Going by the promos, Durgesh Nandini looks like a typical village belle — naughty but innocent. However, such girls, when pushed to the wall, overcome their village innocence and don a completely different avatar that sends their enemies scurrying for cover. Durgesh Nandini is one such girl whose journey starts in a village and moves to a big city where she owns a huge real estate property.

Model-turned-actress Rinku Ghosh who plays the protagonist Durgesh Nandini in the forthcoming soap on Sony of the same name is completely in love with the character she plays in her debut show.

Rinku always wanted to be an actress. In fact, such was her fascination for glamour and showbiz that while she was studying for her graduation she made the rounds of advertising agencies for a break in modeling. And when she got the break for Kelvinator commercial she sidelined her studies. "But I managed to complete my graduation in Arts," adds the TV debutant who has done quite a few prestigious commercials for consumer goods like Parachute, Medimix, Sweekar, Rexona and so on. Getting a break in serials wasn't difficult. With the help of a model coordinator, who is also a casting agent for serials, she sent her photographs to Shobna Desai Productions. She was called for an audition and soon after given the title role.

My Character & !
By: Shaheen Parkar
March 6, 2007

There are many girls who would have loved to be Durgesh Nandinii.

That's obvious. Durgesh Nandinii is this village belle who overnight finds herself as the heiress of some cool millions! Her journey from Lalgunj to the big city is a dream anyone would want to come true.

How does this village belle inherit a fortune?

It is all by chance. She bumps into this millionaire Dharamdas Srivastava and cares for him as he has been injured.

He finds her caring and loving. The fact that she was so helpful to a stranger leaves him touched. Later, he finds out that she is the daughter of his old associate, someone he had lost touch with for years.

As he gets to know Durgesh Nandinii, he is convinced that she is the only one to whom he can bequeath his millions. His own family, he feels, are useless and a rude bunch who do not deserve anything.

Now you are firmly entrenched in the Srivastava household?

Yes, after Dharamdas Srivastava's death, as per his will, I am his sole inheritor. Soon, I will make my presence felt in his office as well.

Though I am a rustic girl, I am not nave, I can manage myself as well as pesky members of his family with equal ease. I am more of a tomboy who calls a spade a spade.

These pesky members of the family detest you?

Yes, especially Aseem (Anupam Bhattacharya), the eldest son of Dharamdas Srivastava, who is the main person in fanning hatred for me.

The only ones who are on my side is Kshitij (Amit Sadh) the adopted son and the kids in the Srivastava house.

How believable is your character of Durgesh Nandinii?

You will not find Durgesh Nandiniis in the real world. But then miracles do happen and maybe there are people who just give away everything to someone

'I'm a pehelwan, not physically but mentally'

... reacts Rinku Ghosh, who has received a lot of flak for her look as Durgesh Nandini

SHARIN WADER

Acolumnist once referred to her as a pehelwan, but Rinku Ghosh who plays Durgesh Nandini on Sony TV is undeterred. "Yes, as Durgesh Nandini, I'm a pehelwan, not physically but mentally," she says justifying her look in the serial. "I play a village girl and in a village, there are no glam dolls, but girls like Durgesh Nandini," she says and adds, "Besides my role doesn't require me to be a fragile girl. I'm supposed to fight back and be bold. So I feel for the role, my look is just fine."
So did she gain weight to portray that role? "No, I haven't particularly gained weight for this serial. I have been like this because I was doing a lot of regional films where you don't need to have a skinny figure," she says.
In fact, Rinku says that it's because of the kind of roles that she did in regional films that she bagged this serial. "They saw one of my Bhojpuri films and approached me for Durgesh Nandini. They were convinced that I could do justice to the role. It was definitely my look and my accent that worked in my favour."
But won't her weight ever be a problem if she decides to do other serials? "It's too early to say whether I will be doing more serials. But I do believe that one needs to work on the character more than just the look," she says and adds, "Besides, I wouldn't like to play just a goody-goody, sweet looking girl all the time."
So does that mean that she has quit regional cinema for good? "Since Durgesh Nandini has just gone on air now, I will be working back-to-back for the serial. Later on, I will be shuffling between films and TV," says the actor who is presently enjoying her time on the small screen.

Sandiip denies he is in a soup

Rumour has it that Sony's senior creative head Sandiip Sikcand hasn't lived up to the channel's expectations so his bosses have put him on a two-month notice period. Sony allegedly has given an ultimatum to Sandiip — show results in two months or face the pink slip. When asked if there was any truth to these rumours, Sandiip says, "I have also heard these rumours. I don't know who is circulating them.

I don't want to waste my time and energy thinking and speculating about who is floating these false stories. I am doing well in my job and enjoying it too." He also doesn't think the shows launched under his tenure are doing badly. "Kulvaddhu is doing fine. Durgesh Nandini and Jeete Hai Jiske Liye are hardly one month old and both are performing well. The response for Durgesh has been extremely positive in Gujarat and Rajasthan and its appeal will spill over to other Hindi speaking areas in coming weeks."

When Rinku cried on sets...

The actor shed tears as she was not granted a much-needed break

GITA HARI

Many people on the sets of Durgesh Nandini
on Sony were alarmed when the protagonist Rinku Ghosh started crying on the sets recently. She plays the bold and courageous girl in the serial on whom rests the onus of rectifying the reprobate sons of the deceased patriarch. And to see her break down appeared to be an antithesis to her character.
According to a source, a couple of days back, the actor had asked for a break and the production house had promised to look into it. It is believed that in the hope of having her leave granted, she went ahead and made some plans to chill out that had to be cancelled, after her leave could not be sanctioned. Since she desperately needed a couple of days off, she broke down and wept.
As Durgesh Nandini is her first daily soap, did the long hours of shoots lead to her breakdown?
"Not at all," replies Rinku. "I have been working at a hectic pace and I thought I should unwind. It was only disappointment I experienced when my break could not come through," she says. She adds, "I am aware of the irregular timings of daily serials. Also, I am conscious of the kind of commitment required."
