Chapter 27
Khushi was sitting by the pool, with her hands clasped in her lap. This pool was witness to the major changes in hers and Arnavji's relationship. Nearly every important thing had happened here… Cruel rejection, expression of hate, expression of love, the moment he had kissed her, when she had kissed him, their fights, their comforts, solace-seeking… And also the place where what they had broke into pieces. She had always known that she loved her husband back when she was blank about her past… What shocked her was that despite knowing everything now, she still loved him… Longed to get back to him… But she didn't trust herself enough to make such choices...
She looked up at the sky. "Devi Maiyya, I made mistakes. I don't want to repeat them. My heart and mind are in conflict and for once, I wish someone else would make the choice for me instead…." She sighed.
"People are willing to decide for you if you give them a chance…" came a whisper in her ear.
She sprang to her feet, startled. She saw Arnav, looking at her, making a silent request with his eyes.
Khushi shook her head. "I am sorry. I-I just can't…"
"Khushi, please let me explain…"
Khushi looked away. "Explain what exactly…? The meaning of what you said that day? The meaning was clear enough to me."
"Khushi, please. You know how I get when I am angry…"
Khushi looked at him. "Arnavji, how long will you give that as an excuse to hurt me? Tell me how long, and I will stay… How many times haven't you apologized the same way for the same reason? What you said, was unforgivable. EVEN if it was anger… I can't keep telling myself that you are angry and you don't mean it…"
"Fine, I will never use it as an excuse again. Ever. So will you stay?" he asked.
Khushi blinked in confusion. "Huh?"
"You just said that if I tell you how long I will use that as an excuse, you would stay. And I just did tell you. So you are staying." Arnav replied.
"But I-"
"You gave your word Khushi…." Arnav said.
Khushi pursed her lips and walked out, feeling annoyed that he had cornered her with his words. "Laad Governor!" she muttered.
Arnav chuckled in victory, but the happiness was short-lived. His smile wore off as he remembered how and why Khushi had tried killing herself. And there was also the truth about how and why she had grown up without her parents…. Because of his father. He had learnt that hiding the truth could be disastrous, and he steeled himself to tell her the truth as soon as possible.
Khushi sat on the corner of the bed, lost in thought. She wanted to get away from here as much as she wanted to stay, but she couldn't trust him. The phrase 'Actions speak louder than words' ran through her mind. The fact was that no matter what he said (or rather YELLED) to her, he had always shown love to her. But so had Shyamji hadn't he? His actions were no way related to his mind… In fact, though his words and actions were both fake, his mind was entirely something else… But was it even right to compare someone like Shyamji to her Laad Governor? Maybe it- Gah!
She held her head in her hands and fell back on the bed, her legs still dangling off the bed. There was still so much to find out… Was everybody in on this? Was everyone working to bring the two of them together? Who was she kidding, of course they were! Why else would they have put on such a show? The Delhi Mein Bali today proved that they had been trying to get her memory back… And she had been surprised that Amma had sent her to Delhi without any protest… That meant even Amma wanted her back with Arnavji… Even Bhaiyya was helping… What could she do alone? And her intuition told her that her children had found out that he was their father before she had... How could she protest against all of them?
She smiled slightly at the thought of Papa being back… It would be a miracle that could never be accomplished if her mother came back too… From the dead? Of course not…

Anand was glad that Dad was back. It was time he informed Mausi about this. He dialed Garima's number.
"Hello, Mausi?"
"Haan Anand beta…"
"Woh, Mausi Papa is-"
"I know beta. I know. Jijaji came to see Jiji just few days back…! He is coming again today. He said he already met all of you. I just wish Jiji would wake up now!"
Anand sighed. "I know Mausi. It's been too long…."
"How is Khushi?"
"I think she is remembering… She's grown quite comfortable… The kids already know that Arnav is their father…"
"Well, that's good." Garima sighed. "Accha, I will talk to you tomorrow."
"Okay Mausi… Bye" Anand said and disconnected the call.
"Anandji?"
Anand turned around and faced a smiling Anjali. "Ji Anjaliji?"
Anjali smiled and said "Call me just Anjali please…" Her face grew serious. "And there is something you need to know…"
"Well, tell me Anjalij- Anjali…" Anand said, settling on the sofa.
Anjali sat next to him and said softly "Khushiji remembers everything…"
Yesterday-
Anjali was worried. Why did Khushiji want to leave so suddenly? Shes aw with worried eyes as Arnav and Khushi walked up together.
After sometime, she remembered that she had to put away some of Mamiji's sarees for dry-cleaning and headed upstairs, and as she passed Chhote's room, she froze.
"And yes, I remembered everything! How we met, our fights, that diwali night, our contract marriage, your k-kidnapping, the coming of your Dadi and what led to our re-marriage! I remember every DETAIL of our remarriage! And then... Di's godbharai…" There was a pause. "The things you accused me of AGAIN that day ring in my ears as if they had been uttered moments ago!"
"You accused me of bringing Shyamji back for MYSELF…. I never want to be ABOVE Di Arnavji… But again and again and again all you did was hurt… When Di didn't have any problem, when Di herself never accused me, it was like you were doing that to make up for what she didn't do!"
