German critic of the Harry Potter novels. In March 2003, a month after the English press throughout the world falsely proclaimed that Pope John Paul II approved of Harry Potter, the man who was to become his successor sent a letter to a Gabriele Kuby outlining his agreement with her opposition to J.K. Rowling's offerings. (See below for links to scanned copies of the letters signed by Cardinal Ratzinger.)

As the sixth issue of Rowling's Harry Potter series - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - is about to be released, the news that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger expressed serious reservations about the novels is now finally being revealed to the English-speaking world still under the impression the Vatican approves the Potter novels.

In a letter dated March 7, 2003 Cardinal Ratzinger thanked Kuby for her "instructive" book Harry Potter - gut oder bse (Harry Potter- good or evil?), in which Kuby says the Potter books corrupt the hearts of the young, preventing them from developing a properly ordered sense of good and evil, thus harming their relationship with God while that relationship is still in its infancy.

"It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly," wrote Cardinal Ratzinger.

The letter also encouraged Kuby to send her book on Potter to the Vatican prelate who quipped about Potter during a press briefing which led to the false press about the Vatican support of Potter. At a Vatican press conference to present a study document on the New Age in April 2003, one of the presenters - Fr. Peter Fleedwood - made a positive comment on the Harry Potter books in response to a question from a reporter. Headlines such as "Pope Approves Potter" (Toronto Star), "Pope Sticks Up for Potter Books" (BBC), "Harry Potter Is Ok With The Pontiff" (Chicago Sun Times) and "Vatican: Harry Potter's OK with us" (CNN Asia) littered the mainstream media.

In a second letter sent to Kuby on May 27, 2003, Cardinal Ratzinger "gladly" gave his permission to Kuby to make public "my judgement about Harry Potter."

The most prominent Potter critic in North America, Catholic novelist and painter Michael O'Brien commented to LifeSiteNews.com on the "judgement" of now-Pope Benedict saying, "This discernment on the part of Benedict XVI reveals the Holy Father's depth and wide ranging gifts of spiritual discernment." O'Brien, author of a book dealing with fantasy literature for children added, "it is consistent with many of the statements he's been making since his election to the Chair of Peter, indeed for the past 20 years - a probing accurate read of the massing spiritual warfare that is moving to a new level of struggle in western civilization. He is a man in whom a prodigious intellect is integrated with great spiritual gifts. He is the father of the universal church and we would do well to listen to him."

English translations of the two letters by Cardinal Ratzinger follow:

March 7, 2003

Esteemed and dear Ms. Kuby!

Many thanks for your kind letter of February 20th and the informative book which you sent me in the same mail. It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly.

I would like to suggest that you write to Mr. Peter Fleedwood, (Pontifical Council of Culture, Piazza S. Calisto 16, I00153 Rome) directly and to send him your book.

Sincere Greetings and Blessings,

+ Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

Esteemed and dear Ms. Kuby,

Somehow your letter got buried in the large pile of name-day , birthday and Easter mail. Finally this pile is taken care of, so that I can gladly allow you to refer to my judgment about Harry Potter.

Sincere Greetings and Blessings,

+ Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

Bookstores, fans prepare for next Harry Potter book
By Jason Jacks, Tara Slate Donaldson and Valerie Walker
07/12/2005

Staring over the brim of a cup of latte at your local mega-bookstore, you may have noticed the signage bearing those studious-looking round glasses looking back at you. Yes, he is most certainly back -- or at least he soon will be.

Harry Potter, the four-eyed pubescent wizard, flies once again into libraries and bookstores July 16 with "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth book in J.K. Rowling's wildly popular series.

< =1.1 src="http://bannerads.zwire.com/bannerads/bannerad.asp?ADLOCATION=4000&PAG=461&BRD=2553&LOCALPCT=100&AREA=503&VERT=14419&NAREA=471&AT=JS&barnd=6605">
This installment, according to book experts, will most likely set off the same buying avalanche that rolled through stores in 2003, when "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" was released.

