Sony spruces up late night slot with two new shows
January 31, 07
exchange4media Mumbai Bureau

Sony Entertainment Channel has launched a one-hour band, 'Dus Se Gyara… Waqt Hai Hamara', which will house two new shows in the 10-11 pm slot – 'Durgesh Nandinii' and 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye'. Both shows would premiere on February 5, 2007 and will air from Monday to Thursday.

'Durgesh Nandinii' replaces the recently concluded 'Bigg Boss', while 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye' comes in at 10.30 pm, which otherwise aired repeats of other Sony shows. The channel will also revive popular detective series of the eighties, 'Karamchand', in February, which will see Pankaj Kapur return as the carrot munching detective. Sony has used these tactics before with 'Aahat' and 'Boogie Woogie' with varying degrees of success.

Announcing the new shows, SET's Chief Creative Director, Sandiip Sikcand, said, "Indian audiences will watch shows that they relate to and can emotionally connect with. 'Durgesh Nandinii' has a subtle tone of humour while 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye' is more intense. But both are essentially stories of women with grit and determination, and I think they are perfect to replace the slot that 'Bigg Boss' has created."

Meanwhile, more action can be expected in Sony primetime in days to come, even in the cream 9 pm band. SET COO, N P Singh, explained, "Around March-April 2006, we decided to take stock of our programming and come up with a healthy mix of fiction and non-fiction programming. Reality series like 'Fear Factor' and 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa' were results of that. While a third season of 'Indian Idols' is already on the cards, we also wanted to get back to daily soaps."

He further said that SET was in the process of finding out what was gelling with the Indian audience, and that even though numbers hadn't been huge yet, 'Bigg Boss' did make noise in the right kind of audience and that with these new initiatives, the channel was looking at regaining its place on television. The new shows are being supported with multimedia campaigns.

Desperate Sony banks on its Creative Director!

Friday, February 02, 2007
Subscribe to Newsletter

Having worked under Ekta Kapoor and knowing some of her tricks to shoot the TRP, Sandiip Sikcand, now the creative head of Sony, has a lot more interesting things to offer his channel.

Of late, it was the 'Bigg Boss' house on which Sony had banked upon. And now the channel has high hopes from the Shrivaastav and Dhanrajgir families. These two are the families in the forthcoming two new shows on the channel - 'Durgesh Nandinii ' and 'Jeete Hai Jiske Liye'.

These two shows, Sandiip hopes, "Will help the channel to jump up to the second place from the current third and eventually to the first position vis--vis TRP rankings." When questioned whether 'Durgesh Nandinii' is all about the rural-urban divide, he sternly denies. According to Sandiip, the serial is a 'terribly funny' one.

Coming from a genius like him, who was behind 'Shukra Hai Shukravaar Hai' featuring shows like the 'Fear Factor', 'Kandy Floss' and 'Deal Ya No Deal ' which garnered a lot of TRPs for the channel, it should not be hard to believe that these shows too have the power do the same. But weren't the previous ones all reality shows?

"Just like you can't have only sweet dishes all the time and you need to return to your regular dal-chawal, after the reality shows you'll return to your regular family drama," justifies Sandiip. But the time slot for these new shows is the same held by the now famous reality show 'Bigg Boss'. Why not 9-10 pm where there can be good competition from other channels? "This is the time when we can attract more audience compared to the number during the 9-10 pm slot. Moreover, we are trying to get back into providing more of what we always did, instead of attacking our rival channels."

What is commendable in both these serials is that they both are adaptations. 'Durgesh Nandinii' is from a famous novel, while 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye' is adapted from a widely popular show. Sandiip truly wants to bank upon popular ideas and not take any risks in helping his channel get back its earlier position.

