Last four Potter fans reach interview finals

06/07/2005 - 11:23:47

Four young Harry Potter fans have reached the finals of a competition to carry out the UK's only TV interview with JK Rowling.

The youngsters will battle it out in an ITV1 show to prove which of them knows most about the schoolboy wizard.

Whoever wins will land an exclusive interview with Rowling at Edinburgh Castle on July 17 – the day after her latest book Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is finally published.

The finalists are Kallum Peel, 11, from Bradford; Lily Adams, 10, from Bournemouth; Owen Jones, 14, from Cardiff; and Helen Carron, 13, from Liverpool.

They will appear in the ITV1 show Harry Potter at the Castle: The Quest for the Ultimate Harry Potter Fan on July 10.

Presenter Ben Shephard will quiz them on their Harry Potter knowledge and test their journalistic skills.

He said: "There's a lot at stake for the four contestants. To get this far is an amazing achievement but to be crowned the ultimate Harry Potter fan, to meet JK Rowling and attend the book launch is a chance in a lifetime."

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is expected to smash first day sales records. More than 200,000 copies have already been pre-ordered on amazon.co.uk.

RELEASE: In a Harry for new Potter book
TEENAGER Jacob Wilson will be the envy of Harry Potter fans everywhere when he becomes one of the first people in the country to get his hands on a copy of the schoolboy wizard's latest adventures.
When the clock strikes midnight on July 16, Jacob will be the first to cross the threshold of Waterstone's bookshop, in Bridge Street, Peterborough, and unveil JK Rowling's newest book, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince.

Jacob (14), who lives in Beccelm Drive, Crowland, near Peterborough, and goes to Arthur Mellows Village College, in Glinton, near Peterborough, said he is delighted to win the prize to be the first in the city to get the book in a competition run by a local radio station.

He said: "The books are so gripping, so much so that when you're absorbed in one you don't even want to go out with your friends.

"I'm about the same age as Harry Potter so I've grown up with the books. Each book is bigger than the last and I've become a more accomplished reader by the time each one has been released."

According to booksellers, more adults are reserving copies of the book than ever before.

As with all the other books in the series, you can order Harry Potter And The Half- Blood Prince with a cover aimed at children and one marketed for adults.

Waterstone's has seen a 50 per cent rise in the number of orders since the last instalment of the record breaking series two years ago.

The shop has pre-ordered about 500 copies. Many of these will find their way into the eager palms of grown-ups.

Branch manager Anna Elmore, who describes herself as, "possibly the world's biggest Harry Potter fan", said: "The excitement is bubbling up for the next instalment of the Harry Potter series.

"The adult covers have been very popular – I think grown-ups get a bit embarrassed about reading a children's book.

"Books like Harry Potter which appeal to both adults and children are beginning to form a new genre, which is really going to take off in the next few years."

WH Smith, in Bridge Street, has made a staggering 1,000 orders of the new book.

Store supervisor Joanne Medcalf said: "We are expecting more orders in the fortnight leading up to the launch of the book, and our pre-order number is slightly up on last year.

"I think parents are ordering the book for their children, but we have had lots of orders for the adult cover of the book."

Peterborough City Council revealed it had ordered 25 hard back copies for its libraries and already there are 55 people on the waiting list to borrow them.

In Cambridgeshire, all the copies which have been ordered by the county council libraries have been reserved by readers anxious to get their hands on a copy on the first day.

Now in a bid to meet the expected continuing demand, the service is increasing the number of the new books ordered to more than 100.

Magic words in the dictionary

HARRY Potter has also made it into the dictionary.

Phrases coined by JK Rowling, such as lounging around insolently, haphazardly or malevolently, have made it into the Oxford Primary Dictionary, a book aimed mainly at youngsters.

To explain words, it has used extracts from the Harry Potter series: "Insolent – adjective – meaning very rude and insulting," says the Oxford Primary Dictionary.

Then it quotes from The Prisoner of Azkaban: "Malfoy gave Professor Lupin an insolent stare, which took in the patches on his robes and the
dilapidated suitcase."

Harry Potter gives Grayson County residents a sixth reason to celebrate

By Jerrie Whiteley
Herald Democrat

It's a book so popular that the police have had to get involved to keep factory workers from stealing copies and leaking facts to the press, and it goes on sale July 16. What book is that? Why, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," of course.

