Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai: Samridhii Shukla says relatable characters make shows work today

Samridhii Shukla, who is currently playing the lead role in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, feels that television shows with relatable characters are what connect most with the audience today. She believes that stories focusing on real, imperfect characters tend to perform better on screen.

Talking about this trend, Samridhii said, “I think the shows that do well nowadays are the ones where the characters are relatable. Today, we are writing stories and creating characters who have flaws. Even if you are the hero or heroine—the main character of the show—you can still be imperfect.”

She further explained that these imperfections make the characters more human and real. Sometimes the audience reacts negatively or criticizes the decisions made by the characters, but she feels that’s a reflection of real life. “People don’t always make the right choices. That’s how real people are. And I believe flawed characters are more genuine and relatable. That’s one reason why our show is doing well,” she shared.

Samridhii also spoke about the increasing presence of influencers in the entertainment industry and how they often get quick opportunities. She pointed out that while influencers might land roles easily, what they do with those opportunities truly matters. “Their work will speak for itself. If an influencer can act well, then that’s great—they deserve to be here. But if their acting skills are not strong, then the industry may start to rethink giving them roles,” she observed.

When it comes to her personal taste in content, Samridhii prefers thrillers over romantic comedies. “If I have to choose a movie to watch, I’ll go for a thriller. I’d love to do a thriller on an OTT platform someday,” she said. However, as an actor, she’s eager to return to the romantic comedy genre. “Rom-com is something I haven’t done in a while. I miss doing comedy, and I would love to explore it again along with romance,” she added.

Samridhii's love for meaningful content and strong characters continues to shape her journey as an actor, and she hopes to take on roles that challenge and entertain both her and the audience.