The Fauquier County Library has ordered 19 copies of regular print copies; 45 have already been reserved. Three copies of the large print version have been ordered; nine have been reserved. Seventeen of the audio version (11 on CD, 10 on tape) are on order, with 27 requests for reserves.

Representatives of Scholastic Inc., says they're prepared for a frenzy. The book's U.S. publisher announced it is printing 10.8 million copies of the 672-page book--the biggest initial print run of the six, the company said.

Throughout the region, many booksellers, including all the Borders and Barnes & Noble stores, will be holding release parties Friday evening and into early Saturday morning, when they are allowed to start selling the books.

Jessie Marino, who works at Borders Books Music & Cafe in Manassas, said the store has received 1,200 preorders from customers. Those who didn't preorder can still line up to buy one when the books go on sale at midnight, but she said there are no guarantees that walk-ins will get one of the relatively few unclaimed copies.

Regardless, she said, children of all ages are invited to come by for the Midnight Magic party.

"We're staying open until 5 or 6, until people leave," she said.

David McElroy, manager of the Waldenbooks at Springfield Mall, said most of his "Half-Blood Prince" books are already reserved too. However, he will have some on hand Saturday to sell. His store will close at its normal time Friday but, like others, will reopen later that night to let in the throng of fans expected to start snatching up books after midnight.

"We need an hour or two to get ready," he explained.

Celeste Conforti of Barnes and Noble in Manassas said they start selling the books at midnight. The store will be open continuously through the day on Friday and will stay open to accommodate all the people who have reserved copies ahead of time.

Conforti said several hundred customers preordered and clerks will be handing out tickets for each of the preorders to ensure an orderly line.

The Barnes and Noble party will include crafts, trivia games, door prizes and activities such as wand-making.

In the past, Conforti said, patrons and staff have dressed up for the occasion and this party should be no exception.

Miranda Pennington, 19, said she intends to be at Borders by midnight to pick up her reserved copy. The Potterhead, who proclaimed she will not be wearing a Harry Potter costume this year "because I am too old," said her copy will not be collecting dust on a bookshelf.

"That night!" she said proudly about when she will read the book. "I'll probably be up reading to 2 or 3 in the morning, or until I fall asleep."

Those who don't want to stay up all night on Friday do have the option of getting up early on Saturday instead.

Waldenbooks at Manassas Mall will close at the regular time on Friday, but will host a Potter party on Saturday morning.

Donna Abarr, who works at the store, said the bookshop will open at 8 a.m. Saturday for activities like games and raffles that will run until 9:30 a.m.

Waldenbooks has received 230 reserve orders but will have more copies available for walk-ins.

And those who didn't preorder or line up early enough to get a book on the release day can take heart. When "The Order of the Phoenix" was released, most bookstores had audio cassettes and CDs still available hours after all the hard copies were gone.

Michael Araj, 20, isn't taking any chances. He has his copy reserved through Amazon.com. However, the College of William and Mary rising junior cannot wait on the U.S. Postal Service for his Harry Potter hit. He plans to wait in line at Borders to secure a second copy.

He said he's "hooked" on the series because of its many unexpected twists and turns.

"I still can't predict what is going to happen in Rowling's books," he said.

Susan Woodcock, the children's books selector for the Fairfax public library system, said boxes of Harry Potter books in the past usually arrived, under tight security, three or four days ahead of the release date.

This year, like other Harry Potter launches, she said the boxes, with no mention of what is inside, will probably show up plastered with red lettering warning staff not to open until the release date.

Apparently, Harry Potter's grasp of sorcery is equaled by his knowledge of the law.

"We had to sign an affidavit saying that the books cannot leave the building until the day the sale starts," Woodcock said.

EXCLUSIVE: THE REAL JK ROWLING STORY
DAY TWO
By Nick Webster

CONJURING up the magical world of Harry Potter has made her as famous as the schoolboy wizard she created. Yet JK Rowling remains an enigma.

