Part1:

It had been four years. Even then the shocking, heart wrenching events of that day were afresh in her heart. Every day, the wounds dug deeper indicating her helplessness. Suffocation threatened to empower and devastate her. But she knew she had to fulfill her promise and she did. Currently, she, Captain Naina Singh Ahluwalia, one of the much sought after soldiers of the country, having achieved quite an amount of credentials and medals of bravery had another mission to complete. She knew before she succumbed to her shortcomings, she had to show him ? her mentor, her luminary, her captain, her ?.. the colorful world of freedom. She had to restore his pride and self- confidence. She had one focus in mind ? to repay the man who had sacrificed his career and self-respect for his love ? for her and her brother. She knew she would always owe her present and future to him. His silence had spoken a lot. She at least had her pals and parents. But he had lost both his dear ones ? his best friend and the love of his life. She had always kept a low profile; she knew it would act as silent weaponry in her pursuit. And it did. It had played an astonishing factor in their victory.

?The dark, damp, dusky atmosphere could not have more affected the prisoner more than his past had. The twinkle in his eyes had long since vanished. His face unshaven and rigid masked all emotions but it was his eyes that spoke volumes. His voice rarely heard hinted his bitter past. Despite the darkness it was his heart that hoped, hoped that nothing had happened to her. His love for his country only magnified with time. Though, he was no longer a captain, but in his heart he was still - the faithful son of his motherland. Inquisitive and curious, he read the newspaper which was scarcely distributed and rotated within the bars for any information linked to his past. There were occasional tidbits about the accomplishments of all his cadets except one!! The one whom he could die for. There were 10 more years before he would be let free. The very thought that his staunch and impulsive cadet might have become a mother, wife and moreover a responsible young lady by now was enough to make him smile painfully with utter tentativeness. It was going to be a long wait before he could have a glimpse at her. But little did he know that his anticipated wait was going to be short lived.

Two months later:-

The jeep stopped with a screech. From it stepped out, a young lady draped in a pale lemon saree. Clutching a stack of files and carrying a handbag she walked towards the entrance of the bricked room which overlooked the vast stony compound wall which in turn enclosed the inmates. A few minutes of discussion with the guard and she was allowed inside. Two other old guards accompanied her. They were just about to turn around the corner when the guards? walkie-talkie rang. They told her to walk over to the forth cubicle on the left and they would be with her in a moment.

He had been dreaming about the trial when his eyes flashed open. It was intuitive. He had a weird feeling as if his life was once again on the edge of a turning point. He slowly walked towards the water pot placed at the corner of the cold, stony floor when his sharp years picked up the sound of footsteps approaching. They were soft like that of a woman?s but how was that possible. This prison housed only male prisoners. Unknowingly, his heart began to beat wildly. His back which was facing the bars gave an involuntary shiver. The footsteps stopped outside and then there was silence. Slowly, he turned around and his eyes captured the most beautiful vision ever. He was shocked. There she stood, gazing at him with a strange expression he had never seen. There were moments of complete placidness and then the most loving word "Naina" escaped from his mouth.

Part2:-

Naina knew that if she looked at him any more- her feelings would run wild. The mere sight of him in those clothes and the effect of the severe blow to his life pierced her bone marrow. How she wanted to be in his arms wanting to comfort and be comforted. She knew that the information that would be about to break out to him would both break and make him. Those eyes were now strangely burning with a fire. She knew that this condition of his was all because of her and she could never forgive herself. Her love had to face the wrath of life due to her. She had to be tough. But nevertheless, tears did not stop rolling down her already flaxen cheek. Suddenly their eye-contact was broken by the jingling of the keys which one of the guards had inserted into the padlock. Before leaving them alone he informed her that she had one hour to the maximum and then there was stillness. She gently shut the door behind her, placed the files and handbag on a stout stool and then walked up to him. She could feel his eyes fixed upon her mapping up each and every detail. Her eyes lowered a bit as she was right in front of him. Gathering up courage, she lifted her gaze and met him eye to eye. She could see his eyes moisten. She broke into muffled sobs and soon she found herself enveloped by his arms.

