Here's My Reivew

Ok so finally today I got to watch Saawariya, and now will give my review, but I will remind the members that whatever I say about the movie is solely my opinion.

Also before I give the review, I wanted to say how many ppl came to see Saawariya. There were about 30-35 ppl, and not a single person got up in the middle of the movie to leave. So noone left the movie, because it was rubbish. Now I also want to say that the theatre that i went to is small, and plys just because it has 30-35 ppl doesnt mean that the movie was bad, because when I went to see Partner there were only 7 ppl there.

Saawariya Review

Story- As most of you know by now, Saawariya is inspired by the novel, White Nights, which is a story that takes place in a time span of 4 nights. Saawariya unfolds the story of two strangers, who meet, and over the next 4 nights their relationship graudually grows. But are they destined to be togather?
For that you will have to watch the movie. (Sorry I making this part short, because if I continue, I might end up including some spoilers.)

Sets- After seeing the sets on the big screen it just left me speechless. Words are not enough to discribe how beautiful and elegant the sets look in Saawariya. They are breath-taking, spellbounding and leave you in awe. Omung Kumar definitly deserves termendous praise for creating such ravishing sets.

Dialogues- I really loved the dialogues for the movie. They were very poetic and meaningful. And because most of the dialogues ended up rhyming, it kept the interest alive among the audience in hearing them. And I just loved the very first poetic dialouge that Ranbir says.

Background Music/Songs/Chreography- Monty debuted as a music director with Saawariya, and I must say that he has done a fabolous job with the songs and the background score for the movie. Everytime that the word "Saawariya" played in the background it sounded peaceful, funy, and just made you love it. A pleasure to the ears. And a variety of instruments were used for the background score of the film.

As for the songs, each one was perfectly places and the chreography was GREAT! My top 3 songs were all a pleasure to watch and hear on the big screen. And after watching the movie I have started liking Masha Allah, Pari and Chabeela. Jaan-E-Jaan and Thode Badhmash were just ok ok type of songs.

Performances

Zohra Sehgal- She plays the character of Lillian aka Lallipop. Zohra plays a strick landlord, who at the same time is really sweet and rocking old lady, who bye age might be old, but at heart is still very young and romantic. After seeing Ranbir, she pours all her motherly love on him and they just share a very nice bond onscreen. And I have to got to mention on thing, when Zohra says "bytch"....that was just classical, and it ended up giving me a good laugh.

Rani- After giving horrible performances in KANK and LCMD, the queen of bollywood strikes a chord with her performance in Saawariya as Ghulab. Ghulab is a very essential character in the story, who starts and ends the story of the movie, and really I totally loved Rani in this role. Her costume and hairstyle was just AWESOME, and on top of it her fab acting was like icing on the cake. In other words, if I had to comment on Ghulab in the film, then in her words I would say- I likes!

Salman Khan- Salman plays a role of a clergy and his character's name is Imaan Khan. In the first half there are some scenes between Imaan-Sakina, which were pretty average, but I must say there was one scene which I totally fell in love with. Without giving much info on the scene...I will say that the "almost kiss" between them, was shot so well and nicely, that it looked very beautiful.

I wish there was more of Salman in the film, because he definitly left me there wanting more of him.

Sonam Kapoor- Before commenting on her character/acting, I have to say that Sonam is an extremely gorgeous girl, and she looked very beautiful in the film.

Sonam plays the character of Sakina, the girl who waits every night, with tears in her eyes, eagerly looking to see when her lover will return. I was sort of disappointed with Sonam's acting. I mean when she laughed it was reall annoying, because it sounded really fake. And at time I couldnt every differentiate whether she was crying or laughing. Her expressions were pretty good and up to the mark, and at times she did deliver the dialogues pretty well. But overall she was strictly just average.

Ranbir Kapoor- The show stealer of the movie and a star in the making!

Ever since Ranbir Kapoor was first shown in promos, I never considered him good looking, hot, cute or any of that, but after watching the film, I must say the guy definitly is a charmer. A total ladies' man and a complete romantic which any girl would want to date. And these are the qualities which Ranbir perfectly brings into his character of Ranbir Raj Kapoor, and you just cant help but fall in love with him.

Expectations were very low from Ranbir, since from the promos he didnt seem as if he would end up giving a good perfromance, but I am glad he proved everyone wrong. Saawariya, being his first movie, he has done full justice to it, given an outstanding performance and he marked a great debut for himself!