"Both these serials portray women in a different way and reflect the spirit of womanhood." That's why the tagline, 'Dus Se Gyarah', 'Waqt Hamara'. Thus, these shows can be said to focus specifically on the woman viewers." Knowing how well Sandiip understands his female audiences accounting to good TRPs for his ex-production houses' shows, there are lots expectations from Sony's two new offerings. Remember with Sandiip along you, 'Waqt Tumhara Hai'!

Durgesh Nandini' to replace 'Bigg Boss'
Tuesday, December 12, 2006 23:59 IST

Sony will replace their big ticket reality show 'Bigg Boss' with a soap inspired by a classic piece of Bengali literature, Durgesh Nandini. The show, to be produced by Shobhana Desai, will launch either on January 29 or February 20, 2007.

Sony has been toying with the idea of a soap inspired by Durgesh Nandini for over a year now. Now that the channel needs to consolidate its position after gaining eyeballs with 'Bigg Boss', it seems an ideal time to introduce a period classic.

The story is about a village girl, who is named heir to a large estate, when her businessman father passes away. She has to shift to the city not just to manage the fortune but also to deal with a family who are alien as well as hostile to her, as she has turned up out of the blue and is the custodian to the entire business empire.

The cast is yet to be finalised, but indications are that Tassnim Sheikh, Anupam Bhattacharya and Shubhaavi will find their way into the serial. The hunt is still on for the lead actor. With 'Durgesh..', producer Shobhana Desai will now have two consecutive shows on Sony's primetime - 'Thodi Khushi Thode Gham' at 9.30 pm, and the new show will air at 10 pm. Sony prefers to keep mum on this development.

Bhairavi walks into Durgesh Nandini!

Happy days are back again for Bhairavi Raichuda who began her career with Hum Paanch a decade ago. The actor has been roped in for Sony's Durgesh Nandini to play a negative character. And there's more in her kitty as the versatile actor is also playing a

Bhairavi in different avatars!

romantic main lead in Zee Gujrathi's Saptapadi along with Sab's Yes Boss.

So, what does her first time ever negative character look like in Durgesh Nandini?
"I play Priya who is the daughter of the house and is pampered to the hilt. She's a rich, dominating housewife who stays in her parent's house while her henpecked husband also stays with them. I am the most wcked daughter who keeps plotting and scheming forever," says Bhairavi who will have a designer salwar kameez look in the show.

So what made her take up so many shows randomly?
"I am excited about my role in Durgesh Nandini as I get to play an out and out negative character for the first time. In Saptapadi, I play the main protagonist who's all out to fight for her love with her family. I get to share screen space with veterans like Sudha Chandra and Anang Desai and I must add it's a good experience," smiles the actor who will now be shooting all thirty days of the month.
Interestingly, the actor has replaced Resham Seth, who shot for one day and decided to walk out so the production house eventually pencilled in on Bhairavi, who has started shooting only two days back.
Just back from a well deserved break (post Paraya Dhan) from Bangkok, now Bhairavi is back to some

I think I am very lucky to have bagged this kind of a role."

So, what took him so long to sign on the dotted line? "It took me sometime to commit to Durgesh, as I was busy with other projects. And then the Bigg Boss happened and I was totally cut off from the real world. But, now I have no qualms about taking up new projects, and I hope this is good for me."

Woh saat din

Resham Seth ousted from Durgesh Nandini in 7 days

Ranjib Muzamder

Resham Seth & Bhairavi Raichura

Call it the dictatorship of the production houses or the haphazard scheduling habits, actors are forced to work as per the production house's demands. The recent victim is Resham Seth who has been ousted from Durgesh Nandini within seven days of shooting. She has been replaced by Bhairavi Raichura.

A source reveals, "Resham took on Durgesh Nandini as it was an out-and-out negative character. But the shooting schedules were completely unplanned. She could not manage her dates as she is already committed to Ghar Ek Sapna. The producers wanted her to give more importance to Sony as it is a bigger channel."

Resham confirmed the news. "Yes, I have left Durgesh Nandini as the shoots were unplanned. Sometimes, they continuously shoot at nights at a stretch and sometimes the shoots were cancelled without prior notice."

