PART - 4:
AUGUST 19, 2009
PLACE: MUMBAI
A message appeared on the computer screen, "HOT ON SCENT, COME QUICKLY."
The girl jumped up from her chair. "Aalekh, Abhi! Come here. Fast."
A group of people clustered around the computer screen. "Finally, we have been summoned." Remarked Abhimanyu.
"Yes. Finally we have been summoned. So what are we waiting for? Let's go." The girl who had called her colleagues said.
"Yes Ritika, we will start at once." Said Aalekh. In his silent yet authoritative way, he took charge of the situation. That was his specialty, he knew when to take charge and when to let go.

PLACE: DELHI:
Naina sat up on her bed rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "The start of another hectic day." She thought to herself. "God knows when this ordeal will end." Muttering to herself, she picked up a towel and moved towards the washroom.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rajveer woke to the shrill sound of the doorbell. Bounding from the bed, he rushed to the drawing room and opened the door. Prem was standing there dressed and ready to go out. It surprised Rajveer because there was no such previous plan.
"Good Morning Sir." Prem greeted him politely.
"Morning Prem." Rajveer reciprocated. "Are you going out somewhere?"
Prem didn't reply, instead he asked. "May I come in Sir?"
Rajveer understood and moved away from the door and sat on the couch. Prem followed him in and closed the door firmly behind him. "I'm sorry to disturb you so early in the morning sir, but '"
"something serious has cropped up." Raj smiled at his junior. "It's okay Prem. Tell me, what's wrong?"
In response, Prem took out a sheaf of papers from inside his coat pocket and quietly laid them in front of Rajveer on the table. Silence prevailed in the room as Raj went through them. Finally he asked Prem, "So what do you propose to do?"
"I think I should go and check this out."
"You are fully ready to do so." Raj remarked as he looked at Prem who was all dressed to go out. "But if all these documents are true, then it spells danger for us. "
"Its allright sir. I will handle this. You don't worry."
"But Prem ''"
"Sir, please let me go. If there is something wrong, then I will take care of it. After all, it's my job."
Reluctantly, almost against his wish, Rajveer agreed to let him go. "Fine, you may go but inform Aditi about it."
"Yes Sir." And Prem departed leaving Raajveer in a maze of conflicts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Naina came out of her room and proceeded towards the lift. She intended to snatch a short breakfast before hurrying to the fair grounds. She had been vacillating between her desire for Rajveer's company and her hesitation in disturbing him. Finally she decided to leave without him.
The lift stopped at the ground floor but Naina didn't come out of it. She was deep in thoughts. On an impulse, she pressed a button and the lift took her up to the fourt floor. She came out of the lift and went towards Aditi's room.
Standing in front of the door, she thought for a minute before ringing the bell. Even after waiting for five minutes when there was no response, she knocked on the door and was surprised to find the door open on her touch. "Where could have Aditi gone?" she thought to herself and called out loudly. "Aditi! Aditi!"
There was no sign of Aditi and the room was in a complete mess which was contrary to Aditi's habits ' or so Naina thought. Seeing her work in the stall, Naina had formed the impression that Aditi had the habit of keeping her things in order. "Maybe I was wrong." She thought to herself. The bed had not been made, the sheets were tousled, the bedside table was covered with papers, the laptop lay open on the centre table and some more papers were tossed carelessly on the bed.
"How can Aditi be so careless?" Naina thought as she picked up the papers on the bed intending to arrange them in a proper order when the first line of the top most sheet caught her attention. Curiously she began reading them. At the end of five minutes, Naina flopped on the bed with her hand held in her hands. "Good Heavens! What is this?"
The laptop beeped once and curiously Naina went to check it. The internet was connected and a new message had appeared on the screen. The message startled her and it took her some time to regain control. "But this means ... this means ... Rajveer is in danger." She muttered to herself. The sound of approaching footsteps cautioned her and leaving everything, Naina hid behind the curtains. Aditi came inside and pulled the door hard which got locked automatically. She was not in her usual bubbly self, her eyes were puffed and red and the last remnants of tears were still on her cheeks. She made her bed shedding a few tears and then went towards the washroom. Naina quickly crept out of her hiding place and softly opening the door sneaked out of the room taking care to lock the door.
