Part 23- two steps forward, five steps back

"You should go home.. and check in with the police.. I already gave them my statement. You'll be needing to clean and organise too. But let me hire someone for you please, you're injured.. you can't do it yourself. Pepsi forbade me.. infact she's already cleared heaps for you."

What, when? Why? Armaan you did not ask that nice woman to clean my apartment.. that is so uncalled for.'

"okay firstly, don't scream.. this is still a hospital and secondly I did not ask her to do anything. She came up with the idea all by herself, infact it didn't even occur to me. All I did was give her the key."

And instead of discouraging her.. you handed her a key. Why would you do something like that?'

"oh shush.. enough of your I can handle everything myself crap! I've had enough of it and frankly you are making me so angry... She asked and I gave it to her, I don't ever question her judgement riddhima, she's like my mother. And for your kind information she treats you like her daughter too, so she wanted to do this for you and I won't come in the middle of this, especially since I know you'll get straight into it when you finally decide to leave the hospital grounds. That reminds me what are you doing here exactly now? It's been a long time.. im alive and about to get discharged. So go home now. BYE!"

Armaan was mad, he was beyond mad.. he was angry with the medications, with the restriction in his movements. With handling the cops all day.. but mostly at riddhima for the act she had pulled whilst he was away on his trip. He was fuming at present, and riddhima was actually for the very first time in her life scared of him. No one really yells at her ever, and even though technically he wasn't yelling directing at her.. she knew the real reason he was being such a cranky old son of a bitch.. But she had no guts to actually call him that.. she had to get on his good books again.. before she actually finished updating him on everything. She had yet only told him about him about one of the disasters.. she still needed to share her decision with him.. she owed him that much. The truth! But since what she has already told him being the minor part of the recent updates had gotten him so angry.. she lost the courage to keep going. Amraan when angry was a scary sight.. something she'd only just realised. He hadn't even let her complete her story, started lecturing her in the middle.. whilst the entire time she was thinking how she should have made him promise that he wouldn't interrupt.. and whilst she was at it that he wouldn't be angry. That's how all the smart people did it.. only if she had that much foresight. Shucks!

Just at that point she dared to look his way again.. only to look back down again.. seeing him looking directly at her. How could he be so angry she wondered.. no part of what she had told him so far should direct such anger.. care, sympathy maybe! But not anger. But alas! If she ever figured a correct response from a boy even after a full -fledged psychology degree it would have been a miracle. But she was no less, infact she was quite proud of the way she had handled a tough situation all by herself and she was going to crack that fact into his head.. boys are slow she figured, amraan more so... maybe her message got lost in translation and she needed to spell the message of the story to him. Yes maybe that was it, so she tried again! Only she had no idea just how much she was going to regret the fact that she tried to rub the same story that angered him so much in his face again.. just as he was struggling to give her the benefit of the doubt and calm down. In hindsight she probably should have kept her mouth shut the whole time and not uttered a single word. Infact she shouldn't have even been in the hospital after he gained consciousness, but armaan was complicating her life like no one's business and she was acting on impulse so well now she had to pay. Karma it was.. something she lived her life by.

Quit glaring at me.. im not scared of you!' she claimed proudly.

"Good, when did I say you were.. its just that you can't look at me in the eye for more than 5 seconds, that's all."

Shucks grumpy armaan.. scary glaring armaan and now sarcastic armaan.. oh yea he was mad.. maybe she should rethink her strategy and just apologise and agree that she is an idiot.. that'll probably make him feel better. But her goddamn ego wouldn't let her.. specially when in her head she was still right and brave and courageous and to her it made no sense that armaan was mad, so she tried one more time in to translate her message in clearer words this time.

