Alright well I know that a lot of reviews have been posted on Saawariya and would totally understand if no one even wants to look at this one but... I still can't help but right it so here goes...

I just want everyone to keep in mind that these are my personal views and I am nott imposing anything on anyone.

It seems like a lot of the reason why one liked/disliked Saawariya had to do with the perspective with which they handled the movie.

I had read sooooooooo many reviews(bad ones!) that I was scared to go watch the movie. I mean here I am going crazy about this movie since the past so many weeks and I didnt want all of that excitement to just crash. I couldnt help but walk into the theater feeling like an inquisitor. I ended up going in there waiting for the movie to start so that I could pinpoint at all the various flaws SLB had compiled together.

As the movie started flowing though... I forgot all about that. I was inside of SLB's world in no time.

SLB did a pretty good job with the movie. It wasnt flawless but it wasnt flawful either.

According to me what went wrong with/in the movie:

1. People tried to extract a movie out of a staged play

- Saawariya is nottt a movie, and that is hard for the Indian audience to adjust to. It isnt their fault either. If I had stayed in India I probably wouldnt have, let alone watch, even read a play. They have great stories there ofcourse! but the whole theatrical play genera isn't exactly something that has been explored amongst them. It takes a little while before you get used to the Play format of story telling.

-The characters are not totally sketched out and defined. There is always a slight (or not so slight) mystery to them. Who is she? Why is she here? Where was he all this time? How was he coping? These details are usually covered pretty well in a "movie" but left open ended many times in plays.

-The subplots are not very well defined. Meaning the main story in focus, the four nights of Saawariya falling in love, being rejected, then deciding to not bum over it, will be narrated very well. But the whole where was he before? Why did he end up here? Is this his first love? not all of these questions will be answered very elaborately if at all.

So when you went to watch the movie you had to keep in mind that you were watching a Broadway Play of sorts in video, instead of an actual movie.

2. Gulabji did get too much scope. If not replacing her parts with anyone else's SLB could have just cut the movie short. I didnt notice this much while I was watching the movie, however, after coming back and having a talk with my friend I realised she was correct. Having her as a narrator = ok. Showing her every once in a while because she was one of Ranbir Raj's few support systems = ok. Showing her in every other frame... maybe SLB had something in mind... Though Rani's acting was soooooo good that I didnt even notice this much while watching the movie. 👏

3. The reason that I think Salman was shown so little was to maintain the aura of mystery around him. Just the way he was introduced to us.. black clothes.. ankhon me kaajal 😆 .. stormy night.. praying with his back to sakina.. he was supposed to be this ghostly image i think. Ghostly as in mysterious...

4. There is a certain resentment that Sonam didnt have much scope in the movie.. and I mean as a Sona fan I would totally want to see more of her side of the story... but as a character I think SLB wanted to keep Sakina the way she turned out in the movie. This girl who tricks her grandmother to come stand on the bridge every night waiting for her lover. The girl who is innocent but not naiive. The girl who is so beautiful the moon can be shy of her. The girl who Saawariya loves with more passion than he knew existed in him. This could really be looked at both ways. One way I want to think that however she was portrayed was her characterization, however at the same time I feel that her personality should have showed off as much as Ranbir Raj's was.

Nevertheless, her role was a realllyy hard one to play!! Like I would just be amazed right after the completion of a scene where she had laugh then she cried then she acted crazy then she cried then jumped around and laughed again to finish it off with the most mysterious expressions on her face. I mean.. WAH man!

Oh goodness Ive been typing so long I dont even remember what all I wrote.

The point is that I lovvveeedd this move(Play). It will definitely stay with me for a long long time. I walked out of the theater and literally could not stop ringing of Sakina and Raj's laughter. It was crazy. It was so cool.

From me great job SLB 👏 The movie might not have been perfect but.. it was sufficient. to me it was sufficient 😊

Saawariya ho ho ho ho 🥳

Saawariya ha ha ha ha 🥳

GO WATCH IT LIKE YOURE WATCHING A PLAY!!! not a movie 😉

Ok guys these are my thoughts on Saawariya, Its not exactly a review but what I felt after second viewing, many of the things I never understood in first viewing I got in second viewing.

Slb made Rani narrate the story of Saawariya because that was the name given to Raj ( Ranbir) by her and also because otherwise there would have been too much of Ranbir and by this Slb could give the film a fairy tale setting.

Now the sets are doused in hues of blue and green because Rani is narrating the story of Raj who is a Saawariya ( meaning Lord Krishna)who gives people what they have yearned for their entire lives. He gives Rani the respect she never had, Zohra the son she longed for etc. Now Saawariya is the story of Raj, all other characters take secondary importance to him.

It is a love story alright but not of Raj-Sakina but it is about Raj's innocent love for Sakina and Sakina's innocent love for Imaan.