As she went towards the lift, her mind was in a whirl. "Is this the truth?" she thought to herself. "So I was not wrong, my doubts were not baseless. But what do I do now? How do I tell Rajveer?"
So lost was she in her thoughts that she didn't notice when the lift stopped, when she came out and when she collided with someone. She didn't notice with whom she had collided, instead she murmured an apology and continued walking and would have walked on that way unless a strong grip wouldn't have pulled her into the cage of his arms. She came out of her trance to find herself in Rajveer's arms who held her securely and moved away a little to make way for the room service who were carrying an enormous amount of food.
"So much food! Who will eat all this?" Naina was so surprised that she forgot that she was held up against Rajveer.
"Must be some foodoholic, but what is up with you? You were so lost that you were not even watching your step." Rajveer was not ignorant about their situation but a naughty thought struck his mind and he kept holding her just to watch her reaction.
At his words Naina looked at him and became aware of her situation. She didn't blush, instead just smiled and gracefully stepped away. She tucked her right arm in the bend of his left arm and directed him towards the restaurant of the hotel. "Actually, I was so lost that I didn't notice that I had collided with you."
"My poor luck! It seems I have lost all my charm." He sighed and Naina started giggling. "There was a time when I was used to girls drooling over me and today ... today I'm not even noticed." He sighed dramatically and Naina started laughing.
He watched her sitting opposite her and laughing uncontrollably and was content to keep gazing at her. "Uff ... you are impossible Raj." She finally controlled herself but she was still grinning.
"Well, if you have finished laughing would you mind telling me what was wrong with you?" he asked her. It somehow pained him to see her so tensed and he wanted to wipe away all her pains and sufferings. He knew Naina was hiding something.
Naina became a bit depressed when she heard his question. "I'm worried about you Raj, but how can I tell you without giving Aditi away?" she thought to herself. Aloud she said, "Nothing serious, forget about it. You tell me how is it that you are up and about so early?"
Rajveer was a bit taken aback when she changed the topic so quickly, but decided to let the matter rest for the time being. "Actually, some problem has cropped up in our Delhi branch. And since we are here Mr. Singhania asked us to check it out. Prem is our mechanical expert, so I sent him there. He went out early in the morning and I had gone to the parking lot with him."
He stopped for a minute and then continued. "But to tell you the truth Naina, I'm worried."
"Why? What's the matter Raj? Is everything ok?" Naina was immediately alert.
"I don't think so. Prem came with a sheaf of documents this morning. He had managed to get it from this branch. There were many mistakes in the annual financial report. Also in some projects, the estimations were all wrong; somewhere it was over estimated and somewhere ..."
"...under estimated. Is that what you mean Raj?"
"Yes Naina. And when these problems have cropped up, it means someone from the higher officials of this branch is involved."
"Or are involved, we cannot be sure." Naina cut in.
"Yes, you are right, we cannot be sure. I had asked Prem to let me go, but he insisted on doing it himself. And if he finds out, I'm afraid those people won't let him off so easily."
"I see." It was all that Naina said, and then she again got lost in her own thought. Rajveer noticed it but refrained from breaking her chain of thoughts. Instead, he kept looking at her without saying a word. "How am I to tell you that you are in danger Rajveer? If Prem finds out something then also, you will be the one who will be the main target for them. " Naina thought to herself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All throughout the day, Rajveer and Aditi were busy in their work. Prem's absence had increased the work load on Rajveer and he kept on doing the maximum amount of work himself. Naina too roamed around the ground and kept away from Rajveer and Aditi all throughout the day. Rajveer wondered a few times if Naina was all right as she didn't put an appearance all the morning, but he didn't get a chance to check on her.
Naina was conversing with Lalit. Roshni and Mr. Solanki were busy in their stall. At this juncture Aditi came and joined them. "Naina, we have been waiting for you to join us for lunch. Have you forgotten or what?"
"Oh! Sorry Aditi. It is already 02:00 pm. I didn't notice the time. Let's go." She waved a goodbye at Lalit and left with Aditi.