Little is known about the private life of the best-selling author who is rarely seen in public. And that's just how she wants it to stay.

The fame and fortune Joanne's novels have brought her is at odds with the quiet life she craves. And being one of the wealthiest women in the world has made her fearful for the safety of herself and her family.

Today, the former single mum, who once struggled on benefits and lived in a draughty Edinburgh flat is richer than the Queen. She now moves between luxurious homes in Edinburgh, Perthshire and London, hidden from prying eyes behind high walls and protected by CCTV cameras.

< = src="http://a.as-eu.falkag.net/dat/njf/1016/mirror/news/article/mirror_news_article_mpu.js" =text/> function Ads_PopUp() {}

Guarding her privacy, she travels in cars with blacked-out windows and instructs her drivers to use their headlights to dazzle any waiting photographers.

Understandably, Joanne, who is 40 at the end of this month, is most security conscious when it comes to her three children.

Eleven-year-old Jessica - her daughter by ex-husband Jorge Arantes, a Portuguese journalist, was followed by two children with her doctor husband Neil Murray - David, two, and daughter Mackenzie Jean, who was born on January 23 this year.

A WARE that her vast fortune could jeopardise her children's safety, they are never photographed or used for publicity purposes.

She is right to be cautious. Joanne has been the target of stalkers, including obsessed American fan Melissa Kumsuk Cho, who repeatedly turned up at her house and made nuisance telephone calls.

Given all this, it seems odd that when she does venture out on foot, it's without a bodyguard. But it's her way of not drawing attention to herself.

On the rare occasions she is spotted in Edinburgh - usually wearing dark clothes which are neither starkly fashionable nor obviously expensive - it is clear she has made an effort not to stand out from the crowd.

One favourite outfit she braves the outside world in is a dark, ankle-length coat and a crumpled velvet hat, worn pulled down over her ears to ward off unwanted stares and hide her telltale blonde hair. Keeping a low profile lets her go about her business unhassled, but that's not the only reason she tries to be incognito.

For JK Rowling, it is all about leading as normal a life as possible.

Considering that Forbes magazine rates her as one of the richest people in the world - she is one of the few women on its billionares list - she does not flaunt her wealth.

She shops in department stores such as Jenners, and while she can afford expensive items from elite Edinburgh jeweller Hamilton & Inches, she goes for cheaper, chunky costume pieces instead.

When she socialises, she avoids glitzy showbiz parties, preferring private dinners in the homes of close friends and family. It was at one such occasion that she met Neil.

They got married in December 2001 at their sprawling 1million 12-acre estate on the banks of the River Tay near Aberfeldy in Perthshire. Their other homes are a detached Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh and a 5.25m six-storey London mansion in Kensington.

Neil obviously shares her desire to lead a normal life. Being married to the super-rich author has not stopped him working at an NHS hospital in Edinburgh.

W HEN they dine out it's rarely at glitzy restaurants - preferring modest places such as Pizza Express.

If one of Joanne's haunts does become public knowledge, she never goes back for fear of being mobbed by fans. When an Edinburgh newspaper revealed that she enjoyed visiting city delicatessen Margiotta, she never returned.

One of the few exceptions to this is the Buffet King all-you-can-eat Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh.

Its previous incarnation was Nicolson's - now famous as the place where Joanne wrote Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone a decade ago. She is said to return there occasionally when suffering writer's block.

Back then, as a single mum with just 69-a-week benefits, it was a 4,000 loan from a close friend that kept her dreams of training as a teacher - and finishing her first Harry Potter novel - alive.

The second literary agent she tried, Christopher Little, took her on. But it was a year before he found a publisher, after eight had rejected the manuscript.

Finally, in August 1996, Bloomsbury offered 2,500 to publish the author who now earns 250,000 a day. It's the kind of cash which makes Joanne one of only five self-made female dollar billionaires and the first billion-dollar author.