He felt her grip getting stronger. Those priceless tears falling from the kohl lined eyes fell on his chest through the exposed part of his shirt. He was exuberant and shocked at the same time. He could feel the warmth of her trembling body simmer through him making him feel human. After a couple of minutes, he unwantedly separated her and asked " Naina, tumhain yahan kisne aane diya?" They were same as that of he had asked her 4 years ago. Suddenly there was lightning and thunder and due to the noise, a small rodent which had been hiding scampered across the cell.

Seeing this pathetic condition of his stabbed the woman in her. She slowly lifted her bangle clad arms and put it on his shirt and clutching his collar she asked him," Aap kaise hain?"

That was the most mellifluous voice ever- Sweet and concerned. She had grown into a matured, rational and a lucid woman. Her cheekbones were much more pronounced and her hair was longer falling in curls upto her waist. He felt himself smiling genuinely for the first time in ages at her simple question. He could hear his voice saying-
"Tumhain kya lagta hai? Ek ex-captain ko jail main kaise hona chahiye, Cadet Naina 'Ah'Singh?!" She didn't answer; instead she walked away and sat down on the creaky, wooden cot. He didn't realize that he had hurt her. He sincerely hoped that this was not a trance and if it was not then it should never end. He soon realized that this wasn't a trance when he pinched himself. She called him over and asked him to sit beside her. He sat down beside her and was surprised when he saw her digging into the bag and retrieve a small cardboard carton. He opened it to smell strong spicy aroma spread through the cell and his eyes landed on a hot grilled sandwich along with a sachet of sauce. The fact that she still remembered the minutest favorites of his despite being only his student brought tears to his eyes. He had no idea of the transformation of her feelings. He glanced at her and sought permission. Without haste, he quickly started eating. After having finished, he told her "Thanks a lot Cadet!"

She didn't bother to correct him. There were more pressing things to deal with right now. She started – "Sir, Aapko doosra mauka mila hai". She could feel his eyes widen with shock. "Hum kal hi wapas Almora ke liye nikal rahe hain. Yeh, hearing pehle low profile main ho rahi hai. Aapke opposition main phir se Captain Salve hain."

He stood up numb with shock. How was this possible. His sentence had already been met out to him.How could a re-trial be called for? He looked at her demanding an explanation.

Sensing his question, she replied, "Two months ago Major Nair had been found guilty of amalgamating with anti-social elements. There was about to be a heavy transaction of our country's secrets with the enemies when he was caught red-handed.
The court had meted out a life sentence to him and fortunately during his trial your name had come up and he had dropped hints of your innocence when suddenly he was murdered in cold-blood before he could completely confess. Thereby you are being given another chance to prove your innocence and loyalty."

There was a moment where things began to register in his mind. He then asked, "Who appointed Captain Salve, then?" She could feel the bitterness in his voice when he said Captain. And she knew that the answer would devastate him but she had to do this. There was a slight waver in her voice when she answered , " Who Sir,………. Ummmmmm Aapke mentor – Gehlot sir."

The reply shattered his world. The person whom he respected the most in the world was pitted against him. The reason was slowly beginning to dawn upon him. The words of Colonel Shakti, the strangely familiar voice, the unknowing surveillance on all his moves. It had been his Sir. He fell down. He was in a daze when he felt naina bending down and placing a hand on his shoulder. He couldn't bear it any longer and he broke down. He was glad that Naina was there with him. Naina laid him down on her lap and he let out all his anguish. She softly ruffled his hair comforting him. It killed her to see him like this. But she knew that after sometime her Captain Rajveer would be back on track. He had always been a true soldier and a fighter. He would win this game and by the end of this truth would be victorious.