"You were right Naina. Roshni is completely smitten by her employer." Aditi remarked on the way. She was not crying anymore, but the usual cheerfulness was missing from her face though she was trying hard to behave normally.
"I told you so." Naina said. "But that girl is intelligent; she has accepted the fact that she loves Mr. Solanki. Some people on the other hand just keep denying the fact even though it stares at them in the face."
"What do you mean?" Aditi asked a bit puzzled.
"Forget it, you won't understand. Tell me something, aren't you missing Prem?"
"Miss Prem!!! Miss that boring assistant manager of the company. No ways!!!" Aditi said.
They had crossed over to their stall and before entering, Naina decided to have the last word this time. "You know something Aditi, vehement denial always has one and only one meaning and that is a big YES. It is better for you if you accept it." She left Aditi standing there battling with her feelings.
"You are right Naina, I'm missing Prem. I'm missing him too much." She vehemently wiped off the silent tear which had rolled down her cheeks and went inside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The evening brought Prem along with it, but a look at his face told Naina that he had come with bad news. He had a meeting with Rajveer and Aditi in the stall itself, after which Naina found Rajveer in a much tensed mood. Aditi could make neither the head nor the tail out of the information and it was evident from her face. Naina was worried, she tried to put the two and two together, but she didn't know what Prem had said to Rajveer and Aditi and gathering news by just reading the face was a bit difficult.
That night, when the group of four finally made their way to the hotel, they were unusually quiet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The deep blue colored BMW came to a stop in the middle of the road. Ritika got down from the car and stretched herself. "So we have finally reached Delhi. Now what do we do now?"
"That is what I was going to ask. What do you say Abhimanyu?"
"We will have to wait for our next orders, very simple." The man named Abhimanyu said in a careless voice.
"Don't pretend as if you don't care. One phone call from the chief and you will be running to fulfill the commands." Ritika commented.
Aalekh came and stood behind the warring couple. "If you two have finished fighting, can we move on now?"
"Oh sure! But where do we go?" Sneha asked.
Aalekh's phone rang at that time putting further speculations to an end. Aalekh listened quietly for some time and then disconnected the call. He turned towards his colleagues. "We will have to check into Connaught Hotel as tourists and keep a watch on Aditi Sehegal, the assistant manager of Singhania group of Industries.
"Aditi Sehagal!!! Okay, then let's go."
The four climbed into the BMW and drove towards the Connaught Hotel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The dinner was a quiet affair with Rajveer, Naina, Prem and Aditi each lost in his or her own thought. They were hardly talking expect when they needed the other to pass some dish. But while Prem and Aditi were lost in their own world, the case with Naina and Rajveer was different. Naina had noticed the unusual glum which had decended on the party and being a very astute girl, she had guessed the reason for this. Rajveer on the other hand had noticed that Naina was intrigued and was carefully watching each of them. When she finally turned to look at him, he could see the questions in her lovely hazel eyes. It took an immense self control on his part to stop himself from saying anything. Instead, he gestured with his eyes to calm her and grasped her right hand under the table and gave it a light squeeze. Naina understood his meaning and nodded in agreement. She felt happy that Raj could understand her questions even without her having to put them into words.
Just then Rajveer noticed the occupants of their neighbouring table. Three people were seated there enjoying their time, talking and laughing with each other after having placed their orders. He felt something was wrong about them but before he could place it, the door of the restaurant area opened and Lalit and Roshni came inside. While Roshni joined Mr. Solanki for dinner, Lalit looked around. The restaurant was packed to the capacity. Mr. Solanki was sitting in a table for two and seeing him enjoy his time with Roshni, he didn't want to disturb them. He knew Mr. Solanki hadn't noticed him standing there and Roshni had ignored him on purpose. She wanted to spend this time with Rajesh undisturbed. He decided to order for the dinner in his room and turned to go when somebody called him from behind.
"Excuse me."
"Yes." Lalit turned back and found himself face to face with a stranger.
"Hi! My name is Abhimanyu. I guess you didn't find a seat. If you don't mind, you can join us for dinner."
"Oh! It's okay. I can always have it in my room." Lalit protested.