Was there any bad blood? She shrugs, "I could not match up to their demands. I am happy with Ghar Ek Sapna." Bhairavi sounds very excited: "I play Priya, a rich, dominating housewife who stays in her parents' house with her henpecked husband. I look forward to wearing a lot of designer salwar kameezes for the show," she says.

Sanjala, the production house's spokesperson refused to comment.

Of Grit and Determination

Sony Entertainment Television has started beaming its new shows Durgesh Nandini and Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, that depict women of determination. A talk with Rinku Ghosh and Ashwini Kalsekar who essay important roles in the two serials...

RINKU GHOSH
What character do you play in Durgesh Nandini?
I play Durgesh Nandini- a girl who believes in certain values in life like honesty, simplicity and kindness. But she is also very contemporary in terms of her street-smart attitude. She can be brutally aggressive and yet have a soft corner for somebody who needs her help. I play an out-and-out rustic girl, with a tomboyish twist to her. In fact she closely resembles my real persona. Does being a part of a rural backdrop suit you?
I accept that most of the TV shows these days have an urban appeal, but at the same time the fact is that most of our population still reside in villages. A show like Durgesh Nandini will cater to a larger population in that sense and I am confident that with the kind of theme this show has, it will definitely go well with the audiences. After working in films, how has the television experience been?
I won't say that I am totally new to television. In the sense, I've done TV commercials for brands like Kelvinator, Rexona and Sweekar Oil. Though I agree that my forte has been films - regional cinema to be precise. I have done films like Iyyer IPS (Tamil), Dravina Chaliya (Telugu), Joy Maa Durga (Bengali), Suhaagni Banade Sajana Hamaar (Bhojpuri) and two Hindi films, Koi Hai and Wrong Number. Durgesh Nandini has close shades to some characters that I have enacted in regional films. Moreover, both films and television have similar kind of demands from an artiste. On the whole it has been a comfortable experience so far. How excited are you about the show?
I am very much thrilled about the show. I have a habit of taking up one thing at a time and concentrating on it fully. Right now my focus is on Durgesh Nandini. I feel lucky having got this kind of a role.
ASHWINI KALSEKAR
You have been playing negative characters for some time now. Are you again playing a negative character in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye?
Yes, I am used to playing a negative character since I did Jigyaasa. As far as JHJL is concerned, to the viewer, this role will look a negative character, but actually it is positive as far as my character of Adira is concerned. Please elaborate.
Adira is the buwa of Dhanrajgir (Ayub Khan) who is a businessman. Somewhere in-between Dhanrajgir dies. It is then that Adira takes over the business which she expands, so much so that she builds a mansion for the family. Later, once Adira is told by her family members that she was only the caretaker, she gets enraged. From here on she looks out for methods to destabilise the family. Any one in Adira's place would have done just that, because it is a matter of one's security. Your character has an enchanting look.
Adira is very stylised on the lines of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, but I haven't followed them. Right from my rings to the earrings, everything has been so designed to rev up my character. And what about your character?
Every grey character is always given a powerful look and has to mainly emote through the eyes. The same goes with Adira. The entry of Adira is always accompanied by an ominous background score a la Gabbar Singh in Sholay. Then there are moments when Adira screams "That's all" after which no one dares to talk. Tell us about the films you have acted in.
Besides doing serials like Shanti, CID, K3 Pali Hill, Ek Aur Mohabbat, in which I played Draupadi, and Naya Zamana, I have done films like Khakee, Musafir, Apaharan and Ankahee.I am currently doing Johny Gaddar and two films for Vikram Bhatt.

