Bangalore gets terror alert ahead of Commonwealth Games
Published: Friday, Sep 3, 2010, 10:06 IST
By Ameen Khan | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA

The Centre has instructed Karnataka to thoroughly screen foreigners arriving in the state, especially in Bangalore, in the wake of reports about terror threats to the 19th Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi in October.

There had been an increasing number of advisories from the ministry of home affairs (MHA) about the possibility of terror elements sneaking into Karnataka, to target the games, intelligence sources.

Intelligence officials in Bangalore received an advisory a couple of days ago specifically instructing them to check all foreigners arriving in the city, sources said.

"The terror alerts have been received by Karnataka and Kerala, besides Delhi," an intelligence officer, who did not want to be named, said. "We cannot rule out the possibility of a 26/11-like attack during the games," he said.

On November 26, 2008, 10 terrorists had stormed Mumbai and had held the city hostage for almost four days. It later transpired that an American, David Headley, and his Canadian associate Tahawwur Hussain Rana, were among the perpetrators of 26/11 attacks.

"The ministry has asked us to set up a separate cell for CWG participants," a senior police officer with the immigration department said. "We have also received the list of people who might stop over in Bangalore and we will have to check their antecedents and also ensure that they have authorised entry permits," the officer said.

Immigration officials said they had been conducting regular meetings over the past six months to discuss security for the games.

The latest MHA advisory was completely contradictory to its earlier instructions, the intelligence officer quoted earlier said. Earlier, the ministry had advised officials at international airports all over the country, including Bangalore, to welcome participants and foreign invitees to the games with "open arm".

"The earlier instructions said that they should be treated as VIPs since they would be our state guests, they should not be questioned, and that all facilities they demanded should be made available to them without any hesitation," the officer said.

But the ministry made a volte-face after several international agencies warned that there was a possibility of terrorists targeting the games. It put out a list of potential targets and advised states like Delhi, Karnataka and Kerala to deploy additional forces in certain locations.

Lashkar plans aerial attack on CWG, says report

September 02, 2010 02:47 IST
In a front-page story, the Toronto Star quoted India's [ Images ] Home Secretary GK Pillai as saying that the Lashkar-e-Tayiba [ Images ] has bought as many as 150 paragliders from in recent months with the aim of launching a terror attack on the Commonwealth Games [ Images ].

'It's very worrisome, paragliders don't require a runway. They could launch them from anywhere'" Pillai told the publication.

According to this report, Indian security forces are being advised of the threat and snipers at the Games will prepare to shoot down any unknown flying object, Pillai reportedly said.

Modern gliders can travel as many as 500 kilometers and stay in the air for up to 11 hours.

The Indian military for at least two years has contemplated the possibility of attacks from the air, the report reveals.'The addition of ultra-light mobility to global guerrilla swarming operations provides a mobility advantage that would be very difficult to defend against' says a report prepared in 2008 by the Indian Air Force.

Art of Living launching clean Delhi drive
New Delhi, Sep 5, (PTI):

The MCD today assured all possible help to the Art of Living Foundation which is launching a drive to clean Delhi from tomorrow.

"41 specific and strategic sites including the tourist spots near the Commonwealth Games venues are being covered in the cleanliness drive," the civic body said in a statement.

Volunteers of the NGO have been mobilising citizens to take part in its, 'Meri Delhi Meri Yamuna-Clean Delhi Drive', which started in July this year. A special week-long campaign will be held from tomorrow.

Mayor P R Sawhney said that MCD is also supporting Art of Living's efforts to install double dustbins (meant for biodegradable and recyclable waste) across Delhi in MCD areas, besides in mass awareness and cleanliness campaigns throughout the city.

Rashmi Paliwal, Apex Member, Art of Living, said children from at least 340 schools have taken up the project around their schools. "MCD is empowering 10 children per participating school as 'clean Delhi captains' to monitor the adopted sites and to ensure cleanliness on the sites," she said. These clean Delhi captains will be issued identity cards on behalf of MCD.

School-children will join Art of Living volunteers, market associations, RWAs, NGOs, corporates and college students at all 41 strategic points to start the cleanliness drive, she said.
* Public participation picking up 😊 but the metereological dept came up with a dampener that the rains may continue well into October .That is cause for worry ! The water logging and traffic snarls that will occur seems to be impossible to be taken care of 😳

These are surely the most well known CWG ever. Even in some of the videshi tech forums I usually visit where I hardly if ever saw any India related threads, there are CWG fiasco related threads. It has been covered by International media in detail.

Jam kar looto public money ko baap ka maal samajh kar, woh bhi shaan se khule aam bina kisi dar se aur aap par koi action bhi nahi hoga. Aap nikamme, nakaare aur ekdam bhrasht hain phir bhi aap minister bane rah sakte hain.

Mera Bharat Mahaan! Pradhan mantri ji nindra se kab bahar aayenge? Jitna effort nuclear deal ke liye lagaya tha utna Maoists, J&K, Nagaland/Manipur issue, CWG, telecom scam etc mein lagate to desh ka bhala ho jaata.

jo so rahe ho unko jagaya jaata hai Deepak.....jage hue ko nahi......pradhan mantri jaan kar bhi anjaan hain
Sirf oonchi imartein banane se kissi desh ka bhavishya nahi badalta hai......desh ka bhavishya badalta hai work culture se.....and corruption rules the work culture in India....thats why we are seeing what we are seeing..........India as a country will never be ready for these kinds of projects unless the work culture changes.....till then India should refrain from hosting such mega events and making a fool out of themselves in front of the whole world...

I think they should check what really happened and if monies were all siphoned out.
It cannot be lack of funds, but fund diversions or abuse should be investigated.
Why it it take so long to find out the problems ?

Besides greed , a lack of proper vision and planning too is responsible for all the confusion created. whatever said and done the Chief of OC of CWG cannot be held responsible for the delay in road, flyover, metro repairs. He had no control over these agencies. The Lt Governor or the CM of Delhi ought to have stepped in long back as only they could have co ordinated the various agencies that were required to carry out the huge multifarious work of this scale ! They exhibited a complete lack of initiative in this case. Were they waiting for an invitation? Was it not their duty to contribute? Mike Fennel and Mike Hooper too failed to carry out their responsibilty as CWG officials and were instead found making disparaging remarks posed by huge population hazard of Delhi !!!
