Next morning, Naina was awake when it was still dark. She went to freshen up herself. She was surprised to find herself looking quite calm in the makeshift mirror of the freshroom of the dhaba. Naina did not know but she was actually looking very pretty. Today she decided to wrap the maroon dupatta around herself. The rust color of the dupatta gave a rosy hue to her complexion. After a good night's sleep her beautiful eyes were shining with unknown anticipation.
Naina returned to the dhaba, The Lady had already prepared a tasty hot cup of masala tea thickened with fresh milk and served to Naina with a bowl full of matthi. It was simply delicious! Naina savored the tea with relish, holding the steel glass with both her hands, trying take in all the heat from it.
She took out the maps and notebook form her bag and began to study it carefully.
She had to get down from the bus after traveling for 25 miles and would have to comb the nearby villages in search of Rajveer. She did not have any idea how she would do it, what should she ask, but she knew that she would somehow do it.
Naina asked the lady about nearby villages and jotted down few names.
She got into the bus routed for Payal. She told the conductor that she would get down earlier. She took a front window seat and was at once lost in her dream world. She did not notice the two men who had followed her from the dhaba and got in the same bus..
When the bus started , Naina carefully followed the mileposts at the road side, where distances of each stone from Malaudh was written, 1 mile, two miles, five miles…..it went on. She was again lost in her dreams and would not have noticed the 30–mile marked milestone, had not the conductor called her. She thanked the man and quickly got down from the bus.
Those two men followed her.
She used the compass to determine her position and knew that to get to the exact spot of 30 miles and 40 degree north east of Malaudh, she would have to go towards north - west from that road. She started to walk towards the field. She had come to know from the lady that two villages lay adjacent on this side followed by an acre of wild forest. More villages continued on the other side of the forest. A narrow unpaved path led from the road to the interior of the rich farm land . There were a couple of tea and paan shops on the roadside. Few people sitting there stared at the strange girl walking into the field. Two men from the bus did not immediately follow Naina as they knew the area well and that Naina would be quite visible even if they would follow her after half an hour.
Naina was already walking for an hour. She was not really tired but clueless how to find Rajveer. She was looking desperately here and there. She had met few village girls whom she had asked whether any new people had visited there in last two three weeks but got no concrete answer back.
"Oi soni kudiye – aa ja na humare pass," Naina felt a pull at her dupatta.
Her soldier instinct reacted immediately. She threw her dupatta from her head, swiftly turned around with a hand on the gun.
"Chal kheton ke pichhe "
Naina 's hand rose above their head and sliced on the arm that was pulling her dupatta . She immediately took out the gun. The man started to cry out loud in pain as he was completely unprepared for that blow from the "soni kudiia"., but stopped gaping at the sight in front. Naina standing with her feet apart, her eyes shining like fireballs and clutching the gun with both the hands aiming at them.
" Main shoot kar dungi, aage mat badiye" yelled Naina.
The second man who had not felt the power of Naina's blow grinned and started to pace forward. May be he thought it was a toy gun !
"Booo……m" went the gun .
Naina had shot the cap off the second man's head and blown it away up above a tree.
It was complete silence for a few seconds.
Then the flock of birds flew away from the tree making wild sound.
Two men turned their back and fled away at top speed.
Clap ……..Clap……..Clap. One – two – three claps.
Sound of clapping hands came from behind.
Naina swiftly turned around and pointed the gun at the source of the claps.
The fourth clap stopped mid-way.
Naina turned into stone; her hands still pointing the gun but a drop of tear flowed from each of her eyes.
Naina has reached her destination.