Mumbai Mirror looking'07 ahead

Small screen, big EXPECTATIONS

Couch potatoes can get set to aim their remote control at…

Kaun Banega Crorepati

Will the 'King Khan' brand emerge victorious once again because of KBC? If the current on-air promos are anything to go by, the show might just be bigger and better than the previous version. Against all apprehensions, that the new version's ratings will not match those of the previous versions hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, the sponsors are keeping their fingers crossed for the biggest telly event of 2007. With the biggest stars of Bollywood- Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan being at loggerheads, this is just the opportunity for SRK to prove that he can step into Big B's shoes, as he proved in the remake of Don.

The Biggest Loser

After Amitabh Bachchan and SRK, it's the time for macho man, Suniel Shetty to make his television debut. The Biggest Loser is an adaptation of the popular American reality show of the same name. Suniel Shetty will be anchoring the show which will deal with health, fitness and motivation. The actor is the obvious choice, thanks to his bulging biceps and wittiness quotient. The contestants in the show will be overweight people who lose flab under the guidance of a celebrity trainer to get a healthy body and hefty prize money.

Kis Rishtey Se…

After all the overdose of 'K' factor with Kahaani.., Kyunki…, Kasamh Se and others, here comes another K…. The show is Kis Rishtey Se. Rumoured to be based on a popular novel; the script will be penned by Bollywood biggies. The new soap has Shabbir Ahluwalia and Karan Wahi as male leads and Ronit Roy in a cameo. The story revolves around two stepsisters and the turmoil in their life. The female lead is yet to be finalised. The show will be targetted at urban audiences.

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa

This is one of the few music shows that has been running successfully for almost a decade. The show has strived to be a platform for budding talents through its platforms Challenge 2005 and Ek Main Aur Ek Tu. This year, music lovers will see the same show with almost the same flavour but without its director Gajendra Singh.

Jeete Hain Jiske Liye

This is one show that everyone is looking forward to. After Kora Kaagaz, Surabhi girl Renuka Shahane is making a comeback in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye. The serial has been much talked about as it is the comeback vehicle of Renuka after a decade. The show has also been in the news for the legal notice sent to Balaji alleging that the generation leap in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki is similar to the concept. The show is an adaptation of an international telenovella La Madratssa.

Viruddh

After Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasman, here comes another soppy saga from producer Smriti Irani. Writer Kamalesh Pandey of Rang De Basanti fame is writing the script and the shooting is going to start from early February. The cast is an amalgamation of the choicest and the best talents. The new serial has big telly stars like Sushant Singh making his comeback on TV, Ashwini Kalsekar, Vikram Gokhale, Achint Kaur, Govind Namdev and Smriti irani herself.

Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhhla Ja

Rocking the nation big time with their dance moves and the respective winners, both Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa are expected to come up with another season of popcorn entertainment. Both Sony and Star One are keen on airing the next season of the shows. If the insiders are to be believed, things are going to be bigger and better next time with big celebrities dancing to popular tunes.

Durgesh Nandini

Sony is toying with the idea of a daily soap named Durgesh Nandini, an adaptation of the celebrated Bengali novel by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee by the same name. It's a period drama which revolves around a village girl, who is named heir to a large estate, when her father (who is a businessman) passes away. She has to shift to the city to not only manage the fortunes but also deal with a family who is alien to her. The family is also hostile to her as she is the custodian to the entire business empire and has turned up in their lives out of the blue. Although the cast is yet to be finalised, it is rumoured that Tassnim Sheikh, Anupam Bhattacharya and Shubhaavi will find their way into the serial. The hunt is still on for the lead actor. The show will be produced by Shobhna Desai and it will be aired on the prime time band.

Extreme MakeOver

After playing the ugly duckling in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, followed by her winning score in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, Mona Singh is going to host the reality show Extreme Makeover. It is a formatted show, where people born with defects or who had accidents will be undergoing surgery in the show. As the actress underwent a makeover as Jassi, she is the apt choice for anchoring the show. Mona has been saying that the show will target people who are not able to lead normal lives because of the defects and who cannot afford the surgery. There will be a panel of doctors and dentists and the crew would go to the houses of participants let audiences know the 'before and after' stories and effects.
