Kalpi was sitting in her new office. She is working as an Assistant Manager in NM Constructions. She still remembered the day, when she had given this interview.
It was the day she had lost the most important thing in her life, her father's love. It was the day her father had found out about her secret marriage to Raghav. It was the day when even the skies had cried for her. It was the day she had become a walking talking corpse. She had taken a decision, that she would forget everything that had happened in her life, and move on. She knew she loved her parents and she loved Raghav, but she realized that no one really loved her. It was that day that she finally realized that her mom would never really love her, and would always use her as a tool to fulfill her ambitions. Her father would only love her as long as she was a perfect daughter who always tried to please him . He would never forgive her if she followed any of her dreams which he disapproved of. And finally Raghav, her one true love, who said he could not live without her was still with Pakhi. He might not look to be in love with Pakhi, but seeing them together did not feel as if he was taking any kind of revenge on her. She realized that it was she who had lost everything in this game of love and she did not want to be a loser anymore. Now she wanted to be successful for herself, not for her Aai or Baba. She realized that to be successful she had to become less emotional, less sensitive and more practical. She had watched Raghav with his clients as well as with his detractors and learnt a lot from him. She was going to win at all costs, no longer was anyone going to walk all over her and take her for granted.
The CEO of NM Constructions was Mr.Naresh Malhotra , who was the scion of one of the biggest industrial houses in India. He had many interests, but Construction was always his first love as it was where he had started. The first day she had met him, it was in a meeting and she had been struck by the aura he had exuded. He was about 60 years of age, but his energy was of a much younger man. During the meeting she had put across certain points across with confidence and he had taken notice. After the meeting he had taken time to talk to her and appreciate her and she had been overwhelmed. After that he had asked her boss to put her on a new project which was really complicated but very interesting. She really loved working on that project and felt fulfilled and happy only when she was working.
She did not realize, but she had stopped smiling and laughing. She worked late into the night and rarely spoke to her parents at home. Her Dada had moved to Pune where he had been put in charge of a new mobile shop. Her parents seemed to be happy to see her working hard, but never seemed to ask her about her feelings.
Raghav had tried calling her many times, but never picked up his phone call. Ultimately she just changed her number, her last link to her old life. Only her parents and her new colleagues knew her new number.
She had made no friends in her office. She talked to them regarding work-related stuff, but none of them knew her personally or intimately. They all saw her working hard and thought she was a workaholic with no life, which was true.
Suddenly she was broken out of her reverie; her boss had come to her desk and informed her that she had been called to the CEO's cabin. She was nervous as hell and she felt her hands shaking as she knocked on his cabin. She walked in and saw a huge welcoming sign on Naresh sir's face. He said "Sit Kalpana". She sat down at the edge of her seat. "I am really impressed by the project report you did. You made so many relevant points which would have escaped many senior people". Kalpana just stammered "Thank you, sir". He gave her a letter. Kalpi's happiness knew no bounds, when she saw she had been promoted to a manager.
Kalpi went to the temple and thanked God for her promotion. A wave of sadness engulfed her suddenly when she remembered the last time she was in this temple with Raghav. She thought about him and suddenly tears started falling from her eyes. The Panditji saw this and came to her. "Beti, why are you crying when you are in God's presence? Please believe that whatever has happened is the best thing that could happen to you in the long run. God does not just think of today, he thinks of what is best for you for your future. Just continue with your trust on him". Kalpi nodded mutely and left from there.
In the chawl, when she informed her parents about the promotion, her mom started, "Thank you, Deva, I knew you would be very successful. Remember I told you, you were not born to be someone's wife and do housework, you were going to be a Memsaab". Kalpi's happiness vanished again and she realized that her mom still thought of her only in relation to what she could achieve. But, her own dream was still intertwined with Raghav and she still wanted to be his wife. Kamla and Vitthal wanted to throw a success party for her, but she was in no mood for it and she just went off to sleep.
In the past few months she had grown very close to Mr.Naresh Malhotra, who had become a sort of mentor to her. Her boss Mr.Nair had told her that Mr.Malhotra always looked out for bright people whom he could mentor and she should be proud he had selected her. She was like a sponge absorbing all the wisdom he could impart.
