@Aditi - Mind if I ask which show? In case I know the characters it will be easier for me to explain.
And about examples. Oh! Well,Like for instance - the character of the guy can be like brushes away the negative side to a situation and always carries a smile along. Come what may, his smile never fades away. While the girl has always been grumpy and gets irritated over situations very easily. So she kinda adores this quality of the guy to find happiness and positive aspects in every situation.. every phase. For individual background stories you can brush over their lives, their family issues -if any, their friends, their work style and some sort of drawback to their lives.. some difficulty that they face..Like it can be a group of friends that XYZ girl is into, apart from the XYZ guy being her best friend.. and the "Friends" that she has are "friends for advantage" kind of group. Maybe she can be good at work and they can just get it done by easily talking her into it. And inspite of knowing the fact she just neglects it. At one point it does bother a person and so it does to her. The only genuine person in her life be the XYZ guy.
And if they are on the ground of FORMAL friendship then how to break that glass door
Say being they are out of college, recently. And they have to join their work place. It messes up with their routines. And they are left with a tight schedule that fitting in their Friendship routine gets difficult and they have to spend more time without seeing or talking to each other. That would make them sink into their memory lane and the feeling of not having that person by your side just seeps in. And realization.

Hm, I think that even if they are not that close, just by spending time together, there may be certain things about each other that they have begun to take for granted? It could be the smallest of things (including things that they would have found irritating earlier), but it is when they realise that they actually miss those small things that they may realise what they actually feel for each other. Makes sense? After this realisation, breaking the glass door would take a lot of awkward moments, because it would involve them going outside their comfort zone and doing things they would not have done earlier. Maybe compliments about the randomest of things... small, understated gestures showing care and protectiveness... stuff that would confuse the other person and probably make them laugh. But at some level, the feelings behind that awkwardness would strike a chord in the other person, and eventually they would have become closer. This part is tricky to explain, because it depends a lot on the characterisation of the protagonists, and what would constitute uncharacteristic behaviour for them.

^ You're most welcome, Aditi 😃 And I really like the suggestions by -shenz- as well.
Good luck!