The sixth book in the seven-book series comes out July 16, and area stores are planning gobs of fun things for readers to do while they to get their hands on the continuing adventure of the young wizard.

More than 10 million copies of the 672-page book have been printed and will be available to readers of all ages.

"We will sell about 50,000 copies per hour in the first 24 hours," Barnes & Noble CEO Steve Riggio told CNN. "Less than 1 percent of all books sell that many in their lifetime."

Locally, the area's newest bookstore Books-A-Milion plans to have a midnight release party for those J.K. Rowling fans who just can't wait to get their hands on the newest Potter book.

The store will have Harry Potter trivia contests and crafts sessions.

"They're (going to make) wizard hats," said General Manager Kenny Glatt. He said the festivities will start at 9 p.m. on the 15th and will continue until the books go on sale at one minute after midnight.

"We will stay until the last customer has their book."

Glatt said what started as a children's franchise has really become a "family book" with adults making up a large percentage of the buyers. "And they are buying it for themselves."

Locally, those adults, and their younger counterparts, can find festivities at a couple of stores.

At Hastings in Sherman, Krista Schnitker said her staff is eagerly expecting the midnight release party.

"Several of them read the books (themselves) and they are in charge of the costume contests," Schnitker said. She said the store will also have a trivia contest with prizes. But, the real prize that night is the book.

She said the store has pre-sold around 50 copies so far but is expecting that number to go up as the publication date draws closer.

"Last time, we sold about 300 copies of the book (early)," Schnitker said. She said she expects the enthusiastic crowds to gobble up this edition of the Potter series just as quickly and eagerly.

Although they won't be holding a midnight release party, the staff at WaldenBooks in Midway Mall is equally excited about the events they have planned for July 16.

"We have never done anything on this scale before," said Store Manager Sonya Coleman. She said the bookstore, in conjunction with Spencer's, is taking over the store next door.

"It will be decorated like a Harry Potter castle," said Coleman. Her store will actually have two different parties. The first will start at 8:30 a.m. and go until 10 a.m. for the "kidgits" group sponsored by the mall.

Then the party will start at noon for the general public and run until 2 p.m.

"We want to encourage kids to come dressed as their favorite Harry Potter character and get involved in all the activities," Coleman said. She said the party will feature around 22 stations that will allow children to take part in activities such as face painting, mask making and other crafts. There will also be a trivia contest. Coleman said the general public can begin buying the book at 8:30 a.m.

Wal-Mart in Sherman has been pre-selling the book and plans to start selling the book just after the midnight hour.

"We will have a big television playing Potter movies," said Manager Donny

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

"... The Dementor's Kiss. One can only imagine what that must be like to endure. It's said to be nearly unbearable to witness. But I'll do my best." Severus Snape to Sirius Black ("Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" – 2004)

The adventures of Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) continued in 2004's "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". Harry's third year at Hogwarts found the young wizard fleeing from his Uncle Vernon (Richard Griffiths) and Aunt Petunia's (Fiona Shaw) home after an altercation with Vernon's sister, Marge (Pam Ferris). Add to the mix the possibility of escaped prisoner, Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) coming after Harry and the introduction of Professor Lupin (David Thewlis), the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher with a mysterious secret and you're set for a magical adventure. Get your wands ready and look for these movie oops!

Where Did The Book Go?

Each of the students is carrying a copy of the "Monster Book of Monsters" while they're walking to Hagrid's (Robbie Coltrane) Care of Magical Creatures class. Watch the book that Ron is carrying especially during the scene when Harry is approaching Buckbeak. The book that Ron is carrying in his left hand in some shots has vanished in others.

Was He Just Sitting There?

Hagrid is standing in the lake telling the trio that Buckbeak is going to be executed. During the scene, Harry is sitting against a rock in the background. At one point you see him (in the background) get up and walk away from the rock, standing closer to the edge of the water. But, in the next shot from behind, Harry is once again against the rock.

It's a Little Stringy

When Harry sees Peter Pettigrew's (Timothy Spall) name on the Marauder's Map, he leaves his dorm room and tries to track him down. He's soon caught by Professor Snape (Alan Rickman). During the scene, keep a close eye on Harry's shirt, particularly the strings that hang down. At times the two strings fall straight down. In other shots, the string on Harry's right is crossed over the left one.

