Part 3

It had been two weeks since Manvi got the friend request from Virat and since then her life had been a complete blur. Finals, end of year get togethers, friends saying goodbye and parting ways to go to different universities around the country. Manvi felt happy that her life was this busy as it kept her mind away from Virat. As they say out of sight out mind.

"Dad, I was wondering if you'd let me go by myself to Delhi." Manvi said knowing very well the answer but just wanting to pull her father's leg.

"Absolutely not young lady," Mr Chaudhary said. "How can you even ask such a thing?"

"We'll drop you off at college and stay at your chachu's place for the weekend; we haven't seen them since last Diwali." Manvi's dad went on.

"Dad, do you remember Uncle Inder, they are in Delhi aren't they? You should go and visit them too." Manvi said thinking that it might lead to her meeting Virat.

"No, I haven't talked to Inder Vadhera in years, it wouldn't be right to call him now after all these years." Mr Chaudhary said.

"But Dad," Manvi started but her father cut her off.

"Enough of this, go and finish packing, our flight leaves early tomorrow morning." Manvi's father said abruptly. Manvi looked at him strangely and wondered what brought about this behaviour in her father. He had never spoken to her in such a manner. She shrugged it off and went upstairs to finish her packing.

Manvi looked around her room and sighed. It will be a while before I can feel the comfort and safety of my room. She was leaving to an unknown place, to meet new people. She would have to start all over again. She had made many close friends in high school but will have to make new ones now. This was one thing that she had always dreaded and still dread. She always felt that people will not like her because she was a quiet and a reserved person. It was a feeling that she could never get past especially at a time and age where everyone was judged based on their social status it was hard to think otherwise.

"I just hope my room-mate is bearable. Or better yet I get a single room." Manvi said to herself and sighed "Change is inevitable I guess, just have to deal with it." She continued putting the rest of her clothes in the suitcase and going to her bookshelf and packing up her most favourite books which included her Harry Potter collection she had been an ardent fan ever since her father had gifted her the first book for her eleventh birthday and she had a chest of posters hidden away under her bed which she wished she had room for in her bag.

***********************************

"Mannu, get up sweetie, we'll get late for our flight if we don't hurry." Mrs Chaudhary said as she came in to Manvi's room to wake her up. Manvi very reluctantly got up and sat on the bed stretching her arms.

"Why did have to get a flight at 6 in the morning." Manvi started complaining.

"Mannu, stop complaining and get ready." Mrs Chaudhary started again.

Manvi just made a pouting face and got out of bed and said very sweetly. "Momma aren't you sad to see me out of bed this early."

"Manvi, how many times do I have to tell you." This time a little bit more sternly.

"Sorry mom, give me 20 minutes I'll get ready and be down stairs." Manvi said and rushed to take a shower.

Twenty minutes later Manvi was dressed wearing a faded pair of blue jeans and pink kurta top letting her hair loose to dry. She looked around the room for one last time and picked up her lap top bag and sling bag which she carried her mobile and purse and went downstairs. Her father had already taken her suitcases to the car last night knowing her daughter to be an anti-morning person.

"My baby girl is all grown up." Mrs Chaudhary said as she saw Manvi coming down the stairs.

"Mom I'm a big girl now and please don't start crying right now, we have a plane to catch, remember." Manvi said and her mother started laughing at Manvi reminding her not to get late.

***********************************

A few hours later the Chaudhary's had landed at Delhi airport. Manvi wanted to take it all in, the weather, the buildings surrounding her. She didn't want to miss a single thing. She was sad to be leaving her parents but at the same time she had this sudden sense of independence as soon as she had walked out from the doors of the airport. Manvi's uncle Raj had come to pick them from the airport and they were on their way to the University to drop off Manvi so that she could settle into her dorm before classes started the next day.

Manvi was admiring the buildings on the road to the university when the car took a turn from the main road and was going down a road with tall trees on either side of it. The car suddenly came to a stop and Manvi looked up to see the most beautiful sight. The entrance gate was supported by two pillars made out of marble stone. She could see buildings and a big garden beyond the gates. She could just imagine herself spending the next three years of her life inside those big gates. The car drove inside past numerous buildings and then stopped at West hall which was where Manvi's dorm room was at. Everyone got out of the car silently knowing that this was the moment they were dreading. Her father carried the suitcases up to her room which was on the second floor. The only good thing was that it was a single.

"At least my time in the dorm will be peaceful." Manvi thought to herself.

"Promise me you'll call if you need anything" Mr Chaudhary said in a low voice. Manvi could feel he was trying to hide his sadness of leaving her alone. Mrs Chaudhary was wiping her tears and Manvi felt herself about to burst but knew that if she acted like she was strong her parents will find it easier.

