She could have been widowed again, after marrying the Canadian guy who has not been shown yet.

I also think that after Maan's father's death, Dadi may have thrown out Pammi, keeping back her grandsons Dev and Vicky. Pammi may have then married the Canadian guy and settled in Canada. Dev may be flying between India and Canada to alternatively be with his mom and his brother. On one such occassion he may have met Naintara (a Canadian) and married her. Maan may not like her as he is convinced she is a gold digger. So Dev may have moved to Canada. The three brothers could have met in India a couple of months back when there was a big fight after which Dev returned back to Canada and Maan went into the wilderness.

Wow!! That was very intellectual and the comments here are great as well. I don't have a way with words so I have not much more to say but I just wanted to comment on how that could in fact be the underlying problem. Your hypothesis is very well thought out and makes complete sense. Lets hope the CV's think along the same lines and don't stick in a random girl problem as the reason for his behavior.

He says this to Geet at one point. He also says the women put their family beofre everything and put up with a lot of nonsense instead of fighting back. He hates tears and emotional exhibition. All this made me wonder whether his mother did all these things and finally also took her life when it became unbearable.

Wonderful post!! I believe that it is about his mother...
Maan must have seen his mother going thru the same torture that he has seen about geet and that is the one thing making Maan feel connected to Geet.

Moreover fate always made them face each other even if they don't want anymore.......

Maan is seeing his MOM in GEET..and that is wht make him guiding geet, helping her and ending up loving her......Unknowingly!

I hope that this is the case. If my premise is right then Geet being there for the baby and fighting back will actually bring him closer to her because she would be different from his mother who had left her own child back and ended her life because she could not face the challenge. He will then respect Geet more and accept her with her child. It would be sad if they show a miscarriage or Geet not being pregnant at all because the crux of the story hinges on Geet and her baby. It is for that baby she cut all ties with her family. It is for that baby she is trying to be independent.

when they introduced maan's family first this is the first thought that occured to me as well.. interesting post..
will write more in detail tomorrow.. its kinda late.. n m sleepy... but shall surely share my thoughts tomorrow...!! i love replying to posts like this...

Maan's behavior clearly is an outcome of a disturbed and depressed childhood, and people tend to become like that when they grow up seeing things around them being not normal! when i first started watching the show, i thought, it could have been something about this mother having run away from home with another man and much later, for money (when he starts talking bitterly about Geet doing the same) ... he also appeared to be this guy, who generally got no attention from his parents as the mother was torn between the men she loved ( exactly the way geet would be a lil later in the story) and the father a rich man, who didnt care too much... went on to marry someone working in their house (devs mom calls maan chote saab), which means, she could have been his nanny...
another possiblity could have been that maan saw his mother falling mentally ill in front of him, not being able to take the fact that his father was flamboyant just like Dev! she couldnt help it, and took all the atyachar, and finally became mad! leaving Maan all by himself...
the fact that he lives in the out house, also indicates the fact that, Maan being the older brother would have loved his brother but wanted to punish him for the wrong, but was accused of doing it cos he was sautela, which, made him decide he would move and live without those luxuries...! Dev could have been responsible for huge business debts and lossesm which is why Dev when he talks to maan tells him, i heard the business has picked up.. hence, the only thing that maan knew since childhood, or learnt is to get things under his control, so that he could direct the way they occur.. sadly, that changed with geet walking into his life.. as she brought back to simple little things that work on emotions and sentiments... most imporantly she started showing him that letting go and loving, are not bad.. infact they are most essential...!! behind maan's resistence, there is deep insecurity... about the fact that, this may happen again... and he knows, the way it is going, he will not have the courage to gather himself once more...!!
