Main kabhi batlata nahi… Par andhere se darta hoon main maa
Yun to main, dikhlata nahin… Teri parwaah karta hoon main maa
Tujhe sab hain pata, hain na maa… Tujhe sab hain pata, meri maa
Bheed mein yun na chodo mujhe… Ghar laut ke bhi aa naa paun maa
Bhej na itna door mujkko tu… Yaad bhi tujhko aa naa paoon maa
Kya itna bura hoon main maa… Kya itna bura meri maa…
The lines and the tune keep on haunting you hours after you have come out of the theatre after watching this marvel called 'Taare Zameen Par'… You feel the hollow because the wonder-child called Ishaan has stolen your heart and taken you to some place else… He makes you laugh, he makes you sob, he makes you go back and relive all the naughty nice moments of your childhood with such an ease that you almost see your mirror reflection on the screen… And he does all that through his extremely expressive eyes, through his wonderfully enacted emotions and with very little dialogs… Darsheel Safary truly emerges as not just the best find of 2008, but he does it all to very well deserve the 'Best Actor' award for 2008! Kudos Darsheel!!
And – I think that is where Aamir Khan – the debut director emerges as the winner.. Everyone knows that he is a fab actor, but he underplays himself so subtly in the film and lets Darsheel leads from the front from the first to the final shot of the movie… He draws your attention from the very first shot of Ishaan fishing through the drains, followed by perhaps one of the best casting images in Hindi cinema ever, and by that time – the viewer is already hooked on… The movie has many special moments that involve you emotionally and make your eyes moist - the simplicity of the film is what ends up being the best thing about it. Nowhere do you feel that things are being forced down upon you, that you are emotionally manipulated to feel for the deprived (that I have personally felt in earlier films like Black), but all that you see seems the only natural flow where the movie could have done… You feel choked at quite a few places, and you turn around and see that almost the entire theatre is feeling all the same…
Coming over to the technical aspects of the film…. Kudos Amol Gupte for such a sensitive script and yet never going over the top.. I am sure you will be a happy man seeing that your script got such a fine treatment from Aamir…. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy – very very well done, for giving us one of the finest scores of your career.. The music is so brilliant that these are not just mere songs… they become moments to cherish for long! While 'Taare Zameen Par' and 'Meri maa..' touch your heart very emotionally… 'Tu dhoop hai' just transforms you to another world of inspiration… 'Jame Raho' is a very interesting composition and the stanza 'Yahaan alag andaaz hai' brings a very different texture to the entire song… To add to it all, all the songs are brilliantly picturised as well! Would also like to mention the amazing work gone by the cinematographer… The imagery used in the film is of the highest standards and would captivate the attention of 7 to 70 year olds alike… The film is so intelligently shot that in spite of its serious theme, and few characters, you will never ever feel the pace to be sluggish… The very touching 'Flip book' of Ishaan is perhaps one of the very good examples on the amount of thought that has gone behind deciding the detailed framing of the film…
As actors – Darsheel walks away with all the credits, and very rightly Aamir lets him have the credit before him even in the casting sequence… You just have to watch the movie to experience the magic that the kid creates on the screen… Aamir is brilliant as usual… he again gives a very very restrained performance, and at no point of time appears preachy… Tisca Chopra excels as Ishaan's ever supportive mom, and even she emotes so subtly, that you can almost touch her for real… The other 2 kids as Ishaan's brother Yohaan and his friend Rajan in the boarding have done very well too for the role they had… I thought a better actor could have been cast to play Ishaan's dad, was just thinking that perhaps Monish Behl would have been a good choice for the character…
I wished to collate some of my fav sequences from the film, but gosh.. as I think of it, I think I just cannot choose – the film is so brilliant as a whole! It is definitely the finest piece of work for 2008… and for me, I don't think it would be too much to say that it will find a place in the collection of Best Hindi Films made ever… !
The stars have indeed landed up on earth to touch for real and celebrate the shear magic of cinema…
