THE TEAR DROP

"If she had no plans of coming, why make us wait? Surely the King has more important demands on his time!"

Even as he uttered the words, Ranaji could not help feeling secretly relieved! Thank God he was not going to be put through this ordeal! When she had sought him out that morning and demanded to be heard, he could not help but despise her for her brazenness! She had the audacity to don a mask of innocence even after the scheming and manipulating that she had done, ably assisted by her money lender father to whom the palace was unfortunately indebted.

Whatever had his family done, how could they have run up such a huge debt? The royal coffers had been full when he had left to fight the war! How did they manage to deplete all of it and then pile on a massive debt besides? Was it his mother's weakness for the finest of silks and champagne? Was it his uncle's gambling streak and his predilection for nautch girls? Was it his aunt's greed for jewellery by the kilo? Or was it Lakshvardhan? However or whoever, the fact was that the palace had run up a huge debt and he was the chip his mother had bargained away to secure a debt waiver. For all that he had ranted and raved against her decision, he knew he had not much of a choice left when he learnt that the summer palace had already been lost to the British. How was he to secure the kind of resources to pay off Seth ji and ward off a law suit? How else was he to secure the welfare of his people, who would be weighed down even further by double taxation if he refused to barter himself away? So he had gone ahead and laid his head on the block!

The identity of his intended had come as a nasty surprise though! When he had lifted the veil albeit reluctantly, he had been shocked beyond measure to see those innocent eyes looking up at him coyly. Surely it could not be! Not her, not the mystery girl! He had labeled her mystery girl because she seemed to have a knack of popping up in his life with alarming regularity ever since he had returned, although he had no real clue of her identity! In six years, his dreams had been filled with visions of Sulakshana and his nightmares with the horrible images of war! That night after he had rescued her from the river, she had surfaced once again in his dreams! She had been screaming out for him to rescue her, he had been swimming hard to get near her, all he could see were those haunting eyes but something kept him back, something made sure he did not reach her in time. She drowned right in front of him and he had watched helplessly and he had screamed in horror and woken up sweating profusely. He knew he had saved her and yet he could not help his sense of disquiet. Why was it her face that had surfaced in dreams that had never had anyone but Sulakshana grace them? He had put it down to stress and anxiety and gulped down a glass of water before forcing himself back to sleep!

He had not thought too much about her until he bumped into her again, at the temple this time! Seeing her brought back the memories of past encounters and the vision that he had seen in his dream! He had stood transfixed before he realized that she held on to Sulakshana's bracelet. He had been struck by the hopeful look in her eyes, the innocence in her face and decided impetuously to gift her the bracelet. That night again, he had dreamed of her! This time the dream involved her handing the bracelet back to him and then putting her hand out, as if asking him to put it on her wrist. He had been in a quandary, wondering how to refuse the plea in her eyes with a part of him wondering if he should just go ahead after all! Then he had heard Rajmata's voice pronouncing what was nothing short of a death sentence, that he was to be married to the Seth's daughter and he had reluctantly stepped back while she had looked at with him with a stricken expression. He had woken up sweating once again. Why had he dreamed of her a second time? As if it was not bad enough that he was betraying Sulakshana's memory by marrying the Seth's daughter, why did he have to dream of some nameless girl, why did he have to give her a place even in his dreams?

When he realized that his betrothed was none other than the vision that had haunted his dreams, he was appalled. That he had been fooled! That he had been taken in by a pair of innocent eyes! That he had let them slip into his dreams not once but twice. While in reality, they were anything but innocent. Behind the facade lay a mind that was replete with guile and avarice. She had fooled him, wormed her way into his subconscious even while her father had used the debt his family owed him to buy her a ticket to royalty! That he had betrayed Sula's memory even subconsciously with this woman who was nothing but a scheming witch! He had been filled with contempt and a burgeoning rage ever since. A rage that had hit its peak when he saw her in Sula's attire. He had exploded like a volcano and behaved in a manner that he was not quite proud of!

Was this her way of humiliating him, for punishing her with rough words and actions the previous night? Should he feel angry that she was humiliating him? Or should he feel grateful that she was sparing him the hypocrisy of going through a ritual that held no meaning for either? He wished he could stand up and tell the audience that it was a big sham but he could not! The world might think a King was all powerful, he could hardly tell them the King did not even have the right to express his emotions freely and frankly. He had a lineage, a tradition to uphold and to hell with things like personal emotions!

He came back to the present when he heard Swarna announce that the Queen had arrived. He looked up at her and she looked right back. She looked him directly in the eye as she walked down the grand staircase. Not once did she drop her gaze, her head held proudly high. Her face was wiped of all emotion, no hint of the angry and harsh exchanges of the previous night!