On her website, she recalls the moment she was told that Bloomsbury had made an offer: "I could not quite believe my ears. 'You mean it's going to be published?' I asked, rather stupidly. 'It's definitely going to be published?'

"After I had hung up, I screamed and jumped into the air. Jessica, who was sitting in her high-chair enjoying tea, looked thoroughly scared."

Since that day, she has sold 265 million books in 200 countries and 62 languages, including Latin and Ancient Greek, earning her 562million. Joanne has also won more literary awards than any other author in the world.

Every book has broken publishing records. The fifth, Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix, sold 1.8million copies in the UK within 24 hours of publication - making it the fastest-selling book ever. And Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, which goes on sale on Saturday, is expected to top it.

E XPERTS at Waterstone's booksellers predict that on its first day, the sixth Potter novel will sell more than two million copies in the UK and over 10 million worldwide.

Joanne is also credited with kick-starting a reading revolution among a generation more at home in front of a PC or PlayStation than in a library.

And it's not just books. The nation has gone potty for Harry in other ways, too. The first three film adaptations have grossed more than 1.35billion worldwide.

The fourth instalment, Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, which will be in cinemas in November, is expected to do the best business yet.

Their astounding success has had a knock-on effect on Britain's film industry. When negotiating with Warner Bros, Joanne insisted they be based in Britain and use only British actors.

As a result, tens of millions of pounds has been pumped into the British economy. Meanwhile, homegrown teenage actors Daniel Radcliffe (who plays Harry), Rupert Grint (Ron) and Emma Watson (Hermione) have become multi-millionaires.

The DVDs have also been a hit. The Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets DVD smashed the one million sales mark in two days. Audio versions of the novels have sold more than 1.1 million copies, making them the best-selling audio books ever. And another 1billion has been generated from toys and other official merchandise.

One of the early passages of Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone contains the line: "Every child in our world will know his name."

It has proved to be astonishingly prophetic - both for the fictional hero and his mysterious creator.

B.C. court gags Potter fans with latest book

COQUITLAM, B.C. -- There's good news and bad news for the 14 people who snagged a copy of the hotly anticipated sixth Harry Potter book when it landed by mistake on the shelves of a grocery store.

The bad news is they are under a B.C. Supreme Court order not to talk about it, copy it, sell it or even read it before it is officially released at 12:01 a.m. July 16.

Madame Justice Gill's order also compels them to return it to the publisher, Raincoast Book Distribution Ltd., until the official release when it will be returned to them.

The good news? Obey the law and they will be rewarded by Raincoast with an autograph by author J.K. Rowling and a gift pack.

The innocent consumers were likely stunned to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on the shelves of the Real Canadian Superstore on Thursday.

The book has been shrouded in secrecy and its release has been highly orchestrated to enable everyone -- readers, reviewers, even publishers -- to crack it open all at once.

And then came the big oops by someone at the grocery store.

"It was an inadvertent error on behalf of one of our staff," said Geoff Wilson, a spokesman for the store. He said 14 of the books were sold before they realized the mistake.

"As soon as we heard about it and were notified we quickly whisked them off the shelf," said Wilson, who didn't know how long the books were on sale.

Vancouver's Raincoast Books was granted the injunction on Saturday after learning about the breech of an embargo agreement between themselves and the store.

Raincoast's director of marketing Jamie Broadhurst said worldwide retailers of the book had to sign "very, very, very tight embargoes promising that they will not put the book on sale until one minute past midnight on July 16."

Broadhurst said Raincoast, the Canadian publisher of the wildly successful series, is also under extremely tight security and most staff have yet to lay eyes on the book.

He said this week's release of the book is like Christmas in July for millions of Potter fans worldwide.

"Just as you wouldn't open a Christmas present before Christmas why would you spoil the secret of Harry Potter before July 16?" said Broadhurst.
