Chapter 8

Payal started reading the book and grew more and more interested as she advanced. It was a short autobiography that Lajo had written. The author's note read that the names of the characters had been changed.

...

My life wasn't as smooth as I supposed it to be. Happiness, pleasure, Fun, bliss was what I thought it was, as a child. Being an author had been my dream ever since my childhood, but I wasn't sure if I would ever be able to fulfill it.

I was the only child in our small little family of three. Having no siblings made me feel lonely at times but it had both advantages and disadvantages. Parents pay all their attention to the one child. The only child always gets pampered a bit more and so did I. But then there was this guy who I had known since my childhood. He had always been my best friend. Never did he make me miss having siblings. Our friendship grew stronger as we grew up. It was because of him that I was able to take up writing as my career. He was my inspiration to write.

I was at the seventh sky when my first book got published and with that book, came in lots of happiness. My parents were as happy as I was. They were so contented that my Father took my book to every house in the neighborhood and told them that his daughter has written it, his daughter was an author now!! Seeing such extreme love brought tears to my eyes. I used to feel as if I was the luckiest girl on this planet earth. Only lucky people get such loving and supportive parents. They let me do everything and anything I liked.

Publication of my first book not only brought happiness to my family, but to a very special person too.

It was after the publication of my first book that he confessed his feelings. I couldn't contain myself. I was extremely happy and contented.

But then destiny started showing what it had in store for us. His mother hated me and everything that I did. According to her I was a hindrance in Ajay's path to success. We tried our level best to convince everybody in the family and finally they did. It was the happiest day of my life. I still remember how it felt getting engaged to the person I loved, or maybe love the most.

It was after our engagement that the true colors of people started showing. Both Ajay and I got busy with our lives. We started struggling for success. He moved to London to handle his father's 2nd business while I started writing more of fictional works and contacting different publishing houses. 2 years passed by like a blink of an eye. We both were settled then. I had become quite famous as a lot people loved what I wrote. It was then that my parents spoke to his family about our marriage. His family didn't seem very interested at the time but they agreed when Ajay insisted.

Everyone started with the preparation of the wedding. My parents wanted to marry their one and only daughter with utmost and best preparations.

My dresses were being ordered from the best of the designers and so was my jewelry, although I was a simple girl and loved simplicity. My parents didn't leave a stone unturned to fulfill what I wanted and to make me happy, but not everything is in their hand.

My in-laws arranged a number of events and invited us in all. They wanted all the events to take place at their home, because according to them, out status wasn't even enough to serve their guests well and they didn't want to insult their visitors. My parents obviously didn't like this attitude of theirs but let it go anyways. All they wanted at that point of time was the happiness of their daughter.

It was our sangeet night and as usual, I and my parents had to go to Ajay's place for the event. Our clothes, jewelry and makeup artist was all provided by his family, although my parents wanted me to wear what they bought. Ajay's mother disliked my parent's choice and so gave another dress to me to wear. I wasn't happy with this behavior of her. Obviously just as any other child, I too couldn't stand my parents being insulted.

Guests started coming in and slowly the hall got filled up all with people waiting for the bride and bridegroom.

I was all ready waiting in the guest room upstairs to be called and then came rushing in a group of girls to take me downstairs into the hall.

I saw mother-in-law's face as I came down. She was shocked; shocked to see me in the dress that my parents bought and not the one that she gave.

My parents stood there with a wide smile on their face.

It was all loud there. Songs were playing, young girls and guys were dancing and the henna artist was doing her job on my hands.

My eyes were constantly searching for Ajay, but he remained missing. As soon as the aritst finished applying mehendi, i rushed to a corner to call him but his Phone was unreachable. Before i could try again, a man came running towards me and tripped over me. I pushed him away. He then, to my surprise, gave me a letter and asked me to read it as soon as possible.
