Chapter 1:
Taani stared out the window of the train waiting for her station to come. She could have taken a plane to Mumbai but she wanted to witness the real Mumbai train life. Surprisingly it wasn't as nice as she expected it to be, but either way she enjoyed it. She looked down at her phone and sighed it was already 5:30 and she didn't even let her brother know she was coming. It was a split second decision for her. At one moment her life was completely happy and she wouldn't want to change it for anything, but now she wishes she could go back and reverse her life. She opened her phone and saw a text message from her ex boyfriend Rohan that said 'sry pls talk to me let me explain'. Rolling her eyes Taani quickly deleted the text not wanting anything to do with him. Before her tears could fall Taani quickly wiped her eyes and forced a smile on her face. She had to be happy if not for herself for her family. Taani knew her mom was worried about her and Taani couldn't even successfully lie to her mom and tell her she was alright, her mom would see right through her. So instead of staying in her small town where gossip flared at every chance she took the first ticket she got to Mumbai and decided to live with her brother. Out of many girls Taani knew she was lucky enough to have a brother like Swayam who actually loved and wanted to take care of her. Looking outside she saw her station approaching and got ready to grab her bags.
Taani looked down at her phone and called her brother.
"Hello?" Swayam asked sounding a little tired.
"Bhai its Taani i'm almost at the station. Are you coming to get me?" Taani asked trying to make her voice cheerful.
"Taani are you okay?" Swayam asked obviously hearing the difference in Taani's voice.
"Haan bhai! I'm perfectly fine but bhai where are you?" Taani asked making sure her voice didn't crack this time.
"Taani yaar i forgot i'm sorry i was so busy-" Swayam started to say but he was cut off by Taani.
"Bhai don't worry i'll get a rikhsaw and i'll be home around 8:30." Taani said not wanting to stress out Swayam any more.
"Are you sure Taani? I can send the driver." Swayam said unsure of letting his sister travel in Mumbai alone for the first time.
"Haan bhai i'll be fine, okay bhai i'm at the station bye." Taani said hanging up. She grabbed her bags and got out of the station smiling. "Hello my new life. I'm ready to be here." She said making her way to the rikhsaws.
Swayam was sitting with Rey and Sharon trying to figure out what to do about their sixth dancer when he got a call from his sister.
"Haan bhai, i'll be fine, okay bhai i'm at the station bye." Taani said before hanging up.
"Taani, hello, wait taani! Great she cut the call." He said to himself before returning to work.
"Swayam what took so long? Who called?" Rey asked when Swayam sat down again.
"Nothing, what's happening with auditions?" Swayam asked really wanting to finish things quickly so he could see his sister after 8 years. He had a big family and he missed them a lot. He was so excited when he found out that his younger sister was coming to live with him.
"Nothing yet, none of them are good enough." Sharon said sighing.
Swayam gave a smile smile and said, "Let's call it a day and resume all of this tomorrow."
Everyone agreed and soon everyone left leaving Rey in the rehearsal room all by himself. Rey laid his head against the wall and sat down. He looked at his phone and opened up his images to Kriya his beautiful girlfriend, well now ex girlfriend. Kriya and Rey were great together, amazing, but Kriya had to move back to Dheradhun to take care of her sick mom. As much as he would have liked for her to stay in Mumbai he knew that she had to leave. He was happy that Kriya wanted to spend the last few days in Mumbai with him. But then when it was time for her to leave, he couldn't stand it. He was broken. She left and even though it wasn't something they both wanted it was something that had to be done. She broke up with him, knowing that a long distance relationship wouldn't work. Even though Rey didn't want to break up he knew that it was the only option they had. So now he's here, heart broken, trying to smile for his friends while hiding his own sorrow.
"I miss you Kriya." He whispered to himself as he looked at a picture of her. Sighing he closed his phone and turned around shocked to see his best friend Sharon standing behind him
"Rey it's not healthy." She told him not be able to see her best friend since childhood in pain.
"What?" Rey asked already knowing the answer.
"Pretending to be okay, slowly killing yourself by looking at her pictures. Rey i understand you loved her and she loved you but you need to grieve and you need talk about it." Sharon said.
"That's easy for you to say you never liked her!" Rey yelled at Sharon.
Normally Sharon would be ready with a fight but she knew Rey didn't mean to be rude, "But i love you Rey you are my best friend. All i'm saying Rey is don't give up on love. You never know you can find when you least expect it. Rey moving on is a part of life but so is grieving. You will always love and remember Kriya Rey, she was your first love. But don't give up and go into depression. You don't think we notice how depressed you have become, how much thinner you've gotten. Rey talk to me, talk to Swayam, talk to anyone, but don't keep it in anymore. I may not be able to understand but I can surely listen and be the shoulder you cry on.'
After her speech Rey couldn't take it and he pulled Sharon into a tight hug, letting the tears he had been stopping for so long fall. "Sharon I miss her, I know that Auntie was sick and it was necessary for her to go, but i can't help but miss her."
Sharon smiled and couldn't help but let tears of her own fall as she watched her best friend break down in front of her. "I know Rey, let it out."
Just in that hour Rey and Sharon sat there quietly in each other's company and Rey smiled and said, "Sharon you are really my best friend." Sharon hugged him again and they made their way outside where Sharon dropped Rey off to his house and made her way home.
Taani was finally home after a long two hours of traffic. When she got out of the rikhsaw she paid the man saying, "How much traffic can one city have."
Grabbing her bags she smiled making her way into her house. She rang the doorbell and smiled at Swayam as he opened the door.
"Hi bhai." Taani said. Before she could say anything else Swayam yelled, "Kaka can you please take Taani's bags inside thank you." and pulled Taani into a big crushing hug.
"I've missed you so much, you have grown up since i've seen you, god Taani i thought i told you that you were not allowed to grow up." Swayam said while crushing his sister into a hug.
"Bhai, i can't breathe." Taani said making Swayam release her. She laughed as they made their way inside the living room.
"Bhai this house is huge!" Taani said looking around.
Swayam laughed and said, "Yes and you even get your own room and closet."
Taani smiled a wide smile at Swayam excited for getting her own room.
"Taani your mom told me why you came. And i want you to know that you can always count on me to be there for you. So if you want to talk i'm always here." Swayam said seriously knowing that something happened with that no good Rohan.
"Bhai i just got here and you've started with your heavy lectures. Bhai i'm fine and i know that i can always count on you for everything. But bhai right now i'm so tired i just want to eat and go to sleep." Taani said feeling hungry.
Swayam laughed and lead her to the kitchen table where he had already ordered pizza.
After eating Taani went up into her room and left her bags there. She changed into her pajamas and sat on her window still. The one thing she loved about her room was the couch that was facing her window. She could sit on the couch and stare out the window in peace. She grabbed her blanket and made her way to the couch and got comfortable as she looked out at the night sky. Looking up she saw the moon and she smiled and closed her eyes. "I'll be okay." She whispered to herself before falling asleep.
Rey had changed and he looked out his window. He looked at the moon and smiled. The moon's presence made him feel better. It made him feel like nothing bad could happen. As a child during sleepovers Sharon and Rey would sit by the window and count stars. Once Sharon had asked him why he liked staring at the moon. And his response was knowing that the moon was always there, like a protector, made him feel like everything was good. He smiled at the memory and looked at the moon one last time. "I'll be okay." He whispered smiling at the moon before he went to sleep.