He delivers his dialogues with ease, yet with confidence. The timing of some of the jokes were pretty good. When he laughed, it brought a smile on your face. When he cried, the pain was evident in his eyes. When he was in love, all one can say is "aww".

Besides his acting, dialogue delivery and expression, I gotta admit, Ranbir is one hell-of-a great dancer!

When Kaho Na Pyar Hai had released, I was ten at the time, and had very little knowledge about films. But at that time what made me fall in love with Hrithik was his dance to Ek Pal Ka Jeena song. Damn i fell head over heels for the guy, because he danced so greatly yet made it seem so effortless.

And I want to say the same for Ranbir. I was already in love with the Saawariya title track, ever since the song promo had released, but after seeing Ranbir dance to it, I fell in love with it all over again. And I really loved and enjoyed watching how the chreographer mixed today's modern dance with the dance from the Raj Kapoor era.

Director

Shakesphere once said "whats in a name?" But for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, his name says it all. The guy has got the vision to capture beauty and present it in such a way in his films that audience can't help but praise him for his brilliance. I mean really how many directors can make "dusting rugs" look visually beautiful. Every SLB movie has been beautiful, last time he gave us a movie that only showed one color, BLACK, and now with Saawariya he has officially made BLUE the new color for love. Not only does SLB get a 10/10 for vision, but his ear for music is also worthy of praise. I don't think there has been a single SLB movie, with whose music I was ever disappointed with. From Khamoshi all the way to Saawariya, one can always expect great quality music from an SLB movie. As for his direction I have always said that SLB is one of the finest directors in India, and is a whole class apart from the other directors. I will also like to add that SLB should be applauded for his committment towards the newcomers and giving them 2 yrs of his time, in grooming them and transforming them into actors.

So, why doesn't Saawariya work?

Ok, so now many of you might be thinking that I have praised Saawariya immensely, and have hardly, if any, given any negative comments. Well that is because now I am going to express my point of view to why I think why Saawariya might not work.

To begin with I think the critics bashed Saawariya mainly due to its story, but ming you I am not going to say that the story is utterly rubbish or horrible. The problem with the story is that its too simple, actually it's SLB's most simplest story till date; and because the story is soo simple it's below the high expectations of what the audience had probably expected of SLB, and the simplicity and innocence of the story does sort of get lost admist the extravagant sets and meledious music.

*Before I continue any further, I want to first address some of the questions that were pointed out by Taran/Memebers/Reviewers:

1.) What era does the story take place?
Not that it matters, but since it was asked, it takes place in the 18th cent.

2.) What is the place's name, where the movie is shot?
Again a pretty silly questions, and those who asked it (ahem Taran), probably didnt do enough research. But to clarify, Saawariya has been shot using only sets, as SLB wanted to create an enternal love story in faiy tale style.

3.) There are too many songs in the film!
True! But if you had only used a little bit of common sense, it wouldn't really havent taken a genius to figure out that Saawariya is a "MUSICAL" love story, therefore 8 songs being in the film is quiet reasonable. (DUH!)

4.) Why did Rani not let Ranbir enter her house?

Now this question was asked by the very popular critic, Taran, and I hate to say this, but I really have the feeling that he went to the screeing of Saawariya, already hating and therefore didnt even make the slightest effort in trying to watch the movie. Because Rani LOUDLY states in the film to why she didnt let Ranbir in her house.

5.) Salman's character is too confusing!
Yes, his character is confusing, and that is due to all the editing that has been done to his role. I am sure if his role was kept for the full 45 mins as he was promised then we would have gotten a much better idea of Salman's character and more chemistry between Sonam and Salman.

Now continuing on what I was saying earlier, I think the problem isnt really with the movie itself. The movie has a pretty good storline, but because the story is told mostly through the songs rather than dialogues, that is what ended up causing the confusion and problem. Our Indian audience is soo used to the story being told through dramatic and inetense dialogues, and they could not make themselves listen to the story being told through the songs. A majority of people saw/noticed that there are many songs int he film, but they failed to notice that each song had music which expressed the character's feeling and lyrics which explained the situation and brought the story forward.

So from my point of view there really isnt anything wrong with the storyline, except that Salman's character was half-baked. SLB tried the technique of creating a musical love story, which would be the first of its kind in bollywood, and he did a pretty good job with it, but a majority of people failed to understand the real purpose of the movie and the significances of the songs. Personally looking at Saawariya from a musical love story perspective, then SLB has done a pretty fine job with it, and atleast the guy has the guts to try something new in bollywod.

