Why do we always compare ourselves with US. Do we know for sure what US govt. does? India doesn't do a lot of things that US govt. does, either because it won't suit us or because India doesn't have the kind of authority that US enjoys. Do US citizens cite example of India to protest against US govt's decision when US decides to do something?

Donald Trump and the right say the same thing about liberals criticizing Americans.

The liberals are poor losers I feel. Instead of gracefully accepting the poll verdict, I find my FB wall filled with all sorts of rants. Latest being Meryl Streep vs Donald Trump. So, when Donald Trump criticised Obama and Obama took the opportunity of a dinner party to insult Trump in front of everyone, Obama is great. When Meryl Streep criticises Trump, she is great. If Trump decides to retaliate then he is classless. Such hypocrisy has become so acceptable for liberals everywhere that it is becoming too predictable. No wonder the right in US feel the same way about the liberals that we feel about liberals here in India.

There was a time I missed the "irritation", if you will, behind this line of questioning but I see the emotion behind it now.

There are "best of" lists such as best countries for women, best countries for raising kids, best countries for retirement, etc., so, depending on the context and the "feature" that we are comparing, it isn't so bad to compare. After all, even in schools we are used to comparisons with top rankers all the time.

Every business should respect the sentiments of people (within reason).

The way things appear, no one feels obliged to do that anymore , unless in some way it is going to adversely affect them. Its business as usual for most. India expressed its objection and Amazon responded by apologising and agreeing to withdraw the Indian national flag on their doormats. It doesn't make business sense to lose Indian customers over the issue.

You are operating under the assumption that Amazon does not respect Indian sentiments and intended to disrespect them.

I don't think that it was assumed that Amazon had deliberately intended to show disrespect to Indians but they found something objectionable and expressed it to get that item withdrawn from the website.

A few factors to keep in mind

- Culture varies and businesses try to operate under the culture of their market

- There is no one size fits all model of doing business. With over a 195 countries and multitudes of cultures within each country, it is impossible to please all.

- Amazon is also a marketplace for other sellers. While Amazon has control over its sellers it is not possible to manage them 24/7

Indians should have understood that flag paraphernalia is popular in North America, including ones based on US flags and let Amazon cater to its local markets. Even if they took offense they should have handled it in a mature manner. I can understand civilians getting riled up. However, Sushma Swaraj should know better than to make threats about visas et all on twitter and handle the matter diplomatically. A lot of harm was done. Indian diplomacy is now an international joke.

Indians do understand and did not object to US using their own flag motifs for any item they like . It may be commonplace in US to use their own national flag based themes for a doormat, underwear or toilet paper. They are welcome to it. The objection was against the use of the Indian national flag motif for doormats as that is considered disrespectful in India. Why should anyone get riled about that? The US has lots of other motifs to choose from..

Or perhaps Sushma Swaraj is in training to conduct all her business in the same manner as our President elect.

Sushma Swaraj did what she felt best to handle the situation especially since there had also been protests in the past when Amazon had hosted doormats with motifs of Indian Gods and Goddesses on it as trampling on these is considered desecration. Whatever be the feelings or "over-reaction" to her act, she did achieve her objectives of getting an apology, withdrawal of the item from the website and support of her voters.

The message is simple. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are not absolute and come with limitations. That shouldn't be too hard to understand.

I did the comparison ..should have used Canada my bad because the product is sold in Canada and to me the jurisdiction of that land should be respected in matters like that. Unless India gets some UN approved law against the use of it's flag or symbols. When we are at it ,Amazon sells shoes with Ashoka symbol and other "National" motifs. Lets waste all sorts of Govt. revenues tracking down sites which are selling things with sacred or national symbols .

Why US, take any country you want because we here are talking about Nationalism because someone in another country is using our symbols for consumerism. If India can use it\'s diplomatic might to stop the production, sale and decree a law against the usage, I will appreciate it. Would actually love to see that. By getting over-sensitive we are displaying nothing but our inferiority complex. Tell em , do you want India to capture, end business with Nepal because of flag-burning. I would love to see an Indian Govt. try that . Power dynamics corrected.
Should India make that a business clause too while dealing with any country?

Recently an Indian filed a case against Pokemon Game saying that it was against India and Hinduism because the game showed some pokemons at temple locations. Lets take the petition and make Sushma tweet and arm-twist another corporation.

I believe if we really want such type of diplomacy aka use of sns then I would love to see Sushmaji threaten China with no entry for it's citizens , businesses etc till they declare Masoor Azad , terrorist status at UN. A diplomatic failure we haven't yet sorted. A cause as an Indian citizen still, I would love to applaud and salute if carried via sns.

You couldn't end the MFN and business visas with pakistan after Uri but we will do Nationalism tamasha on sns to divert failures.

So what is next? A notice to every country about this . Combing thousands of websites world-wide. Taking such cases to International tribune.

Also, I believe in this case Indian market shouldn't also be using National symbols, flags of any country on products and we should penalize a law against it. Coz FOE with limitations and sensitivity.

The previous govts. never protested against anything, never tweeted anything. India became the most respected and powerful country because of that I guess and Sushma Swaraj just destroyed everything.