Anjali gasped. Chhote and his big mouth! She shook her head…
"Khushi, why did you-"
Khushiji cut him off. "Look Mr Raizada, you need not keep an eye on me anymore. I am leaving. I don't even know where Shyamji is, so I won't interfere in your Di's life again and-"
"Wait, Khushi! What nonsense are you talking! Keep an eye on you? Is that why you think I brought you here? Who even gave you that idea?"
"After you left that day...
Anjali's eyes grew wider and wider with every word that Khushi uttered. Shyam's shadow was haunting them even after he left!
Khushiji was about to say something more, but her phone rang and she excused herself.
Anjali left, perplexed. All Anjali thought about who could she confide to about this…. As she fell asleep with Little Khushi in her arms, she realized Anandji would be the best choice.
Anjali hadn't looked at Anand's face while saying this. And when she finally did, she saw murderous fury. "I swear by God, I will make sure he gets a death sentence!"
Anjali looked at him in alarm. "What, my brother?!"
Anand scoffed. "Ha, no! The punishment Pari is giving him is enough! I am talking about Shyam…"
"Good. Please do…" Anjali said and excused herself and went to kitchen.
Before she left, Anand called her. "Anjali?"
She turned around and gasped when she found him an inch away from her face. "Thank you…" he whispered in her ears and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
She looked at him shocked, red-faced. "But I-I am a divorcee…" she whispered.
"To me, you are just Anjali…"
Anjali smiled happily and gave him another kiss on the cheek and fled to the kitchen.
In the kitchen, Anjali cut the carrots with vigorous energy, imagining Shyam's face on the carrots… That snake had messed with her, Khushiji and hadn't even spared her brother… Die!

Khushi was immersed in her frustration when there was a knock on the door. "WHAT!" snapped.
"Khushi…"
"Arnavji, go away!"
"Khushi, I need to tell you something. Please?"
"There is nothing more to tell…"
"Khushi please… Just hear me out and then you can make your own choice."
Khushi sat up and sighed. "Come inside…"
Arnav walked in and the seriousness of his face scared her. "What is it?"
Arnav sat next to her and said "You will listen to everything first and then you can scold me all you want…"
Khushi's eyes widened. "Is it that bad?" she asked and began muttering "What could be that bad…" she wondered. Then her eyes widened. "Did you marry someone else?" she asked horrified.
Arnav blinked at her. "What the-! What made you think-" he paused and smirked at her "Would that be bad…?"
"Of course!" Khushi said skeptically.
Arnav leaned closer to her. "Why Khushi…"
Khushi realized what he was driving at and gathered her senses. "Well, if the father of my children is married to someone else, that is not a very nice thing is it?"
"So you accepted them to be my children…"
"When did I ever deny that…"
"So you indirectly accepted me as your-"
"ArgH! Arnavji what do you want!"
"Oh. Right." He said, and pulled out something from his pocket.
"Khushi, do you know this boy…?" he asked, showing a photo.
Khushi inspected the photo and withdrew in surprise. "Yes! He was that boy wh-who got me out from a d-dark…"
"….cupboard under the staircase?" he asked.
"How did you know!" she asked shocked.
"Well, Pari. That boy was me…"
"What? But you are… Why are you… Are you crazy!"
"Why is that so hard to believe!" he snapped.
"B-But he was such a sweet and nice boy!"
"So I am sweet and nice?"
"Not YOU! That guy!"
"But that IS me… You can ask Di!"
"But you are a Raizada! He was a M-Mal… Something with 'M'!"
"Mallik?"
"Yes. That is it! Wait, how did you know?"
"Because I was a Mallik. I hated my father and after he died, I took up my Mother's maiden name…"
"Arnavji, why are you telling me this…?"
"My father was the reason your family broke apart…"
"What? What are you saying?"
And gathering all his courage, he told her.
After the story was over, Khushi was staring at his face.
"Khushi, please say something…."
"My Mother is alive…" she whispered.
"Yes…."
"Is that all, or is there something more…?"
"No. That's all…"
"I don't understand. Why did you think I'd scold you…"
Arnav blinked again. "But my father-"
Khushi looked at Arnav as if he had lost his mind. "Your FATHER Arnavji! NOT you! Why would I scold you for what your father did? You are not your father….! You are…. Well, YOU!"
Arnav was absolutely dumbfounded. "Kis mitti ki bani ho tum?"
Khushi snorted. "Pata nahi but definitely not with the mitti YOU are made of!"
"But Khushi-"
"Why did you tell me this? Did you think I would accept you because of this?"
"No I didn't."
"Then why?"
"I've had enough of lies between us in our relationship. I won't take another chance…"
"There is no 'us' Arnavji…"
Arnav flinched. "I know Khushi. But I am a human too, and I can't keep myself from hoping can I?"
He almost headed out when Khushi called him softly. "Arnavji…"
Arnav turned around and Khushi felt her eyes moisten as he she saw the hope in his eyes. "Yes Khushi?"
And before she could stop herself, she said "I love you…"
