Ray of sunshine # 8
He closed the door to the hospital suite and crumbled down by the wall beside the door. He could not take it; he was unable to hold himself together.
How can she be in this state? She had been like this since god knows how long? What kind of days did she see? What kind of tortures did she experience? His heart broke into tiny irreparable pieces. He held his head in his hands to maintain his balance.
My beautiful, darling wife; My beautiful darling wife who had been pampered all her life; by her parents, by me; My beautiful, darling wife who did not know the spelling of PAIN. He banged his head to the wall behind. He couldn't control himself. What is supposed to do with this situation?
In this extreme moment of weakness, tears streamed out of his eyes. He wasn't this broken even when he came to know of her death. He had held himself together for his daughter and named it all to fate. Even though, he missed her and he was burning inside, it was bearable. But, what kind of a heartless brutal fate is this? What did he do to see her in this situation?? How will he be able to shoulder this burning ball of fire?
"Papa??" Diya walked to him.
He opened his eyes and looked at her. He didn't even think about how it would seem to his daughter to look at him like this. She walked into his arms and asked him the obvious question. "Why are you crying?"
He hugged her and wept like a baby. "I cannot see mama like this Diya..."
"What's wrong with mama?" she asked him.
"I want to go back home!" she decided.
"VIRAT!!!" Vyshali ran to him. Diya had run away from her. "Virat, buck up. Diya, give me and dad a minute honey."
"No. I want to be with daddy." She hugged Virat tightly.
"Virat!!!!!!!! Rona bandh kar! Kya kar raha hai?"
He closed his eyes and didn't say a word. She had asked him to show her their daughter. If he couldn't bear looking at his love, how can their baby bear it? He wiped his tears and looked at Diya. Suddenly, in that moment, he knew what he had to do. There was only one way to get her back.
"Di, can you give me and Diya a few minutes?"
"Virat, I don't think that's a good idea."
"Di, please. I know what I am doing."
"Virat, right now, you are being very emotional. These kind of things leave an impact on a kids mind forever."
"Well, then, let it. Let it leave an impact. Let her know that there are these heartless, soulless scoundrels out there who can rob you off your dignity and respect. That they can cold-heartedly rip your mind and body apart. But, they cannot and will not be able to touch your soul, your truth. Let her learn this, right at this age! Because when that happens - she needs to know that I WILL BE RIGHT HERE FOR HER." Virat screamed, spilling all his pain and frustration out in the open.
"Bhai.."
"Di, I am not discussing this anymore."
Vyshali stormed out of there. She knew it was an extremely bad idea to take Diya inside to see her mom. She had gone inside to meet Manvi a few minutes ago and she being a doctor, could not control her emotions. This would be lethal for a small baby to absorb and see her mother's condition.
"Stop yelling. You are scaring me." Diya warned Virat.
"Sweetheart. Do you know whom I just met inside this room?" Virat asked Diya.
"Yeah."
"You do?"
"You met mamma."
"How do you know that?" he asked her shocked.
"I peeped in."
"Why didn't you come inside then?"
"Bua took me away. I came back, but you are crying. Why are you crying?"
"Mama is really sick honey. She wanted to see you."
"Then let's see her. I want to see her. Why are we not seeing her?"
"We will. In a second. Diya, promise me that you will not cry and scream on seeing Momma.."
"I won't cry or scream." She promised him readily.
He looked at her for a minute, trying to re-think if he is doing the right thing.
"This is boring. I am going in." she opened the door and ran inside.
"Diya..." Virat followed her.
"Diya, my baby.." Manvi cried on seeing her.
"Momma!!" She tried to climb the high bed. Virat came in and lifted her in his arms and sat beside her once again.
Manvi tried to get up and Virat helped her by putting a pillow behind her. "You okay?" he asked.
Manvi looked down again, didn't look him in the eye. She turned her eyes to Diya. "Can I talk with Diya alone?" she asked him in an extremely low voice.
"Manvi?"
"Please.." she requested.
Virat just looked at her. Why is she avoiding looking at him?
"I will ring the bell, after I am done." She told him.
"Diya, I am right outside sweetheart. Call me if you or mama need anything, okay?"
"Okay, bye."
Manvi looked at Diya for a really long time, with a small smile, until she had this newer and older image of hers imprinted in her memory. She didnt know where to start. Diya kept looking at her too. She didn't understand why she hasn't hugged her like she used to. She crawled upto her, close, and she touched her face with her little fingers.
"You are real!" she exclaimed.
Tears started cascading down Manvi' cheeks. She didn't think her Diya would even recognize her like this.
"Where were you?" Diya asked her another question, as Manvi wasn't replying. This was so unusual. Her mom used to chat with her continuously, non-stop. Why wasn't she talking?
"I missed you! I am really mad at you..." she continued
"Why would you just leave me?"
"Why would you leave daddy?"
"Daddy misses you too..he is always sad. I don't like him like this..." she said looking down and playing with her dress hem.
Outside the door, Virat was overhearing the mother - daughter's one sided conversation - things that he wanted to tell her, things he choked on, things he couldn't bring himself to say - his daughter was sitting in front of her and telling her like it was any other day - like they were picking up a conversation, from where they had left an year ago. He was breaking down, part by part " he was inconsolable.
"Why aren't you talking anything?" she kept goading Manvi. She put her arms around her and hugged her. Physically, Manvi's bruises were aching and burning at Diya's innocent touch but to her heart, it was a panacea, a magical healing balm.
"You look so pretty baby..." Manvi finally whispered into her daughter's ear.
"So do you mamma..." Diya kissed her face.
There was this huge tide of emotion that started moving in Manvi's heart. She felt at home, at peace, listening to her daughter's words.
"Daddy made me chocolate chip pancakes yesterday. He doesn't put as many chips as you do..."
"When are you coming home?"
"I am going to be a girl scout next month. I have to sell two hundred cookie packs. Daddy said he is only buying 20." she pouted.
"Daddy still sleeps in his sponge bob pajamas. I hate those."
Suddenly, the whole room came alive. Manvi started laughing, after one full year, heartfully, joyfully laughing. Virat stopped feeling sorry and opened the door to see the laugh he used to die for. It was still the same. It was still equally beautiful. At that minute, he realized why Manvi wouldn't look at him. It was because, she had seen pity in his eyes, he had felt sorry for her. He had felt sympathy for her.
But Diya, in her blissful ignorance, didn't even notice all her wounds and bruises, all her scars and burns. To her, she was her mother, as pretty as ever, as lovely as ever, as loving as ever. His daughter has shown him a way to reach her. He walked in the room, like he had a right to be there and sat beside his wife, like he used to. He looked at her and and before she could open her mouth, he stopped her.
"Manvi, I am glad you didn't die on us. I have filled in for you for one full year, and god knows I need a break. You better tie your shoe laces and come back home coz I aint doing your share of work no more."
She looked at him shocked, meeting him eye to eye. She saw his Virat again. And before she said anything, he held her chin and kissed her, like he used, on her mouth, with all his pent up love and passion, like it was the very first time he is kissing her. "Oh, I missed you so much baby.." he cried.
She didn't respond but she didn't push him either.
Diya giggled looking at them together. "If you both are done crying, can we go home now?"
