55. When The Time Comes
Days began to pass and life returned to normal. Almost. Work was back on in full swing and yet, I found myself zoning in and out of work mode even during meetings with the heads. Especially during meetings with the heads. I could not help admiring Maan for every little thing he did. I was excessively aware of his words, his actions, his gestures and everything about him. Gawking at him was not a choice anymore and I did sometimes wonder if I was going to make a fool of myself one day in front of the whole staff.
One change I noticed in him was his behaviour, especially towards me. Or so I wanted to believe. Just like a near death experience had pushed me to admit the feelings I held for him, it seemed like the same experience had made him become softer and kinder. He had become more helpful and I rarely got to see the arrogant and rude MK that he was while working, and the few times that I did witness the pre-storm persona of his, it wasn’t directed at me, which did make me feel a little special. At moments like these, I thought to myself whether he noticed any changes in me, or whether he knew I stared at him more often than not, or how affected I was by him. Those were the questions only time would answer. I was, however, undeniably aware of the fact that my feelings for him got deeper and deeper with every passing day.
Anaya could not make the phone call on the night of the party as I had predicted. Interestingly, she could not even call for more than a few minutes for the next few days as she was hosting a few guests at her place, due to which her free time had reduced exponentially. She did, however, state in every phone call she made that she could not wait for the day she would be able to finally extract some answers from me. I always laughed it off but I knew the day would come soon enough and I felt ready for it.
Raya was busy in her own life too, although we did meet frequently. I had a great time with her when she stayed over at my place for the weekend and it actually helped calm her anxiety down. Raunaq and I worked as a team to make her easy about my presence and to forget what we had experienced recently. I could see that it was finally beginning to bear fruit as Raya relaxed a lot, even though we talked over the phone multiple times a day.
The next Friday while I was rushing through my morning routine, eager to get to work as I had been for the past few days, the doorbell rang. It was unusual because I did not normally expect visitors at this time. Looking through the peep hole, I became anxious and quickly unlocked the door, hoping everything was fine.
“Thank goodness, you’re still home!” Anaya barged in, sighing in relief.
“Is everything alright?” I asked worriedly. “What are you doing here so early? And where’s Ayush? And what about the kids?”
“Relax Geet!” She rolled her eyes and shut the door, pulling me inside by my wrist. “Why do you always think something must have gone wrong to do things out of routine?”
“Well...” I said, “I don’t know why. But you don’t mind telling me why you’re here this early, do you? I’m getting a little anxious here.”
“Okay, okay! Come sit with me.” She plopped down on the couch and patted the space beside her, which I slowly sat on, all the while eyeing her suspiciously. She sighed. “It feels so good to finally be able to get time for myself.”
“Anaya...”
“Hey!” She said, a little offended. “I’ve been going crazy this past week with the guests and all. On top of that, managing the kids isn’t ever an easy task. So cut me a little slack, will you?”
I instantly felt remorseful.
“Anyway, I just dropped the kids to school and Ayush is off to work. And not to forget, the guests finally left yesterday. So, yay!” She squealed with a huge smile on her face.
I chuckled. “Well, good for you.” Looking at my watch, I got up from my place and walked to my open kitchen. “You want some breakfast? I was just going to fix something to eat before I left.”
“Breakfast would be nice.” She called after me. “But, hey, you’re not going anywhere today. You might as well change into something more comfortable.”
“What?” I whirled around. “Why?”
“Because I came to spend some quality time with you. You can’t deprive me of my friends' time, can you?” With her eyes big and round, her voice small and sweet, she could feign innocence so well.
“But I have to go to work.” I spoke from where I stood in the kitchen. “I can’t just stay at home.”
“I’m sure you can take a day off.” She said calmly, sitting comfortably on the couch as she was.
“Umm..” I thought over about it. As much as I wanted to go to work, I knew Anaya was desperate to extract all those details from me which she promised almost a week ago. I wanted to talk to Anaya too. I wanted to let things off my chest. I wanted somebody to be my secret keeper. “But what excuse am I going to make for being absent today?”