I got hurt armaan and seeked medical aid and then I had a reaction so I seeked immediate assistance, I thought these were all things you've been trying to drill in my head for the past year.. then why is it that when I'm proudly telling you of my accomplishments you seem far from pleased.. infact you're yelling at me.' Riddhima was so nave to think that it was the fact that armaan did not understand the complexity of the situation was the reason was why he wasn't reacting as he should be, atleast according to her. Little did she know was that the message was not at all lost in translation infact he had heard and remembered each and every word she had uttered with utmost concentration and he was angry because he did not agree to what she deemed as accomplishments.. where she prided herself in handling the situation on her own.. he was all the more furious of this very decision of hers. More than that he was angry looking at her right now.. she looked so weak.. she'd lost atleast 5kgs in what? A week. That's not healthy specially since she didn't need to lose that weight in the first place. And so when she tried to explain her point of view again.. he lost it for good. Because he's tried to be reasonable with her for a really very long time and tried to explain to her calmly of how she shouldn't feel ashamed to seek out help yet she hadn't received that message as yet.. maybe that was the message that got lost in translation. So for the first time ever, Armaan Malik made Riddhima Gupta cry.. full blown cry in the hospital none the less and she walked out of there leaving him on the hospital bed... seeing that, he did call out to her from behind, but she didn't stop.. she didn't even turn around.. she walked as fast as she could out of there and into the first taxi she could find. What caused all this anger? What caused a such a huge fight? Well these were more a result of out of proportionate emotions on both their sides.. something that often happens.. something the human mind does to you when its subconsciously battling other things. For riddhima it was battling her insecurities and her insistent need to prove herself capable of handling things singlehandedly and for armaan it was his bugging self-consciousness telling him to finally come clean with his feelings.. but then he knew that she wasn't interested so he could never gather the courage to ruin their friendship.. but in times like these he felt like he owned her and that was the reason he got so angry.. because she treated him just like anybody else.

But he wasn't dumb, he knew exactly what she was going through aswell, she was fighting herself.. and he was shamelessly rooting for the weaker part of riddhima to win so that he gets a chance.. just like he got the chance when she told him of her miseries before he left and when he first gained consciousness. But just like any other time the stronger riddhima pushed down the weaker riddhima and makes her take decisions that hurt him. Earlier he used to think that she didn't know that she hurt him with her self-righteousness attitude... and probably she isn't aware to the amount of hurt she inflicts but he's sure she has some idea by now.. probably why she's been scared of his reactions. But for now he knew he couldn't do anything to help her.. other than watch her struggle through herself and whilst also being her support in whatever way she wants from him.. yes he loses his cool sometimes.. most prominent of them today.. but right now, the situation they were in.. the situation.. his anger.. his blunt comments on the truth led them here.. and so in an epiphany sort of way.. it became obvious to him that

Maybe being a friend means mastering the art of timing.. there is a time for silence.. a time to let go and to allow someone you care deeply about to hurl themselves into their own destiny.. and a time to prepare to pick up the pieces when it's all over.

So today he made a pledge that now onwards.. he won't push her.. he just won't. but he won't back down either.. the first opportunity he gets before its too late he'll come clean with everything.. no more hiding, no more being scared.

Because he was only too aware that if he doesn't help her get out of this phase, life will break her. . and nobody could protect her from that then.. and living alone won't either, for solitude will also break her with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. A fact that was true both for him and her.

Seeing Riddhima runt out of the hospital crying like that, Liam poked his head into Armaan's room only to see his face buried in his hands and hear him cursing his heart out. So he stepped inside quietly, but sensing his presence Armaan yelled Get the f**k out now!'

"well that would do the job now wouldn't it buddy" replied Liam.

At that Amraan finally emerged his head out of his hands, asking.. What do you mean smartass?'

Liam smirked, he knew Armaan was calming down from whatever had happened, "No I just meant that.. getting all red in the face, swearing and all the huffing and puffing will work just as well as glucose and all the drip we've given you to raise your blood pressure, after the severe blood loss. Thankyou Dr. Armaan, you can even treat yourself, you really are amazing." Liam was about to open his mouth to say more, but he had to stop to duck and save himself from a flying tissue box. "Yea mate! You actually needed to offer these tissues to someone else" He said picking up the box which now rested close to the door. He then continued "And just as a tip for the future, you may want to actually offer it nicely too, you can be quite mean. I'm a big boy I can handle it, but not everyone can." He finished his subtle message hinted largely with sarcasm whilst juggling the box from one hand to the other and sitting on the edge of his bed.

You saw her?' Armaan asked in a small voice.

"Well not clearly, she ran out of here at a bullet's pace, but I could still tell that she was crying. So now do I come to know which idiotic thing you did to make that poor little girl cry. Specially after everything that she's been through in the past week, Nina just told me."

Told you what?' Armaan cut in between.

