PART 29
Its 10.30 and she finally gives up dialling him after hearing the same recorded monotone for the zillionth time.
'Sujal, where are you?' she utters as she realizes how much her heart urges to hear his voice and see him
She is in two minds as to what should she do'.how should she find him? When the phone rings. Kashish rushes towards the phone expecting it to be his call.
'Hello' she says, her voice brimming with anticipation
'Kashish' the other voice responds to the other side
'Mom?' her heart illicitly sinks hearing her mother's voice. She assumes she must have called as she must have been settled in her brother's place in US but then only realization struck her that her mother is unaware of the tragedy that had taken hit her that horrid day. Her throat becomes dry with fear.
'Kashish?' she comes back to reality with her mother's voice
'Haan bolo, mumma'
'Beta tum log thik to ho naa. Wo maine news dekhi ki tumhare wahan koi terrorist attack hua hai. Isliye phone kiya poochne ke liye kit u aur Sujal thik to hai naa'
Kashish's heart sinks to her stomach hearing mom's words
'Terrorist attack? Kahan?'
'Tujhe nahi pata? News mein dekh'
'Hmm'haan 'main dekhti hoon' She utters while struggling to find her voice
Kashish abruptly hangs up the phone and quickly reaches towards the TV remote. But her body freezes on thought of switching on a TV. She had avoided watching TV; especially news after that day coz of her fear that the news would only talk about the day she wants to forget. Now she was standing there holding a TV remote.
She shakes herself of her thoughts arguing to her fear that she has to do it. She has to know. Sujal might be in danger. She presses the power button on the TV and the screen comes to life in front of her. She swallows and navigates to a news channel which is showing devastating images of commotion. She reads the breaking news that says the attack had taken place at noon in a grand hotel. Her pupils dilate as her brain logics that Sujal could have been in the hotel at noon as he had an important meeting and but her heart opposes such thoughts vehemently. But her logics were fitting on pieces of puzzle and her heart could not come up with any reason. She only hoped; hoped with all her heart and sincerity that he would be fine; he has to be fine. She didn't even realize when she unconsciously wipes away the tears wetting her face while she switches off the TV and glances the watch which strikes 12.
She feels like crying her heart out. She feels lost without him but she knows it's no time to cry, it was the time to act. But what should she do? Should go the place of the incident? But if Sujal hadn't been there altogether and he comes back while she is gone? Should she inquire about him from someone, may be his phone's battery got down and he is too busy to make a call and she is worrying unnecessarily. She agrees to herself that inquiring about him would be a better option. But whom should she inquire from. One mind strikes her mind-Harsh.
Yes, Harsh it is. His best friend. Harsh must know about his whereabouts. She runs to her room to find her switched off mobile and plugs it to the charger, rambling about it to find the number. Finally, she finds it and makes a call to his friend.s
After two long rings he finally picks and pants 'hello Sujal?' With his tired voice
'Nahi, main Kashish'
He didn't sound much glad hearing her but then also she continues talking to him. She can't care less at this moment.
'Wo Sujal kahan hai? I heard some terrorist atatck'
'Oh tumhari neend ab khul rahi hai' He gives an acid taunt 'Dopahar se ussi ka pata lagane ki koshi sh kar rahe hain'
'Koshish? Matlab wo wahan?'
'Haan he went there for a meeting. Uska phone tab se unreachable hai. The authorities are also giving much information'
Her knees get weak and the phone slips off her hand
She sits down uttering his name with tears rolling down her cheeks. But something inside her shakes her and asks her not to give up on hope. She runs to her room without a second thought and gets her purse and rushes out of the door. She will find him. He is fine. Nothing can happen to him. If he can't come to him, she will go to him.
She comes down from the apartment stairs on the dark deserted road to catch a taxi to reach him. She is no more the fearful girl afraid of the world; she is a woman with a mission who won't let anybody come in her way; not even her fear or her past
She runs to the taxi stand on her foot and gets a taxi commanding the driver to take her to the accident area as quickly as possible. It was the first time in months she went out, went out in dark without covering her face, went out alone; first time she received a call, first time made a call, first time in months that she watched TV but she doesn't care; she doesn't care about anything. This very moment, she just cares about her husband-Sujal and his welfare and her goal to find him safe and sound.
She knows God had been unkind to her. She took it because she deserved it because of her bad karmas, because she knew she had hurt him. But God can't be so mean, he does not deserve it. That's unfair, so unfair on him. Not at all fair and she will fight, she will against it.