It's a Double Take

You'll have to keep a quick eye on two scenes to get this one. The first one is when Harry, Ron and Hermione, flee from Hagrid's hut after Dumbledore (Michael Gambon), Cornelius Fudge (Robert Hardy) and the Executioner (Peter Best) arrive. The trio run behind pumpkins and stop. When Hermione hears something she turns around to see what it is. You'll see that she turns back around in a counter clockwise motion and they run off. When Hermione and Harry go back in time, they watch the same scene unfold while they're hiding in the forest. Hermione once again hears something and turns around. However, instead of turning counter clockwise before running off, you'll see that she turns clockwise.

From Book To Film: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
There's no denying that the Harry Potter franchise has been a literary phenomena. So far the five (and impending sixth) book have yielded three blockbuster movies with a fourth set to be released in November. The third film installment, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" was the first in the series to be directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Are there any differences between the book and film? What are some things you may want to know if you haven't read the book before seeing the movie?

Warning! If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, you may want to turn back now! This may contain information that only a magic spell will be able to wipe from your memory!

Sirius on the Lam

Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) had been in Azkaban, the wizard's prison guarded by Dementors, for thirteen years when he suddenly escaped. How did he get out? While the movie detailed the fact that Sirius was in prison, the book gave more detail on his ability to escape. Since the Dementors are more sensitive to human emotion, he was able to transform into a dog and walk out.

A Mind Set on Revenge

How was Sirius able to track down Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall)? Ron (Rupert Grint) showed Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) the newspaper article about the Weasley trip to Egypt. In the book, Sirius explained that he was able to get a copy of the newspaper from a person who made a visit to Azkaban. When he saw the rat in the family photo, he immediately knew who it was.

How Did He Know That?

Professor Lupin (David Thewlis) lectures Harry after Professor Snape (Alan Rickman) finds him in the hallway at night with the Marauder's Map. But how did Lupin know the paper was a map? Simple! He was "Mooney"; one of the four people who helped to make the map. Which leads us to…

Who Was Padfoot, Prongs and Wormtail?

Since Lupin was a werewolf, each of his three closest friends decided to become an animagus to keep him company. Padfoot and Wormtail was the code name for Sirius and Pettigrew, respectively, because of their animal counterparts. James Potter (Adrian Rawlins) would become a stag, which explains two things: the identity of Prongs and the importance of the stag shape of Harry's patronus!

How Does Snape Figure Into All This?

Two questions about Snape's involvement keep surfacing. How did he know everyone was in the Shrieking Shack and why does he dislike Sirius? While they were students at Hogwarts, Sirius played a joke on Snape which could have resulted in him being killed by Lupin when he was a werewolf. James Potter saved him. Snape, who has known about Lupin's condition since then, saw the Marauder's Map on Lupin's desk when he went give him his potion for the night and went in pursuit.

Were There Any Changes From the Book?

In the movie, Harry received the Firebolt broomstick at the very end. The Firebolt, however, arrived earlier in the book. Harry received the Firebolt as a Christmas present. Since the person who sent it was unknown at the time, the broomstick was confiscated so it could be checked for spells. It was returned to Harry later in the year.

Tales of a Shrunken Head

Harry is picked up by the Knight Bus when he leaves the Dursleys after the altercation with Vernon's (Richard Griffiths) sister Marge (Pam Ferris). In addition to Stan (Lee Ingleby) and Ern (Jimmy Gardner), the movie also had a talking Shrunken Head. While most people were split on whether they liked or disliked the Shrunken Head, it was never mentioned in the book.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling tops list of bestselling writers

NEW YORK (AP) - J.K. Rowling tops the list. Dan Brown is ranked very high. William Shakespeare just missed out.

It's Amazon.com's top 25 bestselling authors. The online retailer, celebrating its 10th anniversary, announced its biggest sellers Thursday, with Rowling no surprise at No. 1. The Harry Potter author was followed by Spencer Johnson of Who Moved My Cheese? fame, romance novelist Nora Roberts and The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown.

Rounding out the top 10 were Dr. Seuss, John Grisham, Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien, Left Behind novelists Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins and business writer Jim Collins.