"Please don't be formal. We will only be too happy to have you with us." Abhimanyu said and he brought Lalit with him to their table. Lalit saw Rajveer looking at him and smiled and was pleasantly surprised when the latter reciprocated. His boss was not friendly with their rivals and so he hadn't expected this man to be so good natured. He was recalled to his table when Abhimanyu nudged him. "Aren't you listening?"
"Oh! I'm so sorry. What were you saying?"
"He was asking you your name. By the way, I'm Sneha and he is Aalekh." She pointed to the person sitting next to her.
"Hello! My name is Lalit. ... Lalit Sahani."
"Hi Lalit." Sneha smiled at him. "So what are you doing here?"
"Actually, I'm here for the Industrial fare. I work as a manager in the Solanki enterprises."
"Oh! I see. I suppose your work must be very demanding." Aalekh put in.
"Well, every work is demanding. But I think, if you love your work, then it is not a trouble."
"I agree. Are you listening Abhi? This is called dedication towards one's job." Sneha said in a mock serious way making both Lalit and Aalekh stifle a smile. Not just these two, but even Naina and Rajveer had to control their laughter.
Abhimanyu simply grunted in dissatisfaction and looked away. Lalit tried to change the topic. "So what brings you three here?" he asked.
"I'm a computer expert and I'm here for a seminar. Abhi is my colleague and a friend." Sneha supplied.
"I'm her elder brother and have accompanied her." Aalekh said.
Rajveer and co had finished their dinner. So they got up and left. On the way, Raj turned once to look at the three. Naina nudged him to get his attention. "Any problem Raj?"
"No... I don't think so." He replied thoughtfully and then went out of the restaurant.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So it is settled now. We will take turns to keep a watch on Aditi."
"But why Aditi, Abhi? What will happen to her?" Ritika questioned.
"What's wrong with Aditi?" Abhi was confused.
"She seems to me to be a bit dumb." Ritika voiced her opinion.
"A bit!!! You must be crazy. She is completely dumb. I don't know who made her..."
"Sneha, shut up." Aalekh commanded. "I agree with Ritika. But then who do you think would be a more preferable person?" he asked after a while.
There was complete silence for a while. Everybody was lost in his or her own thoughts. They seemed to debating with themselves. Finally Sneha said, "According to me it has to be Prem, nobody else."
"And why not anybody else? Why not Rajveer for a change?" A voice said from behind.
"Ashank!!! What are you doing here?" Sneha was surprised, so were the others.
"You shouldn't have been here Ashank. What if somebody sees you here?" Abhimanyu was concerned.
"Don't worry Abhimanyu. I have just talked to the chief. I have been granted the permission to be here with you. And I also heard what Ritika said. That's exactly what the Chief told me. We have to keep a watch on Prem as well." Said Ashank.
"All right, then we have to divide ourselves into two groups. Sneha and Aalekh, you keep a watch on Aditi and Ritika and I will take on Prem." Abhimanyu divided the work.
"And I'll take on Rajveer." Ashank completed the discussion, or so he thought, but what happened after that left everybody surprised.
"Rajveer!!! And pray tell me who asked you to keep a watch on Rajveer?" Ritika questioned.
Ashank was taken aback by the force of her words. "What do you mean?"
"I mean did the chief ask you to keep a watch on Rajveer?" her voice was cold, chilling to the core. Ritika very seldom shifted to this nature of hers, but when she did, nobody had the courage to face her. Ashank hesitated a bit and then answered, "No."
"Then you don't have to keep a watch on Rajveer." Ritika bit out the words.
"But why Ritika? If Prem and Aditi are to be watched, then Rajveer is also in the same category. He being their boss is the main suspect." Abhimanyu pointed out reasonably.
"No, he is not. Besides, he can take care of himself. Also, chief didn't ask you to spy on Rajveer." Ritika was firm but so were the others.
"But in that case, the chief didn't say that we cannot keep a watch on Rajveer." Aalekh said.
"So you all are not going to listen to me. If the orders from chief can stop you, then that is what will happen." She tossed her head and walked away from there.
"One second Ritika." Ashank called her from behind. "Why are you so touchy and possessive regarding Rajveer? Is it that you have fallen in love with him, and now you don't want to accept his involvement in this?"
