This discussion as it started was about double standards. We came to know the real intent of OP only after his/her second post in this thread.

You have all the rights to your opinion that this culture is wrong.. but that is not the point of discussion.

As always.. you are off topic.

A guy has his opinions about the importance of girl's virginity. Just like you have an opinion to hang him. You may not like his opinion but it is no crime. The worst thing about this whole discussion is that there is no double standard anywhere. Nowhere.

I'm not going to discuss the topic with you because we did it yesterday, but I would like you to clarify one thing - you feel unless he actually implements different treatment, it's just an opinion and not a standard yet? If that is so then no wonder you disagree with the topic starter and people who agreed with it. Our assumptions themselves were different.

Well, to be honest, I got confused. I thought the discussion was about double standards. Turns out, OP had a different intent in mind. The discussion was going to be about a guy who thinks his wife should be virgin at the time of their marriage.

To answer your question - as I told you before, I am perfectly fine with that guys opinion. Also, if he implements it i.e. marries a virgin girl.. fine. If he changes his implementation when it comes to his non-virgin unmarried sister, that guy has double standards.

Which part is wrong?
  • Expecting one's wife to be virgin? OR
  • A guy who is not virgin expecting his wife to be virgin? OR
  • Both of the above two?

So your idea of double standards has to do with different implementations given to his sister and to the girl who will possibly become his wife based on whether or not she is a vigin. I really can't argue with you on that. I think that double standards can apply to any two different groups of people.

I don't know if you like wikipedia or not, but here goes:

" The concept of double standard has long been applied (as early as 1872) to different moral strictures on men versus women."

source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_standards

and at the same time your example of the sibling of the man is not illogical either.

Ok - I would definitely classify men vs. women stuff as discrimination based on gender. But that's just me.

but this discrimination between the 2 genders is just another form of double standards, isn't it? :S You can call it discrimination or DS. anyway to each his own...

None of them...as long as it is expectations and not demands...nothing wrong with expecting things as long as you don't make someone else miserable because of ur expectations...but as soon as these expectations become demands...everything is wrong with them...chalo...a man who is virgin...demands a virgin girl in marriage...is acceptable...because if u have a certain standard...and u want ur partner to be of that standard too...its reasonable...
But its double standards...when a man who has slept with 10 women would demand a virgin girl ...in the name of culture...kyon bhai..?..

It's interesting to read about all these assumptions people have.
In reality, both the above comments are proved incorrect on a daily basis.