So overall I liked Saawariya, and if you go watch Saawariya, don't watch it thinking it will be a love story. NO!....Because Saawariya is a musical love story.

well, i have just come back after watching saawariya and i seriously cannot understand why people are not liking it. it was such a beautiful film that i did not want it to end.
the show stealer is ranbir kapoor which is rather obvious. he has such a strong emotion on his face throughout the film that makes you fall in love with him and thats not the only thing, his looks, style, innocence and his brilliant acting. SLB has found some talent here!
sonam is absolutely gorgeous. she is good in her part and the chemistry between her and ranbir is awesome.
rani is as usual mind-blowing. salman is wasted, his 10 minute role is depressing.
this is defenitely one of the best love stories that i have seen in my life. there are many scenes in the film which make you cry, especially those in which sakina is endlessly praising imaan and raj just looks at her helplessly. you just wish that salmaan had not come back in the end and destroy that beautiful moment. there is a raw passion in raj's eyes for sakina.
the critics have absolutely bashed it. some of them are really biased. after reading them i felt as if they had set their mind against the film. it is not constructive critisism at all because of which many people are not going to watch it.
i hope this film picks up and becomes a hit. hats off to SLB for making such a beautiful film.

Thank you for your review, this and a few back reviews have really changed my mind, i think critics are being too harsh on this film, just like they were doing previously to LCMD😕. Afetr reading so many negative reviews i was kind of put off from the film, but now im assured again😃

Ok guys these are my thoughts on Saawariya, Its not exactly a review but what I felt after second viewing, many of the things I never understood in first viewing I got in second viewing.

Slb made Rani narrate the story of Saawariya because that was the name given to Raj ( Ranbir) by her and also because otherwise there would have been too much of Ranbir and by this Slb could give the film a fairy tale setting.

Now the sets are doused in hues of blue and green because Rani is narrating the story of Raj who is a Saawariya ( meaning Lord Krishna)who gives people what they have yearned for their entire lives. He gives Rani the respect she never had, Zohra the son she longed for etc. Now Saawariya is the story of Raj, all other characters take secondary importance to him.

It is a love story alright but not of Raj-Sakina but it is about Raj's innocent love for Sakina and Sakina's innocent love for Imaan.

Since Rani is narrating the story, she only knows things which Raj has told her. Now what is shown of Sakina in the film is how Raj had described Sakina to Gulab, who is she, what she does is not important here and Gulab anyway wouldn't know that because Raj had told her nothing about it. This is how she saw Sakina through Raj's eyes.

About Imaan, again Rani had never met him, so she knew Imaan only through Raj and Raj knew him through Sakina and interpreted Imaan to be a kind of an illusion, as in Sakina chasing a dream, so that is what Imaan is to Gulab as well, now what he does??, where he goes??, why he returns after a year?? etc maybe Sakina knew but Raj never asked any of this to her, so it wasn't shown.

About the Climax,it had to be the way it is because that is all that Gulab knows, about whether Sakina felt anything during the climax, Rani does not know, hence we donot get it as viewers.

The screenplay was perfect. It doesn't have a shoot out or car chase or Holi dance every ten minutes, nor do its characters get into fights or arguments with each other every five minutes, nor are there external obstacles placed in the characters' way -- these are probably all the reasons why people keep saying "there is no story." There is plenty of story, and it was very well told. There is an emotional arc to the story, as well as to the characters.

What people complain of as "darkness" is really just again the Hollywood style of lighting, which is used to highlight the character's faces and emotions, and to reflect the mood of the story. In contrast, Bollywood lighting is almost always overbright compared to Hollywood films, because they are so intent on showing off the set decorations, the costumes, the jewelery, etc. of the stars, as all these things are looked for and copied by the audience. But Saawariya is a far less commercialized and consumerist oriented film. It is pure art, where everything is subordinate to the story and characters.

It was obviously designed as a vehicle for Ranbir, much as KHNPH was designed as Hrithik's vehicle. On the whole Ranbir carried it off well.

I also thought Sonam did equally well in the acting department, though she had a smaller character to work with. Far from alternately giggling or crying (as one unkind reviewer put it), she exhibited a range of emotions, and was consistent throughout in her characterization. I never had a doubt about what she was feeling toward Ranbir, so that the ending was no big surprise for me. For now, let me just say that, when SLB said this was a story of innocent love, he was talking of the love felt by Ranbir's character, not anyone else.