"Mom, dad I'll be fine, don't worry about me. Chachu's just an hour away and I can call him for anything. And I'll make sure I'll call you every day." Manvi said trying to muster up the strength to stop her from bursting into tears.

"We'll be going then the room looks nice, thankfully you got a single too." Dad was saying. "Study hard and make us proud, darling." He hugged Manvi holding her tightly and then Manvi hugged her mother who couldn't stop the tears.

"Don't cry momma, your baby is a big girl now, she'll be fine." Manvi said and walked down stairs to drop her parents to the car. She waved and kept on looking even after the car had disappeared out of sight.

"Right then, what am I going to do with myself for the rest of the day." Manvi thought to herself. She thought she'll unpack her things and turned to go upstairs.

"Hi, I'm Ria, are you a first year." A bubbly girl came up from behind me and put her hand out.

"Um yeah, I'm Manvi."

"My friends and I are going to the student lounge, they are having an ice breaker, you know food, fun and games, want to come." She went on.

"Ummm not today, I just got here." Manvi said. She was not the type of person to go to parties with someone she just met.

"Oh come on it will be fun, what else are you going to do all day. I'll wait till you freshen up and then we'll go. Believe me you'll have the time of your life."

"Ok" Manvi said reluctantly but she had no other choice Ria wouldn't have left her alone.

***********************************

"Another fresher party." He told his friend Karan.

"Aww come on man you know you love them even if you complain about it all the time." Karan said and they both started laughing.

"I'm going to check out what the new arrivals are." Karan said and winked. "You should do the same."

As he turned around to go towards the food table he saw her. She was wearing a pair of black denims and a blue sleeveless top. She had her hair lose, she was with Ria, but seemed to be out of place. He tried to get a better look at her face but someone came in between him. He made his way through the crowd and tapped on her shoulder.

"Hi, don't I know you from somewhere," he said trying his most famous pick up line. She turned and looked up at him and kept on looking.

"Oh shit, that line has never been true." He said and started smiling, "Manvi oh my God I can't believe it."

"Virat" was all that she managed to say.

********************************************

"Wow how long has it been, never thought I'll run in to you here of all places." Virat said.

"I know," Manvi was still getting over the shock of seeing Virat. She couldn't help but notice people staring at the them and why wouldn't they, here she was just a plain looking girl standing next to Virat who was tall about 6 foot judging from the fact that she was only just up to his very broad shoulders. He was wearing a faded pair of jeans with a black fitting t-shirt that showed his tight abs. He had small stubble growing on his face. she could have stared at him for ever.

"I seriously hope this is not a dream, because I don't want to get up." Manvi thought to herself.

"Hello, earth to Manvi." Virat was saying and she suddenly came back to her senses making her blush a beetroot red.

"So what's new with you, how are aunty and uncle, dad didn't even tell me they were coming to Delhi." Virat went on.

"I don't think dad has talked to uncle in ages." Manvi said. "He's only staying today at Chachu's and then going back to Mumbai tomorrow."

"I never thought I'll bump into you like this Manvi, actually I came across your FB profile a couple of weeks ago, and you never messaged me back, thought you'd forgotten about me." Virat said.

"Oh Virat, if only you knew how much I stalked your profile."Manvi thought to herself.

"No I was surprised to see a request from you." She said, which of course was the truth but he didn't need to know the other details, she didn't want to scare him away.

"Hey I've been looking for you." Manvi looked around to see a guy call out to Virat.

"Hi, I'm Karan." He said Manvi silently smiled feeling uncomfortable at the way he was looking at her.

"Karan, this is Manvi, I've known her for a long time." Virat said and looked at Karan as if he meant business.

"Hi nice to meet you." Karan said with a smile.

"Karan Virat, how were the holidays, I see you've met Manvi." Ria suddenly came up from nowhere and said.

"Actually I've known Manvi since way back."Virat said and smiled.

"See I told you, you won't regret it." Ria said. "We should get going, the dorm has a curfew."

"So I'll see you around then," Virat said.

"Yeah, I guess so." Manvi said.

"Come on, or else we'll have to sleep outside." Ria said.

"Bye Virat." Manvi said looking back at him he waved back and smiled, he's smile was just as she had always remembered it.

She silently thanked her father for choosing this University for her.

"I guess college won't be that bad after all." She thought to herself as she went back to the dorm with Ria.

Thanks for bearing with me, hope I didn't bore you too much. Please leave your comments, love to read what you think of it.
