INNER JOB

There was a name of a bank and a code on the envelope belonging to Delhi, which increased the mystery. The police weren't going to just let him walk out of Mumbai as he had done in the hospital. That thought brought him to wonder how the police were able to locate him in the first place. They had even abandoned the car.

"Secure all the stations, borders and airports. If I know this guy very well I know he'll try to leave the city or country." ACP Rathod ordered. He had some very spicy information and had become even more confident on catching him. He got the news of shoot at sight order so he was determined that Rajveer was definitely on the wrong side of the law. Last night he had found Alisha's car near Juhu Beach, so they had to be somewhere close. One of the waiters at the roadside caf even recognised them after hearing the description. From what Rathod knew, Rajveer was bound to go to 'the house' but it was something which struck quite later.

It was nearly sunset until Alisha reached the nightclub in Santa Cruz. The same place they were last night as he had told her. She couldn't believe he was actually sitting down on the pavement with his legs spread, right after they were nearly caught. "Do you have a death wish…" her tongue lingered away because the man sitting was not him. It was a passed out drunkard, but the clothes were the same.

As he stepped out of the darkness she saw he had changed his clothes to normal black trousers and a red T- shirt with a Nike logo. His head bandage was taken off, which had ruffled his hair. He was transformed from being a coma patient for the past three weeks to a normal walking human being. He was actually an army officer.

"I thought that perhaps changing the image would help," Rajveer gave out his hand to stand her up, "I was looking for some clothes but since there was no money, I'd to do it the old fashioned way."

"I see."

He showed her the envelope, "it has got a bank code and a name. There's got to be a connection, I know it because of the same handwriting and the same symbol. I think this must've been the thing that red shirt guy was trying to tell me."

The code didn't mean anything to her, but she could see hope in his eyes so she went with the flow, "that would explain why he was so secretive about it".

"I've to leave, but it won't be easy."

She thought about it. "Perhaps there's a way."
"Are you going to come up with one of your so called brilliant ideas?" he spoke sarcastically.

"Excuse me; it's because of me that you're standing here. There's one way in which we both can leave this city without getting caught," she grabbed his forearm towards the darker area, "I know this guy who will help to take us across the border."

"Do you work for the mafia?"

A shudder ran through her. "I told you to trust me. I'm you're only ticket out of here, so you've no choice."

"Okay. So how will we manage to get all the documents then?"

"Just leave it all up to me. Right now we must separate our paths. Stay at different hotels so that we can't be found. Here keep this", she handed him her mobile. "I'll call you tomorrow about where we have to meet and what we have to do". She walked away, "and yes, change your get up."

Next morning Rajveer got a call quite early. Not like he was sleeping or anything. He had been doing that for the past three to six weeks and now he wanted to stay awake as much as he could. He knew that with each blink he took, he missed something obvious.

At a checking post all the passengers were checked. A priest waited outside for his preacher as she was to come with his car. The time was running out and still there was no sign of her, "excuse me child", he stopped a young couple in the car queue, "what's the reason for all this security?"

"Two dangerous criminals are at loose." They drove further down.

The priest frowned and then smiled when he saw a young woman drive up in a blue Audi. She had finally arrived.

Alisha immediately covered her face with a veil because the police were right in front of her. She passed by the priest without giving him a second glance.

"Excuse me child you're aware that they'll tell you to remove you're veil."

She stared at him.

"I'm saying that it wouldn't be wise to wear that veil since it would be removed."

"Perhaps father you can put some sense into them," she came closer and passed something discreetly, "I'm sure they'll understand religious values."

"I'll certainly try," he stared down at the black book he was passed. It was an Indian passport, but why did she give it to him? It seemed that plans had changed. He opened it up and saw his name 'Father Joseph Fernandez'. She was much cleverer than he thought. With Rajveer's name, everything had changed as now he had become a respectable priest traveling around.

During their wait in the queue, Rajveer kept wondering how Alisha managed it all without a sweat. From the beginning she had kept so many secrets. Their plan had been that they would go separately at the Maharashtran border and then would meet up so if one of them were to get caught, then the other one was safe. He couldn't understand how she knew he was going to appear as a priest? They hadn't discussed that.

It was their turn finally to come to the checking point. Rajveer became tensed, but Alisha remained calm.

One officer came and asked them to show some ID whilst another officer came and checked their car from inside and out.

At first Rajveer thought that they would be caught but when the officer handed back their passports and then waved to the others to let them go, he sighed with relief. He had noticed by the corner of his eye that Alisha had passed something to the officer who came to check the car. Because he was so engrossed he looking at the other officer, he couldn't make out what it was she gave.

"This is way too easy. You've to tell me what the catch is here." Rajveer blurted out when they finally arrived at a secluded area on the highway.

"Didn't I tell you that I'll manage everything?"

"What you haven't been telling me is how you only being a nurse are able to pull such tricks."

Alisha bit her lip, as she knew that the right time hadn't come because she hadn't been given the instructions, "what if I told you that I knew guys that knew guys?

He got out of the car and pulled her out as well. "You're just trying to make an excuse so that I would leave it."

"Why don't you leave it?"

He held her elbow quite tight, "what do you mean?"

She got scared by his eyes, "you're hurting me. I meant leave it for now and concentrate on what you're here to find," she struggled to get out of his heavy grip but he resisted.

"When this is all over you'd better tell me the whole truth."

Suddenly a villager came on a bicycle and fell off near them. With difficulty the guy tried to get up and pull up is cycle.

As a friendly gesture Rajveer picked up the cycle and then gave his hand to the villager. The villager shook hands with Rajveer and Rajveer felt a piece of paper being passed. He got two shocks. The first one was that the paper was yet another one of the messages. The second one was that when the villager rode half way back on the road he removed his clothes to reveal a police officer's uniform. He realised that it was all an inner job.

end of part.