She looked at me as if I was an imbecile. “Haven’t you ever made up an excuse from work before?” I just shrugged in response. “Just call in sick. Simple.”
“Oh!” was all I could say. The thought had really not crossed my mind.
She observed me keenly with a mischievous smile on her face. “You’re not upset about being unable to see Maan, are you?”
I giggled even as a light pink hue rose up my cheeks. “A little.” I admitted truthfully. “But I’m glad you finally got the time to come.” I smiled and she ‘aww'ed as she got up from the couch and came over to give me a light hug.
“You go change into something comfortable.” She eyed my office attire. “And make that phone call to whoever you need to tell while I will fix us some good breakfast.” She began to turn away but came right back at me. “And sound convincing!”
“Yes, sir!” I laughed and went to my room. Once inside, the thought did cross my mind that I wouldn’t be able to get my fill of watching Maan today and I wondered if he would miss me, but I shook that feeling away and focused on the fact that I felt happy with Anaya’s presence and the time we were about to spend together. Quickly calling my assistant and conveying that I wouldn’t be present in the office for the day, I shot instructions to her for the tasks that needed to be done. The call did not take much of my time and I hurriedly changed into cotton pyjamas before being pulled out of the room as the tantalising aroma of omelettes and coffee reached my nostrils.
“Yum, yum!” I rubbed my hands together as I saw Anaya setting two plates on the table with a delicious looking omelette in each of them. She grinned back at me.
“I make excellent omelettes.” The pride was visible on her beaming face. “Even Ayush admits to that.”
“I’m sure he does. Where would he go if he said otherwise?” Her mouth rounded at my laughing words before she quickly agreed with me and we both laughed over it.
As we ate, we talked about her kids, the guests she’d been hosting for the past week and her plans for the weekend which would probably be projected on to the next week, which was why she was so desperate to utilise the one day she got free in between.
“So you see,” she concluded, “I’m not going to get any free time any soon again and I’m not letting go of this chance that I got today.”
“I would expect that from you.” I chuckled. “To grab the first opportunity.”
“I’d be offended if anybody else said that.” She said laughingly.
Soon enough, done with the breakfast and the clean up after it, we were sitting cross-legged on my bed and I knew she was ready to broach the topic we’d both been waiting for. I was ready to open up with her too.
“How's it been with you and Maan?” She asked with an increasing interest.
“The usual, I guess.” I shrugged. “I’m just as smitten and he’s just as oblivious.”
“Is he?” She murmured in a very low voice. It was not for me to answer but it did make me wonder. Was he really as oblivious as he showed himself to be? Did he not sense all the times I stared at him and did he not feel the difference in my attitude towards him?
She continued in a clearer voice excitedly as if she hadn’t said what made me dubious. “Tell me everything. From the beginning.”
“Beginning?” That left me thinking. “I can’t even say when it all started...”
There was a fond smile on Anaya's face as she watched me being wondrous and wide-eyed.
“Alright. Let me rephrase.” She interjected. “Tell me what happened since the beginning of this hard-hitting trip.”
“Hard-hitting!” I repeated and chuckled. “Interesting choice of words.”
“And precise, too.” She grinned proudly, knowing fully well I was at a loss of a good comeback. “But stay on the point.” She scolded. “I haven’t got all day!”
“Okay, okay!” I realised I was subconsciously stalling her. Taking a deep breath, I recalled the trip.
“I’ve already told you that Maan and I had a fight before leaving for the trip so -"
“What did you guys fight about?” Anaya threw the question on me and I fumbled for what to say. I didn’t want to lie or hide anything yet I didn’t know if I could explain. I decided to give it a try.
“Well... We were both caught off guard in rain and...” I faltered seeing Anaya's eyebrows shoot up. “It brought back some... painful memories... and he... sort of pushed me and I fell...”
“What?!” She gasped.
The look of horror mixed with anger made me quickly defend Maan. “But he didn’t do it intentionally. And he’s apologised for it.”
She didn’t speak for a few seconds so I asked in a small voice. “What are you so upset about?”
