Geet Handa had forgotten her bridegroom's name.
"I, Geet Katherine Handa, take thee'."
She bit her bottom lip trying to remember the name of the man she had met not so long ago, several days to be exact. Her mother did mention his name to her that dreadful morning when he first walked in through the French doors of their house. And now she was getting married to that man in the same living room where they had first met. She hadn't met him after their first meeting until a few minutes ago when she walked down to the living room with her arms around her stepfather.
Her stepfather was standing right behind her and she could feel him shake with disapproval. But, it was nothing new. He had been disappointed in her ever since she first walked in this house with her mother on their wedding day. Ever since that day she had tried so many times to win his affection but she somehow always seemed to have failed. She could never seem to have changed his mind about her.
She took a sideway glance at this bridegroom of hers. He was definitely bought by her stepdad's money. He was gorgeous. Atleast she wouldn't have to be ashamed to tag him along to all the social parties in the Upper East Side she frequented. Though she was born in Beverly Hills, LA, and spent most of her childhood there but since her father, Mahenderlal Handa, had passed away she was made to move to Manhattan because her mother simply did not want to stay there anymore.
Her mom being and American and her dad being an Indian, she was sort of the mixed breed. But since her mother was Christian and she had grown up with her mother taking care of her, she never really got to know about the Hindu customs that her father would have like for her to know. But, since she had always wanted a white wedding, here she was getting married the way she always wanted, but with an Indian. Just like her father.
She looked at the man again and noticed that he had jet black hair, and his chiseled features might have made him too pretty if not for that strong jaw and that constant scowl which had been there since she had laid eyes on him. Men with such brutal good looks had always appealed to her but she knew better. A man who sold himself for money was nothing worthy of her. But she reminded herself that she wouldn't have to be with him for more than a few hours, or at max one day. Even though she was not a person who would take such sacred vows lightly but she could not really spend the rest of her life with a man such as him. And so she erased her thought of flaunting the pretty man at her social gatherings. She would never!
She began again, "I, Geet Katherine Handa, take thee'"
She fell at a loss of words again as she tried harder this time to remember his darned name. Her bridegroom didn't even spare her a glance, let alone help her. She bit her lower lip again and rolled her eyes in frustration.
"Maan" spit her stepfather at her, and Geet could tell by the sound of his voice that he was clenching his teeth. He was never patient with her. And he called himself one of the country's best lawyers. She sighed.
"I, Geet Katherine Handa, take thee," she gulped for air, "Maan"'.she bit her lips and continued, "to be my awfully wedded husband'." She finished and was shocked at herself for what came out of her mouth. She heard her mother and stepfather gasp and her bridegroom finally looking at her.
His eyebrows furrowed at confusion to see if what he heard was right or was he just hearing things. He crocked one brow and scowled at her.
Geet tried to stop herself from smiling. She loved her sense of humor. But she knew that she would certainly be an awful husband to her and so she decided to give a damn about her.
Her bridegroom's hand moved to his pocket from where he got this small diamond wedding band out and held in his hands. Took her hand in his and said in a stern and menacing voice, "With this ring, I thee wed"
She could hear the father finishing, "and with the power vested upon me by the state of New York, I pronounce you husband and wife and now you may kiss the bride."
She fisted her palms and her nails almost dug into her skin. No way would she kiss this stranger who was now her husband. But she did not really have a choice did she? She closed her eyes and made a quick prayer, and felt herself pulled in a strong hold and a light peck on her lips. Boy was she glad! It was just a peck and her so called husband did not take any kinds of advantage of her. Sighing she opened her eyes to see him glaring at her, obviously from the grand mistake she made by calling him "awful." She chuckled.
They both turned to see her mother ushering towards them and engulfing them both in a tight hug. She seemed so happy. And so did her stepdad, since he finally now was rid of her, or so he thought he was. She only agreed for this marriage not to make her mother sad. But soon she will be back with her mother in this very same house and out of this godforsaken marriage.
"Don't they look beautiful together Charles?" The happy middle-aged lady asked her husband, who smiled in return and gave a small nod and said, "Yes they do Kate" and kissed her.