She came and took her place on the throne beside him and the royal priest announced that the bichiya ritual would be carried out. He steeled himself to the pain that it would cause him to go through with this. It symbolized a certain intimacy that he would never grant any other woman but Sulakshana. He felt like screaming that aloud but he knew he did not enjoy the luxury. He bent down and put his hand out for her foot.

For a second, nothing happened. Was she going to humiliate him in public after all? A heartbeat later, she lifted her dainty little foot and placed it on his palm.

He fitted the bichiya onto her second toe.

Wait, did he feel the wetness of a tear drop on his palm?

He looked up involuntarily only to be met by eyes as dry as the desert sand! Her face was an expressionless mask.

He rose and she did too!

She greeted the audience with folded hands, asked to be excused in a soft, polite tone and then left without another word!

She came, she did what she had to do and then she left!

Her reluctant husband could do nothing more than stare at her retreating back, wondering if he had been spared or indeed punished!

Part II

Was the old bat out of her mind!

Badi Rani Ma glared at her so fiercely that Raj Mata wondered if she had maybe spoken her thoughts aloud!

"The chit of a girl! How dare she walk off like that! This is what I was saying! Her lack of royal upbringing! No royal consort would have walked away leaving the King standing!"

"She did explain that she was unwell. I don't see why you should have a problem when Rana ji did not!"

"You have pushed him to the point where he can say nothing! What do you expect? For him to kick up a fuss in public and snivel over the fact that his wife cannot be bothered to be civil to the gathered relatives and guests! My grandson has better upbringing!"

"Thank you for the compliment, Badi Rani Ma!"

Let me complete my sentence. Despite you, I was going to say. The genes of the Singh Deo parivaar are to be thanked!"

Rajmata smirked at that!

"But of course...a parivaar that has yielded a son who will not stop at scheming to kill his own nephew and a grandson who will prey on the royal help instead of paying attention to his wedded wife...!"

"Priyamvada...shut up now!"

"Then don't provoke me, Badi Rani Ma! I am not the one to take insults lying down!"

"And you expect me to! That chit of a girl has insulted me. I insist she be punished!"

"Aren't you getting a bit out of line here, Badi Rani Ma? I would like to remind you that you are our honored guest. And guests neither have the authority nor the power to hand out punishments to the Queen of this land!"

"How dare you, Priyamvada!"

"I dare, Badi Rani Ma. Because I have fought a hard battle to protect this kingdom and the King from scheming usurpers. I will not have you trying to denigrate the position of the very Queen, who will strengthen my son's hands in administering justice to his people and hopefully bless this lineage with an heir at the soonest!"
"Heir? You must be out of your mind! Rana ji is not going to forget Sulakshana any time soon!"

"Meaning you won't let him forget her any time soon. You will not cease to plot deviously to prevent my son from embracing a life of happiness and be blessed with progeny!"

"Happiness...Indravadhan will never be happy with anyone other than Sulakshana. He will never forget her!"

"Sulakshana is dead, Badi Rani Ma. My son is alive and cannot have a ghost for a royal consort!"

"And so you picked up the first piece of dirt you could find on the streets!"

"Badi Rani Ma...you are crossing your limits. It is the queen you refer to! I would urge you to speak respectfully!"

"You are giving me lessons in respect! In defense of a chit of a girl who lacks manners and respect herself! She is unfit to be my grandson's wife, forget the Queen of this kingdom!"

"Badi Rani Ma, I must respectfully ask you to leave before your venom ruins the chance at happiness that this palace has finally gotten!"

" How dare you, Priyamvada...!"

"Rajmata, Badi Rani Ma...call me Rajamata!"

Rajmata swept out of Badi Rani Ma's chambers angrily. How dare that old hag try to create problems all over again! Just when she was heaving a sigh of relief that the bichiya ceremony had gone off somewhat uneventfully.

Her livid countenance softened when she saw the Queen waiting for her in her chambers.

"Rani ji...how is the headache now...shall I get you some medicine from the royal vaid?"

Gayathri stood up and looked her straight in the eye as she spoke.

"Rajmata, I am here to take your leave!"

"Leave?"

"I am going to my father's home!"

Rajmata was stumped. Just when she thought she had it all under control, things were going bad in ways she hadn't imagined.

"You can't...you just came back...but why..!"

Her words came to a halt and she found her gaze dropping faced with Gayathri's penetrating eyes. She needed no answers to her questions...!

"Rajmata, I mean no offence but my coming to you is somewhat of a formality...I have already asked for my brother to come with the car...!"

