What Happened To Tara?
After reaching home Tara was sitting quietly in a corner. She was quiet from the outside but inside her soul was restless.
"How could he?" She was asking again and again in her mind.
"He can."
"Why do you think he can't?" asked her mirror image.
"Because..." She wanted to answer that question but she did not have an answer for it.
"Tara ...Tara..." Aradhana patted her head.
"Girl, are you all right?" Aradhana was confused seeing her so quiet. It was not Tara's nature. She then thought it might be just about that scarf. "Don't be sad for that scarf." Saying this Aradhana hugged her.
Tara hugged her back. Aradhana's hug had the magic that used to give her joy but today that also did not give peace to her restless soul.
After returning home, Mrityunjay was cursing himself for talking so rudely to Tara.
Next day Tara got up and after Aradhana left for the palace, she enthusiastically got ready to go to the forest. But then while looking at herself in the mirror for a last minute touchup, she remembered how rudely he had talked to her and sat down in a corner of the room. She sadly remembered the time spent with him, and sobbed her heart out. Tara was quiet today. Her face clearly showed her heart's sorrow.
In the evening, after Aradhana returned from the palace, she was telling about all that happened today at the palace but Tara was quietly doing her work and not paying any attention to it.
"Tara are you all right?" asked Aradhana seeing her busy with her work.
This was not her Tara. Tara used to leave every work just to listen to what had happened at the palace and today she was not even answering Aradhana's question.
On the other side, Mrityunjay went on his regular hunt of the vampire and returned home very late that night. Tara's scarf wrapped around his palm was a reminder to him of his failure to capture the vampire. He was ruthlessly axing logs kept in the barn to release his anger, to forget how he behaved with Tara, and his failure to capture the vampire. He continued to chop until he was exhausted.
Guruji watched him from a distance but didn't say a word and went to his room. Mrityunjay went on his machan and remembering Tara's sad face in his mind before he left her outside the woods, he slept.
One by one days passed and Tara became silent. She stopped visiting places. She was not a girl to sit at home but Mrityunjay's words were stopping her from going anywhere.
"Why? Why?"
"Why are his words so important to me?"
"Why does he come in my dreams when he doesn't matter to me?"
"Like I miss him, does he also miss me?"
Everyday these questions sent Tara's mind in turmoil.
Mrityunjay started to come home late from his quests to keep himself away from any of Tara's memories. Her smile, her talks, her laughter that had made his barn beautiful reminded him about her. Every day he rode Maria through the woods to get a clue of the vampire but each day his quest went in vain. It was the first time that it was taking so long for him to track a monster. The guilt in him for manhandling Tara was not allowing him to concentrate and make a proper search plan.
Seeing him in this condition for the past one week, Guruji went to him.
"Mrityunjay, I have noticed that since one week you seem to be disturbed. Tell me Mrityunjay, I am your friend. What's the matter?"
Mrityunjay, who was chopping wood again, stopped. He was fully covered in sweat and was panting heavily.
After waiting for a while, Guruji said "Mrityujay tell me when you feel like it. You can tell me anything. I am always there for you." Saying this, he moved back into his room. Guruji knew Mrityunjay needed some time to open up to him.
After Guruji went, Mriyunjay dropped his axe and sat on the ground.
"What do I tell you Guruji? When I myself don't know what has happened to me? Why her thought is not leaving my mind? Why do I feel guilty for my act of banishing her from the forest?"
He went to his room and opened his closet. Tara's earring was there. Her ear ring was smiling at him like her. He saw her glimpse in it. Then closed his closet and banged his hands on the door in regret.
Seeing Tara quiet for the last one week, Aradhana was getting worried. She was at the palace brushing the Queen's hair but her mind was back at her home.
"What has happened to my girl?" She muttered. Seeing Aradhana lost in her thoughts, the Queen said, "Is everything fine Aradhana?"
Aradhana came back to reality hearing the Queen's question. "Aradhana, I am asking you. Is everything fine? If you need anything, tell me I will give you"
"Oh! My kind Queen I don't want anything. You and the King have already given me and Tara too much, more than what we deserved. I am worried for Tara."
"What happened to my child?" The Queen asked, taking Aradhana's hand in hers anxiously.
"Since one week my queen, she has become silent. She is neither talking, nor going anywhere and it seems like she has lost something. She remains lost in her thoughts. Her liveliness is gone. And it's making me worried."
"Aradhana! How's it possible for Tara to be silent? She is the hope to live and the very sound of life itself. How is it possible?" The Queen stood up from the stool and went near the balcony from where the bloodline trees can be seen. She remembered how Tara was the one who cheered up Meethi and revealed to the Queen that the man in the woods is her son.
Taking a short deep breath, she said, "Aradhana tell Tara I want to meet her tomorrow."
After reaching home, Aradhana caressed Tara who was sitting near the window. Tara gave her a small fake smile. Her smile didn't have the charm which used to make Aradhana forget all her fatigue.
"Tara, tomorrow you are coming with me to the palace."
"Why mom? I don't want to go anywhere." said Tara, moving her face away from her mom.
"Tara, the Queen wants to meet you. And you should obey her orders. You are neglecting my order to go out but you have to obey the Queen's order. I don't want any arguments on this." Saying this, Aradhana went to her room.