Since Rani is narrating the story, she only knows things which Raj has told her. Now what is shown of Sakina in the film is how Raj had described Sakina to Gulab, who is she, what she does is not important here and Gulab anyway wouldn't know that because Raj had told her nothing about it. This is how she saw Sakina through Raj's eyes.

About Imaan, again Rani had never met him, so she knew Imaan only through Raj and Raj knew him through Sakina and interpreted Imaan to be a kind of an illusion, as in Sakina chasing a dream, so that is what Imaan is to Gulab as well, now what he does??, where he goes??, why he returns after a year?? etc maybe Sakina knew but Raj never asked any of this to her, so it wasn't shown.

About the Climax,it had to be the way it is because that is all that Gulab knows, about whether Sakina felt anything during the climax, Rani does not know, hence we donot get it as viewers.

The screenplay was perfect. It doesn't have a shoot out or car chase or Holi dance every ten minutes, nor do its characters get into fights or arguments with each other every five minutes, nor are there external obstacles placed in the characters' way -- these are probably all the reasons why people keep saying "there is no story." There is plenty of story, and it was very well told. There is an emotional arc to the story, as well as to the characters.

What people complain of as "darkness" is really just again the Hollywood style of lighting, which is used to highlight the character's faces and emotions, and to reflect the mood of the story. In contrast, Bollywood lighting is almost always overbright compared to Hollywood films, because they are so intent on showing off the set decorations, the costumes, the jewelery, etc. of the stars, as all these things are looked for and copied by the audience. But Saawariya is a far less commercialized and consumerist oriented film. It is pure art, where everything is subordinate to the story and characters.

It was obviously designed as a vehicle for Ranbir, much as KHNPH was designed as Hrithik's vehicle. On the whole Ranbir carried it off well.

I also thought Sonam did equally well in the acting department, though she had a smaller character to work with. Far from alternately giggling or crying (as one unkind reviewer put it), she exhibited a range of emotions, and was consistent throughout in her characterization. I never had a doubt about what she was feeling toward Ranbir, so that the ending was no big surprise for me. For now, let me just say that, when SLB said this was a story of innocent love, he was talking of the love felt by Ranbir's character, not anyone else.

In a nutshell Saawariya is a film open to interpretation, it is what you make of it. 😃

wow. . thats a very nice analysis .. i agree completly with ur view.. the beauty of saawariya is it lets u dream too like the character ranbir raj does in the movie :)

Ok so finally today I got to watch Saawariya, and now will give my review, but I will remind the members that whatever I say about the movie is solely my opinion.

Also before I give the review, I wanted to say how many ppl came to see Saawariya. There were about 30-35 ppl, and not a single person got up in the middle of the movie to leave. So noone left the movie, because it was rubbish. Now I also want to say that the theatre that i went to is small, and plys just because it has 30-35 ppl doesnt mean that the movie was bad, because when I went to see Partner there were only 7 ppl there.

Saawariya Review

Story- As most of you know by now, Saawariya is inspired by the novel, White Nights, which is a story that takes place in a time span of 4 nights. Saawariya unfolds the story of two strangers, who meet, and over the next 4 nights their relationship graudually grows. But are they destined to be togather?
For that you will have to watch the movie. (Sorry I making this part short, because if I continue, I might end up including some spoilers.)

Sets- After seeing the sets on the big screen it just left me speechless. Words are not enough to discribe how beautiful and elegant the sets look in Saawariya. They are breath-taking, spellbounding and leave you in awe. Omung Kumar definitly deserves termendous praise for creating such ravishing sets.

Dialogues- I really loved the dialogues for the movie. They were very poetic and meaningful. And because most of the dialogues ended up rhyming, it kept the interest alive among the audience in hearing them. And I just loved the very first poetic dialouge that Ranbir says.

Background Music/Songs/Chreography- Monty debuted as a music director with Saawariya, and I must say that he has done a fabolous job with the songs and the background score for the movie. Everytime that the word "Saawariya" played in the background it sounded peaceful, funy, and just made you love it. A pleasure to the ears. And a variety of instruments were used for the background score of the film.

As for the songs, each one was perfectly places and the chreography was GREAT! My top 3 songs were all a pleasure to watch and hear on the big screen. And after watching the movie I have started liking Masha Allah, Pari and Chabeela. Jaan-E-Jaan and Thode Badhmash were just ok ok type of songs.

Performances

Zohra Sehgal- She plays the character of Lillian aka Lallipop. Zohra plays a strick landlord, who at the same time is really sweet and rocking old lady, who bye age might be old, but at heart is still very young and romantic. After seeing Ranbir, she pours all her motherly love on him and they just share a very nice bond onscreen. And I have to got to mention on thing, when Zohra says "bytch"....that was just classical, and it ended up giving me a good laugh.