“I can’t wrap my head around the fact that he physically hurt you! How dare he does that!” She fumed. “I’m definitely going to call him to account for it.”
“No.” My voice was firm and decisive this time. “You're going to do no such thing. He did not mean to hurt me and I know he never will. It happened in a spur and he regretted it. He apologised and I’ve forgiven him.” I looked into her eyes to make sure my message was clearly understood. “This part of the story is done for. Okay?”
She looked at me in disbelief for a few moments before sighing and shrugging it off. “Fine!”
“Now, should I continue?” I asked with a small smile and it took Anaya no time to get back into mood as she shifted eagerly, her expression curious.
“Where was I?” I wondered and then recalled almost instantly. “We fought almost 2 days before leaving and I didn’t see him after that night up until we were going to check in to the hotel.”
“Wow! I wonder how he managed to stay away from you for so long!” She muttered in a low voice and I heard it but pretended not to notice.
“Anyway,” I continued “we didn’t talk even then.”
“So did he ask you out for the date after the seminar?” Her inquisitive eyes shone with delight.
“No.”
“Then when?”
“He asked me through a text message.” I told her simply. “And he didn’t call it a date. He wanted to give me an apology dinner.”
“Ooh! Clever Maan!” She snickered. “He took you out to a date and didn’t even let you think it was one.”
My cheeks flushed slightly. “Anaya, stop interfering or you’re going to lose your own time.” I warned her. “I’m not sure you can live through another few days of waiting.” I giggled as she pretended to zip her lips.
“We had a good time.” I smiled as I remembered and then saw Anaya's lips opening to speak up. “Don't!” That shut her up. “And no, there was nothing romantic to it.” She glowered. “In fact, we made a truce to be friends and not fight again that night.”
“Is that all that happened for you to be so crazily smitten?” She was disappointed.
“Of course no!” I felt offended. “He took me to the waterfall the next day. And he was a gentleman and so caring and -" My eyes fell on Anaya's face beaming as she showed the full set of pearly white teeth with a wide grin.
“Now we’re talking!” She was pleased with the progress of the story. I narrowed my eyes at her but it made no difference to her wide smile as she egged me on to speak.
Overcoming the embarrassment I felt, I started to narrate to her the peaceful time I had with Maan at the waterfall and then the late night adventure during the walk in the vast lawn of the hotel. I told her about the sudden storm, the way Maan reacted and the role I played until we got to the dome.
She was commenting on each and every thing, contrary to what she had promised but when the part of the storm came up, she got all sober. “You did the right thing by not letting him be alone. Who knows what he might have gone through if you went ahead without forcing him to come along.”
I shuddered, reminiscing the dark night. It was at that exact moment that the shrill ringtone of my phone pulled us both out of the gloom. As I saw the name flashing on the screen, my heart started racing and my cheeks became warm as I felt a bubble of happiness rise in my chest. So Maan was missing me! Before I could answer, Anaya snatched it from me and answered it, putting it on speaker and signalling me to remain silent.
“Hello?” His husky voice floated out of my phone. “Geet? Are you there?”
Stifling a giggle and putting out her best serious voice, Anaya spoke. “It's me. Geet's not available right now.” My lips curved downwards on the missed chance of talking to Maan but I couldn’t contain my smile. “Did you have something important to talk about?”
“Oh, hi Anaya!” He recognised the voice at once. “I didn’t know you both were together this early in the morning.”
Anaya rolled her eyes. “Yeah, because I couldn’t bothered telling you about our girl plans.”
“What plans?” He caught on to it immediately. “Geet's assistant says she called in sick today.”
Anaya fumbled at her slip of tongue but she was a smooth talker so she covered up her slip easily. “Well, we didn’t have plans but I called her and discovered she wasn’t well so I came over.”
I snickered silently.
“Oh!” Maan sounded disappointed. “What happened to her and how is she now?”
“She's not well enough to attend calls,” Anaya grinned at me and winked, clearly enjoying the situation, “so until and unless there’s an emergency or you’re just too impatient to hear her voice, I’m not passing the phone to her.”