"That is none of your business. You keep your wild guesses to yourself." She replied acidly and walked away.
"What's wrong with her?" Ashank was truly surprised.
"Whatever may be the matter with her, you have no right to hit at her the way you did." Sneha who had been a silent spectator all through this commotion, now turned towards Ashank.
"That's not what I meant Sneha." Ashank protested. "I just..."
"Oh stop it." Abhimanyu cut in. "Stop this argument right now and get back to your work." And he too walked away in huff.
"Gone case." Sneha murmured. "This is what I was afraid of."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Will you tell me what is bothering you?" Naina burst out at Rajveer.
"Even I don't know what is wrong. But Prem has further confused me." Raj admitted.
"I can see that. But what did he say?"
"Naina, before I tell you anything, would you mind answering a question?"
"Sure, fire ahead." She leaned back on the couch and waited expectantly.
"I heard that you are a crime reporter, is it true?"
"Whew!!! News travel really fast. So who played the BBC this time?"
"Roshni was talking to Mr. Solanki and Aditi overheard it."
"Ohh!!! So is it a crime to be a crime reporter?" she smiled naughtily.
"Don't twist a simple sentence into a complex one." He was irritated.
Naina didn't reply, simply looked at him with a naughty glint in her eyes and waited for him to continue. She wanted to know what more lies were in store for her or had Rajveer decided to come out clean. However knowing Rajveer, she was sure that she was not going to get the truth out of him. She waited to hear his story so that she could work on it and get the snatches of truth out of it. She was not a cryptologist for nothing. Codes and cryptology were her forte and it helped her to get the truth out of even puzzling and boring conversations. She firmly believed that every person had some intention in his or her conversations and she had trained herself to read their inner meanings. But just then Rajveer got a call on his mobile and he couldn't speak to Naina. It was Naveen on the other end. Naina wrinkled her forehead as she heard the name, but refrained from commenting. After five minutes, when Naveen disconnected the call, Raj had additional reasons to worry. Naina understood his situation. "Raj, I think you had enough for a day. You need some rest."
"Oh!!! And here I was planning to tell you something important, but it is already late now."
"I know. Whatever you have to say can wait for tomorrow. Right now, you need rest. See you in the morning. Goodnight." And without waiting for a reply, she went out of his room.
"Is she really a crime reporter or a criminal? I think there is more to it than what meets the eyes. I'll have to find out about her." Rajveer decided to himself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ritika stood in front of her chief. "Ashank wants to spy on Rajveer. But there is something which you should know about Rajveer."
"Unless it is something which I already know." Her chief smiled from the couch. The room was in darkness. Only a very small might lamp was switched on at one end of the room which threw faint light on Ritika. The other occupant of the room was in complete darkness. Ritika could sense the amusement in the person's voice and she was intrigued.
"Excuse me, but what do you know about Rajveer?"
"Need I tell you?" And then the person said something which left Ritika in a shock. "How ... how did you find out?" she stammered a bit.
"I'm not your chief for nothing Ritika. Don't forget that I have trained you in the art of detection. I should be at least two steps ahead of you. Besides, when I took you into this job, I had personally run a thorough check up about you and your background. And you did the same for the rest. You should have known that I'm aware of your history."
Ritika felt as if she was now free from all worries. "So do I tell Ashank to spy on Rajveer?"
"No, ask him not to do any such thing. It would be sheer stupidity."
"Then what do you plan to do? Don't tell me you are going to put your head in danger."
"I need to chalk out a plan for that. But before that, have you set up a temporary head quarters?"
"Yes. I personally arranged everything after we checked into the hotel. As directed by you, we have set up the HQ in your bungalow."
"Yes, it is strategically placed, right in the heart of the city." There was a few minutes silence, and then the person looked up. "It's okay Ritika. You may go now. You shouldn't leave your post for so long. Besides, Abhimanyu will be waiting for you. He would be getting restless. The way Ashank questioned you, I'm sure it would have had some effect on Abhi. But knowing him, you will have to sort it out on your own accord. He won't ask you anything."
Ritika smiled a little and went out of the room.
