Okay! Then you might need to highlight their characterization. Something that's catchy about the protagonist, something that's unique and attractive about one, from the other's perspective. Not as a friend but in general. Or something that they had learnt about the other while they weren't really friends.

You can get a background story for both the characters and describe their struggle or their journey, their life. And Small bits and pieces of their lives that might be simple or weird but admirable.

wait I am confused. You are saying about protagonist if I am not wrong

I know it sounds confusing. But yes, I was trying to make some sense and suggest something for your protagonist

@Aditi - can I ask you a question? Why is it so that you don't want their friendship to be highlighted in the course of the realization, especially when you want it simple?

Friendship of protagonists has already so defined that I have no more moments to highlight that, Plus its a continuation from the show in my version so its a bit restricted

Something along the lines of 'distance makes the heart grow fonder'?

It doesn't necessarily have to be dramatic.

If the two people have been friends for some time, at some level, they would have gotten habituated to each other's presence, to the way the other person is and behaves. There may be some kind of routine perhaps that has been set in place - seeing each other at a certain time, saying and doing certain things in a certain way. And as it often happens, maybe the two have begun to take the comfort level between them for granted. That may be why they don't realise how the special the other person has become for them.

If, for some reason, then, something (even something quite minor) happens to break that routine / habit, perhaps that could lead to the realisation? They would start off being unreasonably irritated by the fact that the other person is not there, and then, in trying to make sense of this restlessness, it may dawn upon them.

Hope that helps? I don't know much about your story. So that's just something off the top of my head.

And if they are on the ground of FORMAL friendship then how to break that glass door