"That she had an anaphylactic shock , she's still recovering you know.. go easy on her with the yelling and the swearing.. she doesn't deserve it for whatever the reason. Infact you should rest aswell. Whatever you both need to fight about you can do it later."

I didn't mean to yell at her, but she's so dense sometimes and oh it's not the fact that she got an allergic reaction that I'm mad at her. It's regarding her other problems, she has these issues..'

"Who deosn't armaan, you and I do too."

Yes, I know, I don't blame her for that... it's just that everytime we take two steps forward like we did just before I left, she takes 5 steps back. It's so frustrating. And she's in a serious problem, she had to take painkillers that caused the anaphylaxis shock in the first place because she got shoved into a door bruising her tailbone by her neighbour. She's in so much pain. She came to the hospital, you didn't see her?'

"Nah, I didn't know. Nina just recognised her from before and I overheard the nurses talking. From what I understand she intervened a domestic violence case between her neighbour, and the husband hit her."

She shouldn't have gotten in the middle of it anyways, she wanted to help well then she should have just called the cops.'

"Well apparently she did."

Yea, after she got beat up?'

"Yea they brought her here"

Figures, Riddhima Gupta would never go to the doctor's voluntarily, she could have called me! I wasn't in the middle of a jungle or outside this world or something. I was busy, but I could be reached. If she had tried that is. She called no one, not even my brother or sister in law, not even her other friends from her work or uni. She caught a taxi and she went straight home from here. She hired a lawyer for herself, whilst still trying to gather her strength after a huge blow to her health. She lost the case you know, she wanted a restraining order against him, she wanted him to move from the building, she didn't feel safe. This morning she found out she won't be getting that aswell, because that man had a cleaver lawyer and she was hardly looking after the case in her limited health. I know her, I know her finances, and after looking inside her home, I'm sure she's struggling with all the new expenses, the ambulance for when she had the allergic reaction, the hospital costs, the time off work and the legal representation. She didn't even have milk or bread in her kitchen, forget the other nonsense she usually keeps. She's been struggling so much yet she dolls up with lots of makeup and goes to some charity shin-dig. And now she gets her house broken into, yet she stands infront of me and tells me its nothing.'

"Why would she do that?"

Because she think she's mother Teresa, so thinks she can take on the world.'

"That's more like a superwoman type of behaviour."

No, that's more like her idiotic nature. I understand where it comes from but she's not alone anymore.'

"No? whose there for her?"

I am'

"Oh and who are you to her?, her dad?, brother?.." Armaan was giving him a glare at that. "Oh no sorry, you're just the guy who is in love with her, but posing as just a friend."

I'm tyring.' He said, whilst snapping a rubber band on his finger.

"Trying to do what?"

Reduce the distance, infact after the night I left I thought I broke through her wall.'

"And then you left, so she maybe built it up again?"

I can't be with her 24/7, she needs to make a decision and stick with it.'

"Or maybe she hasn't committed to anything to actually stick with.. have you ever actually come clean with her about your expectations?"

She wasn't there yet.'

"So what you wait? For how long?"

As long as she needs.'

"Then you can't complain right now... give her that time then!"

I will I promise, I want to... but I'll be honest aswell from now on.. I'm going to tell her want I want.'

"you are going to pressurise her into a decision!"

No, I'm going to give her an option.'

"And how exactly is that conversation going to go? You sit her down and tell her you like her but it's okay you can take your time.. I'll wait till you realise what you feel for me.."

Pretty much' Armaan shrugged his shoulders, but he knew how lame this sounded.

"How romantic!"

What do you suggest I do then?'

"I don't know, I've never handled a potential relationship like that."

It's not a potential, it's already a relationship.. we basically live together.. apart from the physical stuff or the moments of weakness where she backs off.. it very much feels like a happily married life to me'

"you want to marry her?" Liam was shocked.

I'm just saying I can see it happening.. not that I've made plans of proposing or anything... It's baby steps for us.'

"okay well good talk, I've to go on my rounds now so I'll try to meet you before you leave.. otherwise I'll come to visit at home okay? Now rest up."

Armaan was back home, his own home. He wasn't in the condition to go to riddhima's and sort out their fight. He had though texted her an apology right after Liam had left his room after their talk... when he had calmed his anger. She hadn't replied and he hadn't called.