In a nutshell Saawariya is a film open to interpretation, it is what you make of it. 😃

saw Saawariya on Saturday which I would term as 'creative brilliance.' I looked over at one of my friends who thought Saawariya would be along the same lines of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, which I thought a lot of people believed it to be before watching the movie. Me, from the first time I saw the promos and articles about the movie, I knew this was not your 'typical' bollywood 'masala' movie. There will be many movies with all the masala but very few like Saawariya.

Okay so onto the movie, from the very first scene to the very last, I was transfixed, hypnotized into a dream world beyond reality. I loved the blue-green colors used in the movie, these colors set the mood for the movie, however I do wish a little sunlight was used in the movie. The sets needless to say were beautiful, the bridge, the alleys, the bar together it all looked like a real town in an imaginative world.

I loved all the songs but my favorite were 'Masha Allah' and 'Saawariya.' Yes, I did feel SLB should have used fewer songs in the movie, because there were times when I felt arre there was barely a scene before another song popped up.

Although Raj's character had a lot of flesh to it, I thought Sakina needed some meat to it. There were times when I wondered whether she did feel for Raj after all or did not. Like in the end scene, she was very emotional and let herself get close to Raj but sadly went back to her lover. She did not look overjoyed to see the love she had waited for so long, instead it seemed like she went with him for the sake of the promise, the wait and the love she had felt for him.

The chemistry between Raj and Sakina was beautiful. There were times when you felt how could Sakina be with anyone else other than Raj. I liked a lot of their scenes but my favorite were when Raj and Sakina jump around trying to avoid treading on a pothole and the scene where Sakina holds Raj's hands.

I liked how all the characters had some flaws or the other. Raj isn't those maha lovers or anything he is quite human and in that sense you can reach out to him. You want to hug him because you can relate to what he's going through. When he burnt that letter you realize he isn't perfect, he is selfish but at the same time when he says he cannot look into Sakina's eyes because of this deed, he truly touches you. Throughout the movie, Raj remains in the state of being in love, experiencing love and living love. And even though the circumstances go against it, his positivity of being with Sakina never dies. Raj goes through every emotion be it sadness, joy, guilt, anger, love, respect.

Sakina on the other hand although never intentionally, in some way she did not respect Raj as much as he should get. Sakina is very stubborn yet at the same time very innocent and vulnerble. With Raj, you felt her inner side was really coming out, because with Imaan she was really sober/respectful/quiet with him.

At the very end some questions remained about Imaan and whether he truly loved Sakina but I guess his character was meant to be sort of mysterious. The line that he says 'let's get ready to live an unhappy life together'

Gulab ji had many shades to her, from a woman who found pleasure the time she was by herself to the woman who began to care and love someone else. I think the reason she rejected Raj the night he came to her asking to be her customer, was because she didn't want him to be associated with her and if together then out of love not of anything else. I wished the end scene showed her saying this was the end of the story or something along those lines.

I enjoyed the scenes between Lillipop and Raj, their scenes dripped with affection and care. I felt bad for Lillipop because in the beginning she was waiting for Vincent and in the end for Raj.

The diversity of race was another element in the movie that I appreciated..There was a christian character, a hindu character and muslim characters yet the differences didn't exist, they all were together, blended in, in unity. Which is why I liked the film even more.

A new superstar is born. Ranbir truly excedes the expectations I had for him, in every scene his emotions and expressions flow with ease in acute detail. I remember this one scene at the bridge, his character underwent many emotional changes, from joy, to shock to despair and I thought he enacted it brilliantly. He is a fabulous dancer as well, loved his flexibility in his dancing.

Sonam on the other hand is decent, in some scenes she really stands out. Sonam is very pretty and has it in her to go very far. Rani is decent in the first few scenes but then is really good in the later scenes, especially in the scene where she suppresses her emotions and tells Ranbir to get out of her house, when he tells her he wants to be her customer tonight. Salman was barely in the movie, but from what I saw how I wish he hadn't had that eye liner on, kinda indicated he was a grey character.

The movie as a whole is not for all audiences, it's for people who enjoy imagery, art and creativity. People who are romantic and enjoy touching stories this movie is for them. The pace of the movie is a bit slow, but every scene captures attention since SLB has put to perfection every detail. The way of storytelling was a bit different and I thought that added to the novelty of the film. I can't say anything about the book because I've never read it. Even though, Saawariya may not do as well as OSO, it definitely will be remembered for a long time to come.

I would rate the movie 4/5.

Keep smiling..