Mr.Malhotra was greatly impressed by this brilliant girl, with pain in her eyes. She had told him about her mom who was a maid and dad who was a mill-worker and how they had worked hard to get her the best education. But he always felt that there was a lot she was hiding and he did not want to pry. She sometimes felt so young and innocent and sometimes felt wise beyond her years. He saw in her a potential to go to great heights in her life. He added more and more responsibilities and she took it on without flinching. The only time she looked really happy was when she had completed some work successfully.
Kalpi had been given free access to Mr.Malhotra and she could walk in into this office at any time for advice and guidance. With Vitthal getting estranged from her , she saw Mr.Malhotra as a father figure.
Kalpi walked into the floor where Mr.Malhotra's cabin was located. His secretary Divya was not at her desk. But Kalpi wanted to show him some report urgently and get his advice, so she decided to go in anyway. The door was slightly open and when she knocked the door, the door burst fully open. Kalpi got the shock of her young life. She could just 2 see two bodies a guy and girl intertwined as if they were one. They seemed to be kissing, but she could not be really sure. An squeak escaped from her throat and both of them leaped up. She quietly closed the door, but her she was shaking all over. It seemed that her legs were made of lead. The only passion she had ever experienced was with Raghav, she had always felt Raghav's passion, but he had always kept control knowing her inexperience. The kiss that they had shared on the terrace seemed like kiddies play compared to what she had just seen.
The door was suddenly pushed open noisily and Kalpi was startled. "How dare you. How dare you walk into my room without knocking", the guy shouted at her. Kalpi turned back and was faced with a guy who looked furious as hell. She could not meet his eyes, as she was really embarrassed. "Don't you have any manners or etiquette, you fool", he shouted again. Suddenly Kalpi forgot her embarrassment and got infuriated herself." What manners and etiquette are you talking about. The door was open and when I tried knocking, the door flew open completely. It was not my fault. But you should be the one talking, when you don't have the brains to close the door when you don't want people to walk in". Her eyes were shooting draggers at him. "I am not the one embarrassed and I have nothing to hide. I don't care what you saw or what you think about it. Why should I care what a nobody working in my office, thinks about me", he said. Both Kalpi and the guy were staring at each other with so much animosity that the anger seemed linger in the atmosphere. Their trance was suddenly broken by Divya, who suddenly walked in there. "Hello Kalpana, I see you have met Vihaan Sir. He is Naresh's sir son. Sir, this is Kalpana and she is a Manager in our Marketing department". Divya was shocked to notice that neither of them acknowledged the other or even smiled and suddenly she could also feel their mutual animosity. "If she is just a manager in the Marketing department, why is she walking on the Management floor and into my father's cabin as if she owns it", Vihaan growled. "I did not act as if own this floor, I just wanted to show Sir, something important and ask his advice, never mind, I will do that later", saying that Kalpi walked off leaving a flabbergasted Vihaan standing there.
Character sketch: Vihaan Malhotra- Handsome, brilliant, only son and heir of Mr.Naresh Malhotra. Educated abroad, spoiled, but an excellent businessman. He had been considered one of the most eligible Indian bachelors in the world. He had been taking care of the his father's North American business, since the past 5 years with enormous success. He was somewhat of ladies man, having dated some of the most beautiful women in the world. But he had never fallen in love nor had any intentions of doing so. All his relationships had been transient and he was happy with that.
Kalpi was still seething in anger when she reached her cabin. She could not bear the arrogance of the guy. The way he was standing there with lipstick marks all over his face, his shirt half out from his pants and his body language aggressive like a tiger on the prowl, really made her blood boil. She suddenly remembered one of the girls in the office had shown her a magazine with his picture on it and the girl was drooling over his good looks. She had acknowledged he was handsome, but what impressed her at that time was the write-up about his work. Now she just hated him, as she had never hated anyone. She could not believe that he was Malhotra sir's son.
Vihaan was livid, could not believe the audacity of the chit of the girl. The way she walked off looking at him with disgust, as if we have was nothing more than an insect. He was so used to girls adoring him and panting after him, that this was all new to him. She did not seem to even notice his looks. He had always taken his good looks for granted along with the attention it brought him. This girl with eyes as big as saucers did not even deem to notice him. He still remembered her clearly. The girl barely looked out of her teens, dressed in a simple salwar-kurta, but being a guy he did notice she had curves in all the right places. But more than anything he remembered her dark eyes blazing with fury, they looked so enormous in her small dusky face. Thinking of her made his temper rise further and he decided to get back at her.
