Part 6

Arnav couldn't suppress the pleasure he felt when he realized Khushi was busy gazing at him from a distance and it suddenly became so difficult to concentrate on what Di was saying. His mind got busy concocting excuses to get up and go to her when he saw her rushing out towards her house. He threw a quick "I am just coming" at his Di and got up to follow her. Being the groom's brother never was such a nuisance before today, as almost everyone he came across stopped him to ask how he was. What he didn't know was that this was due to his status as the most eligible bachelor in town. When he finally made it to the other end his cell started to ring. Irritated, he was just about to pick it up when it went silent, however he was caught by surprise when he saw the name on the screen. "Why is KHushi calling me?" he wondered. "Is Khushi Kumari Gupta giving me a miss call to call me at her house?" the thought crossed his mind. Light came out of khushi's room as he approached the Gupta's house, he went in without knocking with all the familiarity of a friend who is welcome at any time. The sight that welcomed him wiped away the little smile that had been playing at his lips. Khushi stood in the middle of the room with a harassed expression on her face, she was shaking and was clearly terrified out of her wits. She wasn't crying but could be in a shock. Arnav assessed the situation in seconds and walked quickly towards her. "What happened Khushi? Was anyone here?" he stretched out his hands to hold her but stopped in time as he remembered how she had flinched away from him, he didn't want her to get more stressed than she already was. He tilted his head a little to take a closer look of her face and asked even more gently, "Khushi is everything okay?" She turned with a start and just stared at him, her eyes had a pleading look just like she had looked at him in the hospital. He further extended his hands and she just fell into his arms. She wasn't sobbing like she did in the hospital, Arnav somehow knew she wanted him to hold her and comfort her. That was exactly what he did. He wrapped his arms around her and tried to pacify her as she was a kid, "it's ok, it's ok….." he comforted her and planted a light kiss on her head. "If I could just stay in his arms forever…" he heard her say………..

His arms felt so right, as if she was meant to spend her life in them. "If I could just stay in his arms forever…" she thought to herself but only too loudly. She could still feel the light kiss he had planted on her head that had cooled her soul. She was then able to extricate herself from his arms and able to stand on her own. She looked at him quietly wanting to thank him for being there. "What happened?" he had asked and khushi wondered will he be able to ask anything else if she told him. She took a deep breath and turned around to lock her room, "Let's go! Everyone must be ready for the pheras." She tried to sound normal and started to leave only to be stopped by a hand that held her by her elbow. "Khushee.." she heard him say huskily and softly, "don't walk away like that, tell me what happened." Slowly she turned around, straightened her shoulders as if she was trying to give herself strength. "Right now it was enough for me that you came," she said a lot in a very simple sentence, using the most ordinary of words, "This is really not the time for it," She held up her hand to stop Arnav from saying anything more, "I just got afraid of the dark, I thought there was someone in the room, that's it!" she said in a tone that had the tone of finality which silenced Arnav from saying anything else. "I won't tell you even though I can't bear it only because it will break you."she thought forlornly.

Arnav could feel the sorrow radiating from her but couldn't do anything about it. He consciously walked closely with her to let her know he was there, to comfort her. They entered the Wedding canopy together side by side. To onlookers it was an awe inspiring view, him a Rajah tall and majestic, someone who could put everything right, her the Rani only made for her Rajah, the strength behind his actions, his pillar of support. Maybe they were looking into their future. They separated as they approached the Mandap where the festivities were about to begin. "Hmmm you went to get Khushi ji chotay!" teased Anjali. "Di please not now, it's Akash's big day, focus on him only! You know you are his Di also!" Arnav played on her sisterly emotions to take her attention off him and Khushi. He continued to steal glances at her to make sure she was alright, he didn't need to as she had already collected herself and was now smiling as if all was well. After a number of rituals of which Arnav had no idea and was least bothered to find out, the pheras, only ritual he knew of, started. Somehow he knew the vows of each phera, he stared at her and continued to shower petals at the couple taking the pheras. Somewhere at the end of the first phera she too chanced to look at him. Their gaze was locked as they both showered the petals on auto. He could still see the pain flickering in her eyes and all he wanted to do was find out the reason for it. Once he even felt her gaze go stone cold and he turned his head to see the reason that had caused it. All he saw was jija ji looking at Di.

Khushi quickly turned to leave the mandap at the end of the pheras, when she felt the light touch of his hand on her elbow, she tuned with an questioning look in her eyes, to which he replied, "just listen to what I have to say and then go," with this he held her lightly be the elbow and led her off stage to a relatively quieter corner. "umm I was wondering if you will be interested to work in my office, no no listen to the whole proposal and then say whatever you want," he stopped her from saying anything and continued, "I know you are not trained for the job but you managed even if for a few days previously, plus I can arrange for you to take online training related to your job, so you can earn and learn at the same time. What do you say?" paused Arnav to wait for her reply. He had been playing with this idea since morning when NK had pointed out that Khushi may no longer come so frequently to RM. Somehow the prospect didn't seem so welcoming to Arnav and a few phone calls and couple of searches at google had landed him with what he thought was a watertight idea! And now it looked even more important as he wanted to keep her near him, safe from anything and anyone. However, KHushi Kumari Gupta had the inquisitiveness of a little child who asks the most annoyingly pertinent questions. "Why do you want me to work in your office? Don't you have enough staff already? I didn't know of any vacancy in your office!" she went on and on. Arnav who had come up with an entirely new position and job description for her could just say, "Well I thought you might need one to support your family, yes your jiji is married now but you still have to see to your father's health and medicines." He tried to remind Khushi who at once had a thoughtful look on her face as she considered his offer. "Let me ask my family and then I'll let you know!" she said and walked away only to turn back quickly. When he looked at her she gave him a little smile as if thanking for easing her pain and then finally walked away taking along his heart with her. "What the……What did just went through my mind?" thought Arnav in a shock.