Rani- After giving horrible performances in KANK and LCMD, the queen of bollywood strikes a chord with her performance in Saawariya as Ghulab. Ghulab is a very essential character in the story, who starts and ends the story of the movie, and really I totally loved Rani in this role. Her costume and hairstyle was just AWESOME, and on top of it her fab acting was like icing on the cake. In other words, if I had to comment on Ghulab in the film, then in her words I would say- I likes!

Salman Khan- Salman plays a role of a clergy and his character's name is Imaan Khan. In the first half there are some scenes between Imaan-Sakina, which were pretty average, but I must say there was one scene which I totally fell in love with. Without giving much info on the scene...I will say that the "almost kiss" between them, was shot so well and nicely, that it looked very beautiful.

I wish there was more of Salman in the film, because he definitly left me there wanting more of him.

Sonam Kapoor- Before commenting on her character/acting, I have to say that Sonam is an extremely gorgeous girl, and she looked very beautiful in the film.

Sonam plays the character of Sakina, the girl who waits every night, with tears in her eyes, eagerly looking to see when her lover will return. I was sort of disappointed with Sonam's acting. I mean when she laughed it was reall annoying, because it sounded really fake. And at time I couldnt every differentiate whether she was crying or laughing. Her expressions were pretty good and up to the mark, and at times she did deliver the dialogues pretty well. But overall she was strictly just average.

Ranbir Kapoor- The show stealer of the movie and a star in the making!

Ever since Ranbir Kapoor was first shown in promos, I never considered him good looking, hot, cute or any of that, but after watching the film, I must say the guy definitly is a charmer. A total ladies' man and a complete romantic which any girl would want to date. And these are the qualities which Ranbir perfectly brings into his character of Ranbir Raj Kapoor, and you just cant help but fall in love with him.

Expectations were very low from Ranbir, since from the promos he didnt seem as if he would end up giving a good perfromance, but I am glad he proved everyone wrong. Saawariya, being his first movie, he has done full justice to it, given an outstanding performance and he marked a great debut for himself!

He delivers his dialogues with ease, yet with confidence. The timing of some of the jokes were pretty good. When he laughed, it brought a smile on your face. When he cried, the pain was evident in his eyes. When he was in love, all one can say is "aww".

Besides his acting, dialogue delivery and expression, I gotta admit, Ranbir is one hell-of-a great dancer!

When Kaho Na Pyar Hai had released, I was ten at the time, and had very little knowledge about films. But at that time what made me fall in love with Hrithik was his dance to Ek Pal Ka Jeena song. Damn i fell head over heels for the guy, because he danced so greatly yet made it seem so effortless.

And I want to say the same for Ranbir. I was already in love with the Saawariya title track, ever since the song promo had released, but after seeing Ranbir dance to it, I fell in love with it all over again. And I really loved and enjoyed watching how the chreographer mixed today's modern dance with the dance from the Raj Kapoor era.

Director

Shakesphere once said "whats in a name?" But for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, his name says it all. The guy has got the vision to capture beauty and present it in such a way in his films that audience can't help but praise him for his brilliance. I mean really how many directors can make "dusting rugs" look visually beautiful. Every SLB movie has been beautiful, last time he gave us a movie that only showed one color, BLACK, and now with Saawariya he has officially made BLUE the new color for love. Not only does SLB get a 10/10 for vision, but his ear for music is also worthy of praise. I don't think there has been a single SLB movie, with whose music I was ever disappointed with. From Khamoshi all the way to Saawariya, one can always expect great quality music from an SLB movie. As for his direction I have always said that SLB is one of the finest directors in India, and is a whole class apart from the other directors. I will also like to add that SLB should be applauded for his committment towards the newcomers and giving them 2 yrs of his time, in grooming them and transforming them into actors.

So, why doesn't Saawariya work?

Ok, so now many of you might be thinking that I have praised Saawariya immensely, and have hardly, if any, given any negative comments. Well that is because now I am going to express my point of view to why I think why Saawariya might not work.

To begin with I think the critics bashed Saawariya mainly due to its story, but ming you I am not going to say that the story is utterly rubbish or horrible. The problem with the story is that its too simple, actually it's SLB's most simplest story till date; and because the story is soo simple it's below the high expectations of what the audience had probably expected of SLB, and the simplicity and innocence of the story does sort of get lost admist the extravagant sets and meledious music.

*Before I continue any further, I want to first address some of the questions that were pointed out by Taran/Memebers/Reviewers:

1.) What era does the story take place?
Not that it matters, but since it was asked, it takes place in the 18th cent.

2.) What is the place's name, where the movie is shot?
Again a pretty silly questions, and those who asked it (ahem Taran), probably didnt do enough research. But to clarify, Saawariya has been shot using only sets, as SLB wanted to create an enternal love story in faiy tale style.

