I think the first episode was underwhelming because of the whole hype surrounding the serial the week before.

I started watching for DD's sake, but now I do like the entire set up, the star cast, as they are being introduced. Note that each day, we get to see a new member who will add to the multiple narratives, I think or I hope they are planning to show us.

About DD specifically, she was very good yesterday, her recitation of the poem was unhurried and beautiful. Plus, her interaction with her mom, I was esp waiting for since she has had many such in MB. I found it different. it would be really interesting to watch a seasoned (seasoned with saas bahu, love hate relationships)TV actress, mature into an actress who is capable of change. I think DD will do it. yes, it is a challenge because she has done two romantic dramas and this is her third.

About the period referencing, it peeps through in the dialogues, and yes, I do agree, that should not have been the peg because it is impossible to sustain that era in a daily soap.

Tm and others let me tell u about my experience I mean about my mom and her sister .
My moms sister was 12 years elder and she used to ride horses and my mom too used to ride along both used to go to libraries and because they were landlords daughter ppl used to visit there place and my granny used to sit to solve there problem used to have food with the workers and distribute grains etc...
My mom used to ware pants because she was pampered and had a cycle too as a teenager too she was naughty climbing a tree .
So those time ladies were definitely not so back ward as ppl are saying they knew history more than us .
Only villagers were backward but landlords daughter were much ahead of times u know what my mom sister did her 10 th standard with high distinction and her cousin is doctor by profession.
Forget that director is doing awesome job he is somewhere near to 1940s era but every thing can't be perfect see devdas movie u see many flaws even jodha Akbar serial u see flaws it's not Hollywood movie were they can recreate with the budget they have for TV it's seems perfect .
Just allow the show to breathe no article no media is pointing just minute details about the show as u ppl are doing .
Wait and watch

Exactly ..Devdas was written in 1900-1901 and it wasn't even dealing with the higher-class urban women, in fact SaratChandra Chattopadhyay mostly focused on the non-progressive part of Bengal still we find so many educated women and in Tagore's novels we see middle-class and higher-class women who were highly educated, strong willed and outspoken. It was much before 1940s.

I don't know why people think no girl in that time was literate. I agree the percentage of educated people were very low that doesn't mean no girl ever studied a word. Mother of my grandmother studied in English medium school when in 1940s my granny was already adult .. so you can understand the equation .. even Bollywood films of that era reglected the society where in many cases we see literate and independent women.

Anyway, my comment was only focusing the social scenario of women then that has been questioned .. I can't comment on the language that is used as I am not a Hindi spoken person but the royal family should have some conversation in top-notch British English as royal families then was adapting British culture. From a long time they tried to fit in the good pages of Brit gov and was highly influenced by their sophistication. However, they didn't leave their own royal habits though.

Do u watch Hollywood movies?? Let's take Captain America for example. Have u noticed how the whole movie has a gloomy or brownish touch to it? Especially when Captain is just an ordinary man...
The whole setting has been done very dim...they wear shades of different brown..or cream coloured white.

Even if u look at pictures of back then...they r not truely seen as black and white I would say...I say they are more faded.

Now I got the same feeling as u...however the way I reasoned it that a show can't really have that dim..and gloomy faded feeling. They have to have bright colours as its a Love story...and I believe due to these bright colours it makes us feel as if it's set in today's time...

i also felt that something was missing but then with some reflection i realised that all my memory of the 1940 is from old photos and films which were in the brown faded version, even restored ones look old, but what i am seeing on tv is full HD color version so its normal thats why i am feeling the difference
in the image below you can see there is a group of people at the bottom and this image was taken in full color for the promo video (you can see the original picture below also)

another example of a vintage photo, this looks like the 1940's but we all know it new 2015

as for the talking style, they surely dont talk like that in mordern world with all those words and esp in 3rd person, if people did like that it would be raining gold for shrinks

and as for set design, well we (those who were forced to watch the serial because back in those days internet wasnt avaliable to see other shows) all have been branded with the ekta brand it now its our bench mark, its like those memory smell or taste that we have been imprinted since very early age and now when we taste or smell something that doesnt even look like the original version we think of the original version, thus the sets, since out first impression of lavis sets were from ekta serials now we always associate lavish sets with the ekta; thats how it is

if there is another show with 6 friends we will always think of the original friends, dont know about others but many medical shows remind me of ERšŸ˜†

The Education Act by Lord Bentick in 1835 ensured that english Education took predominance in India.. by that Act the fund set aside in Inda for education was to be spent solely for English education . not just that only those who knew english was to be appointed in government services. (History lesson Std 5). so I guess this was inspiration enough to Indians to learn English.
Reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy raised their voice against social evils like Sati and female infanticide. He also advocated education for women.
You forget many of our freedom fighters knew English.