I blushed even as I heard Maan sputter before clearing his throat and speaking clearly. “Well, I had a couple of office issues to discuss with her but it’s fine. They can wait until she’s better.”
“Alright then. Bye!” Anaya cut the call before Maan could get another word in. “That was so much fun!” She exclaimed with a giggle.
“You are so cruel!” I chided her, chuckling.
She snorted. “I wouldn’t get my way with either of you if I wasn’t a wee bit strict.” She waved a hand dismissively before telling me to continue where I left off.
I jogged my memory back to the gloomy stadium we were stuck in.
“What was it that pushed you to this brink then, Geet?” She asked softly. “Was it the storm? Or the emotions that came with it? Or the feeling that everything was over...?
I shook my head slowly. “It was him.” Anaya frowned, not comprehending what I meant and I struggled to put it into words. “On that night, when it was just the two of us, no strings attached to the past and no promises of the future, it was the feeling that if he was there, everything was going to be fine.” Warmth settled in my heart as I spoke about it for the first time. “He was there with me... for me... he was the anchor, Anaya.” I looked at her as she gazed at me with a small smile playing on her lips. “His care, his tenderness, his subtle support, the surety that he has my back and that he’d never let me fall....” I trailed off. “Do you understand what I’m saying?” She just nodded, her chin resting on her palm as she stared at me with something akin to motherly love. “He has always been there, Anaya but I’ve been blind. I’ve been blind to the extent of his goodness and I’ve only just now been able to really see and feel... I... I... I don’t know what I’m going to do now...”
A soft giggle escaped Anaya's lips which made me look at her, puzzled as to what she found funny.
“What?”
A wide smile sprawled across her pretty face, her eyes glinting with glee.
“Finally!” She exclaimed with an unrestrained grin. “I’ve been waiting for years to hear you say all this!”
I was bewildered. “What are you talking about?”
“You two are meant to be together.”
“You think so?” I croaked.
“Do you know Ayush and I have made so many bets on when this would happen.” She blurted.
“Bets?”
“Yes. The first bet we made was years ago. You know, when Maan fell on your feet on your first day of college.”
My eyebrows shot up at this new piece of information. “What other occasions did you bet about?”
“Lots of ‘em.” She continued nonchalantly. “Like when you both became friends in college. Then when he took you on a date. Then when you came back to town all those years later.” She went on without realising how her unexpected walk down the memory lane was making me live through all of it. “On the cruise trip, we kept waiting for the spark to catch fire. Then when he hired you for ARK, we thought this is it. But then we had to make another bet when he offered you that job and then you accepted it. And then -"
“I did not know my relationship with Maan has been such a hot topic between you and Ayush to be placing bets on it countless times.” I might have had sounded a little ruder than I meant, but I had to admit to myself that I was a tiny bit offended by her revelation. She did not notice it anyway.
“Of course! How could it not be?!” She looked at me suddenly, as if remembering something. “And it isn’t just me and Ayush.” I waited with bated breath. “Even Aunty never lost hope that you and Maan would happen someday.”
My eyes grew rounder. “Aunty..?”
“Yes. She has always wanted you two to be together.”
“But...” I couldn’t formulate a proper sentence. “But... she never... I... she never hinted on it...”
“You think she would have?” Anaya asked rhetorically. “She would never have forced her wish upon her son, let alone on you.” I looked down. “Besides, she knows people better than us and she knew you both needed more time.”
It baffled me. “What do you mean?”
She inhaled deeply. “During one of the preparations for Ranbir and Zara's wedding, you and Maan were a topic of discussion. I said to her that you both would end up together sooner rather than later. But she did not agree with me.” My eyebrows scrunched. “She said, and I remember her exact words, ‘No, darling, some people take time. They need to take tiny steps to reach the ultimate destination and Maan and Geet are two such people. They are made for each other but they haven’t reached the point of realising the depth of it just yet.
The words of Maan's mother reverberated with my heart and their profoundness left me awestruck. Maybe, just maybe, now was the time for her prophecy to be realised.