Shakespeare was No. 26, one notch below Tom Clancy

Pre-release bash -- Whether by 'floo powder or broom,' Potter fans will converge on mall

By RICHARD WALKER, T&D Staff Writer

RICHARD WALKER
With only a week left before the release of J.K. Rowling's latest Harry Potter installment, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," Waldenbooks in the Prince of Orange Mall is the site for a book release and celebration party to gear up for next Saturday. LARRY HARDY/T&D

At the Quidditch World Cup, witches and wizards began Apparating long before the first Quaffle was thrown.

And Saturday, Muggles may need a Memory charm at the sight of witches and wizards Apparating earlier than usual inside the Prince of Orange Mall for what has become the annual Harry Potter Celebration.

While the latest J.K. Rowling creation, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," won't be released for another week, local festivities are being held tomorrow from 11 a.m. until the last wizard Disapparates from the mall, which is being magically transformed into a virtual Diagon Alley.

"We actually wanted to split it up, there was so much chaos," Waldenbooks manager Tabbetha Williams said of what was in years past a combined book release and celebration party. "And then next Saturday, we can focus on the book."

In addition to Apparating, portkeys, floo powder, a broom — or perhaps to fit in with Muggles, a car — are acceptable modes of transportation, mall officials say, to join in the festivities that will begin with a costume contest at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

"I'm very excited about teaming with Waldenbooks," Prince of Orange Mall property manager Sylvia Krajna said. "I'm also looking forward to getting my copy" of the new book.

No Muggle coins are needed to participate in the costume contest, other activities or for the light refreshments like those at Honeydukes, Krajna said.

With Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall a bit preoccupied locating another Defense Against the Dark arts teacher, local magician Russell Anderson will be in charge of "Spells and Illusions 101," with participants being invited later to compete for the title of "Master Wizard."

Following Anderson's class, a man some say could be related to Hagrid will be available for autographs. "The Barbarian," thought to be one of the few remaining giants and a wrestler with the CWA Pro-Wrestling Association, will be at GNC from 1 to 3 p.m. for signings.

At the release of the last Harry Potter adventure ("The Order of the Phoenix," 2003), Waldenbooks had ordered 500 copies for initial release that served as a focal point for a mall-wide party attended by hundreds.

"The Order of the Phoenix" set a worldwide record for the most copies sold in a single weekend at 8 million books. This go-round, the local book store has notified Flourish and Blotts they'll need more copies to handle the reserved list and walk-ins.

"We've ordered extra," Williams said.

"I don't know how many are on the list, but we did order extra."

A rising 10th-year at Edisto High School, Shane Barber says he's on that list. Not only does he have the five predecessors to "HP and the Half-Blood Prince," he said, but a few knick-knacks to boot — a Wizard's chessboard, the soundtrack CDs, calendars, action figures, posters and the like.

"I'm real excited about the new book. I just know it's going to be cool if it's anything like the ones before it," Barber said. "All the books and movies are cool, but I'm looking forward to finding out who the Half-Blood Prince is."

As to any ideas as to who the Half-Blood Prince may be, Barber's guess leans toward "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named!"

While activities at the Prince of Orange Mall begin Saturday at 11 a.m. in center court, the latest Rowling adventure will not be sold before its release date of July 16.

The books have not arrived in Orangeburg yet, Williams said, and a delivery date is under the tightest security out of a fear of Dark Wizards lurking about.

'Potter' plans in the works
By Rachel Morris
Friday, July 8, 2005

With the upcoming release of the sixth Harry Potter book now only a week away, the anticipation surrounding this magical fantasy is mounting wherever books are found - even at the local library.
In order to celebrate the release of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince," the Morse Institute Library will hold a midnight release-party on July 15. And they are not alone.

According to a press release issued by the publishers of the book, Scholastic Press, more than 5,000 stores across the country will hold a midnight party to celebrate the 12:01 a.m. July 16 release date of the book

Laurie Christy, who works at the Morse Institute Library in Natick, thought a similar event at the library would be exciting.