"But why...I mean..the royal carriage...the car...!"

"Its fine, Rajamata...I would have walked but what if I am attacked once again...I wouldn't want to put the King to the trouble of having to rescue me once again...so I thought to summon my brother...he is already here!"

"When will you be back...?"

Gayathri merely looked at her, folding her hands respectfully before she turned away and exited the room...!

Rajmata slumped down on the nearest chair. How did she deal with this now?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Rana ji...Badi Rani Ma is leaving the palace in a huff!"

The attendant blurted out in a half excited and half scared tone!

What was this new drama now? Just when he thought he could have some peace!

Ranaji strode out of his chambers in the direction of raised voices.

Kunwar Chacha ji and Chachi ji were trying hard to convince Badi Rani Ma not to go!

"What will become of us if you leave...please don't go!"

Badi Rani Ma was having none of it.

"I will not stay a minute longer in this palace after the barrage of insults I have had to face since morning!"

Ranaji placed a placating hand on her arm.

"Badi Rani Ma...you must not think of leaving me...who dared to insult you, if I may ask...I will have them punished immediately...!"

Badi Rani Ma looked at him with flashing eyes..!

"All I did was tell your mother off for bringing such an arrogant and disrespectful girl into the palace and she ordered me out! To be insulted in front of my relatives in the morning! They were asking me how she dared to walk out while the court was still in session...! I had no answer to their taunts. And then your mother ordered me to leave the palace because I asked her to rein in her daughter-in-law!"

Just then, Rajmata walked in. Rana ji glared at her fiercely.

"Why do you do this to me? I have followed your every order. Why do you separate me from those I seek solace from?"

Badi Rani Ma gave her a triumphant look.

Rajamata looked from Rana ji to her mother-in-law.

" I am sorry, Badi Rani Ma...I was out of line when I spoke to you earlier...you must not leave the palace of course...I apologize to you...on my own behalf and on behalf of Rani ji...!"

Kokila seized on the opportunity.

"That is unacceptable. It is Rani ji who has insulted Badi Rani Ma..she must apologize...nothing else will suffice...!"

Rana ji looked at Badi Rani Ma. She remained silent and that gave him hope.

"Badi Rani Ma...is that all it will take to convince you...? Then I will ensure that Rani Gayathri Devi apologizes to you as well...anything to make you happy...and to keep you here!"

He clapped his hands to summon an attendant.

"Inform Rani Gayathri Devi that Ranaji has requested her presence in Badi Rani Ma's chambers...!"

The attendant bowed respectfully before saying in a soft voice.

"But Rani ji is not in the palace, she has left with her brother!"

A shocked Ranaji turned to his mother.

"When did she leave? And without telling me?"

Rajmata gave him a penetrating look before saying,

"That hardly matters, Rana ji...what matters is ensuring that she apologizes to Badi Rani Ma so she won't leave the palace...!"

"What would you have me do?"

"The family would not appreciate if we sent word for her, Rana ji. You must go personally to fetch her. I am sure you wouldn't mind doing it for the sake of Badi Rani Ma...and am sure Badi Rani Ma won't rest in peace until Rani ji delivers that apology..!"

Ranaji glared at her but Rajmata was most composed.

"Go and fetch your Queen, Rana ji...this palace needs her right now!"

Wonderful OS
Majestic display by Gayatri, the drop of tears cleansed her dejection but made sure Ranaji carried the burden...

Her reluctant husband could nothing more than stare behind her back, wondering if he had been spared or indeed punished!

Beautifully worded

Thank you...did Ranaji really feel the tear drop...or was it a figment of his imagination...he will never know...but that tear drop will weigh heavily on his mind...and force him to ask questions that he would prefer not to ask...for fear of what the answers would be!

You've portrayed this scene just like many of us truly wanted it to be. And when the words are right, it's just perfect! Kudos.

The subtle beauty of this OS.. and how detailed it was described got me visualizing this scene... it feels so real and I can see it, as if I'm actually there...very well written👏

And that end of the OS was just perfect.. nothing was exchanged in terms of words b/w them but there was a communication which was beyond words... You captured their gestures so very well...

The Gayathri of your OS punished RNJ without even trying to punish him.. She was just being herself...and there wasn't any need of doing.. more than that anyway..

I actually can feel that tear drop.. and the emotion underneath in it..

You should write more!

Fab display of emotions. 👍🏼
The drop of tear rana imagined , or that actually made its way out of her deserted eyes. Loved the way its written ..
And rana dreaming about her was actually a very good addition ..
Once I was wondering why ranag don't even think once about the girl he met in library ..saved her then at mandir in show ..
But u filled that loophole here
