Part 10

*flashback continued*

It was six months before their second anniversary. After Kanya's third miscarriage Ranbir had been extra careful with protection. He didn't want Kanya to suffer another miscarriage. It took too much out of her; it killed her mind and soul. It was just too much for her. Ranbir wanted kids but not at Kanya's expense. If he had Kanya for the rest of his life he would be happy. That was all he needed in his life, all he needed was his Kanya.

Ranbir was sitting in his study doing some work. Kanya came in and gave him his tea and just kind of hung back. She looked at him but didn't say anything. She moved towards the window and just stood there. She just stood there, with her back to him for nearly 20min. Ranbir sensed that she was tense and nervous and he couldn't take it any more. He went up behind and hugged her from the back, rested his head in the crock of her shoulder....

R- Kanya what's the matter?
K- Nothing....
R- Kanya come on, what is it, u know u can tell me anything. Come on what has u so bothered?
K- Well....ummm....i have to ask you something.
R- Ok what is it?
K- First promise me that you will keep an open mind.
R- Ok baba I promise.
K- ok...if I ask you for something will you give it to me?
R- You know I will give you everything and anything just ask and ill give you my life.
K- I...I....I want a baby.
R- Except that...you know I cant do that...i cant bare to see you go through all that again...not again...i can take it.
K- No...you don't understand....
R- What is there to understand, you want to have our baby.
K- Yes I do, more than anything, but I understand that its not possible for me to give you a child, and im sorry for that.
R- Don't be, as long as I have you I don't need anything.
K- Please just listen to me and let me finish.
R- Ok...im listening...
K- I do want a baby, I want to adopt a baby.
R- What?!
K- I know you might not like the idea but why not. We have lots of love to give a child, and there are children that need good homes which we can provide. We will be good parents. I was just....
R- Ok...
K- What?
R- Ok, I want to adopt too. I would have mentioned it sooner but I didn't now how you would feel.

That night Ranbir had seen the smile return to Kanya's face. She was thrilled at the idea of getting a baby, it didn't matter that it wasn't hers. She had so much love to give and any baby would be lucky to get it. The next day they went to the adoption agency and applied to adopt a child. It was a long and lengthy process. Ranbir wanted to do everything by the book. He had heard about families that adopted children through the black market. When authorities had found out they had taken the babies away from the families. The babies were snatched out of the hands of their parents. Ranbir knew that Kanya wouldn't be able to take that. She would be completely lost if they had finally gotten a baby only to have it taken away. It would just crush her. If it meant that they had to wait then they would, the right baby was out there for them, somewhere. They had meet a little baby boy at the orphanage that Kanya had immediately taken to. He was about 6 months old at the time they first met him. He was found abandoned and he didn't have a name for him. Kanya had taken to that tooth less smile, tiny hands and feet instantly. She had visited him regularly, and when she left it tore her up inside. She had started calling him Sonny.

Six months had passed and their case was moving slowly. It was the morning of their two year anniversary. Ranbir woke up and saw that Kanya was still sleeping. He went down stairs and with the help of Pooja Bhabi made Kanya breakfast in bed. He brought in the tray and placed in on the bed next to her. By then Aryan was in the room, as usual, the boy was attached to his Massi. Ranbir took Aryan in his arms and went to wake up Kanya. Kanya's eyes fluttered open and she say Ranbir and Aryan.

R- Happy Anniversary my darling wife.
K- Happy anniversary my darling husband. (they kiss)
R- Aryan wants to say happy anniversary to Massi too, right.
A- Happy sary Massi... (he couldn't say it right)

Kanya ate her breakfast, which she shared with Ranbir and some with Aryan. Kanya was feeling lazy and just lounged around in their room. Ranbir had gotten dressed and went downstairs. A while later he came up to see Kanya was finally ready. He came and kissed her and handed her an envelope, it was his gift to her. She said thank you and opened it. By then Ranbir turned around and was pretending to leave the room...

K-Ranbir what is this?
R- What does it look like? That's what it is.
K- Ranbir this is not funny, ill kill u if this is a gag gift.
R- Kanya this is no joke, it real. I got the letter yesterday but I thought id wait to give it to you.
K- OMG...really this is really happening...we will finally be a family.
R- Yes Kanya today we will become a full family.
K- I get to bring my Sonny home; I get to bring my son home. It's the best gift you could ever give me.

Kanya was so happy she cried. She was smiling and just glowing. Ranbir was happy to see her so happy. The reached the orphanage and had to complete all the final formalities. By now Sonny was one year old, give or take. He was so happy when he saw Kanya, he always was. He took to Kanya just as easily as Kanya had taken to him. Ranbir loved seeing mother and son together. Sonny knew Ranbir but he would definitely be a mama's boy. It brought a smile to Ranbir face every time he looked their way. Kanya was walking with a very wobbly Sonny who was just learning to walk. They were having a ball.

Finally all the formalities were done. Ranbir and Kanya drove home. Kanya didn't leave Sonny's side once. When he fell asleep in the car she cradled him. They reached the Nanda house and Ranbir got out all of Sonny's things. Sonny had woken up by then. He was in Kanya's arms when they walked up to the house together. When they opened the door the house was decorated and they were being welcomed by Aditya Bhaia, Pooja Bhabi and a very curious Aryan. Ranbir had told Pooja Bhabi what was going on so she set up a little welcome party for them. Ranbir came and introduced then to his son...

R- Everyone pleas meet my son Suraj Nanda. Or as him mamma calls him Sonny.

Everyone took to Sonny naturally. At first Sonny was a little apprehensive as was Aryan. Once both boys were placed in the nursery they got along just fine. Kanya didn't want to leave them but Ranbir had made her go eat something. That night Kanya had slept with Sonny in between them. In the morning Ranbir was awakened by small hands grabbing at his face. He opened his eyes to see Sonny trying to climb up on him.

R- What is this son, cant you let papa sleep go to mamma now, come back to me when im awake.
K- Wow, great parenting...come on Sonny come to mamma.
S- Mmm...mamma....

Ranbir sat bolt up, Sonny just called Kanya mamma. Kanya was crying she was so happy. Ranbir was too. He got up and hugged Kanya and his son. He was so happy that this tiny person held so much power over two adults. Ranbir had gone to work reluctantly but a surprise awaited him when he got home.

R- Where is my Sonny boy, papa is home.
K- There he is. (sitting on the bed next to Kanya)

Before Ranbir could come to Sonny, Sonny saw Ranbir and extended his arms to be picked up....

S- Papa...

Ranbir froze on the spot. His son just called him "papa".

R- Did he just say that ...did he just call me papa?
K- Yes he did, we have been practicing all day with your picture.
R- Well my boy is a genius.

He was so happy. He finally had the family that he wanted. He was happy. He had a great wife and now a son that he just adored with all his heart. It was his family, his and only his. They made him complete, and he couldn't ask for more. He would be happy with this family for the rest of his life. Little did Ranbir know that his destiny had other things planned for him.....