"In the past, the Harry Potter books are so incredibly popular and eagerly awaited by everybody," Christy said. "Kids are waiting in line for this book to come out. We thought it would be fun if we could get them together beforehand."
This party for "Muggles" will feature a magician, trivia contests, food, and prizes for the best costumes. The Morse Institute will be open unusually late this night because it, and every other library and bookstore across the nation, are forbidden from displaying or selling the book until the actual release date of July 16. Therefore, the festivities will commence at 10 p.m. and conclude at 12:30 a.m.
"On the stroke of midnight we can bring out the book. At that point we would be able to show the book and read from the book," Christy said.
Borders bookstore on Worcester Rd. in Framingham will be holding a midnight release party as well, consisting of crafts and other mystical merriment. As soon as the clock ticks 12 a.m. "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" will go on sale. Luke Sampson, the bookstore's general manager, mentioned that the last Harry Potter release party brought a sizeable crowd into the bookstore.
However, although fans are currently more than willing to come out in droves at midnight to ensure that there are no delays in reading the book, can the success of this series continue for much longer

Natick High School students Emily Anderson and Natalia Nodif believe that it will.
"It seems like every year it escalates, the popularity. It can never fall back," said Nodif, a Natick High Senior who believes the Harry Potter books will follow the path of J.R.R Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," and be adored for years to come.
Anderson, a Sophomore, agreed.
"People are just taking off on the book," she said.

Both girls have been fans of the books for seven years, and Anderson's tee-shirt reveals that the hysteria does not end upon reaching the last page of a Harry Potter book.

Her shirt reads, "Harry and the Potters," which refers to the band from Norwood whose songs are based on events which occur in the Harry Potter books.

While the excitement over Harry Potter extends into the realms of music, movies, and merchandise, such as Harry Potter jelly beans, chess sets, and stamp collections, Anderson and Nodif agreed that the books are what keep people coming back for more Potter.
"A lot of kids like it because they can relate to the book, and can relate to the character," Nodif said.
The passion for the series is showing no signs of waning.
Unless you are first in line at the bookstore on July 16 or have already preordered a copy, you might have to use a little wizardry yourself to obtain "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince," British author J.K. Rowling's latest addition to the beloved series.
According to a Scholastic Press Release, more than 600 trucks will ship 10.8 million copies of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" nationwide in preparation for the biggest book release in history.
However, despite the massive amount of copies to be distributed, Sampson said he advises Potter fans to pre-order the book if they want a copy in their hands on July 16.

Potter secrecy a plot in itself
Anna Hodgekiss and Nick Leys
July 09, 2005 THE secrecy leading up to the latest Harry Potter release is almost as intriguing as the plot.

The world must wait for British clocks to tick over to 12.01am on July 16 before Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is available, the sixth book by JK Rowling. Embargoed until 9.01am in Australia, stockists have signed a contract promising to remain tight-lipped about the existence, quantity and whereabouts of the sought-after Potter books. Once copies arrive at stores next Wednesday, they will be moved to a secure area, remaining sealed and untouched until release time next Saturday. "It's an extraordinary set-up, and one we only see with Harry Potter books," said one Sydney retailer who did not want to be named and risk reprisals from the publisher.

< =1.1 src="http://ad.news.com.au/js.ng/site=theaustralian&section=arts&adsize=300x250&pagepos=1">
"But as crazy as these measures sound, they worked last time and no one got hold of a copy early." It seems that Harry has far from lost his magic for young readers. "Very, no, triply very excited," said eight-year-old Oliver Muscatello of Newtown in Sydney about the pending release. "Quadruply very excited." Oliver and his sister, Isabel, 10, can hardly wait for the magic to return. They will be at the bookstore at 9.01am when the book is released and will buy a copy each so there are no arguments over who will read it first. And yes, said Isabel, it would be a race to finish it first. "They just make you feel there really is a place called Hogwarts," she said. "You start to think maybe it's true and just maybe when you turn 11 you might get chosen to become a wizard." The number of advance orders at Dymocks has doubled from the last book released in 2003, The Order of the Phoenix. "We have taken tens of thousands of reservations, which are showing no signs of slowing," said Dymocks CEO, Don Grover. The chain is expecting more than 50,000 customers next Saturday, who will pay $29.95 a copy. Borders has also confirmed that pre-sales are up by 30per cent on 2003. "We can't compare a Harry Potter book launch to any other. There is nothing like it in the industry," said spokeswoman Tara Woodfull.

The Half-Blood Prince follows Harry, Ron and Hermione in their penultimate year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
