I wish I'd seen this topic earlier. But, I think OSO will take all the awards this year compared to Saawariya.

Seen OSO, paisa vasool. Yet to watch Sawariya.

Coming to female actresses, have'nt seen Sonam's debut. But definitely Deepika is ravishing, smart and confident. She has everything to make it among the top actresses, may be she will polish and improve more her acting abilities with time.

Two actresses at present definitely stand out are Vidya Balan(she was not just good in Parieeta, she proved it again in Bhool Bhulaiya)and Konkona(have headly seen such a natural actress in Bollywood in recent times).

You still don't seem to get it...All I'm saying is,Rani,Kareena,Urmila etc have been in the industry for YEARS...Rani has been around for eleven years,Kareena has been acting for 8 years now,Urmila has been there for 13 years...Vidya is in her third year of acting, give her another 5 years before comparing her to Kareena or Rani...Do not forget,Neither Rani nor Preity nor Kareena did their best films in their initial 2-3 years

Rani was very good in her first film. It is another matter that only very few like me actually watched that film😃. Preity was wonderful in Dil Se with whatever little role she had and also in Kya Kehna which was a mature topic for such a young actor. Kareena got praises for her serious acting in her very fist film, 'Refugee'. The film bombed but she was touted as the next best thing after her first film itself.

Whether we agree or not, apparently, KJo/Yashraj films are the yardstick used to judge actors these......mostly female actors. For Kareena I think only when she took off her makeup or went for makeup-less look in Dev and Omkara was she again praised just like she had gotten for Refugee. Rarely are female actors with make-up doing glossy films taken seriously.😛

I did - it was called Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat 😃. And I also agree about Preity in Kya Kehna - she was wonderful for a newcomer and a youngster.

I agree. 👍🏼

Good-looking people become stars and girls who like next door girls are termed good actors because apparently, a glamorous girl can never act well.

Agree with you Maya ... Somehow it seems that one's career starts with a blockbuster director and nothing done before that counts, even the actors themselves downplay their earlier work.. 😕 . But then the actors themselves say that it is "the" director that brings the best out of them and wish to work with the top directors.

Oh I sooooo wanna see OSO now after hearing so many +ve reviews.😳

I myself found the narration of "White Nights" very tedious and I couldn't connect to the protagonist at all.

Even the best writers have their duds.

In either case, there are plenty of other Russian writers like Anton Chekhov who do an amazing job portraying the realities of Russia's middle-class; none of their work is so abstract.

I recently read Nikolai Gogol's "The Overcoat" and while theplot is simplistic, the narrative is so engaging and humourousthat you crave to read more of it.

i found the character of the guy very complicated. white nights is a well written story imo but at the same time, i couldnt digest the character of a dreamer.

If you're talking about hits,Vidya has had 4..Parineeta,Lage Raho Munnabhai,Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa...Infact three of these films were superhits....But none of them were her solo hits, just as none of Rani/Preity/Kareena's initial hits were solo hits either

The success of KKHH cannot be attributed to Rani,KKHH was an SRK-Kajol film which would have done well had ANY actress played the role of Tina....Rani was appreciated alright, but going so far as to calling it "her" hit is a bit unreasonable

Likewise, the success of OSO cannot be attributed to Deepika...OSO is an SRK film, which would have done well irrespective of the actress or the supporting cast...Deepika is glamourous, gorgeous and everything, but the success of OSO doesn't prove her supposed "star power"....And IMHO Deepika's acting ability surely isn't "terrific"...She isn't downright bad,but she ain't out of the world either.....

Vidya might not be a cheesecake, but she certainly is NOT in the same league as Antara Mali(who isn't the girl next door in any which way) or Gracy Singh whose career ended before it took off

Not necessarily...Take Kajol for instance...She is the only contemporary actress who managed NOT to come across as cheesy in aYRF/K Jo film .Kajol didn't have to shed make up to get appreciation, nor did Aishwarya...HDDCS and Devdas are considered to be Ash's best performances, and in the both the films, she was decked in finery, baroque jewellery and make up....Kareena was applauded in Jab We Met,and she didn't go for the non-glam look in the film....Female stars do not necessarily need to eschew make-up and commercial cinema to get critical acclaim....An actress can shine even in a film like Legallyblonde if she can act the part of the valley girl to perfection😃..