3.) There are too many songs in the film!
True! But if you had only used a little bit of common sense, it wouldn't really havent taken a genius to figure out that Saawariya is a "MUSICAL" love story, therefore 8 songs being in the film is quiet reasonable. (DUH!)

4.) Why did Rani not let Ranbir enter her house?

Now this question was asked by the very popular critic, Taran, and I hate to say this, but I really have the feeling that he went to the screeing of Saawariya, already hating and therefore didnt even make the slightest effort in trying to watch the movie. Because Rani LOUDLY states in the film to why she didnt let Ranbir in her house.

5.) Salman's character is too confusing!
Yes, his character is confusing, and that is due to all the editing that has been done to his role. I am sure if his role was kept for the full 45 mins as he was promised then we would have gotten a much better idea of Salman's character and more chemistry between Sonam and Salman.

Now continuing on what I was saying earlier, I think the problem isnt really with the movie itself. The movie has a pretty good storline, but because the story is told mostly through the songs rather than dialogues, that is what ended up causing the confusion and problem. Our Indian audience is soo used to the story being told through dramatic and inetense dialogues, and they could not make themselves listen to the story being told through the songs. A majority of people saw/noticed that there are many songs int he film, but they failed to notice that each song had music which expressed the character's feeling and lyrics which explained the situation and brought the story forward.

So from my point of view there really isnt anything wrong with the storyline, except that Salman's character was half-baked. SLB tried the technique of creating a musical love story, which would be the first of its kind in bollywood, and he did a pretty good job with it, but a majority of people failed to understand the real purpose of the movie and the significances of the songs. Personally looking at Saawariya from a musical love story perspective, then SLB has done a pretty fine job with it, and atleast the guy has the guts to try something new in bollywod.

So overall I liked Saawariya, and if you go watch Saawariya, don't watch it thinking it will be a love story. NO!....Because Saawariya is a musical love story.

Rating 4/5

OMG Rashi di..seriously all the critics need to be fired😡..you should a a true movie critic...SO beauitful.👏.yaar di I swear seriously do concider a movie critic as your profession😳😆..you can beat hypocrites and biased people like Taran and Raja anyday🤢😡

Thank you.

No rani plays a prostitute who is a friend, philosopher and guide to Ranbir's character, so no they dont marry. Rani is the narrator of the story, she infact tells in the beginning that this is a town, which you may not find anywhere in the world because it resides in my heart, thus giving it a fairy tale beginning.

You can take this whole film as a dream too, as in unreal.

Yes there are songs one too many, not all songs are good , so it does slacken the pace of the film.

This story is only about those 4-5 nights and what happens in them, its not about the life history of the characters, so we donot get much of their backgrounds except rani's, because she tells it herself. You do get their backgrounds in brief but those things are not important to the plot.

But I did feel the prostitute angle was explored a little more than necessary.Instead of this Imaan and Sakina's relationship could have been explored a little more as in Sakina telling a little more of her time spent with Imaan to Raj, that would have made things clearer and also justified the ending to the audiences far better.

I think its a nice art. Lots of people just look at the art and do not read. It is beautiful presentation. I don't know why people are saying it is bad.

I watched Om Shanti Om first as I wanted to because I wanted to have fun and laugh.. but comparing Sawaariya with Om Shanti is stupidity...

sawariya was a good movie...i knw that it was not up to our expectations..but it was'nt that bad either. some critics in india said that it was a disaster and the biggest flop of teh year. but i think it has proved them wrong as sawariya is doing far better than oso in america.ranbir kapoor is the next superstar of bollywood.... and sonam kapoor is the dark horse of the indian cinema.she will definately be the next rani mukerjee of bollywood.

overall, i liked the movie........and slb has proved that he is not only the best but the finest director in india.

omg!!!!!!!! i watched saawariya last nite and it was spellbinding! i loved it..but u do have to watch it with an open mind to fully understand it..ranbir was awesome, his eyes look so intense especially with his scenes with sonam..he is mindblowing!..sonam didnt have much to do besides smile or cry and at soemtimes she was kind of annoying but man she is gorgeous!..there are soo many scenes that are my absolute fav!

-when ranbir burns the letter
-when ranbir convinces sonam that salman aint coming and he kisses her thinking she will be his
-when rani turns ranbir down
-the least scene when sonam tells him that salman has come...this on made me cry sooooo much!!!!

i went even after reading all the neg reviews so i went in with very low expectations but it was amazing..so great that im going bac...i do admit though its not slb best and the story is stretched a bit but go just for ranbir's acting, magnificent sets, and the great songs

-karen..hope ive convinced u 😆
ps-alot of ppl said that it was too dark..its actually not that bad i didnt even notice..its actually very beautiful 😉
